Slum Times Slime Job

We weren't going to cover this. Hundreds, even thousands of people break state laws every single day. Tens of thousands get away with it. Those unlucky few who get caught usually pay a fine, which is what happened in this case (disclosure - we have a casual e-mail relationship with Mr. Vandermyde and support his efforts via the NRA):
  • After a state conservation officer ticketed the National Rifle Association’s Illinois lobbyist last December for breaking a hunting law, the gun-rights advocate dutifully paid his $120 fine.

But Todd Vandermyde, one of Springfield’s most powerful and effective lobbyists, didn’t stop there.

A month later, he worked with one legislator to rewrite the law he broke
The Sun Times makes this seem like some sinister effort on the part of Vandermyde to get away with something. And what law was broken? Transporting an uncased crossbow on an ATV. Wow. The citation doesn't say it was loaded, the citation doesn't say it was cocked. Just that it was uncased. Reporter Dave McKinney makes the allegation that it was loaded, but we've seen nothing to indicate that (yes, we have the FOIA request that was provided to the reporter.)

McKinney then finds someone to badmouth Vandermyde (aside from the Conservation cops who say Vandermyde was "rude"):
  • “Look, I like Todd. I do, in spite of myself,” said state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, D-Chicago, a gun-control advocate and a lead architect of the state’s same-sex marriage law. “But if I got a ticket and changed the law because I got a ticket, people would be screaming bloody murder. I don’t think it’s any different when someone with the level of influence and access that he has does it, too,” she said.
It's hard to believe this woman is a Chicago politician - her words rang a few memory bells with us. In fact, just last month we wrote about one particular aldercreature who is trying to change the speed camera law because she has a lead foot.

And then we remembered another aldercreature, the father-in-law to a jailed governor who managed to change a law for a one-day open window to register a number of GUNS that he owned. That ordinance benefited one and only one citizen -Dick Mell.

And Rep. Casidy happens to be the "lead architect" of a law that directly benefits her and her same-sex partner - imagine that. Hypocrisy - thy name is "Illinois democrat."

According to Mr. Vandermyde, he wasn't attempting to do any of that. His complaint about the ticket wasn't that he was caught with an uncased crossbow - he was and paid the fine - his issue is with the government coming onto private property without a warrant and in violation of the Fourth Amendment. And as he is a person who is intimately familiar with most, if not all, of the Constitutional Amendments and how they affect our every day lives, his statements to that end carry quite a bit more weight that a political opportunist who is more than a little interested in taking away your and our Rights. In light of the Obama administration's complete disregard for the rule of law along with the NSA scandal and the ever intrusive eye of government in every aspect of our lives, this is a good idea.

And the Slum Times is just looking for opportunities to smear those types of people.

Mr. Vandermyde is a saint. He followed the rules as a good citizen should, paying the fine when the unjust law was applied.

Fuck Illinois and every corrupt socialist politician who comes up with these tyrannical laws in the first place.

We had a "WTF?" moment while reading the article on P.11 of the scum-times (laying around at the carwash - we didn't buy it.)

"STATE LEGISLATURE

Lobbyist pushes to change gun law he broke"

Huh? What fucking gun?

He had a CROSSBOW for cryin' out loud!

They just had to put the word "gun" in the article even though a gun had nothing to do with what occurred.

The word "gun" is the dog whistle for the gun snatching nanny-statists and "Moms Against Things."

>CUE: God-Awful racket not unlike a chicken rendering plant... Lots o' cluckin' with shit and feathers flying everywhere<

"The Dads Who Support Them" have been relegated to standing on the sidelines to nurse the babies... Or else.

(Giggle at those poor saps... Weep for American Manhood being co-opted for the soft and smooth shaven, breasts having, lefty Euro-weenie model)

Mr. Vandermyde was well within his right to push for change of an onerous hunting law.

Good on him for setting the scum-times straight.

Kinda reminds me of the time in 2007 when Alderman Mel, who wrote the old gun ordinance that prevented registrations forgot to register his own. Quickly the council passed an amnesty ordinance that allowed Mel to register his guns. Daley was OK with that. Don't remember much crying from the Slum Times over that one,

The current ccw would not have come into existence if a citizen did not break the law and petitioned the Supreme Court to determine the constitutionality of the law.

The sun times has little journalistic credibility in Chicago.

State Representative Kelly Cassidy is beyond contempt. A complete and total hypocrite. This militant lesbian worked to promote same sex marriage as was noted. She is also working to pass a law that will make it illegal for parents to send their children to see a therapist if they are concerned that their son or daughter is confused about their sexuality, but it is alright for the State of Illinois to fund the Center on Halsted Street. Not that it matters, but Cassidy who is Jewish prefers to use an Irish ballot name to get more votes.

Vandermyde should have known about the Supreme Court case on "Open Fields" to begin with. Or at least before he started this nonsense someone he works with should have told him. It's like someone not knowing about a Terry stop or something. Open Fields, Curtilage: Yeah, look it up.

SC you are absolutely correct. I also believe that the Constitution applies to Conservation Officers and they should abide by its mandate: The people should be protected against unreasonable searches and seizures by agents of the government. I applaud Mr. Vandermyde for attempting to correct an injustice.

God Bless SCC. This is how every corrupt politician does it. They lose battles so they try and smear good people. Kelly Cassidy wasn't even elected. She was appointed...or anointed. Cassidy, i could care less who you sleep with. But I do care who comes on my private property. Todd Vandermyde stands up for our constitutional rights. YOU stand up to take them away. Big difference.

"....caught with an uncased crossbow..."

More like "noticed with an uncased crossbow." Like "fishing two minutes after sunset" or something, petty-ass fish-and-game rules violation.

Maybe Todd installed brackets on the ATV to securely hold the crossbow, and a case would have interfered?

If he got a minor rule changed so that others wouldn't be pestered so, good for him.

Worried about something that might be "loaded?" Look at the pics and video of the late and unlamented Raason "CPDK" Shaw right on this web site, waving three different handguns around.

If Dave McKinney wants to see something significant, he should drive out to the South or West sides and watch the open hunting season on grandmothers and toddlers and sleeping kids. Use any illegal firearm you want, no bag limits, and the hours are sunrise to sunrise, 24/7/365.

Well what does Mr Vandermyde say to you?
He has posted on the topic extensively on a site that says it was loaded and he did comment on the event and did not deny it was loaded.
I think you are right that the factor makes a difference. I am concerned if he is giving coppers doing their jobs a hard time though.
If he is the top of the NRA food chain and a hunter he had to know the laws.
If he is simply ignoring the laws and then conflicting with coppers who do their jobs, thats not good for coppers or the NRA.

Yes, because politicians pass a law it must be right. Especially laws that go against the Constitution (e.g. unreasonable search, right to bear arms).

It's weak people like you that don't mind bending over for the government that are making this country weak.

By the way, there are thousands of laws on the books and hundreds more added every year. You probably break several each day and don't even realize it. Put you little panties on and turn yourself in!

It comes to the point that you can hardly get down the sidewalks for all the "streetscaping" and planters and fencelets and other fussy little crap obstructing the public way.

...and then you get to the corner, where the new 55' semitrailers have gouged across the parkway, smashed the curb, and keep taking down light poles, hydrants, and so forth. The farther back you move things, the more they drag those dualies diagonally across the street corner. Those huge tire tracks get there somehow, huh? Stand back when you're waiting to cross the street these days -- way back.
