Media Continues Decline

  • The Chicago Sun-Times has laid off its entire photography staff, and plans to use freelance photographers and reporters to shoot photos and video going forward, the newspaper said.

A total of 28 full-time staffers received the news Thursday morning at a meeting held at the Sun-Times offices in Chicago, according to sources familiar with the situation. The layoffs are effective immediately.

The newspaper released a statement suggesting the move reflected the increasing importance of video in news reporting
Because video translates so well to newsprint.

The fact is that since there are so many people out there with cell phone cameras and the ability to upload almost contemporaneously as news happens, the day of the dedicated news photographer has passed before our eyes. We can see a not-to-distant future where dedicated news reporters go the same way, replaced by a dwindling number of editors who have the ability to take text messages, "tweets" or similar info and translating it into USA Today-style mini-articles and call it news. After all, we see Frank, Fran and sometimes Sneed stealing articles and comments from this very site.

No worries, I'm sure that they can all find work in one of Obama's "green" jobs programs.

It's not just print media either.

All these talk radio shows just steal stories from various sources on the net including this very site here.

I don't know about you but i find it tiresome this media that just takes a PR's from politicians and prints it without question calling it journalism.

Their days are numbered.

10 years ago, every single person I knew had a subscription to the Times, some even had both the Times and the Trib.

Today, not one person, including myself has a Scum-Times subscription and I have a Sunday only Trib subscription for the sale papers and coupons that more than pay for the subscription.

No turning back now. Too late to start printing the truth. The REAL truth, not the truth you are told to print! Enjoy those pink slips, their will be more coming, well deserved.

Speaking of twits and tweets, i wonder how the new department pilot program venturing into the world of Twitter is going. 007, 011 and 018 are the pilot program districts for CPD's foray into the world of Twitter. Volunteer officers will be the twits, I mean, tweeters.

Hi,

Another reason is Obamacare is about to hit the country like a ton of sh*t-bricks. Anyone who works 28 hours a week will be considered full time. With full time status comes an employer obligation to provide very expensive healthcare, or pay a (for now, since it escalates annually after 2014) small fine.

The American people are about to find out what is in Obamacare. The Americans I grew up with would have revolted over what's coming...the generations who inhabit this country now? They will probably accept it...and wonder why they cannot live as well as Americans did in the past. (of course, there are a host of complimentary issues that add to the coming destruction). Thank God honest citizens have conceal carry to protect themselves...

With SCC and the internet who needs the dead tree media other than bird cage owners and fishermen.

Sadly, I hate to see the end of our major daily newspapers. Yes, they have more then their share of columnists who are not worth reading, but they do give society a great service, that is investigative reporting. Who would do this when the papers go under? Who would keep an eye on our lousy corrupt political class?

..." dedicated news reporter..." that profession no longer exists, although there are a few exceptions.
The current MSM & its so called reporters are nothing but a propaganda arm of the Obama administration.
Fast & Furious, Benghazi, AP phone record seizure, IRS targeting conservative groups, and nary a whit of these scandals reported by " dedicated news reporters ".

The newspapers committed suicide! They lied and forwarded the Agendas of their favorite politicians. Unfortunately for them, people with jobs, tax-payers realized they were being lied to and they stopped reading them. I remember when BO ran for the Senate, someone did a study and it showed BO's photo was in print at a rate of about 12 to 1 of any other candidate. Nobody will miss the passing of newspapers.

Sun Times I sincerely hope you fail and go under quickly. Years of your manipulative exploitative sensationalistic biased lies that you disguise as reporting has finally come.back to bite you. The day is coming when technology and the internet will enable anyone to put out their own news or blogs and effectively run you,
Goonberg, and the Trib out of business or render you irrelevant.
While I hate to see anyone lose their jobs the thought of irreverent hacks such as Mitchell ,Main,Spielman,Gorner,Steinberg out of work is not entirely unpleasing. These individuals are part of a cancer that has done more harm than good. The thought of The Slimes shutting down or scaling back to a one floor operation like the Philadelphia Inquirer gives me hope for the future.

Whatever you do, don't take a picture at a crime scene or other event and try and sell it under your own or a relative's name. I know a copper who sold video to a tv station and got in serious trouble.

Just cancelled the Trib subscription, used to have scum-times for sports page but then even they went way
lefty. Now I read Drudge, SCC, and the WSJ. I'm enjoying watching the lame stream media die off a slow death. You can only get to thenpoint where you are so marginalized by the media. I mean they promote everything that is contrary to what is normal, moral, and stable. On top of that they call you names if you have a different opinion in the name of tolerance.

Face it, the next generation barely reads anything other than their text messages. Moreover, the Sun-Times has been struggling for twenty-five or thirty years. It was fast becoming irrelevant when Royko left.

Civilian here.

We lose a free press, we will lose our freedom. It's a scandal what passes for news today, in all medias (PR reprints, newscast "stories" about tv programs to shown on the same channel (they're promos, nothing more) Our Illinois politicos are just waiting for the day that the Sun-Times and Tribune go under; ditto with the national pols and press. Then they will have very little oversight whatsoever.

The storm clouds are gathering; more dark days ahead. I'm afraid for my children.

The definition of media is evolving and in some ways returning to better days. When I was younger (long ago) there were 2 morning and 2 evening papers. There were at least 2 local community papers and many foreign language papers. They targeted specific groups and had different stories and opinions. The internet has returned a lot of that, with more speed and video. More information, not all of it true, is available for review and it is harder for big business and govt. to control the message.

The commenters talking about freedom of the press and journalistic integrity made for a good chuckle; methinks the Sun-Times is being confused with some other paper far away from the state of Illinois and the wasteland that passes for American journalism. As for the ST, Ebert was its one redeeming quality and he's dead now so screw em.

I think the poster was saying that this blog is semi dependent on the news stories in the papers for its posts. There are some original but the majority link to a news story. So if the news go away the stories will be hard to come by.

It's nice that you usually give credit. But the fact remains that you'd be fucked for at least half your content without the MSM you love to bash so much. It's true that the MSM reads your blog for tips and story ideas, but the difference is that they have to (or at least should) independently verify what you're reporting before they can repeat it. You don't operate under any such constraint.
