Speed Cameras Arrive

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration on Friday chose the first 12 locations for speed cameras near schools and parks and disclosed that up to 18 percent of motorists clocked were caught speeding during a two-month pilot program.

Speed cameras will be installed next week at Garfield Park, 100 N. Central Park Ave.; Gompers Park, 4222 W. Foster; Washington Park, 5531 S. King Drive; Marquette Park, 6743 S. Kedzie; Humboldt Park, 1440 N. Humboldt; Douglas Park, 1401 S. Sacramento, and Curie High School 4959 S. Archer.

They will also be installed at McKinley Park, 2210 W. Pershing; Jones High School, 606 S. State; Legion Park, 3100 W. Bryn Mawr; Abbott Park, 49 E. 95th St., and Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 W. 111th Street.

The cameras at Garfield, Gompers, Washington and Marquette parks will be installed first.
Hours of operation are 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM for school cameras. We don't know if they're sticking with "a child/pedestrian must be present" for the ones around schools, but assume that they are. The ones around parks? The article is less specific if those are running 24-7.

Gee if it was all about "the children" one would think that one would focus on those children most at risk -- which would be the little ones in grade school, yeah?

So why are they going in at high schools first?

It wouldn't be that perhaps those locations that have been chosen are determined to be the highest revenue generating locations now would they?

Nevertheless, when the city traffic comes to a standstill just look at all that tax revenue from the wasted gasoline being burnt-up as the citizens sit with motors idling.

What a bonanza!!

Let's see how many CTA bus and Chicago Streets and Sans trucks we can get.

"We don't know if they're sticking with "a child/pedestrian must be present" for the ones around schools..."

How will they prove that? You need someone to testify, i.e. a copper, that it was "...a school day when children are present...". It also has to be CHILDREN in school zones, not mere pedestrians.

What are they going to do photograph kids on the street? That's not too weird at all.

Everyone that gets a ticket for 10 over or less should ask for a court date. This will back up the system and drive judges totally crazy. When I ever did radar and that was a while ago, I would never issue a ticket for anything under 13 miles. The judge would throw it out and look at me like I was an idiot to waste his time.

You guys are missing the point. These are "SPEED" cameras and take note of the
locations, in the parks and what school children are going to be at those locations. And they omitted
a very notorious intersection from their list, Roosevelt Road and Independence Blvd. in all four directions. Fess-up mayor, this is just another money-grab, but inquiring minds want to know, what are
your plans for all this money you are raising from
your various schemes and cameras ?

Parking meters that charge as much as a parking lot.

Next handicapped parking spots clutter up residential street.

Next is residential parking forcing everyone to pay to park in front of their own home.

Raise the rates of city stickers.

speed humps installed in all side streets that are used as short cuts.

bike lanes block up major street making 2 lanes 1.

** Future speed camera on all major streets

** bike lanes on lake shore drive

** Bus only lanes on Western and Ashland

Total gridlock achieved forcing everyone to ride bike causing the city to lose tax revenue from gasoline and city stickers!!

If you do not believe me just go out there and drive the POSTED speed limit throughout the city, you have to ride the brake for your vehicle not to go past the speed limit. I have tried it already and it is impossible to not speed over the posted limit unless you ride the brake. Did some research on the ECM and none of it seems to work; the vendors have already countered the ECM that was on the market. It seems the most effective device is a GPS-linked, dash-mounted machine that plugs in to your lighter. It tells you when you're about to hit a camera zone, based on a database that is updated regularly.

You pay $20 a year to subscribe to the database and get the updates. You pay about $500 for the device. So two cars equal $1,000. It would take a while for this to pay for itself but my guess is it will. And I will buy these just to avoid giving the money to the city for some BS tickets that I'm sure I'll get for driving at the limit or below.

In the meantime don't waste your money on the sprays or the reflective covers, or even the clever device that beams a white light back at the camera. That will only work against stills, not video. Other devices will obscure the plate completely but that seems dumb; the law is you can't obscure the plate and if you know when to obscure, you know when to slow down.

The GPS device is known as the Passport and it doubles as a radar detector, which I'm told is illegal only in Virginia and DC.

Having moved OUT of Chicago 8 years ago.. I HATE going back into the city.. Where I it takes me almost as long to go 2 miles once I get off the expressway as it does to drive the 40 miles into the city (takes 20-25 minutes on a clear expressway) and 15-20 to drive from the expressway to my kids house.. ON the up side since they have ruined the city so well my daughter spends the summer out at my house where not only is the shopping better..taxes lower.. stores cleaner.. people nicer.. and more room for the kids to run. while she looks to buy a house out of Chicago..
