Firefighter Test

First test in 8 years:
  • Amid skyrocketing overtime in the Chicago Fire Department, the city will hold its first firefighters entrance exam in eight years in 2014, but not the way a former-firefighter-turned-alderman would like it.

Ald. Nick Sposato (36th) said being a firefighter is a physical job, and candidates should be hired in the order of how they perform on the test of physical abilities, so long as they clear a pass-fail written test.

That’s the way it was done in 1978 and again in 1985, when Sposato took the exam, with no lawsuit filed after either one of those tests.

Chicago’s first firefighters entrance exam since 2006 will be conducted differently.

The written test will be pass-fail with passing candidates assigned a random number and called in that order as manpower is needed.
No guarantees of 10 years back seniority this time though.

God forbid the city would want to hire the best candidates based on their intelligence (written test) and physical abilities (agility test) for a job that relies on the science of firefighting combined with physical needs.

One day we will have a FF class loaded with 5-2 women who cannot carry a length of hose. Just what you'd want at your house fire when your family is trapped inside. NOT!

All I can say is make sure your home is equipped with all the necessary warning devices and train your family in fire prevention as well as evacuation because the hiring process for fire fighters in this city is ridiculous. Just think about the quality of fire fighter this strategy will produce. You'll have a better chance putting the fire out yourself with a garden hose.

Hiring on physical ability would give the strong and agile an unfair advantage over the weak and clumsy. That is not the way things are done in a PC diverse world.

Wtf. I passed the last one and am still waiting for a call. How can they have a new test when there are so many people on the list waiting to be hired? If they need people, go through the current list. People are being discriminated because of their SSN.

Although testing this way turned out some of the best firefighters ever because they were the strongest and fittest, it led to trouble later when the city tried to promote the minorities hired with poor reading and studying skills.

If you're required to do the same job, fitness tests should be the same across the boards. The test should be required to be the same for both men and women.

More evidence of the dumming down of America. Old fashioned values such as hard work, responsibility and the desire to be a top performer are out the window. The new America with its mediocre graduates educated by public school bureaucracies is the new norm. You would think that the city would seek out the best and brightest. Dumb muscles are preferred over smarter cognitive processes? Instead the city would rather promote the notion of fairness and inclusiveness based on qualities such as skin pigmentation, ancestry and perceived private life preferences. Yes this is a physical job, but critical thinking and decisive decision making are qualities which if not exercised, could result in great bodily harm, death and a most immediate unsafe workplace. The judges, the lawyers and the city administrators with their “fairness” agenda would not allow such a random picking process for their children when they apply for top tier colleges and other schools. You could bet your bottom dollar, they would argue on the best and brightest should be selected and that whole notion of fairness/inclusiveness would go out the window when its affects them personally. Bottom line, are the recipients of public education truly prepared to pass a standardized test or is the bar lowered to accommodate the masses?

the thing is there is no way or knowing how physically fit a candidate will be when he gets hired anyway.

presumably there is some minimum fitness level required at the point of actual hire anyway.

random calls are as good as anything. probably better than some arbitrary scoring of physical fitness, that may or may not be meaningful.

let God pick the new firefighters.

Because I know a lot of minorities who would be offended by that. The problem is the politicians who are pandering to the entitlement segment of our society. I took the Chicago Fire Fighters Exam in 1979 and the same in a lot of the suburbs.

The written Chicago exam was a joke; it was just about a third grade literacy test. The suburban tests were complicated and required problem solving ability.

The Chicago Fire Fighters Physical Ability Exam was a few brief tests all graded in stopwatch seconds. It was how long you could hang in a chin-up position and how fast you could run up a stairway with a pack of hose. There was an obstacle course running a zig-zag, crawling through a tube and climbing through a window. Now I am a big guy and I was running four miles every other night and in really good shape. But a big guy was at a definite disadvantage with these tests especially trying to crawl through the tube and squeeze through the window. A fire Fighter needs to built like a laborer, not like a sprinter. I failed the Chicago Fire Fighters Exam but landed well on the some of the suburban list. It was one of the most gut wrenching decisions of my life when I turned down the suburban job, which included home visits, oral boards and a polygraph to stay on the CPD.

Over the years following that 1979 exam I was at lot of fire scenes looking at new Fire Fighters. WTF, they seemed to be all Munchkins; God forbid if they had to drag my big ass out of a fire.

What in the flying fuck are you talking about?!?

"No way to know"?

Here's the test. Push-up, run, sit-ups, 100 yard ball scratch, whatever you want... You PASS the test, you get called.

If it takes 4 years to get to you, or 4 weeks to get to you, you take the SAME TEST again just prior to getting into the Academy. Here's where things get interesting: You PASS the test, you get into the Academy.

Set the bar or the standard.

You PASS, you're in.

It aint fuckin' rocket surgery.
