Robbing Peter to Fix Paul's School

  • Even as Chicago Public Schools has closed about four dozen schools and blamed a financial crisis for slashed school budgets across the city, Mayor Rahm Emanuel this past week has been busy announcing district construction projects.

On Sunday, the mayor was at Gallistel Elementary Language Academy on the Southeast Side, pitching plans for a new $35 million elementary school to be built nearby to ease overcrowding. Parents complain that the site is potentially toxic, lies near a highway and was acquired in a land deal that profited a relative of former Ald. Ed Vrdolyak, who served prison time for his role in a real estate scam.

On Monday, Wildwood Elementary in the North Side community of Edgebrook got the answer it wanted after months of complaining at board meetings about classes being conducted in hallways: A $15 million annex that will address the overcrowding and be ready in fall 2015.

On Tuesday, the East Garfield Park community, which has seen a spate of school closings this year, was told that Raby High School would be refurbished and turned into a science- and math-focused high school. Two of its feeder schools, Melody and Faraday, will receive new computer and engineering labs to get students ready for Raby. The total price tag: $24 million.
That screams "plenty of money" to us...how about you?

There are untold $millions hidden in City Hall for projects that make the politicians look good. Any money to shore up our pensions? Hell No!

Of course the media fucks it up.....

The parents aren't concerned about it being next to a highway (Skyway), but the fact that the site sits on what is equal to a highway......Indianapolis Boulevard......6 lanes of traffic next to a grammar school......great fuckin planning on that one....

But wait....they've already installed the speed cams.......no students there for at least 2 years......their "park" is the entrance to a bike trail .......

I think we've seen this movie before Agnes....

--- 'The new Southeast Side school is being financed through the state school infrastructure fund, which city officials say includes state profits from Internet gambling. CPS' share is expected to be more than $100 million from that fund. ---

How many times -- besides every one of them -- has the actual 'profit' from some new money raising scheme, aka tax, been nowhere near what was "expected". So when will anyone wake up to this perpetual bullshit, like the voters, or maybe..oh..the media???

And not to be picky' but when is this Internet Gambling 'goldmine' becoming reality? ... crickets.
And not to be picky 'two', I thought that the State Lottery was going to solve all education funding problems? Wasn't it; For The Children. ....crickets....crickets.

The following goes into the category "Can You Fuckin' Believe This?" category:

A majority of the 1000+ CPS teachers who lost their jobs are now working as substitute teachers and getting their regular teacher pay for 5 months, then, they'll work as cadre substitutes for 5 months. Where else, but, Chicago can this happen at? If anyone else loses their job in society outside of CPS, they MAY get unemployment for 6 months and/or a severage package. It's no wonder Chicago is broke and CPS is crying poor.

FYI: Cadre Substitutes are given daily assignments and specific schools to work at while getting medical and pension benefits and getting paid days off. The pay is $175/day. The only rub here is if your assigned school doesn't need a sub, you have to go work at a school which needs one.

The schools who need subs ask for reassigned teachers because CPS has to pay for them. Where as, if a school needs a sub, CPS will pay for 7 sick days + 2 business days, while the school is on the hook for the other 3 sick days teachers get per year. Since, principals are now in control of their school's budget, it's a no brainer who the schools ask for and regular subs are now basically out of work or working very little. Ask any PO would works part-time as sub.

Now, here's the real WTF.....some teachers who lost their jobs, like 17 of them at Lincoln Park High school, are getting TWO years regular teacher pay because they lost their jobs because their school became an IB school aka a school for smarter kids with tougher classes. These type of teachers all had 15+ years of seniority and it's highly doubtful any of them will work as full-time teachers for CPS again because CPS schools are hiring new teachers from Teach America or lower paid, less-experienced teachers.

The Lincoln Park HS teachers and other teachers losing their jobs were supposed to be paid until they retire if they got displaced because their school went to an IB porogram, but, since Karen Lewis and the CTU did such a bang up job putting together the last contract, they only get paid for 2 years. Plus, the CTU is hedging on supporting these teachers in a age discrimination lawsuit as this would pit the jobs of old vs. new teachers in a lawsuit, all of which are CTU members.

But, "Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Rahm Emmanuel's Got to Go!"...yeah right!!!

How are CPS teachers going to get Rahm out if 30%-40% of them live in the suburbs and don't vote in Chicago elections? Plus, with Daley out, will Charter School's Bruce Rauner be our next governor? Rahm hates Quinn and loves Rauner.

Just take a look at the City's Tiff accounts on the city of Chicago website.

There you will find hundreds of millions of dollars subverted away from the general fund to give away for free to friends of the Mayor.

If you read the headline on their latest projections, within less than two years TIFF will have 1.5 BILLION dollars of our tax dollars tied up, ready to give away for free to all the connected contractors, investment swindlers and connected friends of the Mayor.

While at the same time they'll be in arbitration or court crying how they're "broke".

Seriously folks, Chicago will never be allowed to file a bankruptcy so long as they're still diverting taxpayer money towards free cash giveaways for the connected.

The city collects enough taxes right now to pay their bills when they are due.

The divert more and more money, and increase tiff districts with the intent to divert more and more tax dollars away from their intended purpose, and that alone precludes any possibility of successfully claiming they are bankrupt.

When you increase your diversion of taxes away from paying your bills and then claim you're broke, you get thrown out of bankruptcy court.

And until TIFF dies and that money is diverted to where it is intended and THEN they can prove they can't pay their bills, it's all bullshit threats to get unions to die off and capitulate.

I guess he figures by the time this shithole implodes he will be long gone.

Keep voting democratic, dummies.

Our pension is fucked. Besides giving "bosses" or suck holes over 100,000 a yr pension we give our Police Officers? a full pension after they worked 8 yrs on the job and got full duty disability for 22 yrs. tax free and free health and worked out of state full time. Injury as serious as a paper cut. And a lot of BS happened off duty. Hi Mike Sar

One of the biggest lies is how some CPS schools have to cut teachers and staff to save money and no matter who you know it's not going to help you. Well, I call "BULLSHIT". My kid goes to Taft High School in Copville and I heard the following from someone who attends Taft LSC meetings:

The fairly new Taft principal Mary Kay Cappitelli cut an attendance office clerk named Todd McFarlin who was getting paid $57,917 as one of those bullshit resource/collaborative teachers(meaning he was a certified teacher getting paid a teaching salary and benefits) and replaced him with another resource/collaborative teacher named Gary Longo, who made $90,067 last year to do his duties as attendance clerk.

Both Cappitelli and Longo worked together at Amundsen when she was AP there. And, it seems they learned some tricks from former Amundsen principal Carlos Munoz, brother of Ald. Ricardo Munoz and son of a jailed Fake ID maker in Little Village.

So, while everyone is bitchin' and moanin' about CPS teachers and staffers getting cut, Taft hires another attendance clerk for an additional $32,150 per year.

It seems to me Taft could have hired a non-teacher at $40,000 per year to be the attendance clerk and used the other $50,000 to hire or keep a teacher let go.

REMEMBER this story when we get our pay cut 10%.

With all this construction and talk of funding, when will the CPS produce a quality product namely, a student who can read, write and perform arithmatic functions at a level which would rival many of the third world nations? We seem to focus on buildings, classroom size, school lunches, school routes etc. while students graduate with a rudimentary education. Rahm's children get the best private education a millionaire could buy while poor children are political pawns in so many arenas.

Rahm made his money on Wall $treet. Thank God his children get private teachers, private security and little or no government dictated interference in the curriculum, lunch selection/nutritional requirements, class size/demographics, bureaucratic rules dictated by the dept of agriculture, the dept of education to name a few. I'm sure his kids get advanced college prepatory classes and advanced public policy courses in Marxist decision making & indoctrination. His children will be groomed for public service and elite power brokering while CPS students will be prepared for those cherished service industry jobs.
