Nice Insight

From reader Cuthbert J Twillie regarding the "celebration" of the anniversary of the Chicago Fire:
  • >>>>'The city is in the process of planning a celebration (Cultural Affairs and Special Events Commissioner Michelle Boone) ..a “Great Chicago Fire Festival” along the Chicago River that will culminate in floats being set on fire...<<<<

What..the..fuck ?!? Somebody needs their head examined: --- The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned from Sunday, October 8, to early Tuesday, October 10, 1871, killing hundreds and destroying about 3.3 square miles ... ---

People died, dammit. It's nothing to fucking 'Celebrate'.

What's goddamn next from these dimwits?...'Invasion of Poland Celebration', 'Blitzkrieg Beer Bash', 'Firebombing of Dresden Festival'. Or best of all and just for Rahm, he can be the Grand Marshal of the *parade*: 'Happy Holocaust'.
As long as Rahm is celebrating death and destruction....and Mr. Twillie has supplied us with a few WWII anniversaries Chicago could celebrate....we'll open up the comments to other tasteless suggestions.  Here are a few:
  • A reader - A lot of people died in the Great Chicago Fire, and we are going to set floats on fire to celebrate? While we're at it, why don't we implode downtown buildings to celebrate 911?
  • County Building Conflagration Day
  • A reader - E-2 Stampede Anniversary
  • The Gallipoli Gathering
  • The Taste of Antietam
What? Too soon?

things burning on the river should be very inspirational for 'the children' don't you think.

can it get anymore Orwellian than this.

wonder if rahm will throw any props face down in the river dressed in cfd uniforms to represent fallen firefighters over the years.

think about the tourist attraction that would be eh.. f--king hubris assholes.

The celebration of the E2 stampede anniversary is a great idea. The city could pattern it off the running of the bulls. It could be held on the beautiful streets of Englewood. Corral a couple hundred shitheads, start them running with a shot of pepper spray and let the festivities begin. Those that come out alive get gift cards to Moo & Oinks those that don't get gift cards to Leeks funeral home. Win, win!

Gacy Days....festival starts right after gay pride parade and continues into Taste of Tylenol which ends with a recreation of he Chicago river flooding downtown....and several runways are paved over, in the middle of the night , at O'Hare as a tribute to Northerly Island (don't say Meigs Field). Would suggest some type of West Side Days festival with looting, arson and general mayhem to commemorate the Riots of 68 but that is already in progress and there aren't enough white people or sufficient police to re -create the 68 convention days of rage.....Thank God for safe passage a continuing reminder of idiocy and dysfunctional leadership....

SS Eastland Ship went down in Chicago in 1915...largest loss of life in the Great Lakes Region from a single ship, nearly 845 persons perished.

Any Mayor or Special Effects Dame who celebrates the Chicago Fire by spending then burning one million dollars is a sick moron. Hundreds of Chicago Residents died or were maimed in that fire. This Mayor is playing with taxpayers money. Better to send the Mayor on a ship to 'Fantasy Island'.

----------------------------------
My Grandfather was on the Eastland and he survived. It was an outing for Western Electric employees at the time.

As for celebrations, the Fort Dearborn wilding show or the 1968 Riots Repeat (I remember watching them as a kid as they cut into the convention coverage) would be good entertainment.

Police could be dressed in retro uniforms (sort of like some of the baseball games today when players wore jerseys from the 60s and 70s) and would be supplied with regulation wooden batons (old school) to crack heads.

Anyone on the social programs like LINK and free cellphones would be invited to play on the "protestor" side. Grown-up protestors from "back in the day" could also participate if they still had that "liberal bent".

The "playing field" would be the original site of Grant Park and "cracking" heads would commence at 7PM (to get rush hour cleared out first).

In order to make sure it was as overwhelming as it was "back in the day", all retired CPD that wanted to get a couple of more whacks in would be invited to join as well - making sure the odds were about 6:1 coppers versus protesters.

Better than a Cubs game - any day.

Not a LEO, JAFO

3) the E2 fun run
4) the Gacy chilli cook off
5) the the Great Chicago Fire cow tipping competition
6) the Auschwitz fart contest

9) the Cook County Building fire breath holding contest
10) the September Eleventh bungee jump

Our company, Vaneko, Conroy, and Chalkie, can host these events as a part of a proposed "Crime is Down" festival hosted on the south or west side for less than 850,000 each which would represent a significant savings over the single event "Great Chicago Fire Festival"

The SS Eastland capsizing on the Chicago River killed 844 passengers and crew and is still the largest loss of life on the Great Lakes. How could they celebrate that? Some floaters that you can fish out for fun?

Socialists are sick, racist, morbid deviants. Any group that wants to start a violent revolution and then set up gulags to torture and kill their population needs to be watched very closely. But instead, Chicago voters put them in office.

...Yet.

Rahm is a worm.

He has his millions so eff all you peon taxpayers.

You see... It's 'cause he's so much smarter and better than the rest of you poor slobs with real world concerns.

Rahm's only concern is gaming the system and avoiding righteous capture until he takes his last breath in very old age on a soft, fluffy bed with a chamber music ensemble playing as he slips into eternity pain-free and blissed out on kick-ass opiates...

You little insignificant people he's pimp-walking backwards into indentured servitude? Especially you wildassed, out of control Coppers who won't sit down, shut up and let Rahm get finished doing his business on everybody...

It is Rahm's wish for you all to go to your maker screaming in pain and burning with fever swaddled in chigger ridden burlap rags in a cardboard lean-to after he has made every effort to strip you of everything because you're not like him and his inner circle.

Eff you guys... You and your so called honored traditions are old, hokey relics of the past.

How about a "There Used To Be These People Called The Police" festival?

People can wax nostalgic while watching the soon coming City of Chicago Cocked-Hat Security/ Public Safety Customer Service & Revenue Agents...

"Chicago Po-Leece? Who dey is?" >BEEP!<

"Our video/voice recorder - license plate, I.D reader, retina scanner and rectal temperature probe shows that you owe US a fine..."

There, I eventually spoke to an Assistant Commissioner. I won't put her name on here. In my opinion, She did not share my concern that convicted felons had access to our information and belongings. I am worried about the lack of concern on their part. She said as long as the subcontracted firm is Woman/ Minority owned, then that is good enough for them. She also said that criminal convictions are weighed on their severity and date of occurrence. I don't think this is right. Do you?

SCC. this is off topic but this really is bothering me. You have an embarrassing low number of comments on the trial of the killer of one of our own, an embarrassing low number of comments of the death of a downstate K-9 officer and his partner, but almost 200 hits because some felon passed out the Sgt exam. I think it is time for many officers on this department to look deep into that personal mirror (and hope it doesnt crack) and think about why they became police officers. Where has the personal pride gone. It is easy to complain about all that is wrong with this job. The bad bosses, the lowest morale in the history of the department, the unfair promotional exams, etc. The list goes on and on. But, this is not new. THis has been going on for over a decade and a half now. It is time that officers again take personal pride in this once proud profession and become solid police officers again instead of constant dryers and do nothings who easily complain on a blog, but in reality do little or nothing to change what is happening. As I said in the beginning, many havent even noticed that while we still have a hole in our hearts due to the loss of one of our own (Officer Francis) and the recent loss of the downstate officer (Officer Kohlmeier and Draco) we will focus on many thing we have no control over. What happened to the camaraderie that this dept once showed in spite of all those things we couldnt control? Lets get back to being police officers and get our pride back! It has to start somewhere and sometime or else we as department lose and the politicians and bad guys win.

I agree that this tragic event in history is not something to be celebrated, instead it would be more proper to have a memorial if anything. However, I don't believe that the flaming tutu has any other intentions besides using this "event" as a means to funnel more tax money to his friends and supporters. He would rather bankrupt this city than to have to pay what is owed to the pensions, and this is just another means to accomplish that.

Maybe we could have a Herman Webster Mudgett festival! Build a castle at 63rd and Wallace, maybe across the street from the original site that the post office sits on and let the festivities begin! Since they think he might have been Jack the Ripper, hell, let one of the unemployed gang bangers re-enact some ripper killings.

SCC. this is off topic but this really is bothering me.

11/01/2013 11:54:00 AM

It's not a CONTEST, it's a blog.

Posting a comment about Rick Francis' killer being convicted is NOT a sign of 'solidarity'. It's a personal, very personal, moment for many of us. A lot of us are overwhelmed by the enormity of that situation and prefer to grieve privately, not here, or on faceplace, or on a street corner. PRIVATELY.
If you can't see the reasons for high numbers of postings, vs. low, which can range from disinterest to emotional devastation to personal involvement or the immediacy and timeliness of the topic, you shouldn't BE the police.

As for an 'embarrassing' number of posts, go do your juvenile abacus-counting elsewhere. I repeat, this is not a contest.

Your IL Sen DICK Durbin does not want you to be able to defend yourself

From the NRA

On October 29th, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing chaired by Sen. Dick Durbin titled, "'Stand Your Ground Laws': Civil Rights and Public Safety Implications of the Expanded Use of Deadly Force." Present were several witnesses who attacked not only SYG laws, but also the Right-to-Carry, and even the American jury system. An overarching theme of the testimony alluded that Americans are too prejudiced to be trusted to exercise their right to self-defense. Thankfully, there were some witnesses who stood on the side of freedom and defended the right to self-defense against the divisive and inaccurate attacks, and made the case that laws protecting this right are sound public policy.

Dear scc:
To 11:54am. Although it may seem on its face that a low number of comments automatically must mean that no one cares or people, meaning us, don't care about the officers who were murdered or taken away too soon or maybe that we are focused on the wrong issues. And it's understandable that you might think that. However, many, many officers find it difficult to express their feelings when it comes to tragedies especially when officers are killed. It reminds us of our own mortality and how easily we can be stripped from our loved ones. Sometimes the best way for some to cope is to not speak of it and be reverent in their own way instead of posting their feelings on a blog. The officers' family and friends and Co workers know deep down that all of their brothers and sisters in blue share in their sorrow.

perhaps no one had much to add to those posts.

the felon passing out sgt tests seems to be something moderately humorous as opposed to something serious. is there a law prohibiting it? if not, given the state of laws regarding the hiring of felons it is hard to see how one could exclude them in a legal way from such a job.

You're so certain I didn't post? My post was the one about this not being 'justice'. Rick was on my log for a couple of years and I personally mourn him.

YOU seem to have missed the point of my post, but that's your issue, not mine. And, you missed the modifier to 'abacus'. It was 'JUVENILE'. Juvenile bean-counting, juvenile need for this to be a contest, juvenile excuse for posting, juvenile behavior in chiding people for not conforming to what YOU think is an appropriate response, because only YOUR standards matter. Grow up.

Does anyone know the story behind the name of the street PESTHIGHO COURT?

A fire at the same time as the Great Chicago Fire is almost historically unnoticed yet had a greater loss of life.

The evening of October 8, 1871 the worst recorded forest fire in North American history raged through Northeastern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, destroying millions of dollars worth of property and timberland, and taking between 1,200 and 2,400 lives.

Stay Safe, remember to change your smoke and CO detector batteries when you change your clocks back this weekend.

"Enrico Fermi 'Fish'n Night' down by the U of C"; "the Enrico Fermi "Fish'n Fry" at Promontory Point"

This is why I love reading through the comments on this blog. These two got me googling about Fermi and fishing.

What I learned is that a "Fermi Question" is one that can be answered by adopting Fermi's method of breaking down a huge unsolvable problem into smaller parts. The sum of the solutions to the smaller parts add up to the solution of the larger problem. An example of which was to count the number of fish in the ocean.

The second thing is that Fermi was good at almost everything, but could never master fly fishing, which he termed a battle of wits.

Very neat stuff. Thank you to the poster who led me down those paths.
