Suburban Anti-Gunners Not Satisfied

  • School officials in a Chicago suburb are not thrilled with a state law passed last year requiring schools to post a "no gun" sticker featuring an Image of a handgun with a red slash through it.

Guns were already not allowed in schools before the law was passed, and now some school officials are worried the Image on the warning sign might send the wrong message.

“One of my biggest concerns as a principal is safety and security,” Tinley Park High School Principal Theresa Nolan told the Southtown Star. “It is bothersome to have to post a sticker of a gun that says, ‘Hey, folks, leave your guns at home.' ”

Nolan said she feared the Image could be misinterpreted.
Misinterpreted? How? It's a gun silhouette with a big ol' red circle with a line through it. Pretty straightforward....No Guns.

And placing it on the door lets everyone (with good or bad intentions) know that all legal firearms are banned on the premises, meaning no one who actually believes in following the law will be around to defend themselves or others with a firearm, kind of like that theater in Colorado, or those Universities in Illinois and Virginia, or that Grade School in Connecticut, all so-called "gun-free zones" full of defenseless victims.

ABC 7 news last week ran a piece that Ald. Smith (43rd ward) is encouraging all businesses and restaurants in the ward to post the "No Guns" poster to keep out the law-abiding CCW permittee.

It is very successful It will keep me out of every restaurant in your ward.

And if/when your restaurants get robbed and the patrons pistol-whipped, I will enjoy a good laugh.

Worried about the gun sticker????

Let's be more worried that some of these school administrators are off the deep end. Who screens these people on interviews and job searches?

I think they should ALL be given a psyche examination and weeded out of these jobs.

If we compare them with private industry, they sure aren't cranking out any quality products.

If we just look at dropouts as "defective product", these educational "leaders" should be fired for gross incompetence in "running the business".

Just a couple of questions...
How is it that anyone can infringe on my constitutional right to carry by putting up a sign?

That didn't work down south at water fountains and lunch counters with "Whites Only" signs after the late '50s.

Can I wear a hoodie with a sign stating "Liberals must stay 500 yards away or rick being beaten unconscious, and have it really work? And if private companies like banks hand out explosives to criminals, why can't I legally and immune from legal action wear a fake I-phone that explodes if it gets 100 feet away from me?

SCC, what you're forgetting is that SEEING the image of a gun on a sticker might be frightening and upsetting for students. What about the culture of excellence at Tinley Park HS? What if students under-perform on, say, standardized tests as a result of viewing the sticker with an image of a gun?

So let me get this straight, the signs will prevent some nut from entering a place of business, school etc... who is intent on doing evil. That sign will protect me and my family if we visit that establishment? So law abiding citizens who can legally carry a gun will be denied their constitutional right in certain places. The establishments that deny legal concealed and carry must guarantee the safety of me and my family. The schools that my children attend that have those signs better guarantee that NO ONE EVER enters that school armed with the intent to do wrong. Promise me that and I'll leave my gun at home.

Interesting observation. Was at a downtown hotel this weekend and saw the little sticker on the doors. Can a hotel ban CC.? A restaurant and other accommodations are one thing, but what if they come from Marion by Amtrak and are temporarily residing there? They can't just leave it in the car.

There will be many "test cases" that redefine this law. Please use common sense and discretion when dealing with these cases, for your well being and theirs.

There is a reason it's called CONCEALED CARRY. I don't carry in the courthouses, police stations, airports, etc where I may run into a scanner. Neither do I worry about the off limits signs. The only time I intend to be "caught" carrying in one of the prohibited zones is if/when some POS who isn't about to obey the law means to do me or mine harm. At that point I'll do what I can to neutralize the threat, place the gun on the floor and step back with my hands empty and away from my body and wait for the police. I know (having been the police) that when seconds count, the police are just minutes away!

This is all about demonizing firearms and firearms owners however, whenever, and where ever they can. They use emotional arguments to do this.

The strategy is well-documented and known to pro-gun advocates.

From my standpoint, I simply use their strategy against them. I use emotional arguments flipped 180 degrees when responding to them:

"OMG! I can't believe you'd leave yourself and your children so vulnerable to a criminal! You really should get some training and learn to use a firearm."

As for these signs - they're total bullshit. They should be entitled "Welcome Criminals. Law-abiding citizens have been disarmed for your convenience. Thank you for your patronage."

I can't wait for some criminal to ignore the sign, some law-abiding citizen who is a CCW licensee that left his firearm in the car to get beaten and robbed, and for that same CCW licensee to sue the shit out of the locale that put up the sign for failure to protect him - regardless of what the law provides for with indemnification. Sue their asses regardless of the law just like they sue our asses regardless of the law - haul their fucken behinds into Court and let them explain why they thought everyone would be so safe, that a criminal would obey the law, despite prolific amounts of evidence to the contrary.

And these mental case Alderpersons who are proposing all businesses post "No Gun" signs - how many of them are packing? Because they made themselves some version of a "Peace Officer"? Are they going to obey the law? As far as I understand, it means the off-duty Police can't carry in the location either - please correct me if I'm incorrect...

I'm not concerned if there's no detector at the entrance. As far as pulling it, to defend myself or my family.

I'm also wondering if a business puts up the gun free zone sign, if that also means that the owner/proprietor of that business is in violation. Kind of like having a handicap parking spot in your store parking lot doesn't mean that you can park in it.

Unless you were hired or specifically asked by the establishment to provide security or intervene, the establishment will in no way, shape or form assist you.

At least if you are an off-duty LEO and you are taking police action, you have your employer behind you.

A retired LEO you are totally naked legally. If you have any assets, you will be a target.

You CCW holders: think hard before getting involved. If you violate the signs, does that make your self-defense a crime?

The communists running Cook County do not want the citizens to defend themselves. The only reason Concealed Carry exists at all is because of the Federal Courts. There are going to be so many restrictions that most people will not bother as they will find it is not worth the hassle. The career criminal will get a free pass, you will get shafted 6 ways to Sunday.

For George Zimmerman to walk out of court cost $3M in legal bills Most of that will be paid by Floriduh. Illinois has no such provision.

One suburban American Legion post has those signs on the door. Since the organization is made of vets and their dependents it looks like that post has the liberal belief that Veterans are some how mentally challenged and should not have access to weapons. Also, I believe that the sticker also means that they can't store ceremonial weapons on property.
Why would a Veteran Organization put that up?
That's one post I will never go to again. Thankfully no other post I have been to has those stickers.

Yes, any business has the right under Illinois law to ban firearms carry within their establishment and that includes off duty and retired cops. But, there is no penalty under law for off duty and retired who do decide to carry within the business. They can be asked to leave, but that is the extent. They are not covered under the new Illinois Concealed carry laws. This thinking applies to sports stadiums ( Cubs are adding metal detectors this year).

If the owner of a business posts a no guns sign, it does not apply to the owner or employees, only to patrons. Read the new law. Sorry, but Jewel is not just like a federal property! P.O.'s off duty + retired can legally carry there, as the signs do not apply to us, only CCW "licensees", as stated in the statute. You are mistaken. Call IROCC and verify. Retired PO's with the IROCC card must follow the same laws etc. about CC as anyone else. You can test it out and post your results. Go into a place with the decal, reveal your CC status and wait for the on duty police. Sort of a test case.

What IROCC did is to codify CC for PO's retired in good standing, we now have standardized CC across all 50 states. If you think weapons laws do not apply to retired PO's, do what you want but the folks down at the IROCC office in Springfield told me differently.
