Crooked City Book Available

  • In this second collection of connected essays, Chicago cop Martin Preib takes on seemingly unrelated murder cases, all dating from one year, 1982, including some in which offenders were released as part of the wrongful conviction movement.
This book shatters reader assumptions—about the workings of justice, the objectivity of the media, and the role of the police in the city of Chicago, even calling into question allegations of police torture in the notorious cases against Jon Burge. Told in the gripping tension of a crime novel, Preib strives for the highest language as he wanders these brutal, controversial killings.
Available as a softcover book and for you new-fangled kids, Kindle. We linked to the preview of his upcoming book a month or two ago which calls into question everything you think you might have known about the Anthony Porter case along with all the dirty laundry from the so-called "Innocence Project."

I loved the first book & am looking forward to this new one... What an amazing writer. There are a million notes in the margins of my copy of The Wagon, highlighting his insights & my questions ... this is a guy who continues to search for meaning & purpose in life ... despite or maybe in light of The Job. keep up the good work Marty Preib, you are a hell of a great writer.

If this book is anything like that excerpt, this is going to make for a great read.

And hopefully, some justice.

Still waiting on that Zorn piece calling for justice for the innocent man now sitting in jail as a result of the morally misguided actions of that private investigator and his friends at NW.

As long as schlock low life lawyers can make a quick buck on these cases in Chicago it will never end. It's all about the $$$$.

Lt. Burge kept a lot of violent garbage off the streets of this town for many years. His reward was a jail cell.

Marty is a good writer. Thank God he took the time to expose this travesty of justice. I'm buying a copy.

Marty is assigned to a bean counting unit, so don't get too excited about what a hero he is.

He is a good writer though.

Is it true that the entire case against Burge was circumstantial evidence? That no real hard core existed against him? If that is true then I feel sorry for the officers in Chicago. In my book if it's a career criminal vs. a honest officer then I will take the officer's word any time of the day.

All the innocence project has done is put murderers and rapists back on the street and smeared good coppers.

It's been proven several times that the NU Prof and his students lied, fabricated statements, ignored facts, et al to prove their theories.

Dougherty is playing the scare card that Angelo will bring Shields back. Shields couldn't get elected dog catcher in Gary. Het Bill why would Dean bring him back? Thought so.

Just finished "Crooked City". Preib masterfully decapitates the Wrongful Conviction snake and lays bare how Northwestern University's "Innocence Project" magically swapped Alstory Simon for Anthony Porter.

Welcome to the New America.

Off topic. I know that we don't have good choices for FOP president. I just want to make it clear that Bill Dougherty was quoted saying this in Southtown Star newspaper dated February 6.
Starting last month, they were phased into the Affordable Care Act, Obamacare, to save the city money.

“I understand the city needs to save money and Obamacare may turn out to be a good option,” Dougherty said.

“But right now, we don’t know what the future of Obamacare will be. It could disappear in a couple of years and our retirees will be left without health insurance coverage."

I am voting for Dean Angelo. Bill is in bed with the democrats. Is really looking out for our best interests?

I'm almost done with the book. Very easy to read and follow as it unravels the complex history of the case and the politics behind the story.

It's amazing this is the only person who has pointed out holes in the "Wrongful Conviction" movement. Especially, after evidence surfaced in regards to David (I manipulate and lie for my own self agenda) Protess deleting and forging E-mails associated with this case.

And, where the hell has the FOP been this whole time. Why have they not embraced the same points that Preib has discovered. Oh... That's right.... The union has been too busy trying to retain their "spots", filing lawsuits against each other, and neglecting the membership that pay dues. Hey FOP... Someone call Preib.

Get job on the book. I recommend it to every Police Officer who has ever seen a case of misjustice at 26 and California.

I read his first book and was very impressed by his writing skills--very intellectually driven.

I see that Preib's new book is an illumination of recently discovered facts, revealing a culture created by the media and mixed in with the personal agendas from upscale university types.

Should be good.

Martin Preib is an accomplished novelist with a writing style that always keeps you engaged and leaves you wanting more. This important book has just proven him to be a great investigative journalist as well. Crooked City is an unpredictable, intriguing, relentless and disturbing journey into Chicago's darkest side of crime and murder, the criminal justice system that struggles to deal with it and some of the politics that sustain it at the highest levels of society. It leaves you breathless, intrigued and frustrated. Not only with the state of our justice/political system but the state of the mainstream media as well. The damage done to formally great institutions like the Chicago Tribune by characters like Sam Zell who put profit and 'infotainment' above good journalism is just another disappointing example. Eric Zorn should take lessons from Martin Preib to see how a real journalist actually contributes to the public discourse.

Well all you idiots voted for the fucking RETIREES so you better get ready to deal with more of this, lost of them retirees like duck horn, Trevino, Shogren, Hauser have been out of touch for years and have NO fucking a CLUE what the evolution of the department and state attorneys office is like. I'm interested in what Preib has to say.

What baffles me about this subject is the way the department, the union, and the people who we swore to defend are all so silent about these cases.

Most are complete BS, we all know this, and frankly, a wrongfully convicted guy should get out and be compensated -- nothing wrong with that.

But to portray every single case as police and prosecutorial misconduct is an insult to a lot of very good working policeman and attorneys.

Very sad that its come to this.

If I could find the right words to describe how pissed off I am with the election results and now u scum bags want us to participate in a run off election. Well listen up assholes why the fuck would I want too. I'm telling u right now if any of you guys come out to the districts Bill or Dean and try and convince any of the Black officers to vote for either of you it just might be shots fired. The only reason we black officers gave a fuck is because Tom , BK, Bella, and that female officer convinced a lot of Blacks that their ticket was going to be a ticket of transparency and inclusion for every officer. Damn I was buying that shit cuz those guys really made sense. Now as a Black officer It would have been nice to just see a variety of officers being represented in the hall. Look at the people who won a seat all white males & 1 white female I think thats a chick . For Real Though Not one Black won . Please I don't want to hear that bullshit about they didn't run because they did. The problem is the retirees out numbered the working black cop. So sad to see our department is still so divided and that the retirees seem to want it that way. Hey Team Dean and City Wide we are only asking one of you guys throw us a bone. All I got to say is If I have too I will bring this shit up every chance I get before I retire. some shit has to change in FOP. Dean Bill yaw better start appointing some blacks to something. I'm out like yesterday.

"Innocence Project"- HA! What a joke! Paying girls to get cons to say anything to get a, er- payout, yes- that's the word. Here's something the public, nor many judges, have the ability to understand. Just because there is no DNA evidence recovered at the scene, doesn't mean that the offender didn't commit the crime. It just means that, well, no DNA evidence was recovered at the scene. It should not automatically clear the offender if he did it.
