A Class of 9?

A couple days ago, we posted this:
  • In an effort to alleviate the current crop of FTO's riding around with two recruits each - and sometimes more - the Department announced a list of 63 people eligible to accept or turn down the FTO position. They have to reply by Friday and report for duty the day after Memorial Day.

We'll have to see how many accept the most thankless job (but most necessary) the Department has to offer.

    Good luck.
Now we hear that a grand total of 9 people of that list showed up Tuesday morning. Anyone care to confirm or comment?

Why won't more cops become FTOs? Because the position sucks. The FTOs have been screwed over in a variety of ways over the years AND NOW the department says, things will be better for the FTOs. Right, they'll be better when...wait, they won't be better.

No, It's a problem. The kids need teaching. Sending them out with a Sgt is useless. They will learn to be a Sgt not a PO. It is a thankless job, but the satisfaction of teaching them right and ensuring their safety outways the negatives. I give FTO's all the credit they deserve.

The city doesn't care how many FTO's they have. They will just let the PPO's jump in with everyone else and expect them to train them. The city is refusing to pay out of grade pay for training a PPO if you are not an FTO!

I was told that in New York the FTO Program is nothing like ours. They receive all their training in the academy and hit the street - literally on foot by themselves. In addition G Mac and his guy Tracy had planned on switching Chicago to this model but the FTO Contract got in the way? I wonder if no one takes the position if it works to their advantage? Maybe their master plan?

And in other news:

Cook County State’s Attorney Investigator spends hours at cigar shop on government time
Updated: May 11, 2012 12:57 PM CST

By Dane Placko, FOX 32 News Investigative

FIRST ON FOX: Your tax dollars, up in smoke.

An investigator with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has stepped down after FOX Chicago News and the Better Government Association found him spending hours during his work day hanging out at a cigar shop.

That turned out to be just the tip of the problem.

When he was discovered smoking cigars in the middle of the work day, Cook County State’s Attorney Investigator Bob Thomas said he was having lunch.

But for Thomas - lunch is rarely a one hour proposition.

He’s already drawing a Chicago police pension and makes $78,000 a year to investigate cases for State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez....

Well, his supervisor seemed to think Thomas was doing a great job. He gave Thomas a checkmark for "exceeding expectations" on how he used his time on last year's review.

His supervisor is Frank Cupello.

Cupello is the same guy FOX Chicago and the BGA found voting in Elmwood Park even though he lives 20 miles away in Lake County.

An FTO who does it for the right reasons isn't doing it for the minimal cash reward we get on the 1st and the 16th. We do it because we want to get the best officers on the street who in the future will back us up, take care of our family members if need be and just be a good and successful police officers.

The FTO position is by far THE MOST IMPORTANT and MOST DIFFICULT position on this department !

But it also THEE MOST REWARDING one also.

I have kept a list over the years of officers who I have trained and that list nears 250 and the majority of those officers I am proud to say have gone on to be productive amazing officers, detectives, and bosses.

I will shout to the heavens that I am proud to be a member of the finest police department in the united states and lucky to be once again serving as an FTO.

I had resigned from the position 4 1/2 yrs ago when it was determined that the district where I have spent my entire career, and met and made great friends wasn't diverse enough. This decision was ridiculous and luckily they have changed their way of thinking and once again made my home district a training district.

Over the years I have been lucky enough to have trained some wonderfully talented people who have gone up the promotional ladder and that is the most wonderful and rewarding feeling one can experience as a trainer.

To be a good FTO one must possess patience, a love for sharing your job knowledge, and most of all a sense of humor.

I have trained many people and I would say that most of them would tell you we had a great time when we worked together.

My Dad always told me "Bobby, always treat people with respect and the way you would like to be treated" that has always been my way and it hasn't let me down in the 20+ years I have been a police officer.

I ask anyone out there if you have a genuine caring about you and are patient and want to make a difference please please become an FTO because it is the most important position on this department and YOU can make a difference in a new police officers life.

We are all very blessed to be working and be working for this police department.

Become an FTO and make a difference in someones life, and your life also.

and don't believe the horror stories being told that the FTOs were promised things that didn't happen because this time around we were not led astray.

The commander at the academy was up front and honest with us from day one of that first class back on April 15. FTO JB helped us and kept us all informed on a daily basis and when Chief Gulliford came in to talk to us and give us our assignments he was straight with us, up front and honest. and most of all we were treated like adults and with respect.

At the end of the 3 weeks of FTO school we were given our assignments and to all of our pleasure we got whet we wanted.

Make a difference, become an FTO

as always please stay smart and stay safe.

I love how bosses within the department believe we should accept these positions of heightened responsibility without an appropriate measure of compensation OR some perceived benefit aside from the "satisfaction of developing the leaders of tomorrow."

FTOs should be able to bid to ANY district of their choosing based upon seniority AND stay there after the duration of an FTO cycle. And none of this bullshit about no openings. Every district has officers retiring.

Give priority to FTO's for promotions and you may get more quality people to apply!

That won't happen with these Knucklehead Exempts!

But, then again Chicago is not run like a military and treat their employees like shit! Such as trying to take away our earned Pensions and Health Insurance!

Wake up ! a FTO should get what they get and nothing more . Here's your perks : you don't have to bid for watches with the rest of the watch so you can get 2nd or 3rd watch easier ! --- so quit your complaining , no one asked you to be a FTO!

A PO serving as an Acting FTO for a PPO who is in his/her FIELD TRAINING CYCLES will receive out of grade pay and OT for completing the DOR.

A PO working with a PPO who is already field-qualified is not acting as an FTO and does not receive out of grade pay or OT, as there is no DOR to be completed. This is the way it has been for some time and that has not changed at present. It's not that complicated, folks.

I remember like it was yesterday when he told me ....dont worry about making a mistake on the paper , we can start over but do NOT make a mistake when it comes to tactics and safety, and always back up your fellow officers....

Bob, you always preached that and that has kept me safe on the streets on many occassions because it rings in my head every day i work.

Bob , you touched many lives and mine was one. I am glad you still have the fire.

Whenever a major call or cluster came out I always panicked because I knew Bob would be volunteering us for the job even though it may have already been assigned.

I was trained before regular computer use so we did it the old fashioned way, ink and paper.

Bobs famous line and I am sure others can confirm,

"squad, I have a new partner with a brand new pen full of ink, we will take that job"

thanks Bob, we had great times and you treated me with respect and trained me well
