Aldercreature Leadfoot Complains

If you're doing something wrong, wouldn't it make more sense to .... just stop doing the wrong thing? Not if you're an aldercreature:
  • A South Side alderman who got two warning notices recently after speeding around schools and parks is demanding that City Hall put up more and better signs to alert motorists to slow down.

Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) introduced a resolution at this week’s City Council meeting co-signed by a dozen colleagues.
Signs alerting motorists to an upcoming speed camera are "similar to existing speed limit signs," the resolution states.

By contrast, signs warning motorists approaching a red-light camera are “uniquely designed with a traffic signal illustration," according to the resolution.

The resolution demands that the Chicago Department of Transportation install “clear distinctive signs and/or striping that indicates that a motorist is approaching a school or park safety zone.”
That would kind of defeat the purpose of the cameras Leslie. They are there to generate money, not promote safety. And see how Leslie explains away her misbehavior:
  • “If I’m driving in an unfamiliar neighborhood, then I’m entitled to notice to be able to comply with the law to be a safe driver in a school zone by reducing my speed. It is not fair for a driver not to have a posted sign allowing them to adjust their speed.
She's entitled. And the signs will warn her that she's got to be safe because there are cameras around, meaning that if she doesn't see the signs or cameras, she can drive like an asshole?

The logical disconnect here is pretty typical of Chicago political hacks.

Some people are more equal and more important than the common herd. Also due to their VIP status, some people should be exempted from many common rules and regulations and speed limits. Now if the Alderperson was doing 100mph this is one thing. Doing 45-50 mph should get an exemption. She is important and so is her time. In addition the speed cameras were never intended to raise money from alderpersons.

Aldermen or women can do what they want. I needs a sign to tell me not to speed. I love the speed cameras, I always said, you can bitch at a police officer for giving you a ticket, BUT, you can only bitch at yourself if you get a speeding ticket from a camera. Its just freaking great, I needs a sign to tell me not to speed. LMFAO

Much as I hate to admit it, Ald. Hairston is correct on this issue…most of these speed cameras in "school and park areas" are nothing more than a money trap. The vast majority of their locations, even if posted in newspapers, when you're driving past them are top secret. These speed camera locations should have signage that are similar to those in red-light camera areas, and they aren't. I know in my travels throughout he city I see the speed cameras snapping away, with most motorists oblivious that they are being photo'd.

Cameras or no cameras... signs or warnings... Law is the law and one sign is sufficient. If understanding a single sign is difficult for a politician they should be tied to the sign and forced to memorize it. What a bunch of idiots.

The cameras are placed on poles in the middle of the block and the
sign is across the street opposite
the camera and this by design so
you will speed on your merry way and drop your money in the mayor's pocket. The posted speed limit is
30 mph so it won't hurt to slow down
to 25 mph and if the other drivers
elect to go around you that's their
problem.

Just sayin' that your suppose to know how fast to go as described in the ROTR book.

I mean, most side streets do not have posted signs but that does not mean you can go 80 because "there were no signs.... how am I suppose to know how fast I gotta' go?"

Easy solution..........PAY ATTENTION!

Comon! Bitching that the speed camera signs don't "stand out" is a cop out. Most people drive the same route everyday and they know what to expect. If you are driving in an unknown area, then just do the limit. How hard can that be?

Besides, at least the cameras are always in the same spot, unlike a marked car.

The camera will only get you for speeding. The copper will not only write you for speeding, but any other violation they find. Gotta have that activity for VRI!

Not to defend this goof, but theres a point here. An example would be the cameras on 111th east of Pulaski, near the Ag school and Mt. Greenwood Park. The speed limit west of Pulaski is higher that it is east of Pulaski, so you have to hit the brakes so the camera doesn't get you. Little if any signage makes it a naked speed trap. Money grab only.

Everyone should slow down around schools, but the city knows that signs work against the REAL goal...making money.

i thought the aldermen were in the same class as city workers such as cta employees and don't have to pay traffic cam fines.

pretty sure the mayor doesn't mind the inflated number of tickets issued as tho the traffic cams are making things safer.

it's makes for good hollywood-like p.r. yeah

would you look at all these tickets we printed. no-no, don't look at how many are paid or the clouted ones that get a 'professional courtesy'

you should be aware.

at currie h.s. we have east bound traffic on archer cutting over to 51st to avoid the speed trap cams and the red light cam on pulaski.

during rush hour, when the children are present, many of these drivers are nearly running down pedestrians that have the right-of-way to cross the street -- in their mass rush to make their right hand on red turn.

this location is right at the cta orange line stop it gets busy. someone is going to get hurt because of this eff'd up traffic engineering and lack of enforcement.

save the children mayor. won't someone save the children.

maybe the city should have an audible warning specifically for aldermen.

ya know...a bullhorn announcing 'attention chicago aldermen...we see you..

perhaps stronger words of warning could be broadcast depending on the speed that they are traveling too.

'hey mo-fo, slow the f'k down there are kids out here jackass.'

we have the technology.

of course why should we limit this reckless behavior monitoring to just parks and school zones. put a gps tracking system in their cars and a camera.

hey.. if they're not doing anything wrong what's there to worry about.

I always thought the signage was interesting. Believe it or not, I also thought only Chicago got the red light camera signs correct. Suburbs warn you about red light cameras with white signs which is a regulatory color. E.G.: things you should or shouldn't do. ONE WAY, SPEED LIMIT, etc. Chicago uses the yellow/black signs to warn you there is a stop light ahead - just like they should, and then put a little sign under it stating 'photo enforced' This is a correct use of a warning sign.

Kind of like yellow ramp speed signs, its a warning (suggested speed, notice it doesn't say speed limit)- not regulatory. So, the 'speed trap' signs are correct - regulatory - this is the speed limit, and we will enforce it at this speed.

Now, the number of signs along a particular section of street may be a problem. For instance, drive down Division thru Little Puerto Rico. Photo red light signs, photo speed signs, pedestrian crossing signs, speed limit signs, snow signs, parking meter signs, stop signs, one way signs, This stretch certainly has an overabundance of signs - I'm sure there are many other areas as well. Thats a problem, I'm not watching for pedestrians or cars if I'm trying to read all 50 signs on one block to make sure I'm not going to get a ticket sent to me.

Now if Mayor Rahm was really concerned about safety he could put speed bumps adjacent the cameras. Or do like I have seen in other munis. Put orange flags up to draw attention to the camera. A speed bump will physically slow you down but a camera is only a deterrent after the fact.

My answer to potholes and cameras in the City of Chicago is simple, i have simply reduced the business I do in the City of Chicago. In the suburbs the taxes are cheaper, the roads are better and I can park. Just for the reord I am not a fan of hers. I also think that she is being silly about the signage. Regardless if its a camera or not she was still speeding. But Ald Hairston is part of the block that usually votes against the mayor.
Per the Tribune:
The 33-14 vote came after the mayor made changes to the camera plan in an effort to build support among aldermen leery of backing a package that some of their constituents view as a cash grab by the city.

(Voting no were: Alds. Arena, Cappleman, Pawar, Osterman, Fioretti, Dowell, Burns, HAIRSTON, Sawyer, Jackson, Chandler, Waguespack, Sposato, and Reilly. Absent were Alds. Maldonado, Reboyras, Graham. The other 33 aldermen voted )
