What price does one put on the life of a child when hot weather fuels violence?

Wow, really? We should spend all of our tax dollars into a growing and endless hole in the ground because if it "saves just one child, it's worth it?" That's the typical brainless, liberal argument that Rahm makes on a daily basis - "it's for the children."
There isn't a single study that has ever linked air conditioning in the schools to rates of violence in Chicago. Ever. So of course, you must suspend all reason and accept the spending of another $100 million (that we don't have) to alleviate a problem that no one has ever quantified as even existing. We don't ever remember missing a single day of primary or middle school due to the heat, and we did K-thru-12 here.

Funny, when I was growing up in Elmwood Park we never had A/C in any of our schools. I can't remember a single person getting shot.
Is summer school now mandatory? Why $100 million for air conditioning? How about save some money by not offering summer school at all.

Brilliant. Like free smoke detectors after a fire. A shooting happens in your neighborhood due to the heat, everyone gets a free AC unit. Brilliant I say.
100 million spent on school AC, means a 100 million dollars are injected back into the local economy, through jobs preparing buildings for installation and for installation of the AC units, not to mention materials used in the installation. It is a win win for the citizens of Chicago.
The conspiracy theorist in me believes the Libs won't be happy until dormitories are built to house all the children and the taxpayer is responsible for their care 24x7.

I spent many a hot day sweltering in grade school and high school but didn't go out and shoot someone at the end of the day. Having ac in schools is not going to bring our crime rate down. What's next? Keeping the schools open as cooling centers 24/7? Why the times gives her that much print space for her recycled stories is crazy.
Why don't they do the same thing private schools do when things break down and need to be repaired/replaced have a fundraiser or pledge drive. But wait that would mean not having cable or buying that flat screen tv. Make those that want to use it pay for it, I'm already paying for the CPS extras as it is. Let's make the ones that use it sacrifice and give up something for once. I work and pay for what my kids and I have now it's your turn.

These air conditioners are going to be window units, and they will need to be bigger than a small bedroom window unit. Wait until Rahm gets the electrician's bill when they find out the outlets cant supply the power needed for the units. That is, if they all don't disappear like the iPads did.
Amazing that politicians and puppets, like Mayor Emmanuel and Superintendent McCarthy cannot see the problem. Having a shortage of 4,000 police officers may have something to do with it, but working with only 2/3 of a police department in a city where violent crime has risen substantially should lead someone with half a brain to the conclusion that there just may be a correlation. To place the blame on "guns", is simply an ignorant response. They have made it extremely difficult for law abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons, while criminals are allowed to carry, rob, and shoot at others at will with impunity. Their response? Just install signs that read, "Gun Free Zone", Safe School Passage", and installing speeding cameras near parks without any signage whatsoever, to gather revenue for the city, while ignoring the fact that crime is spiraling out of control as people die all around them.
This summer, to appease the 'community' and keep all honor students safe indoors, the city will air-condition all full blast, all cps buildings. Free breakfast, lunches and take home dinners will also be provided. No school work...Hooray!
Who will get the AC contracts? Look for the company with the biggest connections.

Hey Rahm and Gar, you know eventually the children have to leave unless the schools will provide overnighting too. Violence hostels. In other areas it's called boarding school. In our screwed up city, it's called free babysitting. Let's keep those children cool and refreshed for when they hit the streets in the afternoon and evening hours.

Well I've went to CPS schools on the west side that have AC , it's overrated. The only place it works is in the computer room and no one wants to fight there, it's the 3rd best place in the building after the gym and lunch room. Majority of the class rooms didn't have them, mainly just science class rooms, CPU rooms and the main office/staff offices. Hot class rooms didn't make students fight. Complain? Yeah. Fight? No.
Ummm. what is the cost of upgrading all the electrical, I'll bet each classroom doesn't have an extra dedicated 20A circuit and then what's the continuing cost of running these things during 'peak hours' when smart meters are installed everywhere? Or are they going to turn them off when the electricity costs more than 15 cents/kWh?

Went K-through-8 in CPS with no air conditioning. We had poles with hooks to open the windows at the top.
NEVER saw a SINGLE policeman on the premises in all that time.
...and they also want to give them take-home packs of food for the weekends now, so Mama don't mess her nail art fixin anything.
Home Depot is selling a window AC unit for $119. $100 million divided by 119 is about 840,000 window air conditioners.

A Modest Proposal of a Different Sort
Since we no longer worry about the starving kids
of Ireland. It is time to re-apply that brilliant essay to our modern
problem. What to do with the broken children of Chicago? If
followed to the letter my proposal will:
Ensure a 100% college graduation rate
Lower property taxes by at least 75%
Obliterate teacher unions
Create thousands of good high paying jobs.
Make schools profitable
Eliminate violence
All we have to do is assign every person a college degree at birth.
Right on the birth certificate next to the foot print makes it legal.
By this simple bit of paperwork we have it in our power to change society.
Of course this will alter education, so let’s look at the school of the future.
Names will be changed from schools to Feeding Stations or FS.
every person from age 3 until 25 can attend. But since everyone already
has a degree attendance is optional. All social services will move into
the FS’s thus saving billions on rent and heat. The money saved will
be partially returned as a stipend, and every FS will be franchised
to a gang, we will finally face reality and surrender the building.
Our school of the future is vastly different in many ways.
Halls become bazaars full of herbal delights since drugs are now legal.
Gangs will run this operation closely watched by the city department of
revenue. All drugs are taxed. Violence is over, no more drug wars. All meals are free but the lunchroom ladies have to serve three a day so breakfast begins at 8am.
After breakfast we will visit the gym renamed The Garden of Physical Delights. Only basketball allowed, everyone else can go to the pool which has been transformed into one large waterbed. After the Bazaar energy will be worked off on the pool bed, then on to the dispensary to take care of infection caught on the waterbed..
The Library becomes a game room full of computers and video games.
The seats in the auditorium are replaced by larger attractions and gaming tables. Lunch, at noon, then off to afternoon pursuits. Sadly no sports, band
Or any other classes are offered since everyone is stoned by one pm.
Dinner at 5, doors will close promptly at 10pm.
Some teachers will remain as ball boys and gym attendants. Others can make a living
sitting in the dunk tanks lining the old study hall walls. Administrators will be kept on at
full pay .
Most importantly everyone is happy kids, parents, taxpayers, the police, and
politicos. Calm will return to the streets and everyone will want to go to school.
Rahm wants $100 Million in A/C units because he wants these same kids (who he said "won't amount to anything) to have their little asses parked behind a desk year round to keep them off the streets... As other posters have said, Rahm privatizing schools will allow his buddies to turn a profit on these kids who "won't amount to anything."
Funny... All the activists, bullhorn shouters and race card tossers were mute as mimes when Rahm's bit of shit-talk was revealed.
Yet they scream for our collective scalps because of the hurtful truth often times posted here.
Julian high is air conditioned and the still act like animals when before ,during and after school . Police on every corner , herding cattle everyday .big joke .
When she talks about the heat motivating people to kill, she might be talking about the TEACHERS. The kids who are killing are more than likely skipping school or dropouts who spend their days hanging out on the streets waiting for prey to wander by.
We did not have 100 degree days when I went to school. People do have heat stroked when it gets too hot, or are public school kids not people?
