Fuzzy Math Again
At some point, the bean counters at City Hall are going to base a budget on these supposed estimates:
- As Mayor Rahm Emanuel rolls out his long-delayed speed camera plan, new numbers his office released suggest that drivers who speed in Chicago could rack up way more in fines than a cash-starved City Hall initially projected.
The mayor had hoped to bring in $30 million this year. But results from a monthlong test of the automated camera system indicate the city could reap well into the hundreds of millions of dollars in the program's first year.
City transportation officials argue that estimate is overblown, but the test period statistics the mayor's office released Friday reinvigorated critics who argue that the program is more of a cash grab than the child safety measure Emanuel sold it as.
None of this takes into consideration that people will change their driving habits once the fist wave of fines hits. Look at any of the red-light cameras. An initial surge in cash and then a steep drop off. If the city actually released a cameras-by-camera comparison, the resultant numbers would look like a cliff diver.
That's why so many municipalities are abandoning their red-light cameras. The company gets their fee off the top and at some point, usually under two years, their fee outpaces the revenue generated, because drivers actually learn to obey the law and avoid the painful fines.
Not Chicago though - they'll base a decade worth of budgets on declining revenue sources, then raise taxes to cover the shortfalls.

Amazing how the politicians who run cities expect people who own cars and maintain registrations and insurance to not be able to learn to obey laws as enforced.
At the same time, they expect criminals to be more willing to obey laws if they are not enforced.
Perhaps it's because politicians themselves are incapable of learning.
If you consider yourself a patriotic American, you will do your best to destroy these cameras. This dictatorship we have in place in Chicago is a slap in the face to our Founding Fathers and the land of freedom and liberty they fought to create. It has been hijacked by socialists and criminals. Take a stand.
I'm torn between putting fake plates on the car or just getting one of those plate blockers.
I've given this damn city too damn much money as it is!!
Midnight jog with a can of spray can solve this problem.
Didn't the same think happen with the cigarette tax?
The state and the county " projected" a gazillion dollars a year, then spent the money before they actually had any and every one either quit, or went out of county/ state and bought them? Then there was the" shortfall they couldn' t cover
Mike Shields is going to win his reelection
4 shot in 016, one of the victims was a 4 year old, Sunday night.
Hey, maybe they'll put a couple of VRI boxes in 016?
Rahm really wants a windfall in revenue.. audit the GD's and Vice Lords. Seize their dope money and fancy cars.

Who voted these assholes into office? Oh wait, you closet democrats did.
You get what you vote for. HAHAHAHAHAHA.
Dick Mel and his expired plates quintessential have to pay if he speeds
"The mayor had hoped to bring in $30 million this year. But results from a monthlong test of the automated camera system indicate the city could reap well into the hundreds of millions of dollars in the program's first year."
I thought it was all about the children!
Expect more traffic jams. I live close by from Foster and Pulaski to Foster and Cicero people do speed. The city will roll in the money for a few months. Then everyone will get wind of it and their revenue will drop.
Next, bring-on the "stop sign" cameras, and "jay-walking" cameras for certain
main streets. With this mayor the possibilities are endless. And he will still
insist that the city is
broke and can't pay it's bills, provide raises for it's workers or contribute to the workers pensions but there is always money available for pet projects
like Maggie Park and the bike rental project, etc.
Either the mayor does not
care about the voters or has an ulterior motive which has yet to be revealed. To bad Chicago never passed that recall referendum that could have
been used to toss his sorry
behind out of office.

Do you think a .22LR will disable one of these horseshit cameras?

You mean you can't get a TMP cardboard plate like everyone in the ghetto? Jeez, you aren't being very imaginative.
As for tickets go, it will be cheaper and less penalty to be caught with no plates than fictitious plates. No plates could be freshly stolen. On your way to get them replaced. With victim's copy of paper, RD# etc. Repeat as needed. No plates is a parking ticket. False plates is a problem.
No worries assholes. I will simply take sidestreets where the children are in an attempt to avoid these things. Honest to God, why doesn't the City just let people write out a check for say $1000 at the start of the year in exchange for immunity from all red light & speed cameras. This way I could actually concentrate on DRIVING rather than keep looking out for all these electronic money making machines.
So you're saying that the cameras are doing as they say are intended to do? Change people's driving habits to stop speeding, running red lights, etc. Thus creating a safer driving experience for all.
I'm surprised they don't put red light and speed cameras right by the police stations. So to catch those cops in a hurry to work, or racing out after?
If they studied this stuff, they would know 111th in front of CHAS is a parking lot in the mornings and afternoons when the kids are around the school....Think this is just a FU to the 19th ward since we didn't vote for him.....
Four shot in 016?
Merely installing a sign declaring "Safe Passage" does nothing to solve the violent crime problem plaguing this city. Rather, it gives naive citizens a false sense of security, when in fact no security exists. Worse, it place children going to and from school in harms way, while the mayor and useless chronie police superintendent do absolutely nothing to ensure the safety of our city's priceless resources. Adding insult to injury, Rahm's obsession with speed and red light cameras show his real concern: citizens dollars going from their pockets to his.
Wow. 4 people shot in 016 including a 4 year old. Bye bye Garry !!

When one is destroyed, TD 9.5 and McDrunken will have the detectives pulling every private security tape they can find in hopes of catching a plate number. They will spend big, big tax payer money to catch you, so be smart.
I wonder just what is the number of citations issued for these red lights are outstanding as not paid ?

Or, you could just vote the people responsible out of office.
In Tempe, AZ, there's a group that covers up the photo radar and red light cameras all the time. For example, one guy dresses up like Santa around Christmas, gets on a ladder, and covers the red light cameras with boxes wrapped like gifts!
More tourists robbed AND MOLESTED at north ave beach by a group of "thugs." Take a guess where the offender was from... 005th district.

Mikie Shields will win his reelection, only if the PO that vote for him are blind, deaf and dumb. He has absolutely no INTEGRITY.
When the next election cycle turns hot, I'm putting an election placard of a republican candidate over the rear plate, then blow past several of these cameras.
A smart city wouldn't project the revenue from citations into the budget at all.
A smart city would ensure that there were enough police on duty every day on the street to be able to fight preventable crime, react to unpreventable crime, and do movers.
That said, Chicago isn't run by smart people.
How can these cameras be legal in the first place? They are run and operated by a company that profits from the fines generated by these machines; officers are not allowed to personally profit from fines generated from the citations they issue. How come this is allowed?
What no one ever mentions is the cost of maintenance of the cameras. It used to be in the area of $18M when the cameras were bringing in $60M a year. A great return, but why not mention there is a cost associated with the cameras.

Sure! One at Milwaukee and Devon, the other at Nagle and Touhy.
OT: That extra Tall sgt in 020 with no people skills is at it again demeaning p.o.'s and acting like she already made (meritorious of course) LT. If someone turns in something that isn't yours don't b a snoop dog and look at everything on it!
Come on you cynical guys.... Napolean says these cameras are for the children! Are you saying they're really all about the money??😊
With this huge windfall from further fleecing of the overtaxed citizenry I'm sure Rahm will put all this money towards our pitiful pension fund right?

If you believe that's the intention of the cameras, I have a bridge for sale, cheap, just for you.
Take a stand.

Easy there Braveheart. It's a lousy speed camera.
They're putting them up as we speak. Taking my son home from the dentist and saw the WGN crew standing next to the guys putting one up at Foster just west of Pulaski. Bogus.
Fucking jagoff politicans in this shitty make me want to throw up. I hate to admit that I live in the most corrupt city in the world.
You would be amazed at how effective a wrist rocket (aka sling shot) with ball bearings or marbles used as ammo can effectively disable those cameras....just sayin. LOL!!!!
Legal!, we don't need no stinkin' legal. I run this
city the way I damm well please and I don't answer to
NOBODY. And ignore that speed ticket and don't pay it and Uncle Jesse White and
his crew will suspend your
driving privileges. Remember driving is a privilege extended to you
by the rulers in Springfield, contingent on
certain FEES being paid by
you.
You know, if the mayor is able to put these laws into
effect and do the things he
is getting away with on his
own then that proves that
the city council is not
needed and should be abolished because the mayor
is calling the shots.
Make those suckers find honest work and stop feeding
off the taxpayers.
Stop and Frisk law ruled Unconstitutional in State of New York Today!
How long before Chicago Police gets spanked about the "Quota on Contact Cards", as in you must have 5 or more just to qualify for overtime?
Any odds?
Our pensions would be funded if Dick Mel paid all of his expires plate tickets
Mike Shields will win hiuse re-election if: No one runs against him.
This is going to end up like those new cigarette taxes in Minnesota. They don't quite fathom that many Minnesotans won't be willing to either change their habits (or quit entirely) or go to a neighboring state to buy them. I can just imagine the fun that will occur when the taxes come in from this and it is far smaller than what they anticipated.
Politicians are such idiots.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) issued the following statement regarding the declassified documents released by the Director of National Intelligence today:
“The newly declassified briefing documents released today show that the executive branch repeatedly made inaccurate statements to Congress about the value and effectiveness of the bulk email records collection program that was carried out under the USA PATRIOT Act until 2011. These statements had the effect of misleading members of Congress about the usefulness of this program.

I use a Cheetah C50 Red Light / Speed Camera notification system. It's a GPS based device I set on my dash. It warns me when I am approaching these cameras. Works like a charm. Cost the same as my first red light ticket (rolling right on red)...$100.
I forgot to mention, besides the red light camera device I mentioned, I also use a free smartphone app called "Waze" that also notifies of upcoming cameras (and a host of other "dangers").
Ok, since we are talking about traffic cameras, there is no longer a contract in place for the red light cameras because the old contract expired and was not renewed as a result of the company getting caught up in a bribery scandal. So then, who is in charge of these cameras or issuing fines or can we finally just ignore them???

NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg vowed Monday that his cops will go where the crime is, not follow a census chart — lashing out at a federal judge’s ruling that a controversial NYPD tactic known as “stop and frisk” amounts to racial profiling.
How about we staff 16 to full strength it's only occupied with the families of city workers and tax payers.

McCarthy was on nbc national news last night not wearing his seat belt.
I think Mc PooPoo will be gone by the end of the year. It would have to be someone from the "inside". Who from the "outside" would want to deal with all the Chicago B.S.?
I have 2 questions about these cameras. Will there be a mph display that motorists can see as they approach, so we will know whether the cameras are accurately detecting our speed?
I ask because there are speed detector displays in areas throughout the City, and in two locations I have noticed they were not calibrated properly. The one near Humboldt on Division displayed 15mph over drivers' actual speeds for several weeks last winter. I would be driving 25 or less and the display would say 40. There is also one near the Lincolnwood border that consistently reads 8mph over my odometer reading (my car is only 10 months old, so it's not my odometer). This got me wondering how citizens can be sure that the cameras are consistently accurate and calibrated correctly. Otherwise the City could just have speed cameras that clock everyone going faster than you really are.
My second question is: Will the cameras the City is installing be able to register multiple vehicles
across 2-4 lanes of traffic (incoming and outgoing)? For example, if you are going the speed limit and a vehicle in another lane is speeding, will the cameras be able to detect the difference, or will you get a ticket if you are in the photo?

It's a fair guess; he only has eight months left if he's got a three year guarantee.
Did anybody else notice that these cameras are going up in areas of the City where residents who get tickets are most likely to PAY them?
If you drive the speed limit and stop at the red lights like your supposed to while driving there's no problem. Most pos drive like jagoffs probably all the same ones complaining on this blog. Here's an idea follow the rules of the road.
Just drive properly, you won't get tickets. Why do cops always think they're above it?

I think your wrong. The mayors girl, Pang, pushed for McCarthy and now the mayor just appointed her to head the search for the new head of IPRA, so I would think McCarthy is safe
