McCarthy Clashes with Aldercreatures

  • Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said Thursday he’s using his “discretionary” promotions to ease a shortage of African-Americans among police brass, but it’s not happening fast enough to satisfy at lest one black alderman.

    In a heated exchange, West Side Ald. Jason Ervin (28th) complained about a decline in the number of blacks in the police department’s exempt ranks during McCarthy’s tenure.

    Ervin was equally unhappy about the paltry number of black sergeants, detectives and captains and about McCarthy’s decision to bypass black candidates for the job of Harrison District commander.
Ervin, the son of former 011 District Commander Claudelle, got his job completely through political connections, but he's going to bitch about someone else getting a job the same way? And it isn't really O'Grady's fault he was assigned to 011 - it's a step down from Narcotics we imagine. But McCarthy has made no bones about putting the wrong color Commander in the districts: Ric Flair (white guy) is the Deputy Chief of 007, Jones (black) got 020, O'Grady (white) got 011. It's actually entertaining to see the aldercreatures fall back on skin color, contrary to everything MLK Jr fought for (content of character vs color of skin, etc.) Way to hold your people back and keep them in political chains! One trick ponies.

I hate to admit but it's true. Look at how many clouted/non-working White police are LT's & above compared to the # of Blacks working in the ghettos. If this department is mixed, it should be reflected in all ranks. No one cares when it's 70 percent White from LT. & up but if it were 70% Black or Hispanic.... WHOOOOAHHH!!!!!!

Paris Schutz of WTTW says that this is the indication that the Black Caucus in the city council is aligning against Rahm for the 2015 election. This is gonna be great! And, by the way, how does McCan'tCount say with a straight face that paying coppers time and a half premium pay (to the most senior officers and therefore higher base pay) to work VRI is anywhere more cost effective than just plain hiring? He's merely puking up Rahm's narrative. So 71 million budgeted for 2014 overtime will end up being over 100 million. Oh, and I'd like to know; when Gary farts, does the stink come from Miniotis?

Blacks make up approximately 12% of the US population, but they want 50% or more of the jobs/promotions in the workplace simply for being black. It's pretty ironic that MLK fought to have blacks judged on the content of their character, not the color of their skin, yet today they're fighting for the exact opposite. Why? The racial mix of the department does not need to be reflected in the ranks. The ranks should be made up of the people most qualified to hold the different positions. I'm certainly not saying that the most qualified people hold the ranks now. I'm just saying that it's absurd to say that certain races NEED to be equally represented in each rank. Why should people get positions based on their race? What does that have to do with how well they will do their job? This department is so fucked up and is historically based upon promoting those whose only qualification is who they know. That pisses everyone off. So why would it be ok to hold positions for people of different races, based solely on their race, if they aren't the most qualified? How about a representation of the most qualified individuals in our ranks? That would be a nice change. It might actually pull this department out of the death spiral that it's currently in.

Because it's not just the base salary that's taken into account (pension, health care, tuition reimbursement, etc...). Plus, this gives the city the ability to increase/decrease the manpower without flack from the media running headlines like... "city layoff 100 police due to budget when murder rate at highest in years".

McCarthy is now publicly in denial, telling the public that there are more than enough officers working, despite the fact that the City is already slated for $93 million for overtime costs. Here's my question: when a public official is either too stupid to get it, or is just outright lying, does he still deserve the trust and employment position he was given? I think not. The true problem is lack of black sergeants getting promoted to sergeant that aren't merit. Many of those who are merit are idiots and then get promoted to Lt by merit too and guess what then merit exempt rank. That is the real problem with this department. The truth is if your as good hard working black cop who has a good head on his shoulders and can make it to the sergeant rank and get recognized your going to move up. Not the same thing can be said for a white guy.

Get off the race bs- that's how most of these "minority" bosses got promoted in the first place. Look at Henny Penny- she's pulled enough stunts on this job that if she had been an m/2 blue shirt, she would've been fired ages ago. But even after beating on another PO and being arrested, her worst punishment was demotion to captain- still making six figures, big punishment there. Even among the POs, they don't mess with you if you are a dog m/1 or f/1; bosses are afraid of the "racial discrimination" beef. I'm not saying most of the white bosses are prizes either because they are definitely not, just that the whole city especially the police dept, operates heavily on the basis of connections and political benefit to the point of criminal. Black or white, I don't care what color my boss is as long as they treat us right and remember it's our asses on the line everyday. Unfortunately those are few and far lately.

My Parents were born in 2nd World Ireland. Came here in the late 50's early 60's. There aren't enough 1st generation supervisors on the job. I'm obviously white and believe in 'The American Dream." That's not enough to merit me to supervisor?
Boo hoo, Alderscum. Take the test that U studied for. Be confident that U scored well not cuz of U'r skin color but the effort U placed on studying. I didn't use my skin one time while I was studying, but now they're flat out telling us it was the skin that mattered more than U'r attempt to gain and demonstrate knowledge of the job.
I'd rather see some1 who busted their ass studying w/a lower score then to see some1 make it due to their skin color.

There are few things that are legitimate in this Department but promotions will never be one of them.

For the person who commented by starting out with, "I hate to admit but it's true.", there far too many variables involved in who may qualify for what position. Using a mixed Department to justify making equally mixed promotions is just plain ignorant.

How far does this go? I know...let's hire until this Department reflects to racial make up of the city. And since you're stuck on race, let's also deploy officers accordingly. It's apparent that both you and Alderman Ervin believe race should dictate who holds what position and nothing else.

If you were just a little open-minded, perhaps you'd have a different take on things and none of it would have to do with race.

The 2nd Amendment is to keep the people armed for self defense and it is especially for keeping the government tyrants from abusing the citizen too much. An armed citizenry can fight back. All good points, but are you fucking kidding me? Stop with the logic. Professional sports teams are REQUIRED to interview X number of "minority" candidates before hiring managers and head coaches. The Supreme Court had to decide whether or not race should be used as a preference in accepting applicants to the University of Michigan Law School. hiring and promotion exams for law enforcement positions nation wide had to be re-configured because minorities were not doing well enough. Don't work to raise the student, lower the passing score. Race norming, banding,
Affirmative action, call it what you want. Some very noted minority educators and business leaders have denounced the practice and have been vilified by by members of their communities.

To advocate for picking the best for the job is a noble idea, but it is tilting at windmills.

I hate to admit but it's true. Look at how many clouted/non-working White police are LT's & above compared to the # of Blacks working in the ghettos. If this department is mixed, it should be reflected in all ranks. No one cares when it's 70 percent White from LT. & up but if it were 70% Black or Hispanic.... WHOOOOAHHH!!!!!! What people who make this specious argument fail to realize is that the black and Hispanic population in Chgo is growing therefore there are more black and Hispanics applying so more of the minorities are rookies while the experienced veterans (promotional pool) are white. The higher ranks - Lt and above, or even Sgt - shouldn't reflect the entire dept. Maybe 15 yrs from now the Lts will reflect the current dept. complexion. You don't promote rookies to Lt. Don't ppl get this?!

I loved how the news stations were all showing how city council had McDrunkadunk on the hot seat and was blasted by an alderman and McStupid was trying to talk and was being hushed by the chairman. It was Freaking hilarious and I was laughing, thinking to myself, hmmmm Now he knows what its like to sit on the hot seat. Is this how it goes during compstat thursdays? well...here's an idea: every command position, each and every one (commander, deputy, etc.) should be reserved for an african-american, without exception....the city should issue a rule, for this position, only blacks can apply and be appointed....then, let it all go (to _____).....

Yes, I vote for a competent leader and I say bring back Terry Hilliard. He was one of the smartest, most progressive and non-political superintendents in the history of the CPD. His brilliance, leadership and thinking outside the box led to the formation of a successful security company that has earned contracts based on their merit and skills. He promoted based on competence never thinking about race.

I worked for and with that man when he was A/5DC and he is one of the hardest working coppers you would ever hope to meet hands down. Juan is a genuine good person and they should have made him Superintendent but because he has balls they did not. Juan will always help out another copper and usually you can find him at work 10-12 hours a day...every day. So before you talk shit make sure you know what your talking about because it's clear you don't have a clue. A/5 Gang Sgt.

The nuns at St. Gabe's would have a field day with that one. Besides, they closed down my favorite Sears store.

Al is not a bad guy. He was a good copper, albeit with flaws (those of us in the know remember a support party at Ricks). He just got promoted way over his level.

If he was promoted off of his test scores alone, he would still be wearing a blue shirt.
