The Danger of Liquor Stores

  • Chicagoans near a liquor store or bar on the city's South or West sides are up to roughly 500 times more likely to be shot than other people in the neighborhood, according to an abstract of a study released Wednesday by Northwestern University.
Though violent crime is a persistent issue in some distressed neighborhoods, Dr. Marie Crandall says there is a link between a troubled neighborhood resident's proximity to a liquor retailer and the risk of becoming a victim of gun violence.

Crandall, an associate professor of surgery at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine and a trauma surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said she expects the study's conclusions to be controversial.
And why would the be controversial?
  • The study found that gun violence rates near liquor stores in Chicago's southern and western portions stand in stark contrast with the rest of the city. Crandall found no clear link between liquor retailers and gun violence in more affluent areas but said clear risks are apparent in more impoverished areas such as Austin, Woodlawn, Roseland and Englewood.
Well, the simpleton would associate minority violence with liquor stores, rendering the findings "controversial."

But an impartial observer, like a cop, might associate certain risky behaviors (drug dealing, drug use, prostitution, link fraud, fencing of stolen goods, etc) with high traffic locations such as ::gasp!!:: liquor stores, which makes the findings about as controversial as "the Cubs suck because of a billy goat."

We should be scientists. Our studies would be works of art and revolutionize the entire field.

we should ban these liquor stores and bars, declare a war on them. politicians like to declare war on things.

put up some cameras at these places. track the credit cards used there and once we know who it going to them we can tow their cars and charge them $2,000 fines and such.

in fact if you have a next door neighbor that goes to the bar or liqueur store then your entire block should be held responsible and all their cars should be towed.

makes as much sense as going after the person doing public urination or the person trowing a butt out the window in order to stop the shootings.

zon the west and south side there are liquor stores on about every other block. There are also about two store front churches on each block thereby making it more likely to be shot drinking in front of a store front church.

I wonder how much more likely you're to get shot while standing with a group, formed into a semi circle about 3 ft into the street, while drinking from a little plastic cup, and next to a car blaring music?

People die near liquor stores because the hospitals and healthcare is underfunded and the quality of these services remains low because poor people of color systematically suffer from a racist and oppressive society controlled by rich white people!

If that doctor really cared about black folks getting shot, she would be asking why aren't there more hospitals near liquor stores. Or better still, why don't they require more doctors to live in black neighborhoods?

Besides, I heard the real reason for the killings isn't the liquor stores, it's all the police killing black people. I just heard, I'm not saying it's true and I'm not saying it's not true....

The liquor stores are the social and cultural center of the community.

If you're looking for some pop or someone to pop and can't find them, wait for them at the liquor store. Sooner or later he will show up.

Omg link card fraud is rampant on the south side. $200 on a link card you can sell on the street for $100 in cash or drugs.

Link card abuse is costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars $$$ a year. Another reason why Illinois has massive budget problems.

Read the new Chicago Mag article about the Mexican cartel responsible for bringing in most of the narcotics into Chicago. The experts say that the two brothers who ran Chicago had no real ties to gangs and violence is more personal than business with street level gangs. I see the point, these guys were making enormous sums of money and why get involved with petty BS, violence only brings heat. Interesting article for those interested.

A Chicago citizen out on the streets at 300am standing in front of a gun barrel looking for drugs arguing over the last gulp of a 40 ouncer has a 2 million time greater chance of being blown away than one at home and in bed with the alarm clock set to get up and go to work.

This might be controversial. It also cost $47 million in tax dollars in the latest study of bullshit conducted by fools.

The government is developing a multi-million dollar bullet shield that will slide between the gun barrel and chest and head of potential victims that is 75% effective in preventing gunshot deaths.

The government is giving a $62 billion dollar no-bid contract to Halliburton to produce these new devices initially called the "Sav-A-Mother-Fucker's-Ass-Device." Alternate names for the shield are the "My-baby-is-a-good-boy" shield and the "He-was-just-turning-his-life-around" protective device.

I have a question for the civilian readers out there. The superintendent just stated that the city will pay approximately 100 Million Dollars in overtime to the Chicago Police. This due to the Violence Reduction Initiative.
If you didn't know this is to buy back officers on their days off to patrol 20 High Crime areas. The areas encompass about 20 % of the city. My guess is none of these officers are sent to your neighborhood.
In addition over the past year 300 new recruits came into the Police Academy and are now on the streets. Where you might ask? Well they also are assigned to these same Impact Zones on the south and West sides. These are officers who in past years would have been working beats cars in every area of the city.
So all the overtime officers and all the new officers in 20 % of the city. In areas that pay little or no taxes, and no extra police service in the rest of the city, The areas that pays the lion share of the taxes. Why aren’t everyone of you calling your alderman and demanding an explanation?
Just wondering

want to solve crime in Chicago with less Police Officers
Every person on welfare with more than one child , every male over 18 that isn't working that is associated with gangs , every illegal immigrant should be shipped out ,free transportation to a warmer climate. Tent cities , barracks etc , give people basic foods to survive , require they work in the tent city , reservation , dig ditches for drainage , water lines , work in a community kitchen . If and when they want a better life , hard work to purchase better meals , then they can apply for work , be taken off welfare rolls and become contributors to their community .
Criminals also be put in a tent city ,surrounded by guards and guard dogs , fenced in , given basic food to survive and let the criminals maintain the tent city they chose to live in , no tv , weight rooms etc .
This would solve financial problems of Chicago and overcrowding at cook county jail.

My study is the following. If your store is under 3000 square feet and you accept the LINK card, your customers have a much greater chance of getting shot. That actually drills down further than her study.

Sgts. Award out.

Anonymous SGT'S CONTRACT 1 said...

PART 1.

The arbitrator just settled the Sergeant's contract:
(You can bet the FOP will get THE SAME THING)

Any P.O. on the fence thinking about retiring for the FREE age 55 insurance deal BETTER sign up by 1 Oct. The sergeants and ultimately the FOP will have to pay 2% for the insurance now:

Brother and Sister Sergeants,

This morning, we received the award from Arbitrator Bierig regarding the interest arbitration of our collective bargaining agreement. The award, in its entirety, is lengthy and explains the arbitrator’s rationale for his decisions. The five economic issues that were raised in the arbitration are important to us all, and I believe that we presented some very good arguments for the arbitrator to consider.

The arbitrator ruled that there are to be no changes to our current benefits related to Supervisor’s Quarterly Differential, the Duty Availability Allowance, and the Tuition Reimbursement Program. The city tried very hard to reduce all three of these benefits. Furthermore, it satisfied our position going into negotiations to keep our benefits that we previously bargained for, as recommended by the membership. This means that we will continue to see raises in the Supervisor’s Quarterly Differential as our wages increase as in the past. Additionally, there were no changes in the tuition reimbursement program as the arbitrator rejected all of the city’s proposals on the matter.

The award did not grant us the 11% wage increase that we argued for. In effect, we were awarded an 8% raise over the life of the contract as follows;

July 1, 2012 2% January 1, 2013 2%
January 1, 2014 2%
January 1, 2015 1%
January 1, 2016* 1%
*only for the first six months of 2016 – contract expires June 30, 2016

9/19/2013 02:53:00 PM
Anonymous Sgt's Part 2 said...

Part 2.

There is a provision for re-opening the contract for wages, if the state legislature enacts increases to our current pension contributions. Additionally, the “me-too” clause with Fire Local 2 Lieutenants and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 remains intact. If either of these unions is able to gain higher wage increases, we’ll get them as well. This means that upon ratification of the contract we will realize an immediate 4% raise in wages; 2% retroactive for the period beginning July 1, 2012, and an additional 2% retroactive for the period beginning January 1, 2013. An additional 2% raise will be realized in a few months on January 1, 2014. The 2015 wage increase awarded is disappointing, but could be affected by the “me-too” or the wage reopener.

The award holds the line on free healthcare for those that retire after reaching the age of 55 for 2013 only, and extends the deadline for submitting a PAR form until October 21, 2013 to enable you to retire in November or December of this year.

In 2014 and subsequent years, sergeants that wish to retire upon reaching age 55 will contribute 2% of their annuity towards the healthcare benefit. Also, those sergeants that wish to take advantage of this benefit in 2014 and beyond will be able to retire anytime after May 1 of that year with thirty days notice. Those sergeants that retire after reaching the age of 60 will continue to benefit from the free healthcare as they do currently. In short, sergeants age 55 or above that planned on retiring this year with the free health care will be able to do so. Moving forward, retiring between age 55 and 59 will require a contribution of 2% of your annuity, or about $125 per month for a sergeant that is maxed out. Current retirees remain unaffected and will not be required to make a contribution for their health care benefit. The city fought very hard to force current retirees to contribute as well, and wanted these contributions to increase up to 4%. The arbitrator rejected those proposals.

A copy of the full award will be posted to the web page later today if you are interested in reading the entire 93 page award.

Outside of the arbitration award, improvements negotiated to operational issues that were previously agreed to will be included in the new contract. These include changes to the disciplinary procedures that will allow an arbitrator’s review before a suspension is served, a mediation procedure prior to discipline being served upon a sergeant, and an eighteen month limit to the length of investigations. Additionally, district details will be assigned by seniority when premium pay in required. District bidding procedures will be open by seniority city-wide with a set number of district bid positions to be filled. Also, the bereavement leave will include brother and sister in-laws under the extended leave clause in the contract.

The next step is for the city council to ratify the contract and award. That timetable is unknown at this time.

Stay safe,

9/19/2013 04:21:00 PM

It has nothing to do with liquor. When you pass a liquor store on the south or west sides how many people are drinking? Almost none. Now how many people are standing out there just waiting around in $300 gucci belts, and $300 true religion jeans, waiting and looking around? Its drugs idiots not liquor( for liquor stores not bars). Who ever thinks other wise has been under a rock since they jumped off the porch. Look at liquor stores on the north side. No ones getting shot in front of them because the people who sell drugs in those neighborhoods are way more professional and their clientele doesnt call for them hanging in front of liquor stores all day(except in neighborhoods like Uptown, Rogers Park etc, of course... Yes north siders, of course you have drug dealers, and gang bangers up there, not members but BANGERS). Anyway, its drugs, not liquor. If your property is making money, the competion is going to want it, not because you were drinking in front of it.

Lol at your last sentence. But how about we pull our troops out of this Conflict on Drugs? Its like beating a dead horse but legalize the shit, all of it, every last drug, buy all the purest form of all drugs, tax it and be out of a recession in a year. Well maybe not be out of a recession but the country would be on its way. The Black Souls who were just RICO'd were making 11 million a year with no more than atleast 1000 members at the most if not way way way way less. Imagine what the Latin Kings are making(who are almost certainly is the biggest pipeline to the cartels). Or the Gds & Vicelords. Just seen some show on the BIO channel that mentioned ONE CORNER that the Unknown Vicelords operated on made more than 15,000 a day selling heroin. Imagine what legalizing Drugs would do to Chicago's economy let alone the country... and gangmembers are virtially put out of business.

The sergeant have now updated their website with the arbitrator's award:

REMEMBER, you have 10 days file for the FREE age 55 healthcare for next year if you are an FOP member. (OCTOBER 1st!!!!)

Only 80 out of the necessary 100 have applied!!

The sgt's will now have to pay 2%!

FOP will get the same shit deal eventually!

www.chicagosergeants.org

The entire award:

http://www.chicagosergeants.org/CityofChicagoandPBPA156-Sergeants13-103InterestArbitrationAwardFinal.pdf

9/19/2013 03:03:00 PM

Sergeants retain the benefit through 2013, so if you're a sgt, they extended the sign-up date, but get on it right now and retire before New Year's.
Already retired sgts are secure. City wanted to pull it, even though they signed an agreement guaranteeing it, but arbiter cemented it for those already covered by free premiums.

Only in Chicago can you find such a flaming clown funeral mash-up of liberal, yellow-pinky academic grifters and government grant money guzzling bojank artists.

You will always find Northwestern University and University of Chicago at the forefront of this fuckery.

The "crime studies" these twits have been conducting over the last 40 years aren't aimed at curtailing the death cults operating on the West and South sides...

They're aimed at curtailing any meaningful and focused Law Enforcement action by CPD.

Behold... The forcible Re-Boot of the very idea and concept of Policing in Chicago is afoot.

The forcible overlay of Corporatism over something as messy, dynamic and unpredictable as Policing.

"The Danger of Liquor Stores" is just a word salad and just as satisfying.

The people driving these studies don't give a shit... It's all an experiment to them because they don't actually live in these areas nor are they tasked with bringing some semblance of law and civilization to these areas.

People literally being chased down and cannibalized on the streets but at the end of the day, these academics all say that it's The Police who need fixing...

The best part of that study was the follow up piece as presented on the news to counter the other report that Chicago is the nation's murder capital.

The local stations ran cover for their master Rahm by citing a per capita report of murder statistics which show a half dozen or more other cities have a higher murder rate when factoring for population.

It sounds downright pathetic and shameful to have all the so-called news stations announcing that Chicago's murders are actually something to celebrate, when compared to the other cities dealing with the same decay of once vibrant American urban centers of culture and industry.

But maybe if the next time you're dealing with a distraught family of a murdered child, you can spring the good news on them, per superintendent angry smirk, mayor dead fish, or the smiling bobble heads on t.v, that it's not that bad, since these are the best numbers we've seen since the Beatles played Comiskey.

In the meantime, those murder rates higher than Chicago's?
St. Louis, Cleveland, Gary, Detroit, Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington d.c, and Oakland.

Hmm, I wonder if those cities' problems with violence stem from their Asian communities' longstanding struggle to combat deep-seated issues related to poverty, lack of investment, breakdown of the family, rampant gang presence, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, poor performance and achievement in school, dependence on failed federal social welfare programs, or lack of leadership from spiritual, civic, and elected officials?

Not as bad as it sounds. If you are 55 you would have to pay 10 years until medicare. You pay 2% of your pension annuity or around 1,500 a year so after 10 years it would amount to $15,000 hit. Moght go up alittle but not much because you wont be getting COLAS.
