Info for the Readers of SCC

You think that you have freedom of thought and expression off-duty in the privacy of your own home? According to this e-mail we got, maybe not:
  • Some angry bosses were talking about some joint effort to track down ip addresses of anonymous posts and go after those who posted. They are paying someone to do this somehow?

  • Apparently there is some kind of joint service they are looking into but each person that wants info will have to pay individually if they want specifics. Just think of some of the more egocentric and vindictive commanders and above on this job. Some of these thin skins love to claim "I don't read the blog" but are actually obsessed with it.
So certain members of the Command staff are thinking about paying a service to track down those who bad-mouth them on the blog. Although technically feasible, we're unsure as to the ramifications. We imagine they want to try some sort of defamation suit, but as most of the exempts are semi-public figures, employed and identified by the City online, in press releases and in photo-ops with the Supernintendo and other figures, it'd be a long road.

Hmmm Law enforcement looking up Ip adresses without a warrant or probable cause.

You can call them exempts but they still work for the city.

ANd yes those houses they live in can also be lost in a lawsuit.

You don't think J-fled researched this back in the day???

You don't think Gary asked corp council about this type of info gathering.

So feel free to locate my ip for a civil matter.

Wouldn't that violate the Department's and the City of Chicago's First Amendment Rights, orders, ordinance, decree, etc..

WARNING: To anyone who might engage in this sort of spying.

You, unlike the NSA don't have the unlimited firewall and resources of the Obama Dictatorship to protect you.

When found out this cost you everything you ever worked for.

Remember what a very smart Boss once said. A Boss can order you into a dark alley or up a stairs knowing that it is likely you will be killed.

WHAT HE CANNOT DO: is order you to do anything that will jeopardize your job or your freedom which this spying certainly would.

Also warning everyone, do not use Department/City equipment, resources or time to send or receive any of any blog, even using an "anonymizer".

LOL! You want to take a blog post about your shortcomings and put it on the front page of every newspaper in America? Pulling some cowardly, weak stunt like that is a sure-fire way to do so.

And with all the attention to privacy rights in recent months, you best do so in a completely above board, 100% ethical and 100% legal fashion subject to strict media scrutiny.

Good luck proving who actually authored and submitted posts IF you're successful in tracking down IP addresses. My PC is available to at least a dozen people during the course of any given day and it's not unusual for me to leave my smart phone unlocked and unattended for hours at a time.

And then good luck proving harm for what you claim as libel. Which one of your unearned "merit" promotions - complete with that hefty salary increase - during the timeframe you claim to be a victim was the most damaging to your reputation amongst your peers and most effected your career, your ability to "earn" a living? Which one of your "major life activities" was stifled because someone lobbed some well-earned insults at you in cyberspace?

I'll bet your thousands of MySpace photos will tell a different story altogether. You look quite happy on the boat at your summer place. Drinking beers in that hot tub on your ski trip to Aspen looked like a lot of fun. You look happy as a clam in all those pictures! Don't forget all that stuff is also retrievable forever. As are your emails and text messages conspiring with other supervisors to fuck with subordinates you suspect as culprits.

Most of you assholes thought - and still think - nothing of fucking with and stepping all over subordinates along your climb up the ladder of rank. The majority of you gold stars used ways and means to make that rank anyone with an ounce of dignity or self respect wouldn't dream of doing. And now you want to cry foul because someone hurt your feelings on the "insignificant blog"? It's no wonder this department is in shambles. Grown men and women who can't take an insult or constructive criticism. Adults who can't seem to figure out that the more you show that something bothers you, the more people are going to attack that weakness.

Newsflash!! You thin-skinned crybabies aren't untouchable. It's actually quite easy to catch you on video somewhere doing something you're not supposed to be doing. You know, like dropping your kids off at school in the city vehicle. Or shopping on your days off in the company car. Or at dinner with the significant other, maybe throwing back a drink or two while you're still supposed to be at work. You get the idea. It's even easier to start at the district level; there are more than enough disgruntled blue shirts that wouldn't mind jackpotting some of their immediate supervisors which would bring more than enough heat to make the accountable gold stars above them uncomfortable. Everyone can be "got" one way or another.

Anyway, I don't see this as anything more than a few pussies that got their feathers ruffled and panties bunched shaking the trees because their collective inept asses have been exposed as frauds. A kneejerk witchhunt. A reactionary fishing expedition. A bluff to scare folks into playing nice.

    Happy hunting, losers.

Computerworld - Russia has moved to block citizens from accessing online information about the Ukrainian political movement that ousted the country's pro-Russian president last week.

However, said one analyst, only 13 web sites - a tiny smattering of outlets with information on the movement - have been blocked..

"Yeah, 13 will take care of it," said Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group sarcastically. "No problem now."

On Monday, Roskomnadzor, the Russian agency that monitors communications, media and information technology, issued an online statement that Russia's prosecutor general instructed it to restrict access to 13 web sites.

The blocked sites, said the agency, which were not specified, are making direct appeals to Russians to "carry out terrorist activities" and "participate in unsanctioned public events."

The truth tellers on SCC fuck up the party line propaganda, spin and message control out of 111 N. LaSalle and 3510 S. Michigan.

They want so badly to break the backs of Policemen and silence the unceasing though very much justified criticism to the point of saying Policemen solely by their employment, have to right to speak freely of their working conditions and exposing the political chicanery that has exposed the upright citizens of this city to unnecessary and eminently avoidable danger due to the political and media apparatus' demonstrated inability to do what is right, honorable and equitable.

The Civil War against The Police, the upright taxpayers and their mutual concerns continues.

"The Police ARE the problem in Chicago... Once we fix THEM, everything else will fall in place."

we're all covered by this case

New York Times Co. v. Sullivan

    No. 39
SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES

    376 U.S. 254

    Argued January 6, 1964

Respondent, an elected official in Montgomery, Alabama, brought suit in a state court alleging that he had been libeled by an advertisement in corporate petitioner's newspaper, the text of which appeared over the names of the four individual petitioners and many others. The advertisement included statements, some of which were false, about police action allegedly directed against students who participated in a civil rights demonstration and against a leader of the civil rights movement; respondent claimed the statements referred to him because his duties included supervision of the police department. The trial judge instructed the jury that such statements were "libelous per se," legal injury being implied without proof of actual damages, and that, for the purpose of compensatory damages, malice was presumed, so that such damages could be awarded against petitioners if the statements were found to have been published by them and to have related to respondent. As to punitive damages, the judge instructed that mere negligence was not evidence of actual malice, and would not justify an award of punitive damages; he refused to instruct that actual intent to harm or recklessness had to be found before punitive damages could be awarded, or that a verdict for respondent should differentiate between compensatory and punitive damages. The jury found for respondent, and the State Supreme Court affirmed.

Held: A State cannot, under the First and Fourteenth Amendments, award damages to a public official for defamatory falsehood relating to his official conduct unless he proves "actual malice"--that the statement was made with knowledge of its falsity or with reckless disregard of whether it was true or false

If the bosses find out who the person is posting and try to discipline them somehow, the poster will then have to prove if his information is true. If the information is true, then the bosses wil have egg on their faces, have to answer for what's going on, and the media will have a field day blasting it out to the public.

I'm not a police officer and never have been -- what I am is a network security engineer. For those of you who wish to preserve your anonymity when posting comments here, here's how.

First, choose "anonymous" as your identity. I'm sure you've figured that out. Never post with an account -- it's pretty easy for me (much less an attorney with subpoenas at his disposal) to trace an account back to a person.

Second, post from an IP address that isn't associated with you. If there's a court order (more commonly associated with a civil defamation case than any criminal matter), Blogger may very well have to disclose the IP address that a particular comment was made from. If that IP address belonged to your home, work, or mobile Internet connection, your Internet provider will be forced to disclose the connection between the IP address and the subscriber.

So you should post from someplace that has free Wifi. When you do, make sure that if you buy anything from the location that you pay cash. If it's the library don't borrow or return any materials the day that you use the Wifi. If it's a cafe or store don't use a customer loyalty card. Don't leave any possible paper trail to connect you to the location on the day you use the Internet to post.

Criminal investigators, particularly Feds, have far more power to track people down than exists in a civil case. These simple steps will give you a lot of protection from insecure bosses but aren't enough to help you much if you're committing crimes.

    IP Addresses - continued

Email: Email is easier to trace. Although you can embed misinformation into the header the email servers will dutifully add everything about where it came from and every stop it took along the way.

Word, Excel, Powerpoint documents insert all sorts of info about you, your computer (including serial #), and network into hidden metadata in the document. That is how they caught the BTK killer.

Digital Camera and cell phone pictures: Again, all sorts of metadata info. Sometimes GPS location, camera serial number, even what shutter speed.

    Ain't technology wonderful?

    What about this new proposal?

f you’re a firearms enthusiast in Illinois right now, you may want to pay special attention to a new proposal submitted last month by State Representative Kelly Cassidy (D). The proposal, HB4715, is referred to in its text as the “Firearms Registration Act.”

If this law were to go into effect, only those with registered firearms could purchase ammunition. Those who have legally registered firearms would be allowed only to purchase the types of ammunition deemed suitable for their specific registered guns.

I would love to see the flurry of lawsuits McBeergut and Rhammie the Commie would have to contend with. Hope the city has a few million dollars laying around to pay out in settlements...

Let's see there, Sparky. We have a communist president in the White House who appointed mostly communists as Czars. He uses the NSA to spy on Americans and the IRS to target political opponents.

Chicago is the home of the communist movement in this country with the likes of Bill Ayers and his whore communist subversive wife brainwashing the young college minds to swing communist.

Most will still vote for the Democrats even though they now know that they are just socialists calling themselves democrats. So you tell me, are we in the same country you grew up in?

Someone once gave an interview to a major metropolitan newspaper, and I posted a quote from it on a web log. YEARS later, webmaster gets a huffed-up, ominous message asking for it to be taken down.

    His answer?

    "No."

    A list is at:

You computers "at work" or "on a govt system/network" are logged automatically. So don't post from work or even read from work.

ANd yes those houses they live in can also be lost in a lawsuit.

Did you happen to catch 60 Minutes yesterday? If not, you can watch it online. It will explain to you how many thousands of companies and 'data mining' entities track your every keystroke online.
It isn't illegal to gather your ip address and associate it with your true identity.
What would be illegal is using that information to intimidate or retaliate against you in the course of your employment.

I have a relative who works in the Emmanuel administration. There is a term circulating around City Hall concerning the police department. It's "Dead Weight."

The city has been auditing activity of the CPD officers and comparing the activity to the surrounding suburbs and, of course, New York. The numbers are not good. CPD officers average substantially less tickets, arrests, contact cards, and other citations than every other department they have been compared to. The total salary including benefits, pension, and OT is higher than every other department in this study.

One solution, which may include the blog PIN addresses, is to fire anyone for cause that they can and simply deal with the legal fallout by publicly shaming the Police Board and the local judges into supporting the effort. What they want to do is secure an evaluation standard that they can use to fire officers who are not performing.

The bottom line is that the city wants to dramatically reduce police costs. They believe they can have a much smaller department that is more effective than the one they have now.

A VPN service will first connect you to one of their servers and then direct you to your desire site (e.g. SCC). Then SCC will see the VPN IP address and not yours.

A popular and relatively cheap provider is: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/buy-vpn/

It is $6.95 if you want to try it for a month. Or $40/year. It sometimes goes on sale. It will download a small piece of software that will take care of setting up the VPN. You can turn it on or off as needed. You can use a creditcard, paypal, bitcoin or a prepaid visa card from walgreens to pay for it. There are many other providers as well. Just Google "vpn providers".

There are a few free providers that are good if you just want to read a website, but to post it needs to be able to handle java or other programming that is not available on most free services.

Read the rule and regs. You cannot bring discredit to the department or insubordinate. Remember 1st am does not apply to us.

    ------------------

Read these words: The department and bosses discredit themselves. Here it is just discussed. Sharing of information and venting is not discrediting or insubordination. Here we talk about how pissed we are about politicians and bosses bringing discredit to our profession. Insubordination is not following orders. Ok... maybe telling a boss to suck it on here could cross a line by a toe, but you gonna spend money and time find an ip address, which if not blocked, you find po so an so whose "didnt post this." Shit, in a hit and run accident and owner of other car is is found later and says he wasnt driving, that's that. Why not with a computer?

I have a relative who works in the Emmanuel administration. There is a term circulating around City Hall concerning the police department. It's "Dead Weight."
The bottom line is that the city wants to dramatically reduce police costs. They believe they can have a much smaller department that is more effective than the one they have now.

    /////////////////////////////////////////////

You bet your ass there's a hell of a lot dead weight on this department, but it is not in patrol. Start looking at all these exempt rank bosses who earn 6 figures to do absolutely nothing. Eliminate all these redundant command positions- how many chiefs do you need especially when your total number of sworn officers has been declining. There are many exempt rank members who make their own hours, come and go as they please, working 3 or 4 hours then leaving for the day. Yet these same "bosses" will throw tantrums if they see a patrolman checking off 10min early. They are the same ones who micromanage everything and focus on the irrelevant minor issues in a futile attempt to justify their existence and ridiculous salary. Start from the top if you want to get rid of that dead weight- including the puppet figure head earning 300k for media relations that manipulates stats and sits on command for an incompetent mayor.

    BS.

That GO would get 99% of all exempts Fired if we had a Super and a Mayor with Stones. UN-enforceable for the purposes of commenting on this "insignificant little blog."

while I don't like being censored, the fact is that we all agreed to certain standards of conduct, many of which are routinely ignored or overlooked when convenient. as far as what gets said on here or other social media, a prudent person would make themselves familiar with rules 31 and 32.

That said, should the department or a boss be so thin skinned as to start an investigation, looking for IP addresses and such? I would say that the department and the city have bigger fish to fry.

    +1

If the rules and regulations were jammed up the exempts asses as hard as the po's, every exempt would be walking with a limp.

Can't remember which bosshole once said that rules and regs are just mere suggestions for the Gold Stars but life and death for everybody else...

They want to see coppers hang so badly for exposing the rot in the CPD upper echelon then they fucking better hang some exempts from the same scaffold at the same time.

    Viva Hate...

What's sad is Dart already did this to the two guys who had up blogs airing out the dirty laundry of the sheriffs office. Tracted them down thru their IP address and threatened them all kinds of ways regarding their job and safety. He had the blogs shut down. I believe law suits are pending because of this. Freedom of speech is truly being threatened.

One, a Deputy Court Sergeant was demoted!!
