Cut Off Score

According to the comments in yesterday's post, the cut off for passing appears to be somewhere around 51 or 52.  Not the worst passing grade we've heard of in a Chicago promotional exam, but nearly.

Best and the Brightest you know.

I'm curious about the highest score. So far, of my friends who are willing to divulge the information, 78 is the highest I've been told. That is only from 11 friends who share their score.

I am trusting they answered honestly.

For me, it was 70. I wonder if that is suppose to be good or bad for one who did not study - or really wants the promotion to begin with.

Well, how about this scandalous info... tonight on midnights guys brought the letters and we were comparing in the roll call room before roll call. a white kid with 7 years on got a 52 and not eligible. ok sounds fine but then a hispanic guy who has about 21 years on got a 50 and is eligible. The kid with 7 years made a copy of it with the other officers blessing to try to appeal it. Both officers said they didnt expect good scores because neither cracked a book for the test. So what gives??? Are minorities getting points? or something with seniority? Anyone else see anomalies like this?

Sorry, nothing on part 2 as of now.

These kind of tests are not really designed around finding the best candidates but in screening out the totally unsuitable.

One you understand that, the scoring criteria makes more sense.

And I know I know but they will get merit promoted and they don't deserve it. To that I say quite bitching about something that will happen with someone anyway that you can not control.

Many times over a long career I thought to myself, "This man (or woman) is an idiot but damn it he/she is in charge."

Some bosses were smart enough and lucky enough to have some sharp cops working and to keep their mouth shut and let those cops do their jobs.

Unfortunately the last few years with promotions of too young commanders and Compost Micro-management a lot of that good work ethic has been smothered.

With those Transfer Bids opening a lot of good cops from Southside and Westside districts will be leaving. Those Commanders who were not loyal to their people will see the problems with that loss because they didn't take care of their people.

The city is paranoid about getting sued like they did with the 1995 Fire entrance exam.

The City had to pay over $100 million on that one because a judge agreed that African Americans do NOT do well on written exams.

The city will NOW make Police and Fire entrance tests ridiculously easy so everyone will pass.

The candidates will still need 60 hours of college from an accredited college for the police job, so hopefully there will not be to many morons with IQ's under 70.

If there are, they will just make them the 1st Deputy within 12 years on the job.

Surprise! You just spent $139 too much on a bullshit binder filled with information that should be included with the price of the class. And the lies. First of all they used a free website to create all of those tests for the first part. FREE! What a waste that turned out to be. And now they wanted to make more $$$ off of coppers so they over charged for a free Sgt study guide that everyone has anyway and "special-cant-copy" paper turns out to b bullshit! I made it on the last test and used CJR study group, that was the Charley and John Roberts Group. It costs $ but it worked along with lots of studying. The best part was every sat morning for 3 months before the test you went and took a test and had an exam, even the week before. So you were mentally ready to sit and take the test because you had did it 12 or more time already.
Best of luck to all! You better be in the top 250 to have a serious chance.

Study hint. Take every order and outline it with highlighter. Then write out the outline. Then type the outline into your computer and print it off. Carry your printouts to study from every chance you get.
Redo above when you have finished all the study materials. You should have a nice big concise stack to study from. Last test was only what Sgts did, so skip the other stuff above a sgts rank but know what a po should do because the sgt needs to "ENSURE" things get done.

Just food for thought… The current set-up of this test is silly. It offers the same opportunity to test for sgt. in part 2 for those who didn't study and got lucky (with such a low passing score) as those who studied their butts off. Organization wide what sense does this make? Do you want someone who doesn't care and gets lucky to make sgt. or someone who worked at it? How about reserving some merit consideration for those high scorers on Part 1?

CHECK OUT WHAT BERSTEIN IS DOING WITH YOUR MONEY:

In 2006, Dr. Jeff Bernstein gained fame in the world of Blackjack when he outlasted a field of 40 contestants to win half a million dollars in the nationally televised World Series of Blackjack at the Las Vegas Hilton. Bernstein’s triumph came in the third installment of the nationally televised series. It was the first World Championship for an amateur, as the previous two seasons had been dominated by MIT Blackjack Team member Mike Aponte and Las Vegas pro Ken Einiger.
A Psychological Edge

Even though “Dr. Jeff” never made his living playing cards, he did have one “Ace up his sleeve” in going up against professionals and celebrities in the world’s best-known Blackjack Tournament at the time. The Fort Lauderdale resident went into the competition as a licensed Doctor of Psychology. He earned his Masters Degree in Human Resource Management and by 2006 had gained notoriety nationwide as America’s top expert in police promotional and entry level testing.

During a class action suit some years later, the City flat out lied and said they didn't do this. I tried to find my letter from way back, but couldn't. Lawyers wanted it to show that they did Race Norm for that test.

THe lawsuit was Majeske v. City of Chicago (2000).

1989 Det. Test
o 3392 took written, of which the city wanted 650 to take oral. Of the 650, there were not enough minorities, argued the city. Therefore the “races” were separated (white, black, Hispanic) and the top 17% of each race were selected to take oral. Cutoff scores then became: white (82), Hispanic (79), and black (73). 619 ended up taking oral.

64 were to be promoted.
• 42 in rank order (does not say what race these were)
• 22 out of order (18 black, 4 hispanic)
• 26 merit (also not sure what race)

o Arbitrator ruled the merit was OK, but “out of rank order” violated the collective bargaining agreement. City responded by promoting 37 more det. in rank order.
 So this is the new breakdown, I could be wrong though:
• 42 in rank order (does not say what race these were)
• 22 out of order (18 black, 4 hispanic)
• 26 merit (also not sure what race)
• 37 after arbitration (so, even though the arbitrator rejected the “out of rank order” promotions, the city promoted them anyway.)
• 127 TOTAL PROMOTED. (Of these, 90 were in rank order. So the 37 were added to this, which probably included the original 22 “out of rank order” and 15 merit. Just a guess).

• P’s had to pay city’s costs of $38K. (City won this case).

********

I think Jeff was a student at the Cobra Kei dojo with a roundhouse kick like that!

Took Bernstein for part 1&2. Part1 test kicked my ass, but I passed. A 65 is nothing to brag about, but it would have been a 50 without the class. Hoping part 2 class will give me the extra points I need!

As a joke, my brother (we're twins, but he's not a cop- not gonna say what he does for a living, cuz some people know us) asked me for the site with the G.O's.

He studied his ass off at his job, he doesn't do much.

I send him on test day convinced he won't pass. He says he kept his head down, just gave a nod to a couple people he thinks probably knew me but did the ol' keep walking like he was too serious to chat. Registered, found a seat, took the test.

My screwball brother got a solid decent score (I can't say or I'll give myself away), but he passed!

Now he's pissed because I am not about to take part two.

He knows he can't pull off the same okeydoke twice because it takes more than study but he says I still owe him dinner.

I love this job. Who says you can't have fun anymore.

I score a 68.73 and did not pass. I also didn't study as I normally do for a big exam.
