Search Prisoners

Every so often, something gets by us. Most times, it's something mostly harmless, but still a reminder that we need to be paying attention all the time:
  • A 20-year-old woman was critically injured after being taken into custody by Chicago police.

Investigators say the woman was being held in the back of a squad car in the 33 hundred block of South Wentworth while they waited for a female officer to assist them.

Chicago police officials say the woman had a gun on her in the squad car and was attempting to hide it when it went off.

She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Luckily, no police were injured.

Males can pat down females in certain circumstances... Just make sure it's in front of the camera so no allocations can be made.

Many people have seen the video of a prisoner in an interview room produce a .45 auto from his waist band when the detective leaves the room and blows his own brains out on camera. Could have just as easily been a police officer that got shot. Search search search.

In my district, the lockup keepers (still po's then plus detention aids) called two arresting officers back to the lockup and handed them the loaded 9mm they took off the cops prisoner. No paperwork, no CR, just something to scare the shit out of the officers who missed the gun.

handcuff anyone who is put into the back of your car. If you are detaining them or arresting them if they are in the back of your car cuff them... and if you cuff them in the front you should be slapped. Too many guys worry that if they cuff somebody they are going to get sued for civil rights violation. Guess what, just putting them in your car and not letting them leave is technically arresting them.. Its a whole lot easier to put them in handcuffs and in the back of your car. You are doing it for safety and articulate why. If you put them in the back of the car but not handcuffed you cant argue safety. "well officer, if you were in fear the subject was going to harm you or had a weapon how would locking them in your backseat unhandcuffed made you feel any safer??" if you fear for your safety or the safety of others around you and can articulate it then put them in handcuffs, thats why you have them. stop being so scared of getting sued. If your worried about a beef or lawsuit and are going to play police then dont stop anyone to begin with. If your gonna stop people, search people and look for bad guys do it right.. the right way is to be safe! everyone who gets stopped gets put in cuffs!

We get lazy. This is a good wake up call. Males can do a protective search on females. More and more females are doing armed robberies and shooting. Fuck the complaint, be aware and safe. When you touch a spot where they start to wiggle there's a reason for it, they're trying to put you off. Don't be afraid to do a thorough search....you can always put it in the paper with proper justification. Take a beef if it so happens, but you'll still be alive. If you're a male doing a search just document it. I'm pretty sure most of you know what does and doesn't feel right. Always be aware that you might be on video so do the search in a professional manner. Nobody can fault you for that.

Nobody to blame here but the city for piss poor training the last 5 years. This is what you get when you have recruits standing on safe passage corners instead of riding with an fto in the ghetto on 3rd watch and midnights like they should be. Then after no training for a year and a half they get put together on a beat car and it's the blind leading the blind. Cuffing someone should not give you a sense of security. Watch them as if they aren't cuffed. In my career I've seen offenders cuffed in back work the cuffs to the front, some double-jointed, who then worked their way out. Cuffing someone is a safety measure, but don't count on it. And never, ever, ever, leave a cuffed offender in your squad with the keys in the ignition. From what I've seen and have had to handle through the years, I don't see a problem with putting two sets of cuffs on people. And don't assume because an arrestee is cooperative that he/she won't try to bolt. It's the ones you least expect, who try to escape or take an officers gun for the dumbest of reasons.

Be safe. Don't assume because someone is cuffed that they are secured.

I don't know what law school you went to but no it's not technically an arrest. Cuffing someone no matter if arrested or not is for Your safety, it's not a representation of arrest. Detaining and arresting are two different things.

Bottom line is that you can never trust a savage and its a blessing that no po's were hurt.

I will never understand why male officers call for a female officer for a search on the street. Male officers can perform a protective pat down just as well as a female officer! It's not until you get in lock up that you need a female for a custodial search.

hmmmmm, a routine CR number that I can easily explain my way out of or getting myself shot and killed or now dealing with the lawsuit and CR number to follow this incident with an arrestee who shot herself. its not the end of the world for these officers but its gonna be a pain in the a** now. YOU are the problem with this department, too scared of a beef to keep yourself and your partner safe. Use your head and learn to articulate what you are doing and why you are doing it and you wont have to worry about answering to CR numbers. If you have your Sh*t together you will beat the number or lawsuit etc... but no, too scared about maybe violating civil rights when you have the right to cuff and pat down a person for a gun if you believe they have a gun. smarten up!!

I was once jailed for a graffiti arrest in Chicago, the arresting officer patted me down while I told him I don't give permission to search my car, he was too busy calling me an idiot and to "stop watching too much CSI" to find the spray paint in the small of my back. I couldn't get it out in the transport officers car but it fell out and rolled down the garage when I stood up outside the cars. The guys got a kick out of it asking "what the hell was that?" And having me respond "I've got no idea what you're talking about."

So yeah, be careful.

As I recall he managed to squirrel the gun in under the seat cushion on the way to the station. He made his deal at the station to go finger a dealer and they took him again in the same squad car, uncuffed, He retrieved the gun while back in the back seat and bam bam bam. He got away for a while and was arrested in the ensuing manhunt.

I would never, ever think of hurting an officer. (I know you've all heard that before.) I have asked many questions on this blog which many of you have answered and
I thank you for taking the time for doing so. So of course, I have another question and it kind of involves officer saftey. If I were ever to have to be handcuffed,
( which I have no intention of ever having a reason for being cuffed ) how do I let the officer know I can't get my arms behind my back due to a joint disorder?

Unless you are in some crazy situation just let the officer know . They more than likely reasonably accommodate , just explain your ailment that's all.
Thank you. You have always been great about answering me and helping me understand what your lives are like. ( most times a living hell) Please be careful, and know someone does think about you and does care.

Thanks grammar police... I'm sure you have never made a mistake in your life. I misspelled ALLEGATION and my phone corrected it as allocations, everyone else knew what I meant. You were the only douchebag who felt the need to point it out... Good Lord, now GFY

Yeah, people pointing this out gets annoying. I know we should proof read but most of us also know that these "smart" phones auto-correct.

Don't put anyone in the back of your car until they are patted down. She should have been waiting, handcuffed, under observation,OUTSIDE the car.

Thank You. I totally agree. That's how I was trained.

The arrestee and Sgt of arresting officers must have went to same weapon training. I wonder if that Sgt can give her a few tips on accidentally discharging a weapon and then denying it. Maybe her civil lawyer can call him for pointers on how to do that so she can sue.

I was told that the sgt on scene ordered the A/O's to place the offender in the police cruiser because it was raining. The best part is the sgt and A/O's stood in the rain waiting for a female officer to search. True story!

The custodial search occurs immediately after the subject is placed under arrest and by a female if subject is a female. The protective pat-down can be performed by either gender and will be conducted once a subject is detained by cause of reasonable suspicion. So officers should only be calling for a "female for a search" when a female is under arrest. Otherwise, they can perform the pat-down. Remember, you can not do a custodial search on a female who is not under arrest.
