AFSCME Gets a Contract, Too?

  • The City of Chicago and a union representing more than 3,400 city workers struck a deal tentative five-year contract, both sides announced Thursday.

Although neither side released details, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 executive director Henry Bayer said the deal is one that “recognizes the essential role of AFSCME members in providing city services and ensures them fair pay, affordable health care, stable employment and voice on the job.”

Union leaders, however, would not say if the deal includes retroactive pay, which had been a sticking point in the talks.
We guess that they forgot "the letter," too? We can hardly wait to see the details of this contract.

Word is the FOP "isn't in a hurry" to settle anything. We understand the FOP usually led the way in contract negotiations for years, setting the tone for everyone else's raises. This seems to be a bit of a role reversal. We aren't sure if everyone should feel comfortable with this or what. Perhaps the FOP is waiting it out to see if everyone else gets retro, then demand it in light of the Shields' "fuck-up-to-end-all-fuck-ups."

Joined in 01 and have just over a decade on. I've been around for 3 contracts. The 1st one I was a PPO so I didn't understand a lot. If memory serves, the Mayor, in efforts to avoid a tedious negotiation offered, FTOs DTs pay(that wood B pretty nice now)another somewhat major concession was no more picking up corpses by wagon guys. The rest The City just OWNED us. I thought it was a fluke, but The City just kicked the shit out if us. The last contract we didn't do that great. Certainly nothing to write home about. I don't want to keep hammering Shields, but B4 the horses come spinning out of the then it appears one of our retro years is in jeopardy. We need a raise. Parochial schools R a grand a month. We need to put up a fight as opposed to listening to the City's BS & simply accepting it. I'd love to come out if this contract with The City knowing we will fight and we're not U'r bitch. Offer The FOP 7 a fair contract and take into consideration that The CPD serves Chicago and it's citizenry w/reputation that's so well known & respected in a The Law Enforcement Community.

Every other major City is allowed to live out of the City. It's totally unconstitutional these days. A judge would reverse this in a heartbeat. We should live where we want to live. This issue is to law enforcement what gay marriage is to normal society. It's going to happen. It's weed in Rado, Washington, and more States R falling to that as the years go by.
I hope this new care in FOP 7 knows what their doing. Like Frank Dimaria. C'mon, this guy reminds me of when the Cardinals get together in Rome and they old, out if it, and hanging out to some1 that can walk. I don't doubt Mr. Dimaria has done some great things thru his position in FOP 7, but it's time to recognize his time has passed.

Any contract will be a loss since they'll have to raise property taxes to cover it.

This "New Regime" is going to screw us. I just feel it. I want to believe in them but they look so stupid, most notably Ray C. I hope I'm wrong but I doubt it.

Well y'all act like a signature on a contract means something.

Does a signature on a law mean anything?

How about on immigration laws? Gun bans? Free Speech zones. Mortgage loans and investment derivatives.

Does the signature on the US constitution mean anything or do we all just go along with the flow for a paycheck because we all gotta eat?

Since when is getting back pay that you already earned a show of good will that you won something and therefore should give something back as a sign of good will and willingness to negotiate in good faith?

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

Well you got "X" percent raise in the contract. Now let's hold that back and just not pay it so we have a tool to use after election and the next round of contract bullshit.

This is how society collapses my friends. People that are making the rules don't follow the rules. It's happening from the top on down and it's spreading because no one is willing to stand up and do the right thing.

Working for less, or not working: Illinois job gains weak

So Cook county gained 27,500 jobs last year eh?

Well I guess that means as the national media touts that the country has finally recouped all the jobs lost during this depression, for Cook co.Illinois it means that only generating 27,500 jobs PER YEAR that it will take another three to four years to hit that same break even from the prior employment peak.

Looking more closely at the wage data it's interesting as average Cook Co. wages declined by 1%.

What does that tell ya?

That the lousy 27,500 jobs that were created last year are so bad that they sucked the entire wage base down in Chicago.

This average wage DECREASE is in spite of Rahm touting the relocation of so-called "good paying" jobs from surrounding areas.

Rahms bullshit doesn't match the actual results or to put in another way it looks like Rahm has once again fallen short.

" Average weekly wages in Cook County declined 1.0 percent to $1,174 over the same period, while McHenry County wages were down 8.8 percent, the largest drop in Illinois and nearly the largest drop in the nation.

Much of the decline came in manufacturing, where McHenry County average weekly wages were down 30.7 percent to $1,107, according to census data. The county lost 388 manufacturing jobs last year with the closure of several plants, or about 1.4 percent of its factory workforce, said Julie Courtney, director of the McHenry County Workforce Network, which administers job training programs."

WAGES DOWN -- TAXES UP AND GOING EVEN HIGHER.

The only reason for the role reversal is the failure to send the letter. The city did not want to talk to the FOP because of that.

And again, we just sit here and wait like scared little girls. Why aren't we stomping the guts out of city hall? Why don't we stick together?

This is the same union that was told by Mayor Shortshanks that if membership does not accept days offs, he will lay off members. The union voted to accept days off and the stand-up guy that Shortshanks is still laid union members off. Any time a demorat speaks, wait and listen for the lie.

It's not the retro check!! It's the raise we should of gotten for that year!!! The check is the result of that raise. Every year our costs to live in this shithole goes up. If you don't ask for a raise on the expired years already worked you know the city never offer a raise and what's the incentive for the city to EVER talk contact if they never have to pay up? FOP should ask for a simple clause that says once the contract expires then we get a raise in the form of COLA adjustments automatically for that expired worked year. Give the city a reason to give a shit.

Also, fuck the FOP picnic, fishing tournament and all those waste of money ideas- take that money and hire someone who has experience in contractual negotiations such as ours and go after these bastards rather then have a bunch of over ego inflated coppers pretending to know what they are doing. We are our own worst enemy!!!

When the union states "they are in no hurry" which I have heard on two occasions from 2 seperate union reps. It flat out means that we are getting beat in the negotiations. At what point do we become a priority for this union. Our wages have been stagnate for 4 years now. In 2011 we received a 2% raise that was negated by the state income tax increase. In 2012 a 1% increase that was negated by a 2.1% increase in inflation. No increase in 2013 or 2014. We need to wake-up and look at the real unbiased numbers. We will be coming up on 5 years of stagnation if this union doesn't see that this needs to get done now.
