Smart Phones and Meters
Anyone downtown know anything about this? Sounds like something cops should know, not just in the classier parts of town either:
- For all you beat cops that like to check the meters in 001 and 018 and everywhere else get ready,
The pay by phone program goes live next week.
Supposedly there is an app on the city issued smartphones you will be required to use before you can just issue a ticket for Expired Meter.
Here's the app site - we can't imagine citizens leaving their phones on the dashboard with the meter info - they'd bake in the summer sun - or disappear. We haven't heard anything about "city issued smartphones" though - can such a thing exist? We scanned the Expired Meter.com site but didn't see anything last night.Sounds interesting to say the least, but how to pull it off?

A mystery buried within an enigma.
Stop checking the meters.
Problem solved.
Since King Midget sold the meters, I have not, and will not, write a ticket to a car parked in violation.
Dude, now it's like, way cool to pay too much for parking.
I just love Chicago !
I wish I was as smart as my phone.
i've seen the ppo's on foot patrol who actually have department issued smartphones that they can use to run names and plates on...and the veteran beat cop can't even get a damn pdt in their car.
You're able to pay using your phone, but you'll still get the paper ticket for your dashboard.
"... parking enforcement workers will be scanning the license plate to check whether the spot has been paid for with the app."

Ok...
Here it is in a nutshell...
No phone on dash or receipt or anything like that. Pay by phone app.
City enforcement staff have the other app on their smartphones.... Don't see a pay box receipt? Run plate through your opsman mobile app before you can write any expired meter ticket at all. System is down? No ticket allowed per policy now. News agencies will be all out and about watching the ticket writers in all departments .
Questions about this app for the enforcement side? Call 744-PARK and request a mouth breather like me come over and demonstrate it to your staff.

The app is pretty simple to use, log in at start of shift, keeps you logged in with no problems; drag down to refresh the list.
Type in the license plate to the search box just like you'd write a normal Parker; 12345, 12345-B, 12345PV, etc...
Two color codes, green and yellow
Green = paid and active
Yellow = almost expired.
App will tell you when they paid, what rate they paid at and what time they expire at.
As for city issued smart phones, if there is someone from unit 212 you know, they can probably verify about the app being on their phones yes or not yet.
We were told in our Friday meeting that all agencies would have this, would be trained on it and would not be allowed under threat of step discipline to enforce meters without it. There also was an undertone of "don't let this new tech step get you to stop writing meter tickets" intimated by the new Comptroller & staff managers.
For us at Finance it's not a big deal, we are getting new ticket machines in the next several months that will physically incorporate the app software and plate search into one platform along with the ability to run temp plates and have a higher pixel camera.
For those of you that check meters in the CPD, you're going to be parking and have to type into your phone app first.
For those of you that have android phones, download the opsman mobile app, and your bosses can get you re log in and password info, + the app is free.
On the flip side, no more worry about meter tickets, sign up for this and you can never have to go to a pay box again.

Actually been to a couple cities that are already using this program. The person parking simply downloads the app, puts in the parking meter number or space number they are parked in and then pays with a credit card. Very convenient for the parking person because the app will tell you when the time is about to expire and you can pay again without even being by the car. The bad part is the meter or space doesnt have anyway to tell the beat cop that you have paid. The person writing citations must have a city issued phone that will show which spots have been paid for and which are expired. I'm assuming only the LAZ and revenue whores will only have the phones.
ParkChicago.com is the site, and you prepay for parking.
Heard it on the radio this morning.
The meter maids were issued these about a month ago and are in training now.
This had to be a fable, cell phone on dash where it can be stolen! Much easier just ride the Cta and hand it over when the beasts from the east take it!
My crazy uncle used to have this flat metal stick he would put in the coin slot of the parking meter. It would ring up just like a quarter.
The phones are not out in every district yet, but are on the way.
Related topic. On traffic stops, I get more people showing me their cell phones with a photo of their insurance cards.
No city employee should write a meter ticket--ever!
OT: As for the speed cameras I wonder the following. It does not tell you how fast you were going so how can they prove you are speeding? Does every single car get a ticket when they are all zoom past the camera? What about keeping up with the flow of traffic? Is that out the window now? What other questions have not been answered?

There will be no receipt. There is a smart phone app that is to be used by those that actually still check meters.
No receip? Run the plate with the app first. Plate doesn't show in the app and no receipt? Them you can issue.

No you won't Comprehend what you read
No Officers should be checking the private meters.
I stopped writing meter violations when midget mayor Daley light sold the meters to the outfit in Boston a few years ago. Cause I'm no schmuck!

That'll happen the day the Department pays for my cell phone. Not before.
Anyone that issues a parking citation for a privately owned meter company is a stone pimp
Also, you can use a "public pay phone." There is alou get charged ways one near by to help.
This domed to failure when y0u get you CC bill showing a thousand dollar plus charge. Then try and get a credit folks !
Then those rat revenue people will still give you a parker. Then try and fight that to no avail.
FYI - Daley friends that bought the meters are all from the Middle-East !! Not Boston idiot.

So your saying what exactly ? You should get them over a ppo or the fact that the department is so short on pdts ?
SO where is my department issued cell phone?
I hope the computer genius at HQ know the all APPs take memory in a phone and memory cost money.
Also read the contract of the APP it has access to all your functions of your phone!!!
It can tract where you patrol all day
It can monitor how many plates you run.
and of course know who you call and how long you chat for on the cities phone.
Pilot Program
ParkChicago is currently in a pilot program in the West Loop and is ONLY available at metered parking bound by Washington Street to Monroe Street and Halsted Street to Racine Avenue.
We recommend signing up when you start seeing the ParkChicago signs in areas where you park.
What about exempt changes... SCC???
they'd bake in the summer sun - or disappear.
My guess is the second one.

Nice try, but the department order specifically PROHIBITS you from using your own cell phone.
And, like others said, I'm not using my personal phone for department business. If my job requires one, supply it to me. Last I checked a smart phone was not part of the uniform.
Now, as I always ask, does this new thingy make enforcement easier or harder? Harder of course, Cant just read a receipt in the window anymore.
If it makes it easier, you might get more tickets. If it makes it harder, you'll probably get less.
Kind of like DUIs (can get quite involved) and ANOV's for weed - harder to write the ticket and all the related BS than actually lock them up. And as an added bonus, if they are a gang banger, they can't be I-bonded - have to go to court, so off the street for a day.

Thanks Mr. Petersen. Do you also know if eel taxpayers are paying for your new machines and the smartphones to be issued to all depts? I sure hope we are still not subsidizing LAZ parking company. That's a lot of dough.
