Memorial Defaced Again

  • Chicago Police are asking for the public's help in finding whoever defaced the Chicago Police Memorial on the Near South Side Museum Campus with graffiti last weekend.

Sometime in the early morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 3, someone spray-painted the monument in the 1400 block of South Museum Campus Drive, which is south of the Field Museum and east of Soldier Field.

Anyone with information should call Area Central detectives, at (312) 747- 8380
Maybe a set of motion-activated lights and video security could be utilized? One thing is for certain - they can't move the Memorial over to HQ and stick it in the parking lot like the Haymarket statue.

The statue was blown up two years in a row, in 1969 and 1970. Pieces of it ended up on the Kennedy Expressway.

And extra credit to anyone who recalls who several of the prime suspects were. Anyone?

OK then, Bernardine Dohrn, Jeff Jones, and Bill Ayers.

TO: The oblivious "new jack" at 12:10 AM

On the night of May 4, 1886, disgruntled laborers, including anarchists, held a rally for an 8-hour workday at Haymarket Square (Randolph St. between DesPlaines and Halsted Sts., currently bisected by the Kennedy Expwy). An anarchist tossed a home-made dynamite bomb which caused the deaths of twelve people including seven CPD officers.

Five years later, the 9-foot bronze memorial statue of a CPD officer with right hand raised was mounted on a pedestal at the site of the Haymarket Massacre.

During the "Days of Rage" circa 1968-1970, the statue was first defaced with black paint and twice bombed. It was repaired and moved to CPD HQ at 1121 S. State and later the Police Academy. It now stands at the current CPD HQ at 3510 S. Michigan Ave.

Now go out and get your pissers, brown baggers and contact cards. This sure ain't your daddy's CPD.

The statue was originally located at Randolph and the Kennedy, the approimate site of the incident. During the late 60's (you think it's bad now, you should have been around then, count the stars in the case from that period)it became a target for radical bombers. It got blown off its base a couple of times. A car from 012 was stationed there around the clock. Its journey began and it was moved to 11th Street, the Training Division, and finally the current spot. That's the short version.

Appreciate that, but you shouldn't have to, the CITY should. These men/women gave their lives working for this city. This CITY had money for flower pots and parks but not for simple motion lights you can get at Home Depot. This is also the same City that cannot fix a fence/ make the perimeter more secure where an officer was killed at 61st and Racine. The bottom line is Rham doesn't give a fuck about us. If you don't think this isn't done on purpose you're crazy. And if you know any of Rham's drivers now or in the past they have told us he CAN'T stand us.

The CPD in Haymarket was not your CPD today. It was closer to the fire brigades depicted in Gangs of New York. Sorry, but true. Bonfield was the political appointee in charge of the detail, and the night before guards or the "police" as they were at the time had killed a protester in a demonstration on the south side along river, in I think what is currently in 010. It might have been an International Harvester plant disturbance. In fact, if my memory is right, the Haymarket demonstration was called as a protest of the killing the night before.

Thats it. Not in any way defending the bombing. More just saying that there is a lot more to the story in the 1800s then just an anarchist, a bomb, and a bunch of dead coppers.

There is no real consequence for anything below and including Agg Battery (w/ no firearm)... if it was just a hammer or an up charge on a postal worker, CTA, CFD or CPD they fucking walk. Shit the actors will probably tweet a video of it eventually. They know they don't face shit.

"then you must be left handed" at that point one of the casino security guards took a hammer and slammed about six times on the of the poker players left hand" that is what they should do to these sobs who defaced our great memorial. also robert deniro said "throw him into the alley tell the cops he got hit by a car"
