Off Duty Shooting

  • An off-duty police officer fatally shot an armed man in his 50s who was attempting to rob a Walgreens store Monday morning in the Jefferson Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said.

About 10:30 a.m., the suspect entered the Walgreens in the 5200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue and announced a robbery, according to a statement from Chicago police.

The officer had observed a "frantic" cashier stuffing money into a bag, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said. The officer's wife and kids were waiting in a car in the parking lot. Camden said the officer ordered the man, estimated at around 400 lbs., to kneel on the ground. After doing so, Camden said, the suspect told the officer he would not be taken into custody willingly, and the officer would have to shoot him. Camden said the suspect then reached for a gun in his pocket, and the officer shot him.
The former robber fits the description of a suspect who is wanted in a suburban pattern and may have held up the same Walgreens recently. Tipping the scales at 400 pounds, we can only hope that there aren't two of them running (rolling?) around the north side and 'burbs.

Very well done Officer.

This is another illustration of why concealed carry cannot be permitted! The officer was off duty and should not have been armed. Obviously, the deceased suspect had been profiled due to his obesity. The department should require everyone to undergo sensitivity training.

None of the above is true, but it represents worst rationalizing that is libtard thinking -- Well done, officer.

Great job! This type of incident makes me even more appalled that the general public bashes us so much and wants to take away every benefit we've earned. What would a civilian do in that situation? Probably piss his pants and hide and pray that the police show up. But this officer put his life at risk with no vest, no backup, no time to make a plan and he did what needed to be done. Now an armed felon will no longer terrorize good people. But keep bashing the police, people. Glad you're ok officer. You make us all proud.

I don't advocate playing police off duty (ie confronting the teens drinking in the alley etc) but when you walk into Walgreens and there is a guy with a gun are you going to be ready to take action or are you going to be a victim?

Off Topic: Why doesn't IDOT Buy American?
Could someone ask Gov. Quinn, why the Chicago Division of IDOT brought 20(twenty) forklifts from China. This was not for the whole state of Illinois, just a Chicago Division. I think that there are several companies that manufacture forklifts here in the United States of America.I think that several are right here in Illinois. Why does the State of Illinois buy products from China and not products made right here in the USA. If anyone knows a investigative reporter, pass this on to him/her. I don't know if the rest of the divisions of IDOT brought these Chinese forklifts, so it could be way more than 20.

But as is its the last class it's always heavy merit so definatly belivable so that means 21 off the list and 9 merit.. I feel bad for the guys 22-30 out but it happens.. That's the merit system for ya. Congrats to the 30 who will be made, especially the 21 who will be made by score. Not trying to start shit or rumors but this is officially the last class from the list. At last word 1900 exams are already graded from the new test which is about one and a half weeks ahead of schedule. Please post this information about the ISP Trooper that was seriously injured in the Tollway crash. This Trooper is also a high ranking enlisted member of the USN. Please support him and his family in anyway that you can!

Many of you saw on the news the horrible accident last Monday where an off-duty toll road employee was killed and an Illinois State Trooper was seriously injured. That Trooper was our very own Senior Chief (ITCS) Douglas Balder attached to the NCAGS unit. He remains in the Intensive Care Unit at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood and suffers serious injuries and severe burns to 20%-50% of his body. He has a wife and two young children and is good a friend to many of the Chicago sailors and we ask that you please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

If you would like to read the Chicago Tribune newspaper article regarding the incident please click this link HERE .

NCAGS Chicago is coordinating efforts to raise funds for his family because it is unclear how long his recovery and rehabilitations will take. The doctors are estimating he will be in the hospital another month or two and then he will have a very long rehabilitation period ahead of him. If you would like to make a donation to Senior Chief Balder's family please use this link https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=dennis.trejo1%40yahoo.com&lc=US&item_name=Balder%20Family&currency_code=USD&bn=PP-DonationsBF:btn_donateCC_LG.gif:NonHosted

NCAGS is also in the process of putting together fundraisers in the Chicago area.

Currently they have a photographer offering newborn and baby photography sessions for 20% off in February and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Balder Family. For information please check out www.tinyteaphotography.com or www.facebook.com/tinyteaphotography . They are also scheduling an all-you-can-eat buffet downtown in February at the Pazzo's restaurant as part of the fundraising efforts and more information will be available on this event in the coming weeks.

Please contact LCDR Deborah Weingart at d_weingart@hotmail.com / 224-217-8860 or EM2 Dennis Trejo dennis.trejo1@yahoo.com / 757-375-7572 for any questions or information on the upcoming fund raisers.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts, prayers and donations. They are greatly appreciated.

Interesting footnote from Webb Report (page 125) that shows that Masters Masters Masters was s stool pigeon for Daley:

Additionally, according to Biggane, e-mails like her January 18, 2011, e-mail to Kawada and
others (MAYOR_OFFICE000464) were sent to the Mayor’s Office every day. Biggane, Maureen, Kroll
Interview Rep. at 4-5 (Mar. 14, 2013). It was the “policy” under Masters to make the Mayor’s Office
aware of anything that might lead to questions from the press. Biggane, Maureen, Kroll Interview Rep. at
4-5 (Mar. 14, 2013). It was not unusual for the Mayor’s Office to be involved in FOIA response
discussions if the request might result in press attention. Hoyle, Jennifer, Kroll Interview Rep. at 3 (Jan.
18, 2013). In this instance, Biggane did not think it was inappropriate for CPD to be discussing the
Koschman reinvestigation with the Mayor’s Office because it was “protocol,” and because she was not
giving them “any details.” Biggane, Maureen, Kroll Interview Rep. at 7 (Mar. 14, 2013).

Nope. Two more classes of 30 is what McCarthy told the new sergeants and lieutenants classes when he spoke to them last week. So yeah, you are trying to start shit because you know someone who is 22-50 out who is sweating right now, and you're an ass who has nothing better to do than mess with this person. Just stop. It's obnoxious. I can only hope you find yourself in the 200s when the new list comes out and spend 8 years wondering if you'll make it as a new list is imminent.

Congrats to those that made it and to those that didn't hope you took the new test.. I have no doubt it's a shitty feeling especially if you were within 50 out..

@@@@@@@@@@@

I heard. Very disappointed I'm 53 out right now. I've made all the calls I can to confirm or debunk this but all calls I've made confirm this to be true. Crap

Great job office, in a split second decision do you allow this fat f@@k offender to walk outside the store, and 016 responding units arrival (shoot out) POs family is outside in the line of fire.. Hard situation to be put in, officer made a great decision, God Bless you and your family..

2/04/2014 08:47:00 AM

Police werent called during the robbery. If he walked out with the shortage of police in 016 it would take the first car on the scene 15 minutes and I'm sure no shootout. The guy that did the shooting was from 012, not 016

Thank you officer for putting yourself on the line to protect the innocent, especially with your family outside. God Bless You for your valor, bravery and going above and beyond.

A grateful city worker and citizen from Jefferson Park.

Glad the Officer is Ok. All that matters is that he goes home safely to his family.

I work with an Idiot who carries his gun in a bag(man purse) and places it in his trunk when he drives. He also leaves it there when he goes into restaurants, stores and other places. So if the shit hits the fan, he will have to run to his car to get his gun out of his trunk.

Always, always always carry it on you with an extra magazine.

As a resident of the neighborhood, I would like to say thank you to the officer. To show such bravery and heroism, especially considering he had his own family there to think about, is incredible. Words can not express the gratitude that is felt.

Heard an unfair labor practice complaint was filed against Dougherty and Aguilar for using fop email list for political gain. These guys just get better and better.

I heard that the Pension Board sent Dean Angelo a letter forcing him back to work because he works at Calumet College and is capable of returning to work.

There will be at least one more, very possibly two more smaller sergeant's classes from the old list. Also another smaller lieutenants class. Fact! Another fact is that over the past three years there were plenty of jealous, negative naysayers stating that the current list is done. And they were wrong each and every time.

Chicago is not on the top ten list of most dangerous U.S. cities.

Thats because they don't count our numbers in these polls because we dont use fbi recognized crime classifications. Theres a reason we refuse to comply!

Off topic.. One final class of sgts from the old list will start early march. Same size as this class which is 30. 30'percent (reportedly aka rumored) will be merit picks..

$$$$$$$$$

No dipshit. I was in the same class moron. Listening is a skill. He was speaking about our class of 30 and one more class to be made. THe class to be made next will be the final class.. It will be a class of 30 and that's the end of the list. Do I know anybody between 22-50... No, not off the top of my head. It would suck to be them. Start listening to what the supt of police says when he speaks to your class and don't give somebody false hope... Talk about obnoxious you know it all..

2/04/2014 10:43:00 AM
Maybe the same reason you by clothes, food, cars etc etc etc that were made in China or other foreign lands.Maybe because they are cheaper. I don't think this is a major story for an investigative reported to handle. Everything is not always a major conspiracy. And before you ask, no FOP will not say or do anything about either!!

And I heard(but of course have no facts to back it) that Rahm and gary are leaving. We are all getting 20% raises to our new contract which will be settled by next week, that our pensions are fully funded and in fact we will get paid more and allowed to retire at 40. and unicorns are walking through the streets and most importantly "Crime is down"

Nobody said it was a conspiracy. What it is is a rotten shame and the State of Illinois should be called upon to answer for it.

Let's start protecting American jobs. Then those American employees wlll earn wages and they will spend them (hopefully, on American made products)and they will pay taxes and they will buy houses and buy stuff to furnish them. And the American economy will benefit. Y'know, instead of the CHINESE economy.
