Koschman Case Closed

  • Nearly 10 months after former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s nephew Richard J. “R.J.” Vanecko was indicted in the 2004 death of David Koschman, a grand jury investigation into the way police and prosecutors handled the case has ended, and no new indictments will be issued.

The 17-month-investigation led by court-appointed special prosecutor Dan K. Webb didn’t clear police and prosecutors of wrongdoing in their original investigation of Koschman’s death. Instead, Webb said Thursday in announcing the end of the probe that the statute of limitations on bringing criminal charges in that investigation had run out.

“No additional indictments have been sought because the applicable statute of limitations bars any prosecutions under state law for the Chicago Police Department and Cook County state’s attorney’s office actions taken in 2004,” Webb said in a court filing.
Interesting wording there - "...didn’t clear police and prosecutors of wrongdoing in their original investigation of Koschman’s death. Instead, Webb said Thursday in announcing the end of the probe that the statute of limitations on bringing criminal charges in that investigation had run out."

So someone probably did something wrong, but the time-frame for proving it has expired. A lot of sphincters just loosened up across Daley-land.

If anyone doesn't think for a minute this was going to end differently I have a bridge to sell them in Louisiana. It's a travisty and another prime example of clout ruling everything.

Webb's "Investigators" had reached their conclusions then "investigated'. Some good reputations are going to be trashed by "investigators" who acted like they were trying out for an episode of 'Liberals and Order', and didn't get the part.

Dan, You can tell who 'helped' the Daley Crime Family. Just look for sudden promotions or transfers, being supported for a public office run, or being named a Judge. You know, the people you hang out with. Oh, and how is that McHenry County Daley family Judge working out?

No Danny, you won't get to be a Judge. But you may just get your and your 'investigators' keester sued off.

If things were reversed and what happened to Koschman, occurred to Vanecko; Koschman would be doing life in Menard.

Unfortunately, no surprises here. Just another reason why the mayor's office, as corrupt as it is, should not oversee any police activity.

When the boss-man says look the other way, at the end of the day, he's still the boss.

You mean a Daley relative killed one of the peasants on the street and nothing is going to be done? How strange.

Hundreds of years ago, the lord of the land could kill his serfs and nothing would be done either. Times have not changed at all. We don't live in a republic with a constitution, we live in a banana republic run by a dictator. Because you voted for it.

One can only dream.

Also SSC did you see the Craglist post from the SA Rob vic post on Crime in Wrigleyville? It's a riot.

Indictment for what? Not charging a one-punch-everybody-drunk case? Word is that all the 'evidence' they had came from a disgruntled former ASA.

There isn't.
Now, re-read this part SLOWLY.

"Nearly 10 months after former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s nephew Richard J. “R.J.” Vanecko was indicted in the 2004 death of David Koschman, a grand jury investigation into the way police and prosecutors handled the case has ended, and no new indictments will be issued"

Vanecko indicted.
No NEW indictments.

Vanecko's trial is PENDING.
No NEW indictments means no police or ASAs will be charged with misconduct.

The statute of limitations for civil redress has also expired. The only thing the family can do at this time is ask for administrative charges on the PO's who were involved.

This might occur to make things look legitimate, but don't expect anyone to actually be held accountable!

There is too much CLOUT involved here!

The trick bag for the detectives who covered up for Vanecko comes during his trial. The detectives will be called to the stand and testify. They better hope they don't get tripped up by the prosecutor's questioning. They aren't off of the hook yet.

This is the exact opposite of what happened to me! The clout pushed and pushed for prosecution which eventually led to me going to prison. It amazes me how easily people are to put blame on someone just for their family ties. I couldn't imagine if the guy I hit ended up dying, or if my last name were related to the Daley family. I can't stand the Daley's and what they turned this city into....but a fight that was probably started by the deceased is still just that a fight that ended badly. It's a tragedy that no one can change. Sending someone to prison without any evidence showing any wrong doing is ridiculous.

why did it take 9 years to close a "one punch everybody drunk case"?

9/23/2013 04:04:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I keep hearing: if the tables had been turned and it was Vanecko who was killed Koschman would already be doing life.
I say, if it were somebody other than Vanecko who threw the punch would anyone here give a crap? This type of incident happens more than anyone could believe (especially in the "entertainment" districts) and the typical result is no charges. Why is this case different?

9/23/2013 02:36:00 PM

because it took 9 years and a newspaper article to "close" the case.is that how the investigations into all the other fights conclude. if so you got a point.
