Sergeant Exam Announcement!! (UPDATE)
Well, not quite. But the website is ready for the announcement:
This is on the Department Intranet under the heading of Human Resources. The embedded links don't go anywhere yet, but once an announcement is made, it's just a matter of activating the paths. No word on how much (if any) they are planning to charge as a "processing fee." We'll try to keep abreast of the developments as they occur.

Heard December, which isn't the fall...maybe it is in New york.
That has been up on the website since they came out in the media in january saying there was going to be a test in fall of 2013. Also, there is no way the test will be in 2013 fall like the poster says... that is old, usually they give you 6-8 months of study time from the date the test is even announced. Even if they announced it right now I would put the earliest test being given around mid january 2014.

Ok you of short time obviously! Sure some make integrity, but vast majority make it on clout! For example I took test years ago past, but tell me how 8 guys in 008 on same tact team all made it got promote quickly, yes kid all 100% legit! Kollege edumacation did you well with how life works?
I bet the P.O.'s who will rank 1-25 on the list have already been identified and are waiting to take the test...

When I was at DC ceremony Tuesday, McCarthy said the test would be on or around December 14th.
Chicago Police pensions less generous than other major cities. Problem is not benefit level. Problem is and was City funding level.

There is a distinct similarity between the two. Not just the writing style but the extreme negativity displayed. There are posts in the past that use the same terminology.The guy has conversations with himself that are downright scary. I think that he's the same guy [maybe troll] who thought that the suicidal CFD member was a complete jagoff and seeemrd proud in taking that stance. The CPD counseling services are not just for winos. They treat coppers for depression and anger issues also. Anyone that knows this guy should give him a little push in that direction so one of own doesn't have to deal with his suicide or worse.

Seems $1,500 to $2,000 is the magic number. So which alderman do I write the check to? I mean the lobbyist write Rham Emanuel a check and get what they want. Why can't I?

Just to make sure no cheating the clouted ones, relatives, sons and daughters will be taken to a secure location as to be watched by proctologists (sorry proctors) their test will be the same as yours believe me! The study material is tailored made for them all material are practice tests so study time is cut down to a minimum. All test results will be notified in 7 to 9 months once political I mean budgetary considerations allow.
So study hard and long and u to cam be made!

You are absolutely correct. Went once about 20 years ago when new on the job. Hoped it would be nice for the kids. Was surrounded by a bunch of classless individuals. Tried it years later without the kids. Same deal. Never again. I feel bad for the citizens who come in contact with our doozies.

I got made in 98, I had zero clout but studied every day and I mean every day. I outlined all the Orders and then studied the out line then the orders and vice-versa. They gotta make some whom aren't connected, study hard and try to get some insight on anyone studying obscure orders or policy. Some in the know only study 5-10 orders while the rest of us study them all. I know it sucks but this is the beast they created. Good luck all.

The test is gone over w/a fine tooth comb to eliminate the non-clouted, then they check all the bosses kids to see where they land& all those w/ juice inside & outside the department.
Only then will they release the names for the new class.Think I'm full of shit?

It's been like that for over 2 weeks now!! 22 million dollars for CRAPPY construction/ .
No more than 2 months into the the new station opening back in December of 2012 , some crew came in and tore up a section of the parking lot( which is supposed to be "GREEN" ) was torn up and never repaired . they took out the brick paving and never re-installed it and that part of the already small parking lot can not be used.

Word of advice to all taking the exam-- focus on the things they've focused on recently-- processing juveniles, inventory procedures( especially money), pursuits, and that goofy McNutjob violence reduction order. The rest of the stuff you already know and just need to see it to remember. Answer the question how your supposed to do it, not how you actually do it in practice. Good Luck.

You must have about five minutes or less on the job, otherwise, you would know the original comment is a satirical reference to a mid-1980's lieutenant's test.
Most of the bomb tec' WERE detectives and gave up the rank to become the elite tec's. So if its true, they will be out of D3 pay.
and cannot just go back to being detectives. It is stay there and get D1 pay or go and work beat 1012 -1st, watch.
The list of sgt' goes down do to the fact, the mayor said so. The list is no more ! Take the test again.

Listen to all you potential SGTS: First off do not look fora test before the beginning of the year and here is the reason: there are a bunch of Lts. Capts that go out to a place in Westchester, around Mannheim and Roosevlet and are part of the group that are putting the test togetherm they will be doing this until 3 Oct. Then all of the questions that are compiled and made up by these bosses have to be made into a test by the company out there in Westchester and this all takes time. McCarthy put his PAX501out today and there is a web site that will tell you what to study, but if you are not already looking over some stuff then you are behind out of the gate. GOOD LUCK to you all.I'm retiring at the end of the year and many more Sgts. are going too.
I made detective legit by studying and working in a busy district. I am close to making Sgt. with any luck. Again legit. It is possible and even likely for some. Sometimes when i read the comments section i am reminded that we police are our own worst enemies.

The city is in the driver's seat. The city can, and will, take as little or as much time as desired to fit the city's agenda. Under home rule, the city is bound by nothing more than the wording used in the exam announcement, which is why the city will never publish a schedule or establish time constraints or promise anything in an exam announcement. In other words, your guess is as good as the next person's guess, as far as the length of time between an exam and the first promotions from that exam.
Please, don't listen to the negative nitwits. You CAN get promoted
1. Study at least 2 hours each day until the last 2 months before the second part, then up it to 3-4 hours. You will know all the orders, but you need to train yourself to sit in one place under stress for 4 hours.
2. Study crime control strategies. You will need this for the second part when it comes to the essay questions.
3. Read management books. There are strategies regarding the management of people that are not explicitly listed in the orders but that allow you to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and abilities.
3. Write essay questions that deal with scenarios that combine, crime scenes, preliminary investigations, notifications, reports and complaint and disciplinary procedures. This will give you a comprehensive mastery of the material.
4. Invest in a good study group, to give a different perspective on the material, but never have faith that they will "have" the test. They can only give you tests based on how "they" would administer them. Usually they are wrong about the format, but taking these exams are important as it allows you to see your strengths and weaknesses.
5. Use a highlighter on the exam. It will allow you to highlight key words and will show the test graders that you have attention to detail. Believe it or not, highlighting key terms is a measureable dimension.
6. Personally, I ran out of time on my test, but managed to score under 200 on the last exam even while on a LOA in a war zone. I also ran out of time in the practice exams so the test accurately measured my inablity to demonstrate my mental toughness. I also made detective off the list.
7. On this test race, ethnicity, gender, color, sexual orientation, etc does not matter. I should know. Every demographic will complain that the other is merit. The only thing that matters is the only thing that is important---YOUR ATTITUDE. If you try hard and take the test seriously, there is no guarantee that you will be promoted. But you can be assured that your knowlegde, skills and abilities will be better demonstrated on the exam than if you had not properly prepared.
P.S. YOU REALLY WANT ALL THE NAYSAYERS TO SHOW UP TO THE EXAM UNPREPARED AND COMPLAIN THAT IT IS ALL BULLSHIT. OUT OF THE 7500 THAT SHOW UP, 7250 WILL NOT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. BE THE ONE THAT DOES.

Good luck to all but even the slight chance of making it legit and being a sgt. in area south for 10 years makes me want to eat my gun.Some guys love it but dealing with garbage domestics and getting treated like a child because your commander got his ass chewed at a compost meeting over the latest gang shooting.I'll pass and enjoy my current seniority.But like i said i've seen old timers that love to work the ghetto and i would assume that would be a step up for them.

Do not waste your time or money on study groups. The department gives you the material to memorize, so memorize it. And think like management when taking this test. Good luck!

OMG Prentice Marshall, my nemesis. Had to wait six years to get hired, took the test in April 1975 and did not get hired until 1982. Was not “ well qualified” or “qualified” based on what Prentice Marshall believed was a “MODEL” Chicago Police Officer, (white males need not apply). Got promoted to Sgt in 1991 and Lt. in 2000; retired in 2012. Had a great career, no thanks to Prentice Marshall. I celebrate his death, 24 May, 2004, every year.

Front office said don't hold your breath. No one is coming to fix it because, the company responsible for it has NOT been paid. Just like winter when everyone had a small space heater, time to go get a box fan.

It's actually a reference to the Mauer/Roberts study group for the 94-95 Sgts test. That was the key phrase that was driven home at each class. I know, I was there.

rahmmie wants new blood , I've been on the job for 5 years and never had opportunity to take a promotional test . It's time for young leadership , if you're on the old list you better start to study .
While I agree there is a lot of behind the scenes bs that goes in in regards to promotions, always has, always will, but to those with no juice, don't listen to the bs that all promotions need a phone call. I came on in the mid 80's made and worked a beat car in a district till I made Sgt in the mid-late 90's.
No phone call, no $$ but I did invest a lot of time.

Wrong! 30-35 is the number. 275 is the last number they are taking off this list. If your over 275 on the list I recommend you start studying.

Really !!! You have no idea!!! Stop posting shit!! Tipical copper spreading bullshit!! They r currently at 244 without merit. The dept. will probably go to 300-310 without merit. This list will be active until the new list comes out. That would probably be around 2015!!
Wrong! 30-35 is the number. 275 is the last number they are taking off this list. If your over 275 on the list I recommend you start studying.

I have yet to see a FAX announcing that they were taking down a promotion list.
2015 is a pipe dream. Expect the 1st class late spring early summer 2014 the latest would be early fall 2014 and that's when the current list will come down.

Was not “ well qualified” or “qualified” based on what Prentice Marshall believed was a “MODEL” Chicago Police Officer, (white males need not apply). Got promoted to Sgt in 1991 and Lt. in 2000; retired in 2012. Had a great career, no thanks to Prentice Marshall. I celebrate his death, 24 May, 2004, every year.

BIG JOKE! I took the last two test, scored in the 400 hundreds on my first and in the high 300's on the last one.
They just keep pulling the test down.
