Even More OT
- The Chicago Police Department is launching a new overtime program to put off-duty cops in the city’s most dangerous parks, even as overtime becomes a hot-button issue at City Hall.
Two officers will patrol each of 20 parks, which were chosen based on three years of crime. The officers will work four-hour shifts, mostly at night.
The initiative, which starts this month, will cost about $250,000 through the end of the year. Another $4 million is budgeted for next year, officials said. The money will come out of the Chicago Park District budget.
Robbing Peter to pay Paul? Or Officer Paul we suppose. These accounting tricks can't be completely on the up-and-up.

Instead of Hide and Seek it'll be Hide and Police.
I love it... Thank to VRI I have already made over 25k this year in OT, keep it coming please, I like being maxed out in deferred comp!
Maybe I can work the Bronx's Van Cortland Park.
You know, it's pretty cool, not Brooklyn cool but it's nice. Lots of yuppies and a few MILFS.
Plus it's neutral gang terrority ever since Luther wasted Cyrus back in '79. Even still the Moonrunners can hang right by the Vancortland Rangers. Nobody is wastin' nobody!
Can you dig it?!
DON'T VOLUNTEER TO WORK IT! If we keep volunteering to work the OT they won't be forced to hire more cops. Those new hires will be contributing to your pension... and giving you a little seniority. The City wants to pay us a little instead of hiring like they should and it saves them millions, in addition to helping them to bankrupt our pension so it goes away.
Where do I sign up? Seriously. Isn't it supposed to be rolling out this month (per news stories), yet no admin fax, Office of the Supe, announcement in roll call, NOTHING.
Is it time and 1/2?
Anyone have an answer?

Yet, Coppers bitch about no manpower...
Keep working VRI, and these "initiatives", and we're never going to get manpower.
Sure, the time and a half is great, but that can be made at 26th and Cal if you do it right.
Big picture issue clouded by the short term (nice) cash.
I presume that the officers doing the patrolling, if on foot, will be given a shotgun or patrol rifle to carry.
This shows good thinking and flexibility on the part of leadership. This is a very good thing. Fighting crime every day in every way.
When can I sign up!
4 hour shift? That's all? Way too much commuting for only 4 hours. Should be a full shift
whatever. hire more cops already.
Funny you should mention "accounting tricks," our Tiny Dancer was on board when Freddie Mac caused itself, and the rest of the country, a lot of financial problems due to shady accounting.
Do you have to be RDO or can you do it on a regular work day?
12:37, the new hires don't receive a pension. They pay into a separate 401k . This started 3 years ago.
I love you fuckers trying to tell me "Don't sign up for it". Said it before, and I'll keep saying it: Each copper has to do what's best for his personal family situation. Unless you're offering to pay my daughter's college tuition, or maybe you wanna throw something towards this fuckin mortgage & car note, I suggest you SHUT THE FUCK UP. Obviously YOU don't need the money. Good for YOU. But some of US can use it.
Keep that Pension Fund underfunded. Create a crisis.
To 12:09 AM-
It might be time to find a hobby besides this job, tool!
One problem is by not hiring more cops the city does not pay more funding into the pension fund. So set your $25K aside for retirement.
Why? Those VRI guys are useless. They just park their car and sit there. Why not use them to man beat cars in busy districts?
Will it be for Chicago Police officers in CPD uniform at their CPD PAY?
OR
Will it be Chicago Park District Security off-duty cops, sheriffs, retired law enforcement lackeys making only $20.90 an hour ??
I got an idea. Since all this overtime is being spent on the ghetto let's add an OT project to put 016 back to fully staffed.
Right now they're constantly drawing manpower from 016 to send to the ghetto leaving 016 even less than razor thin on manpower. Let's spend some OT letting officers work their time off to adequately staff 016.
What do you say Napolean and McFailure??

The majority of officers spend money on vacations and purchases for their children, not to pay off debts and savings. I hear young officers in my unit plan vacations and car purchases with the blood money. I can only imagine the expensive gifts they buy for their children for Christmas. It is a shame their budgets are based unsustainable overtime.
You greedy fucks are going to kill the pension. When will FOP finally get tough on special employment and throw coppers who work this union busting OT out of the union?
"...the city’s most dangerous parks..."
How about erecting fences with concertina around these worst parks?
When the parkgoers have learned how use them while behave themselves properly, they can be re-opened
So to save the money, the park district will shut down programs in habitable areas to provide the money for the war zones.
Just in time for winter. Work the days it is -10 outside. Just stay warm in the car and look out the window at nobody.
Info about the Park District from the Guy on a Bike:
Just so you guys know this:
Effective 4/1/2013 the Park District instituted a City Wide Ban on Commercial Vehicles and Buses if they were not in the Park District Pay lots (like Foster Beach or 63rd St.). Meters are active from 6 am to 11pm (excluding 1232 W Touy and 1200 W Lunt). Drivers Ed is prohibited in all park district lots, and signage isn't required. They actually wanted Us to call the CPD for a Trespassing ANOV to be issued to the driver and passenger.
If you've never worked inside a Park before, check out the Park District Parking website:

F.L.S.A. anyone ?
Yet another 30-year bond issue ?
As long as I can still call for a paper car, I'm in!

11/03/2013 03:09:00 AM
Too much commuting for six hours' pay? Don't worry; there's a bunch of other people who will jump on it.
Mayor Rahm Emmanuel gives a big THANK YOU to all the scabs that continue to sign up for these overtime initiatives. He can't bring down this department all by himself, and is happy so many coppers are giving him an assist.
Yes, and I am willing to bet this will be foot patrol
To 12:37 am you are completely right but these shortsighted morons will never see it that way
I LOVE how they add that it's paid for by the park district! They must get private funding because surely it isn't coming from our taxes right???
I'm sure Oriole, Olympia, Brooks, and Norwood WON'T be on the list!
Is this gonna mess with my part time gig at the Chicago Park District??
Slightly O/T but Important:
Funny... The tribune online has a big splashy headline purporting to lay it all out about the financial hijinks of the stuttering leprechaun putting this city in grave financial peril...
Hide the story behind a pay-wall.
BUT!
The really important shit that everyone in Chicago SHOULD know about...
"Saudi Woman Arrested By Police For Driving Her Father
To The Hospital"
For this bullshit alone, the Trib should be bought out and every member of the editorial board and all their kin and friends should be ass-drilled into poverty.
This is that picking & choosing bullshit that passes for journalistic integrity in Chicago...
So called hard hitting investigative journalism then hding it behind a paywall to limit the size of the potential viewing audience to serve as a heat shield for the incumbent political powers?
Rahm ain't got time for hard, pointy questions.
He's the "cleaner" making sure all the Daley financial crime scenes "disappear" so Rahm Inc. can steal lots of taxpayer money.
The fibune?
Even the most morally bankrupt, vile, slovenly, filthy, colorful and riotous whore can't serve two pimps at the same time.
Let's see how many parks on the NW side get officers.
Hello there guys. Please keep taking the overtime. You are saving us so much money in the long run. Also cause of less guys contributing pension contributions will have to go up and benefits will have to drop. Thanks again. Guess who.
4 hour shift aka "Princess shift"
Will it be Chicago Park District Security off-duty cops, sheriffs, retired law enforcement lackeys making only $20.90 an hour ??
11/03/2013 08:01:00 AM
Wow! brother you have a problem. Whats with the retired law enforcement lackey BS? Who cares who works these jobs and protects these parks. It is clear that the CPD is not doing it for one reason or another. And, I will bet that these are fixed posts with no car and expected to walk around the parks?

Short sighted and ignorant. Sounds about right.
Hysterical, our numbers appear to be equal to 2011 and 2009 and the city is willing to pay $100 million to simply do that? While some of you enjoy the OT, the rest of us question why we spend $100 million to save a life in the ghetto?
Is 4 hours even worth it?
I'm all for people making OT, but I work with some det's who are dragging ASS after working VRI into the wee hours. I don't know how the beat officers handle it the day after, especially those in busy districts.
The entire day after VRI, at least with the det's I see, are completely unproductive. They just don't have the energy.

I agree with you to a point. You are thinking short-term. The sign of an adult is to resist immediate gratification and think long-term. No hiring means fewer people paying into the pension, endangering your future "promised" benefits.
Hope your daughter gets a good education so she can help you out as you get older.
Anything the city does, or promotes, I can guarantee you is better for them than for you. Do you think they're offering the OT out of the goodness of their heart? No. They're cutting corners, and fuck the police.

No. Only the monkey bars.
And the press once again has no question about what basically amounts to mannequins already sucking up funds claiming to be security/police wearing "park district security" polo shirts.
Saw the occasional brand new suv with some hidden worthless this summer, coming out of hiding like a damn highly paid handwaver, to point shit out to you along the lakefront, then ride away.
utter nonsense. This public deserves the government it has.
if I'm a high ranking official with the ruling party in this town, I don't look at detroit and worry that our poor, defenseless taxpayers may suffer the same fate...
instead, I see a fraction of the suckers picking the leaders no matter how dirty they are every election, even when it's already known that they are under federal investigation, or even when they are in a coma.
I see detroit before, during, and after supposed bankruptcy, stil receiving hundreds of millions in federal grants.
so why not do as so many others, whether corporate raiders, or my neighbors?
That is to say, if I'm the mayor of this town, and I'm prone to say I love a good crisis...
why wouldn't I pull a massive Daley, spend like there's no tomorrow, hooking up my insider friends on the taxpayer dime, chalking up favors and behind closed doors I.o.u's...
when the shit hits the fan, and it all comes due, I will already have cashed in the favors running on the clinton/Emanuel ticket. I will be sitting in the vice presidential office on to bigger and shadier deals.
and that chicago bankruptcy process? Not my problem, losers.
If there is OT I'm working it. rahm is going to do what rahm wants to do regarding hiring and the pensions.
I don't tell other officers how to spend, save, or throw their money away so don't tell me.
Stay safe!
this will be an extension of tour for some guys, you are only going to work 4 hrs, its not worth going in for that .
The State Park Code allows for the hiring of a police force - it doesn't really dictate how... If the Pk Dist wants to hire off-duty CPD, that's cool from a legal standpoint...
Although personally, it seems to me to validate the fact that law abiding citizens NEED concealed carry in Parks too... If you have to have cops because the parks are too dangerous, and the cops can't be everywhere at once, then what to do? what to do? Put criminals in jail and keep them there?Let law abiding citizens be armed?
Not in Chiraq! In Chiraq, you just hire more cops with money you don't have and then say "Oh well, we tried" when some jagoff shoots into a park full of people...
time to vote out all of these worthless pieces of shit...

What are you smoking? You have no idea what you are talking about. They are part of our pension and pay into it the same amount as us. One difference is when they retire it is the average of the last 8 years instead of the last 4 years for po's hired before Jan 1 2011 Also their minimum age for retirement is 55 not the age of 50 for po's hired before jan 1, 2011
Where do you come up with this shit about 401k's?
Budget for Department of Police is available for review.....
992 Detectives ETC....

The Chicago Park District used to have their own police department. Their uniform were almost identical to Chicago's except that they were green, that's why thy look a little off in many B&W photos. You can see examples on display at headquarters.
Also on display in the Honored Star Case are several old style including "pie-plate" stars emblazoned, Parks North, Parks South, Parks West and Lincoln Park.
The Chicago Park District Police was organized on 1 May 1934 and had as many as 639 officers. It served until absorbed by the Chicago Police in 31 December 1958. Many of the officers from the Park District Police were clout heavy and became CPD bosses.
We also used to have Chicago Transit Authority Police (brown uniforms) and Chicago Public Housing Authority Police.
Stay Safe. We need all the help we can get.
To Rahm: Hire more Chicago Police you idiot!

It changes a few things and creates a new tier. Thanks also to scumbag Lawrence Msall. He's has been screaming our pensions are "unsustainable" for years and therefore we need to get less than our guaranteed amount for no other reason then the City can't afford it thanks to the mumbling midget. Lawrence Msall is truly a piece of shit and no friend of the police.
That is the easiest way to change the pension, by creating new tiers for new hires. Much harder to change existing employees' pensions.
NYPD has several tiers now. OT used to be pensionable in a PO's last year. Not sure if they get that any more.
Portage Park better be on the list!!

To 7:14 a.m. Well said, if the majority of you guys would of planned better you would not be in this position. This is one of the few jobs where from day one you knew pretty much exactly what you were gonna make your whole career. There are exceptions to the rule unforeseen medical hardships etc.. Majority of people who cannot afford to survive on this salary live out of their means. Within reason it's not what you make it's what you do with it. Good luck

Cut all the bullshit about dets and po's being so tired from VRI.
PO's on midnights that have court 2,3 or 4 days a week are just as tired. Get off at 5:30 and basically have to stay awake until 9AM court is you have to drive home , then turn around and come back for court. Dets on "heaters cases work for days at a time. Other po's teach school either during days or 3rd watch, not to mention others that have sick, senile or disabled families members that they have to take care of. Then there are the drinkers and those that like to party. My point is VRI is no different than all the other reasons po's may be tired
30 years and I work all the ot city will give me, don't hire, many of us like working , raise mandatory age to 65.

Friend of mines Dad was with the Park district police. Was with them when they were absorbed by CPD. Most (all?) 11000 series stars were originally 3 digit park district stars. They just added the 11 to the front.
Don't they have park district security that drive around and handle their own personal business on company time already, which BTW are a lot of off duty coppers?
Every park district security I've seen when they come out of hiding to try to give you work is a retired p.o.
they supposedly had their budget cut the last time a politician noticed they were racking up a second pension and were doing absolutely nothing.
there is even at least one former commander doing it, some kind of grandfather clause to the double dip on pensions.

Guess thats one way to look at it. The other way is its time and a half and you take more home because they dont take the 9% for the pension out or any healthcare out

Taxes are a part of life and only a part of your income. If you are that worried about taxes dont get promoted and if you want to go to extremes request that FOP asks for a 10% reduction in your salary. That will cut down you tax bill
