Reading Material for Sgt Test

The officer running the 5F website has added a webpage with links to other sites to collect reading materials.

Better than the Department site, he also provides additional links to sites you can located the MCC and ILCS material. It appears that he has compiled everything into a single .zip file, eliminating the need to point, click, download/save, hit the back button, repeat.

We're headed there shortly, but anyone who downloads it in the meantime, let other readers know if it's as simple as it seems.

For the non-cops reading, the name "Five-Frank" is a riff on the number-letter codes used for clearing jobs.

Quick question (OT).

Anyone have friends or family who rent luxury/sports cars? I'm planning a special outing with the missus and it would be a nice surprise. Just need a one day rental. Who should I see who is good to LEOs?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for posting this. Hopefully it saves people at least a couple hours prep time.

Just to be clear, though, all of the information we gathered is linked to from the department's Sergeant's Exam Reference Material webpage. We simply combined all of the resources into one easy-to-download file.

Good luck to everyone taking the exam!

The department and it's no clue bosses continue to care nothing about "family first" or "officer safety". Cancelling our days off time and time again because you want to flood downtown or the south and west side districts with extra police to hinder and hide the out of control crime from the public does little to fix the problem. Hire the thousands of officers we're currently short. Remember, that's thousands not contributing to the pension fund too. Commander, Deputy, Supe - do you have a family? do you have obligations to meet? do you have a personal life? do you need sleep? would you like to see your wife or kids?

I thought long and hard about taking the sergeant's test. I concluded that it was simply not worth it.

I have eight years on the job. The salary difference is only $26,000. Plus don't tell me a sergeant will get a higher pension amount. The pension is toast.

So I will make an extra $26,000 and end up on first watch, in the south side and my seniority is shit and end up getting a full one or two furlough. No thank you. My sanity and family is more important. But to those who are serious about studying for the test, good luck.

P.S.- Who are we kidding really? The chosen ones are already chosen. You need to score in the top 300 to make it and a bunch of people are already chosen for those spots. Save your time and money!

The problem with your thought process is that it's very short-term.
The list may stand for five years. By then, you may be divorced and need the money for separate vacations, college funds when the kids' account is spent on attorneys, or who knows what. Or, you may want to start a business and the difference between your dream and making it a reality would be that extra sergeant's pay.
You don't know where you'll be in three, four or five years. Take every test you can. It's good practice. It keeps you current on the law and the orders (I couldn't believe what details I didn't know about orders and it served me well, once I learned them). And, you can't make lieutenant unless you make sergeant.
You can always choose to decline the promotion, but you can't get a do over on the test if you never took it.

That's some real good long and hard thinking. Now move over and stay out of the way. That pittance of a raise will mean another $1,625.00 a month directly on my pension check. Plus I can't get promoted higher than a Sgt without at least a cup of coffee at Sgt first. Best wishes, now don't bother those who are willing to give it a try.

Not true! You are always a year behind on your property taxes. The bill you received is the second half of the 2012 property tax bill. The big raise, the most allowable by law will be in your 2013 tax bill, which you won't receive until this time next year.
This latest increase is not included in the bill you just received

Wrong. The bill you just received is not your 2013 property tax bill, it is the 2nd installment of your 2012 property tax bill, READ THE TOP OF YOUR BILL
How can the 2013 raises for the teachers be included in your 2012 bill. You have no idea what you are talking about.
You will see the latest increase for the CPS in your tax bill next July

You sound like you need a pep talk, so here it is: People on this blog are complainers. I know. I am one of them.

Here is YOUR chance to make YOUR life better. Forget about the merit, forget about the guys that have the in. MOST, yes MOST of the promotions are from men end women that studied their asses off. Are there oddballs in that group too? Sure are. Not your concern, here, today.

Take this exam like it's the most important thing in the world. For you, it is. The Department will get better, and maybe worse, in your time on it. Up and down is the way it always has been. Stand up and give it your best shot or you will always regret it.

I got that speech from someone along the way. I am glad I listened.

Just wanted to give 5F a big thank you!!!! You saved many of us alot of time by putting together the study material in a combined file.

Now as for Rahm raising your taxes to pay for teacher raises. Don't forget that a portion of your taxes that should go to CPS is skimmed of the top and put into the Tax increment finacing fund.

This has been going on since Daley got the state legislators to eliminate the law that would have prevented this from happening. So over the years and now under Rahm the CPS is shorted monies that they should get and it is put into the TIF fund. The TIF fund finances the mayor's pet projects such as Depaul's new basketball stadium, Maggies Park, and a host of other project's the mayor see's fit to finance with tax payer money instead of paying the cities bills, then the mayor turns around and blames the police , fire and teachers for the financial mess that follows.

There needs to be a Forensic Audit of the cities finances....How the money is coming in and how the money going out, and exactly who is getting what, before any thought of contract and pension concessions.

Don't trust any politican from Chicago or the state of Illinois for that matter, they are all full of s_i_.

Let's cut the Mayor and aldermen health care benifits... let's cut their pension.... let's cut their pay!!!!!!!

I don't know why the city does not just eliminate future pensions altogether and allow future cops to pay into SS and collect. Why not just do a straight 401 K program for new hires.

Two good reasons
One if the new hires dont continue to contribute to our pension, where does the pension money come from.
Second senate bill 3538 which was passed on 1 January 2011 put them in our pension and requires them to contribute although it is two tier
What most arent aware of is because of HB3538 our pension problem is solved without any increased contributions or other changes from the po's. It is the politicians that want to continue their charade of not paying into our pension that is causing all the problems and scare tactics
Read 3538 it mandates that the city contibute their share every year or the MANDATED city contribution comes right from the state comptroller By doing this starting in 2015 and ending in 2040 our pension will be 80% by that time. The politicians might have to raise property taxes to do that.
What I am amazed is how bill 3538 has been avoided and not mentioned by everyone involved, FOP, city, po's Kristlov, media and newspapers, etc Here is the link below. Pay attention and read section III where is explains municipal funding provisions

after reading HB 3538 it appears that the solution to the fire and police pensions has been found. It appears that if nothing is changed to the fund, increased contributions by members, less benefits, etc if the law is followed by the city in making their contributions, our fund will be at 80% in 2040
Why doesnt the union, media, etc center their attention on that law?
It appears everyone is ignoring or doesn't want to talk about 3538 and I don't understand why

The way the department has been promoting he would be a fool not to take the exam. If you make Sgt. that soon you get all the benefits of that would take you 25 years as a PO to earn. If the poster with 11 years on takes the test and scores well he'll be looking at being promoted in 2-5 years from now . If you have five years on and don't take test don't expect another to get another shot for 6 years and up to 11 to get promoted.
