Lake Rescue

  • A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after being pulled from Lake Michigan near the Adler Planetarium early this morning.

Police said the man had apparently been walking on the ice when he slipped and fell through about 2:40 a.m. in the 800 block of East Solidarity Drive.

A friend who was with him called 911 and reached down from an ice-covered ledge to hold his friend in place, according to police.

When two officers from the Chicago Police Department's Marine Unit arrived, they lay down one in front of the other, forming a human chain with the man's friend, police said.

McLush was just heard saying, "Marine Unit? We have a Marine Unit? I can put them in beat cars in 019 to placate those whining complaining victims, er, um, taxpayers who have been screaming they are down 112 police officers since I conned them into letting me combine 019/023 district."

"Or maybe I have a box they can march around in over in Englewood, more boots on the ground, that's it! Father Pfleger will love me!"

Maureen Faulkner, widow of Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner, is begging senators to vote against the nomination of Debo Adegbile to head to Civil Rights Division inside the Department of Justice. Adegbile is a supporter and advocate for convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal, who brutally murdered Daniel Faulkner in 1981 during an early morning traffic stop. Under Adegbile's leadership at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, attorneys expressed what an "honor" it was to represent Abu-Jamal in court and that the case was taken up based on race.

OT--

Desperate radio reports from Mel Reynolds in Sough Africa. I guess ZImbabwe wouldn't go full boat on first-class, drinks, dinner, in-flight movies home, but just drove him to the border in a crappy old prison van with no springs and then kicked him out.

Now he claims that he's "in hiding" in SA "because of death squads" after him." "I was trying to expose the crooked business dealings of Zimbabwe, conducted by their cruel dictator, Robert Mugabe."

The actual story is that he was over there with billionaire Obama supporter Elzie Higginbottom, trying to get American investment in diamond fields -- and that he praised Mugabe, embarassing the entire delegation.

...and all of a sudden it's like no one knows him...

Time to knock a shine box together and get busy in the town square, squatting in the dust among the scurrying chickens and goats...

Have a nice life, Mel...

CNN is playing a series this week called CHICAGOLAND produced by Robert Redford. This is part of Rahms push for a National Stage and name recognition. In this series Rahm uses the suffering and hard work of others to highlight HIS leadership and it is cut and painted to fit HIS agenda. The project is pure RHAMOGANDA. In addition the carefully crafted appearances with Jimmy Fallon and the lie to the New York media that the police were slow to adapt and actually CAUSED the violent spike in crime is right out of Pravdas play book. He is the closest thing to the Devil I have ever seen.

Please. Did you see the film of the Great Plunge? They used backhoes and cleared a path through the ice right to the beach sand, little pool there, and there were at least three big guys in full red dry suits -- USCG? CPD Marine? Fire? -- standing RIGHT THERE. I mean RIGHT THERE. People flopped down in the foot-deep water and there were already pros helping them back up within seconds.

More like a baptism than anything else. Didn't see the Mayor go in at all, just saw him running back along the beach in this weird-looking outfit, into what seemed to be a special area marked by a City of Chicago flag stuck in the sand -- refusing an unofficial towel offered by someone along the way. Private cabana there for him to shinny out of the neoprene rig under all that goofy stuff?

What a joke.

I've been through two fires in high rises. I was on the 18th floor. Fire Dept says stay in your unit with door closed and wet towels used to seal the door from the smoke. Only leave if the fire apartment is yours or right next door. In any case, rarely should you leave your apartment on your own.

I ended up buying a fire dept type respirator and one hour oxygen bottle to keep in the closet. Never needed it but it gave peace of mind.

The worst place to be is the stairs with the panicked people leaving. The stairs are not meant to evacuate the entire building at once, just a floor or two at a time. The fire dept. says let them decide on evacuation or not.

"I ended up buying a fire dept type respirator and one hour oxygen bottle to keep in the closet. Never needed it but it gave peace of mind."

Good thinking. It's probably "breathing air" rather than "oxygen," though.

Some people have suggested scuba gear but dive shops won't fill an air tank for you unless you can show diver certification card. Don't try your home compressor; not enough pressure and they use special design OIL-LESS compressors for breathing air so as not to ruin your lungs.

Scott and similar air packs are used in industry, too, and an industrial safety supply should be able to fix you up.

I remember when the Fire Department decided to allow the use of the word "panic" over the radio in these things. Electrical transformer went up in basement of 20-story 1100 N. LaSalle -- ho boy. Older building with not the latest doors, and that awful smoke spread up through the place...

Breathing air, right. An MSA tank and respirator. I was still on the job then and I had it filled at the CFD station where they filled their own tanks. I tested it every so often. Good thing to have in a high rise. I bought it second hand from the same company the CFD get's their stuff from. From Morton Grove I think or some suburb with a reasonable replacement schedule. That would not be Chicago. That high rise was 31 floors and only had hardware store smoke detectors. Built in 1969 it was grandfathered in under old rules.
