Gun Registry Gone (Soon)

About time:
  • A decades-old requirement for Chicago gun owners to register their firearms will soon be off the books after a panel of aldermen on Monday recommended repealing it.

If the full City Council agrees as expected on Wednesday, it will be the first time in Chicago since 1968 that legal guns don't have to be registered. That's when then-Mayor Richard J. Daley set up a city gun registry.

The latest blow to the city's gun control efforts was set in motion by a federal appeals court ruling late last year ordering Illinois lawmakers to allow the carrying of concealed handguns. The General Assembly gave final approval in July to a concealed carry law that gives sole control of gun permits and licensing to the state. That meant the city gun registry had to go.

Although Ald. Ed Burke, 14th, the architect of many of the city's gun control measures, and several of his colleagues accepted the changes like a dose of bad medicine, Todd Vandermyde, an Illinois lobbyist for the National Rifle Association, called them "a start."
Crime is still down and at last report, not a single registered gun had anything to do with any homicides. Now maybe we can stop calling the Gun Desk and hearing the words, "Clear, not registered." We could use the help on the streets.

They will likely keep the gun desk open for the only group of people they can still require to register their guns: the police department.

How does this effect us? I thought I've read somewhere that retired P.O.'s or P.O.'s still have to abide by some rule/law where the citizens do not. I forgot what it was about.

- Does this mean we still have to register any new duty guns?
- And how long can the city keep the old registries of our non duty weapons? Will they have to scrap them?

Maybe what I read stated that we still have to register firearms? That doesn't make sense. But come to think of it, nothing these politicians say makes much sense.

It sounds like a cliche' but gun control isn't about guns, it's about control.

In a somewhat related story.

A pro gun-control Colorado State senator / democrat president were shown the door today in a recall vote along with a second state senator that voted yes on magazine clip size.

Buh-bye, Buh-bye, bye!

We need the recall mechanism here at all levels. How do we get it going?

There's only 1-2 sworn officers at a given time working the gun desk and sometimes there are non working it.. They also handle leads (warrants, out of state agencies), and central booking. If u think there are a bunch of officers working gun desk u are sadly mistaken. And the ones that do work it are IOD and couldn't go through a metal detector without setting it off.

I'm not a police officer but about 5 years ago, I moved to Chicago and really had no idea what the 'gun situation' was other than it was considerably different than where I then lived in Austin.

I called to ask and was forwarded to what I can only assume was the 'gun desk'. Eventually I got put through to a man who was quite sympathetic and I could tell was no fan of the BS law, but the initial conversation with the woman who answered the phone went went pretty much exactly like this.

Me: "Hello, I've been connected to your department because I'm moving to Chicago from Texas and will be bringing some guns with me. I understand that you guys have some eccentric regulations about this kind of stuff?

Woman: About how many guns will you be bringing?

Me: I'm not entirely sure.

Woman: Well about how many?

Me: I'd say more than 50, less than 100...

Woman: (dead silence). Pardon me?

Me: If I had to guess, I'd say more than 50, less than 100.

Woman: (awkward pause) Let me transfer you..

Aw Come On SCC!

You know that the criminal-political/media apparatus of Chicago has to "know" where the "Police" guns are at...

Everybody else is a citizen, Policemen are indentured servants by virtue of employment...

Can't have you Coppers armed, free and unchecked... You might get funny ideas to help bring down the powers that be.
