Detroit, much more than Chicago, has always "diverted" money from public safety for non-existant programs. Chicago is climbing to a close second.
Is their starting pay so low because of all the recent pay cuts they've been forced to take? If not, that's awfully low compared to illinois police salaries. Starting pay is usually in the high 50's.
They'll do a criminal background check, to see if you've been convicted of a felony.
Not having one disqualifies you automatically.

Leaving aside the jog satisfaction, and sense of accomplishment from working for a history PD, Think of the great opportunities for cultural fulfillment that Detroit offers. There are famous museums, great historic buildings, the opera, theater, and symphony. Some of the finest collages and universities in the nation, and a city that has only one way to go, UP. Did I mention friendly and appreciative citizens.

All the city of Detroit has to do is sell off the artifacts in the Detroit City Museum. The exhibits are worth about $10 Billion according to some estimates. The city could fully fund the current pension funds and have money left over for the current Democrat officials to steal.

Not to mention a municipal police force is not part of the "free market" you moron. It's not a private company run for profits. It's a fucking police department paid for by tax payer dollars as a necessary service to keep peace and order so that the free market and the people in it can actually function without total anarchy. Do you really want a bunch of police officers running around making $7.25 an hour and getting incentive bonuses for writing tickets?

Detroit is another corrupt shithole run by political thieves who have stolen so much money, they can't even afford to pay a damn janitor to clean the administrative offices. If you think the job offer at the police dep is a joke check out their fire dept- starting pay is 30k, a pension worth shit, and equipment that is literally being held together with duct tape. They have 80,000 vacant properties which are the bulk of their fire calls. 95% of those fires are arson. The city is so broke, they cannot afford to keep fire stations open, or fix fire engines, trucks, or replace broken gear the firemen wear. It has gotten so bad that the commissioner has ordered the firemen to let the vacant properties burn out without intervention, provided there are no occupants and it is not in close proximity to another structure. One of the biggest cities in the USA and it cannot afford the basics for its first responders. Chicago is well on its way to the fate of Detroit if the politicians continue to spend and steal the taxpayers money on frivolous bs projects like they did in Detroit.

What about the 2 to 1 the city was required to match. You cant just give back the money with a little interest
City wants not part of a matched 401k. If they did that they would have to match the 2 to 1 every payday or month and the city doesnt want to do that. If they did they would have been putting in the matching funds for the last 30 years.
