True or Rumor?
A couple variations on this one popping up in the comment sections - true? Or a troll working overtime?
- The city has decided to 'utilize' the tact teams on their days off in various 'impact' zones through out the city on their rdos starting May1st. Apparently downtown thought this was a way to fill those hot spots without opening up too much Vri. Downtown said that the tact teams would be more proactive than the people who were gobbling up all the VRI dates. So this is their way of skirting the system and not using senority while filling those VRI boxes. Little do they know that with all the other usual crap they make tact teams do, they will be seeing several grievances from officers who have both rdos cancelled
We can see VRI ramping up - shootings numbers are getting out-of-hand. We can also see Tact teams giving up a day off - there are already teams working downtown more than a few nights a week to combat the "wilding." But this? Seems a bit over the top - but desperate people have desperate ideas.

Partially true. Matrix designed for TACT to work RDOs during summer on Michigan Av. and in VRI boxes. VRI is also increasing total officers for its detail. No grievance can be filed because TACT is management position and will not interfere or be assigned as VRI officers. Enjoy your summer and be safe.

If you look at the end of May and weekends in May, you will see VRI is already increasing from the 120 number. I saw as high as 198.

Had confirmation that saturation teams are also being offered this....too many dogs taking too many days of VRI ask the 2 on north ave that on viewed a fatal hit and run accident...they didn't even bother giving a flash

I've personally seen VRI cars fleeing the areas of shots fired, persons shot, and man with a gun calls. The VRI people get to their box, park, and go to sleep for 8 hours. The only time they move from that spot is for lunch or to flee from a nearby hot call or loud report. Its friggin embarrassing. Im no hard-charger, but Jesus Christ, Ive never purposely driven the opposite direction from a gun call. These people working VRI now are the reason why they keep cutting VRI back and will be the reason for it being shut down completely in the near future. So file all the grievances you want, whats right is right.
Look what happen to the tac team in 006 while working under pressure, about 10 po's drop it and left...canceling rdo's is gonna put a lot of po's under stress and pressure... this has signs of disaster reading all over it. Already being done.I know 007 has had their tact teams rdos cancelled the last two weekends and 004,005,006, 010 and 011 are having their tact teams work this weekend as well. Those are the districts that I know of along with Gang Enforcement being forced to work an extra 4 hours.

That means the already short-handed officers in 020/019/018/001/002 and 003 can handle all crashes and incidents on LSD in addition to their regular backlogs of calls.

Make it voluntary, I see some guys doing it because a lot of us are hurting for money in these trying times, make it mandatory and watch morale fall even lower than it already is and you'll probably see a bunch of good guys on the teams say "f**k it" and go back to the watch. We know the mayor hates us, deeply hates us but hey Supe, What about family first. What about guys being burned out. What about lack of sleep and rest. What about our health. Me along with a lot of other guys on our team are in court 3-5 times a week, every week then we come to work to literally work another back to back shift. If were lucky enough to get a day off, it would be nice to see my family or have a normal life for a day or two. Now you want to take that away from us. The hell with you. We all know how to fix the out of control crime in this city but you don't want to listen. Canceling all our days off isn't a solution.

SUBJECT: New Bicycle-based TAC Team
Due to the inordinate amount of shootings in certain districts, a new anti-crime and crime preventive strategy is necessary.
A newly formed group, the BBTAC Team, will be used to cover several Districts on a trial basis.
Districts 6 and 8 will be the initial districts this initiative will be undertaken. Other districts will be added as we project a downturn in violence using this new approach and when the numbers demonstrate that, we can add on other districts.
Equipment issues and details will be discussed with the BBTAC when we form the group which will be recruited out of existing TAC teams.
Seniority will not be an issue as this is a new group and because it is deemed experimental and will be funded federally, seniority does not apply. Any qualified TAC team member can be suggested by their supervisor and they will be accepted from a citywide recruitment.
Arrest procedures will be different due to limitations of the trail bikes that will be used. Any arrested person will need to be handcuffed and ready for pick-up by a four-wheeled unit. This means securing the person(s) in a safe and timely manner before such unit(s) will arrive.
At a senior staff meeting, this was thoroughly discussed and several options were suggested and accepted:
1) ANY detainee can be handcuffed to the nearest lightpole for pick-up. This would be considered a Common Waiting Station (CWS)
2) Violent detainees may need more attention before a 4-wheeled unit arrives and the officer cannot leave them at a lightpole. This would be coded as a Standard Officer Liability (SOL) event.
3) Arrested individuals may cause crowd reaction at the scene and that will be coded as a Crowd Yield Alarm (CYA) which could invoke a 10-1 depending on the dispatcher and their determination of the severity of the call.
We have already calculated that the majority of arrests will be covered by CWS, but there will be times that the officers will have to initiate CYA within the district and also be SOL at least 10 times a month.
This is a progressive initiative that should work. In order to have this year-round, we will also be buying 20 Trek bikes with the Cross-Country Ski option package.
Can I get event numbers while working vri?
TRUE. Called the union, City can do this under "specialized training" that's why the Tact Teams are being used. All that training the department sends tact teams to sealed their fate. The city did this in case of a grievance.
So what tact super star is going to file a grievance?
None!
Just go back to the watch and drive a beat car, of course they should know the will be bouncing as punishment for not rolling over.

VRI was originally intended for tact teams and other aggressive units. Lazy ass do nothing slugs then started whining and grieving and the city caved in.
I have seen VRI officers sleep during deployment hide in alleys empty lots and graveyards watch netflix and run the other way or dont respond during 10 1 calls, assists, shots fired and other hot calls. I have also seen officers stop harass and ticket legit law abiding citizens and give thugs a pass.
As much as I hate the city mayor and Supt I have to agree on this one. Drop VRI hire tact and officers that want to do their job, and give them the shot at ot. One of the previous posters had it right.
Oh and I got over 20 years I got decent activity Im not on tact and I can work VRI when ever I want.
They are already doing this: they made gang enforcement unit stay late on Easter Sunday morning (saturday to sunday). Yes they got paid but really, who really wanted to stay late on the one day of the year that most want to be with their family.

Ive worked this from the get go and worked with a different partner every time and never seen what you have described in your post. Most of the hot calls have VRI cars there before the beat car dogging it.

Few months ago, same area, there was an in-progress call literally a block away from where VRI guys were parked, they didn't even bother to check that...
They pulled this crap years ago when they first came out with the doc and those stupid 'deployment zones'... people fled tact in droves.... Work my day off in a strange district with a whopping 3 block zone in which I have to produce numbers? Yeah, no thanks...
If you do VRI, you're a shill. If you work tact, you're an idiot. We'll be getting the shit end of the stick as long as greedy, thirsty motherfuckers keep sucking the proverbial teet of this moronic dept. Rahm and his buddies are sitting on a mountain of cash, yet continue to cry poor and hire at the rate of a faucet trickle.

SWAT now has unlimited overtime. They want us to work our eight hour day and then another eight hour shift (extension of tour). We have to give up one of our days off and work 16 hours that day. I don't need the fucking money. I need my family.

This just in...desk personnel to have their rdo cancelled and work the desk in busy districts to cut down the waiting time for reports
I can understand doing this if you were really desperate for money, BUT if you're not.. why would you give up every single weekend of your summer? Summer is the time to get out and enjoy time with friends and family on the weekends. BBQ, baseball games, etc.. Is that tact spot really worth it? Believe me, the watch is not bad, not bad at all. No pressure, not as much court and steady start/exit times. Life is to short.

The reason for the bike teams, is there are no vehicles at all, due to the city budget cuts to CPD. Remember, tact teams are not what they used to be. VRI is mainly only a deterence, and the piece of shit PO who says he sees VRI PO's driving from gun shot calls is an out and out liar. I to work VRI, and most PO's do a great job!!!! Remember the city is not looking out for your best interests. FOP, don't negotiate with the shitty! Leave our contract the way it is, we are still getting paid! And don't negotiate our benefits, till after Rahmtwinkles gets the Casino and TIF monies where they belong. He is waiting to settle our contracts and pension/insurance benefits before he touches new monies.

True, saturation teams were told if RDO falls on Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday one of those RDO's will be cancelled. They said it will be time and a half. I think it should be double time if I'm not mistaken per contract, perhaps someone could enlighten on the subject.

Unlimited OT at SWAT. Those douche bags can work an extra 60 hours a week at time and half. They don't even do anything but work out and train. It takes them forever to get to a job. I don't think that's fair to the average copper in patrol that SWAT can work 16 hour days 7 days a week. Isn't that a contract violation. . Why are there different rules for different units? I have 6 years on and can't work VRI or work on a Tact Team. I'm single and want to make more money. Any suggestions???

Swat teams should be assigned to beat cars only they work shift work around the clock in their military uniforms rather than being all together this way you will have at least 6-8 people on the street at any given time who can leave their assigned beat to respond to any scene that their needed.
VRI is a failure. Many dog asses making lots of money for no work.

The city is correct in using tact teams instead of VRI people! At least the tact teams will do something during their tour and drive around and be visible. I've personally seen VRI cars fleeing the areas of shots fired, persons shot, and man with a gun calls. The VRI people get to their box, park, and go to sleep for 8 hours. The only time they move from that spot is for lunch or to flee from a nearby hot call or loud report. Its friggin embarrassing. Im no hard-charger, but Jesus Christ, Ive never purposely driven the opposite direction from a gun call. These people working VRI now are the reason why they keep cutting VRI back and will be the reason for it being shut down completely in the near future. So file all the grievances you want, whats right is right.

I have worked VRI over 150 times and every time my partner and I have brought in some type of activity. (no heads because the south side district desk crews treat you like shit.) I have seen the vast majority of officers working bring in something and doing numerous traffic stops. Also, remember we were told that the main concern of VRI is "VISIBILITY" and not bullshit activity. Also, if nothing is going on in my 2 by 2 block box am I supposed to make shit up. VRI has accomplished on what is was asked to do and that is to reduce violence and shootings in the box. Why do bosses after awhile have to fuck things up...since when is bullshit activity a determination that you are doing your job...I did my job...I patrolled my box in a proper manner and dealt with anything in a suspicious manner.
I see a bunch of you whining about VRI guys not doing shit. Duh! The entire appeal of VRI was that you cleared $300.00 without having to do shit. Try to keep up, people.
Geesh! Didn't know that many of you were such hard chargers.

The Shitty gives two shits about each and every one of you and you will realize that come retirement. So if you are smart you will grab as much money as you can from this rich ass city and you will give them as little police work as possible. Especially when working special or detailed to those democratic shit holes. Wise up.
Does anbody in CPD (besides Tact) not hate Tactical units? We should remove the word Tactical from their designation, it deserves to be there as much as the word Merit in Meritorious promotions. An endless stream of reckless conduct pinches, and 1 rock PCS arrests. And when that cant be found, they hurry up to an in custody by ODPO, or shoplifting pinch. How tactical is that?
All - Burn out is not a nice thing to expierence.
It leads to alchol abuse, severe depressio/anxiety, and yes, illegal drug abuse. Any many other things that a person never wants to feel.
These assholes will push you to the brink and waving the money in front of you.
Do a side job that will not raise your blood pressure. You home life, yourself, and your health, both current and furure is at stake.
Copper' and heart problems go hand in hand in today' CPD.

Funny - would be easier if they had just left the desks alone and not screw with having 'x' people on the desk and no DSS because we don't have enough Sgt's and then don't pay out of grade. That makes for a great working relationship with the city.
Run upstairs 25x a day to hand out radios then back to do a report, then work on the worksheets & A&A's. Just wait till they actually follow the order and send desk personnel out to cover the 4 crossings we have every day. "Sorry sir, the desk officer will be back in 1 1/2 hours, after the kiddies have all been crossed" Then maybe they will have to cancel the RDO's.

The CPD is night and day from 15 years ago. CPD is in the pits from what I hear.
Don't give up until to get to your goal, be assertive and relentless. Befriend the workers kid.
The bosses, may they be black, white, etc do not care what color you are. They want people who will do the job and follow their directions.
I cannot imagine being stuck on the 1st. watch every month, it does suck. Think positive and take the tests as they come.
We all know that sometimes people get a nice spot and are dogs, but who knows, you might be at the right place at the right time.
Hang in there.
I had 33 yoj and retired a few years ago. I loved the job 90 percent of the time.
Be safe and keep your self esteem up kid.

Well actually no one has asked me to come on Tact. I try to make arrests but come up empty cause the guys I work with don't want to do anything. I'm new to this district.
Is this a grievance? In 018th district last year only tact and 4th watch can work their days off.

What happen to the suggestion by a PO at the meeting with state representatives that suggested this great idea; Tack on a one dollar fee for every one hunderd dollar transaction at the board of trade, at the commodities center and the options traders???!!! The two aldermen at the meeting agreed. Those financial institutions make (actually)trillions a year, and they get huge tax loop holes. I would love to spend time working on something that actually matters but sadly that is not the way this department has gone. Everything is I need this and this and need it yesterday. Tact has always been quantity over quality (if you say otherwise your fooling yourself). The department could care less if you solved a homicide pinch. That would involve you getting overtime. They want their numbers for compstat and that's all. If Gerry or the edits actually knew what goes on the week before a commander goes to these meetings, they'd be shocked. Tact teams are pawns in their game. Always have. So enough with the tact teams aren't shit comments. We know were a joke but they money is good and I couldn't come anywhere near to what I make now on the watch

If its so bad, go back on the beat car. No one is forcing you to work the desk. In our district all the work you listed is not only being done by the desk, but the radio room po, the watch secretary, etc.

Here's an idea. Respond quickly to all in progress calls. Do street stops and traffic stops. Learn who the dealers are and keep stopping them. Do surveillance when the radio dies down. Groom a couple of snitches and get information you can use to make arrests. Arrest domestic battery offenders every time there is any mark on the victim. Instead of driving straight to the scene of a murder or shooting just to stand around, tour the area. Stop people and cars coming FROM the crime. Write a DUI every once in a while. Write a few movers every month for your minor and major room. Take in a misdemeanor arrest at least once a month. Don't be shy to make an arrest late in your tour. Write good paper. Help your fellow officers. Learn the ins and outs of traffic accidents, domestics, drug cases, weapons cases, search and arrest warrants. Be a source of information for your watch and be ready to offer that info and still be eager to LEARN MORE from the other cops on the watch.
There is nothing you can do on tact that you cant do on the watch. Every court date on midnights is on overtime.
In short, if you want OT, do your job. But, referring to your fellow officers as douche bags most certainly means that you will do nothing I have suggested.
So instead, just keep being a bitter asshole and see how that works out for you.
To all the dogs that won't be getting VRI, because some of us that actually work will be getting our RDO's cancelled to make $$$. It's about time they stopped you lazy asses from reaping the benefits of the overtime. The only way overtime should be given is activity, seniority should be used to break an activity tie. Dog asses that do absolutely nothing except the pittance of a VRI requirement. I'm not worried about activity requirements at all.

This is nothing new. They have been doing that for years. Canceling the first RDO of the tact teams. When we were working the 6/2 schedule they would cancel your friday the first weekend and then your saturday the next weekend.

Did you forget to take your medications again?
Ok for the officer who said double time it's not but you could have a 6/7 work day. If your off say Sunday/Monday and days are cancelled Friday would then be 6th work day and you get an additional 4.5 hrs at time and a half. The 6th or 7th day must be a work day not rdo. Days must be between Sunday Saturday day off Tues weds. You worked Sunday Monday days cancelled thee weds Friday again is 6th day Saturday 7th day you get both Sorry hope you can follow doing this on phone.

I really get an anxiety attack laugh watching these TAC GUYS doing a street stop. Their attire with a fucking uniform duty belt is too funny. Us old Tac guys in the 1980 never had anything exposed. We all carried two and if we walked into a business, people did not know we were the police.

Thank you for the nice post. I appreciate you taking the time to give me advice unlike others. Those are great ideas. I will try them. Sorry SWAT guys, I was just pissed off cause one of the guys who lives in my neighborhood and is on SWAT and all he does is throw it in my face about his paycheck and how he is High Speed and I'm Low Drag. He's been on the job for 16 years and started off with HBT and promoted to SWAT.
Must be a lot of new guys or people who never ever worked tact or gangs that sound shocked and call for a grievance if the dept. cancels your RDO if your on a tact team. Remember people working tact is voluntary as in you voluntarily give the dept. permission to change your RDO, cancell your RDO, and to change your start times at their will. I remember back I the day working to 0200 hrs and having to be back at 0700 hrs for a detail . The dept. Can do this so you shouldn't be surprised, just know what your getting into and read your contract. Now if you give up your tact spot and they don't return you back to the watch and keep you on the team I believe you are then to be compensated at time and a half. The only way to send a message is to " quit" tact enmass but it has only been done sporadically in yrs past. I know tact may look good when they get their ducks and long lunches but when your RDO is cancelled and your hrs start changing like the wind a beat car does look attractive. Remember the grass is always green on the other side until you fet there.
Yes, and in 009 the front office secretaries get to work their days off with the tact team for time and a half in violation of the contract.
Somehow, the district secretary, who hasn't seen the street in years and regularly dissappears manages to rake in $2k-$3k a month in OT. Yet never seems to work a detail .... only watch slugs get sent to the BS details.
