Just the other day, the media reported that the Department said their were only 3 incidents of wilding/iPhone snatching downtown in the previous 28 days.

- Three juvenile girls were in court today accused of robbing and punching two 14-year-old girls on Oak Street off Michigan Avenue Tuesday evening in the Gold Coast neighborhood, authorities said.
The victims, both of Chicago, were not injured but had their cell phones taken, according to authorities.
Police responded to call of a robbery in the 0-100 block of East Oak Street about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday and met the two 14-year-old girls who told them one of the three suspects approached one of the girls and asked to use her cell phone, police said.
The girl complied and when she walked away with the phone, the other two suspects confronted the victims and began to punch them and grabbed a second cell phone, said police.
Too bad "stupidity" isn't a charge - the victims could have caught a case in this instance. What the hell are people thinking? "If I don't lend this poorly dressed, poorly spoken youth my $400 iPhone, she's going to call me a 'racist' and that will hurt my feelings"? Seriously?
And now the detectives are ruining the CompStat narrative by issuing alerts about the thievery:
- Detectives are warning riders of the CTA Blue Line downtown about strong-arm robberies in which men take riders' iPhones or iPads.
In both of two recent robberies, the men forced someone to give up an iPhone or iPad as they rode the subway, Central Area detectives said
If you include the tourists that got mugged over the weekend, that's 4 incidents in just 8 days, though we imagine the Department is saying the subway robberies weren't on the "Mug-nificent Mile"so they don't count - only the actual one-mile stretch of Michigan Avenue is the affected area. The fact that you can draw a one mile circle around a few dozen incidents isn't the purpose of CompStat.

It is time for the Inspector General to review all reported Theft from Persons reports from the 18th District and see if they are classified properly. Many of us believe that the folks at CompStat are reporting Strong Arm Robberies as Thefts to make the City to appear safer than it is.

Just re-classify robberies. Use a Lost and Found case report. Just like in 016, where burglaries are thefts from buildings.
Not a cop. Bring charges against whatever adult is in charge. Bring stop and frisk to Chicago. Go door to door of parolees and home monitored people and search for weapons. Lets get a petition going.

Sheesh... I listened to www.chicagoscanner.com for a couple hours a night while working late the past week or so, and I've heard no fewer than 20 reports of strong-arm robbery of cell phones.
Maybe I heard wrong last night -- do they really sent tac teams to follow up on iPhone tracking missions when the user has an app installed?
Hey McCarthy, here is an idea-Why not just get one RD number for entire summer for all the stolen iPhones. We just solved the crime index for this year for the animals.

My mom & I ride the Blue Line through downtown everyday, to & from work! We're not blind & we're aware of what's going on, but we have bills to pay & have no option but to work. Where do we need to be extra careful?
Also, what is going on w/the sudden increase in people (younger ones at that) asking for money around Union Station, Madison & Wacker, that whole general area? Did they recently close a shelter or something?

Look, Chicago is toast. All of these young ghetto thugs have found a gold mine in Chicago's downtown and near north neighborhoods.

Last Month, I wrote a Strong Arm Robbery Report,Where the Victim had her I phone pulled out of her hands and the SGT Told me to change it to Theft and gave me the BS that the person wasnt hurt.

I have no choice but to ride the CTA on weekends. Unfortunately I will have to take the blue line on Saturday.
What is the best course of action if I witness a robbery on the train (if its someone else getting robbed)? Pepper spray? Btw does that sabre pepper spray work? Amazon advertises it as the spray of choice for CPD.
If I get robbed myself, will pepper spray do the job?

i work in the downtown area as a technician for AT&T, we no longer carry computers and all we have is Iphones and Ipads. The crooks know this and we have about 1 to 4 techs robbed a week. They are obligated to send us texts when it happens to warn us. One happened last night, his IPAD and JDSU (3k dollar phone line test set) was taken.

If any Supervisor tells you to re-classify your report and you are SURE, I repeat SURE, that the elements are there, then request to speak with the Lieutenant. If the Lt. says to change it, then change it, get a copy, write a To-From to the Commander detailing that you changed the classification under duress and contact IAD. They are forcing you to commit Official Misconduct.
Here is an excerpt from the Uniform Crime Reporting Manual:
Robbery—Strong-arm—Hands, Fists, Feet, Etc. (3d)
The category of Robbery—Strong-arm—Hands, Fists, Feet, etc., (3d) includes muggings and similar offenses in which only personal weapons such as hands, arms, feet, fists, and teeth are employed or their use is threatened to deprive the victim of possessions.
In the absence of force or threat of force, as in pocket-picking or purse-snatching, the offense must be classified as larceny-theft rather than robbery. However, if in a purse-snatching or other such
crime, force or threat of force is used to overcome the active resistance of the victim, the offense must be classified as strong-arm robbery (3d).
The following scenarios illustrate incidents known to law enforcement that reporting agencies must classify as Robbery—Strong-arm (3d):
During a purse-snatching, a thief shoved a woman to the ground and took her purse. The thief escaped.

This not a cop says you can't bring changes against the adults in charge because there are no adults in charge. The asylum is run by the lunatics. And you are lucky if you find half of the home monitored people at home. They are out getting arrested for other crap while on electronic detention. Just try to get a parolee violated and sent back to prison. That isn't likely to happen.
