Crime Down, But Homicides Up

Do the media morons even read what they write? Channel 7 posts this yesterday:
  • Chicago Police say crime in the city is down again.

The Police Department says murders were down 25 percent last month.

Shooting incidents were down 38 percent.

Crime overall declined 28 percent compared to February 2013.
That's it, they cite nothing, just percentages probably spoon-fed to them by Media Affairs.

The Slum-Times has this:
  • Chicago finished February with 20 murders — tied for the fourth lowest total for the month since 1957, police said.
Fourth lowest? That's great. Only then they bury this a few paragraphs down:
  • Overall, murders were up from February 2013, when the city recorded only 13 killings — the fewest of any month on record, police said.
So....that's an increase, right? Every other time the Department releases stats, they compare "...this time last year..." or "the same month the previous year," but now with something like a 65% jump during the 4th snowiest and 3rd coldest winter on record, they've decided to feed the goofs at Channel 7 some percentages and ABC doesn't even bother to look behind the curtain.

So what happens when it warms up?

Lets face it Chicago is a dangerous place to live. It could be worse though. What if you had lax gun laws, gun stores on every corner and a hundred thousand people running around carrying concealed, like say Texas? Down there they don't just own a gun, they own arsenals.

"So what happens when the weather warms up?"

Answer: Crime is still down compared to 1947's stats. Good job Gary.

It would seem that Garry loves those 50+ y-o-y comparisons. If he goes back another 50 or 100 years it may look even better.

February Finals:
Shot & wounded: 54
Total homicides: 22 (inc 2 PO-involved)

Less than 36 hours into March and it's really kickin' it thus far:
Shot & wounded: 4
Total homicides: 5

Hearing these numbers and percentages being used reminds me of a toy I had as a kid.

Remember the Magic 8-ball? You could ask it any question, shake it, and the answer that appeared in the window was very vague and general. However, it fit the question you asked.

It seems to me that what's needed is a report on crime that always follows the same crime reporting template, always reports these statistics straight, and has wide distribution among the people of Chicago, especially the voters.

I'd like to make that but I have no idea how to go about getting those numbers in a way I can pour them into such a template. For me, the template seems to be pretty easy. Where to get the numbers is more of a mystery.

How many crimes are reclassified to adjust the numbers? Home invasions turned into burglaries? Burglaries turned into thefts from buildings? Remember years back a homicide turned into an accidental discharge. Just downgrade everything, all is well.

I also like how the medical examiners office has 45 homicides committed in Chicago, to our 40. Understandably so 2 were police involved shootings. But the other 3 thats the real question.

Increase for the month of February but down overall for the year.. Scc, I don't like compstat, I hate the bigmouth GMAC and what this dept has become.. But you have beat the whole shooting/homicides thing to death. We al get it they play games in the media but it comes off as you pouting and stamping your feet because homicides are down for the year but when they are up in fen you start yelling and screaming that they are really up... Listen, homicides are down for the year, crime is also down. Numbers or stats or whatever they are it still all just equals crime is down. I'm getting tired of reading your articles because thy are getting crybabyish... You can sometimes try to report things fairly.. Just because you are fair doesn't mean you support the dept and GMAC, it just makes you look like an adult and professional. This just makes you look childish and mad that crime is down and you can't handle it... Relax. The summer will give you plenty of stories when the homicides will over run last years numbers.. Patience young grasshoppa, the time to bash and gloat about the numbers will come this summer..

The weather anyone could figure it out is the big factor! Not all the vri or bullshit policing strategies!

On another note looks like garfield ridge is getting revitalized, zalewski,Burke,Quinn and the mighty mike madigan involved! Property values are increasing here, more taxpayers moving in, on my block we had 2 homes for sale both sold in 2 weeks 1 family moved from Bridgeport (they said area getting bad), other from Plainfield, now let's get more police patrols.

http://swnewsherald.com/plans-offered-to-attract-business-for-archer-avenue-p4621-1.htm

Went to credit union recently to get a car loan, talking to loan officer there was told they had 20 home closings in 2 days all coppers moving into the area, some ppo some vets. Maybe just maybe this could be the ground floor of property values here, if archer starts to shape up something like downtown Lagrange area, could you imagine the tax revenue generated.

What other area has with 1 1/2 mile 4 public grade schools, public high school, 3 Christian grade schools, 5 parks, quick access to I-55 great bus service fire to orange line train, metro train in summit with $1.00 per day parking direct to downtown? 4 grocery stores,4 walgreens, etc. businesses don't make investments unless they feel the area is stable. Property taxes are not bad I have a 2400 sq ft home regular city lot $3500 year, plus when people move out to the suburbs you also have section 8', pay 3/5x more for water, pay for every bag of garbage double the taxes!

Police form human chain to hoist man from Lake Michigan

8:26 a.m. CST, March 2, 2014

"A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after being pulled from Lake Michigan near the Adler Planetarium early this morning.

"Police said the man had apparently been walking on the ice when he slipped and fell through about 2:40 a.m. in the 800 block of East Solidarity Drive.

"A friend who was with him called 911 and reached down from an ice-covered ledge to hold his friend in place..."

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-police-form-human-chain-to-hoist-man-from-lake-michigan-20140302,0,2371837.story

...and the friend is damned lucky he didn't slip...

Middle of the night, darkness, thick snow so no one can see you, wind to blow away your shouts for help...if there had not been someone with him...someone walking their dog on the beach would have found him in the springtime, over by Muskegon.

Can't say specifically about this case, don't know, but in general there is a magnetic attraction between drunks and bodies of water. Ice seems to just make it even more fascinating out there...

McCarthy also promised that the manpower of the new combined district would not go down at all after the merge.

3/02/2014 01:17:00 AM

You ain't gonna like the answer. Read on:

Per the rules governing deferred compensation, the city has up to 30 days to transfer funds to Nationwide Retirement Solutions.

So not only is your cash being applied to your chosen fund(s) late - which potentially means you're LOSING MONEY - Rahm/the City is making interest on every last cent of yours that they hold onto, the longer the better.

Playing devils advocate, the possibility exists that one might actually benefit from their Def Comp money hitting the market when the city deposits it with NRS (funds may be applied on a day that stocks/shares are low and appreciate from there). Regardless, it's misleading to think you're buying into the market on the 1st & 16th when funds are deducted from your paychecks, and I can say with 100% certainty the Def Comp representative that enrolled me way back when never mentioned this fact. As always, the only sure winner in this equation is the city of Chicago.

In this day and age of technology, there is absolutley no reason why funds can't be electronically transferred the second the clock hits a second after midnight on a predetermined day. Shit, they're able to wire funds early for those of use direct deposit.

Let your coworkers know about this little known fact. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to learn of how they're being fucked by the city - again.

John Rogers is also the ex-husband of former White House idiot Desiree Rogers. (since fired)

He went to New Trier High School when the family lived in Wilmette. Public School. It was free.

McBoozer was on WBBM radio this morning with Softball Delimore. That Delimore would ask softball questions of Jeffrey Dahmer. McLush spouted only bullshit, I couldn't recognize the city he was talking about.

According to the Inside-Booster in an article by Bob Zuley, the combined 019/023 District is DOWN 112 officers since McCarthy's announcement of the combined district in October 2011. I was there. McCarthy also promised that the manpower of the new combined district would not go down at all after the merge.

LIAR!

It is down 112 officers and Craig Delimore doesn't have the sense to ask about this stuff. A dedicated company man in the trained seal club is he all right.

I saw the same article, 112 officers down is right.

This is it, if you don't mail in your FOP ballot in the next day it probably won't be received in time to be counted. If you are happy with the past 6 years then don't vote. You are sure to get more of the same.

++++++++++++++++++++

Request stats and data through R&D, failing that the data is FOIA-able.

Call deferred comp and ask them about the self directed option. Many more funds to choose from that perform much better then the funds the city gives you to choose from. Deferred comp gets pissed when you ask them about self directed option because your moving money from nationwide into these other funds. It's worth the phone call.

The problem is that no matter how you get the numbers, those numbers are phoney baloney. They have been "massaged" and are unreliable. You can take great care of them to format reports, input them in a spreadsheet etc. but the raw data is not right.

That is a main reason why the FBI does not accept crime stats from the City of Chicago.

Sad to say but do not ever trust numbers from the City.

11AM-1PM, 5PM-6PM, and especially 9PM-10PM are still OK. It's just that dignity-free, information-free morning mess. So you got a tablet computer and can do selfies and say "poop" on the air now. Juveniles. Get over yourselves.

Dear 3/02/2014 10:10:

If the writers at the Herald and members of Zalewski's office (Alderman, not his son who was placed as State Senator) could stop leaving their BS propaganda in the comments, that would be great.

Garfield Ridge is HARDLY being "revived". The Ald. Zalewski you tout has his office 100 yards from the corner of Archer and Melvina, where a cement post has laid in huge cracked chunks strewn across the parkway, the result of a car crash months ago that also crashed into a local dry cleaner. It is apparently too much work for him to have that picked up. It looks like a common corner in Englewood.

As far as the 4 public grade schools and the public high school within 1.5 miles, only a person who hates their kid would send them to a CPS school. You would particularly have to hate them to send them to Kennedy, with a 59% 4 year graduation rate - 9 points lower than the CPS average and 23 points lower than the state average.

To even talk ridiculously about Garfield Ridge being like "LaGrange" shows how out of touch you are. The populace of Garfield Ridge is made up of the city workers, mostly cops, firefighters, and teachers, who are FORCED by residency to live in Chicago. They in turn have no money to spend on expensive dinners and $70 trinket junk bracelets made by stay at home moms and sold in boutiques whose rent is paid for by their husbands - because they instead spend all of their money on sending their children to better schools. If you think the taxpaying residents of Garfield Ridge send their kids to the public schools in the area, you're delusional. Those schools are attended by majority Hispanic and Black students who are either living illegally in this country or bussed in for the sake of diversity, and because they don't like the shitty schools in their own neighborhoods which they've destroyed. Few families in either group are paying taxes. The residents of Garfield Ridge are slaves to Chicago residency, paying the way for everyone else and then taking out loans and second mortgages to send their kids to schools where EVERYONE graduates in 4 years.

And here's a fact: Zalewski could care less. Drive down any ghetto boulevard and see the nice black "gas lamp"-look streetlights, the medians filled with flowers. I have a streetlight in front of my house that is a rusted, rotten green with a faded Vrdolyak sticker on it.

A week after all the snow was plowed from the main roads and one pass was made down the side-streets, do you think any plows were sent to plow street-to-curb so people could park? God no. The city waits for the slaves of the 8th district to snowblow and then put old furniture out to save a spot, making the whole block look like some hillbilly Canaryville block. Do you think a plow ONCE went down an alley? No chance.

So save the lies - some of us have actually lived there our whole lives and know better. Garfield Ridge is the next Pilsen. Look east of Cicero on Archer and ask yourself if you'd move your family there. All of that trash has been making its way west. Garfield Ridge will be like Summit East in no time.

If you're smart you'll buy a shitty house in the city and rent it out to a cop and use it for mail and move your family to a nice suburb, and not open your mouth about it at work. Just do it.

And all the idiots who are building mansions stacking second stories on 1950's ranch homes - you will never sell those houses for what you are spending. And in 10 years you will not be able to live in them. Spend the money on a nice suburban property instead of these laughable 30 foot lot mansions with a backyard I can spit across. They are, for 100 reasons, poor investments.

McCarthy sad he doesn't believe in outside units flooding districts because they have no vested interest in the community, ie. TRU, MSF. But yet he will authorize paying 300 people a day time and a half to flood an area where they don't normally work. What's the difference and where's the sense?
