Just though of a new revenue source for the city. How about licensing and taxing cyclists ...and making them take a test just like we car owners have to. I have yet to see one of them stop at a stop sign and they quite often speed through red lights if there are no cars coming. Between the bike lanes and the stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk signs there is about 6 feet of pavement for the cars to use. If motorists drove the way these bikers do there would be carnage across the city(or is it more carnage)?
They cancelled my day off again. I work afternoons but these strokes have me working 2100 to 0600 tonight which is midnights. F my plans. F my sleep. F my kids. F my family. F my contract rights. F me.
I'm curious to see the outcome of this.

Is there any plans for an Honor Guard for Dennis Farina?
A bunch of us in suburbia would be honored to participate, just so long as his family approves, and is consistent with what CPD would allow or do.
MGPD is grateful for what the 100 club did for one of ours once, and since Dennis was a great proponent of the 100 club, we'd like to do his family a solid.
Who would we talk to at CPD, like an operations section, Supt's office, etc?

So F'ing Pull them over for what you witness.
Write the State Charge ticket, show up for court for the OT and they get points on their Drivers License for being stupid on their Bike.
I get about 8 hours of OT a pay period from Court for ticketing stupid Bike riders.
So can you.

I'm a p.o with more than 15 years. If traffic's your thing, whatever, but bikes? Are you that easily molested? You realize with population growth, it just stands to reason there will be more cyclists, but also, the more bikes, the less drivers, me included. I've been biking more than driving now for almost ten years, know why? Because it beats stopping at every stop sign and red lights. And for long or short commutes and errands and getting to work, it means less headaches and good stress relief.
You're sitting in traffic, in your car, the picture of perfect health, mind and soul in balance, never ever distracted with the cell phone, driving like an angel incarnate behind the wheel... and cyclists disrupt your peace?
Get over yourself already.

I agree with the other commenter. Write the cyclists citations, have them post bond and send them to traffic court. Or write them an ANOV and no bond is necessary. Those are both the very definition of enforcement--it's that simple.

Get over yourself fuck head!!!! You are supposed to stop at red lights and stop signs as a cyclist. You fuck up traffic by not doing do because people have to break abruptly to avoid plowing your dumb fucking ass over because you flew through a stop sign or a red light when they are expecting you to stop, because you are supposed to.
Guess you've never passed me while I was biking. I always slow down/stop at the signs/lights. Morons don't. Don't paint us all with a broad brush.

Yeah. Do all that, right after you CATCH them. Because they all pull over for lights and siren and wait patiently for their citations.

Then I'll put you in box 1 (at fault unit if you forgot) and will be more than happy to testify for the driver of the vehicle at court or in a deposition as to how the crash was your fault--I've done it before.
And yes, I have put bicycles and even pedestrians in Box One on many occasions.

I pull people over, because I might use the p.c to sniff out another hunch. If shithead is on a bike, I'm glad there's code to stop him and 'enforce' all sorts of bicycle-related ordinances.
But, if you think this is godamn mayberry, deputy Fife, and people trying to get around on bicycles are getting your polyester pants all in a bunch to the point that you think you're "enforcing" anything, you are a scared, silly waste of time. You should scold everyone while you're at it, too, Officer.

A moron on a Bike is just as potentially dangerous as a moron in a Car.
Most automobile operators at least stop for lights and pedestrians in this city. I've damn near been hit by bike riders while I've had the walk signal And they had a Red Light and they act like I'm in their way.
And I Have been Hit by a Cyclist Riding Eastbound on Briar in Beat 1934.
You guys are all Hot to trot for Rush Hour or Street Cleaning Tickets for your VRI OT or your coveted Traffic Car or Foot patrol beat (Bryn Mawr in 2022)..but a bike riding the wrong way down a Street is actually more important.

You must be that off-duty policeman who absolutely never violates a single traffic law in his personal car. The same one who, if he ever gets pulled over, welcomes the ticket he's getting and admits he deserves it, because even though he drives the squad car in ways the public doesn't understand, he knows he should always expect that in his personal car, a violation of traffic laws, no matter how small, could cost someone their life.
Enforcement of traffic laws, therefore, in deterring unsafe driving, saves lives and there's just very little room for 'discretion.' This would apply more to cars because the potential is greater in that, clearly, vehicle related traffic crashes account for the vast majority of fatalities, especially where alcohol plays a role, and doubly more so if a police officer is driving off duty, because, again, clearly, he knows better just based on training and observation.
I say again; a bicycle. Not the semi you let barrel through the light, or the 501 you pretend not to see... or Joe every time you 19p every move he makes in a car with no plates, no license, the little plastic cup, and his constant stench of blunt and weed. That tvb, or that misdemeanor quasi criminal long form, that takes too long, "it's not worth it," and you just can't tell the difference anymore between what matters and what matters only to your thickheaded pride, clueless.

Do you do that for every crash you didn't witness or just when it's a bike involved, or just when a cop is on the bike, or just when you get to testify against coppers in civil cases?
I've testified enough times to put felons in prison to know who a bad guy is, and to know I don't like lawyers...any of them, especially involved in civil cases.
But you hope a copper gets hit, and you hope you get to volunteer your time in civil cases, subpoenaed to testify against a cop. It's not your duty, in your words, you hope for it.
How bout including stats. I don't care either way if knuckleheads wanna blow through traffic on bikes anymore than if they wanna jump off cliffs but it started to sound like all the hype about shark attacks in the news years back. The numbers just didn't justify the hype.
In new York they were complaining about a rash of dangerous bike habits similar to critical mass. So they commissioned a study.
Turns out there are over 15000 pedestrian injuries annually car vs. Person. Of that, 300 resulted in death to pedestrian. On the other hand, of close to 1000 pedestrian injuries caused by a cyclist, there was one fatality. This was for new York statewide in 2011.
In the entire u.s. that year there were under 700 cyclists killed, down from close to 900 in 1995. That means a drop in bike fatalities even though ridership is up since then.
Nationwide, there are over 6 million car crashes annually. 32000 people die every year due to car crashes. Close to 5000 pedestrians are killed by cars annually in the u.s.
Sounds like your fear of cyclists is more like shark week. Good bogeyman, not much substance.

I am irritated by bicyclist too, but what Academy did you go to? Box one means 'striking vehicle' and doesn't automatically make them at fault.
To the guy quoting the study: How much tax payer money was wasted to tell us getting hit by a car is more dangerous than getting hit by a bike. Studies like that make my taxpayer blood boil.
Sounds like your fear of cyclists is more like shark week. Good bogeyman, not much substance.

Not the orginal poster, but I don't give a fig about your stats. Unless there's a critical injury, most bike accidents don't get reported, anyway.
However, I sure am concerned about lunatics who happen to be piloting bikes. Going the wrong way down one way streets, bearing down on you, right in front of you as you turn down that street. That traffic circle at Milwaukee and Kedzie is full of idiots who won't go counterclockwise, as directed, so you have bikes coming at you, jumping the sidewalk curb where it narrows, terrifying auto drivers and pedestrians alike. Milwaukee Avenue, especially southeast of Damen, has turned into a slalom run, with bicyclists cutting off vehicle traffic, giving the finger to cars who dare use their turn signals and disrupt the 40mph pace of the lunatic on the bike.
Bike commuters downtown rationalize they can ride on the sidewalks because the street is too congested and too many of the goth and Eurotech fans are oblivious to the fact they can't be seen at night in their all black clothes and then get enraged when there's a close call as they fly through stop signs and traffic lights.
You, statistics-poster, may be that one wonderful bicyclist with reflective clothing, a sweet, polite attitude, who minds every single sign and traffic control light required of automobile drivers, but far too many bicycle pilots are not. It's becoming frightening and dangerous to drive a car in this city because of them. (And, to head you off at the pass, I own and ride one. But not in the city. Not anymore.)

The striking vehicle is “Unit 1” unless the preliminary investigation reveals that the striking vehicle is not “at fault.”
