- An Arizona inmate took almost two hours to die by lethal injection on Wednesday and his lawyers said he "gasped and snorted" before succumbing in the latest botched execution to raise questions about the death penalty in the United States.
The execution of convicted double murderer Joseph Wood began at 1:52 p.m. at a state prison complex, and the 55-year-old was pronounced dead just shy of two hours later at 3:49 p.m., the Arizona attorney general's office said.
During that time, his lawyers filed an unsuccessful emergency appeal to multiple federal courts that sought to have the execution halted and their client given life-saving medical treatment.
The appeal, which said the procedure violated his constitutional right to be executed without suffering cruel and unusual punishment, was denied by Justice Anthony Kennedy of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Let us be among the first to hope that every single inmate on Death Row suffers a tiny fraction of the agony they inflicted on their victims and the families of their victims via a botched execution.
Failing that, bring back Ol' Sparky. We'd happily throw the switch on every one of those, too.

Hard to understand. It should be easy for anyone with even the slightest knowledge of drugs/medications to come up with a rapid lethal dose, of a combination of legal drugs. People are offing themselves every day with prescription drugs.

I am not for lethal injections.
Lethal injections are someone's idea of an "easier way to go" approach that really makes things worse and riles up the anti-capital punishment crowd when it doesn't go right.
No one wants to wait two hours before they can declare final sentence has been carried out.
Even electricity sometimes gets botched.
A firing squad is immediate and over with in a couple of seconds.

Though I wish we could 'Get Biblical' on these maggots with an 'Eye For An Eye': The killer die the same way their victim(s) did; Stabbings, Gun shots, Strangulation, Poison, Torture, whatever. And as close as possible, the killer suffer the same amount of pain before dying, like if raped first, and take as long to die as the victim(s) did.
That would be the ultimate 'Equal Protection Under The Law' as delineated in the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Why not just hang them? It's cheap. You can re-use the rope. It's 100% effective. And it's constitutionally not "unusual puinishment" because it was the only mode of punishment when the Constitution was written.
The Russians feel that an inmate knowing when he is to be executed is cruel. When a group of guards show up with leather belts you know when your time is up. They strap the inmate to the bars and put a bullet in the back of their head. They say that the inmate doesn't have to think about it for long.

When Illinois still did the right thing for murderers, the drug cocktail performed identically to what they do to you when you need bypass surgery and put you on the heart lung machine. Deep sedation, paralysis and stop the heart. Only difference between execution and that surgery is they restart the heart (usually)

Firing squad or bullet in the back of the head is too personal, and too bloody. The left wants executions, if they happen at all, to be neat, clean, quiet and quick.
I vote for the guillotine. Energy efficient, fool-proof, allows harvesting of organs for transplant, but a little too quick.
I think murderers should suffer the same as they made their victims suffer. Maybe lay the condemned on his back rather than prone and do a few half drops of the blade before finally severing the head of the POS.
Bring back the firing squads and hanging tree. Once found guilty the inmate should have 30 days to appeal. Then proceed with the execution. The reason most of these fiends are not reluctant to commit their crimes is that it takes 15 to 20 years to get a resolution. In the Old West of Judge Roy Bean once he found you guilty you went right out the back door of the court house and hung.

The reason lethal injection is not working is that the drug companies are refusing to allow their drugs to be used in executions. Bad publicity, don't you know.
The state and feds seize enough Heroin and other drugs every year. Why not put them to use? How many times have you found an OD with the syringe still in the arm?

Since when did we forget about the rights of the victims, and the dreadful fate they suffered by the hands of the jafoff that gasped for air for 2 hours? why is this even news? Who cares about some murdering prick he got what he deserved, a slow death!
Why not just a huge overdose of morphine, dead within seconds and he won't be feeling any pain

Anyhow, firing squad is probably the most humane way to execute someone.
Also you could put death row inmates in a special cell with a floor that opens to an electrifed swimming pool. Think James Bond minus the electricity. Floor opens they plop into water.....
Then after they're shocked into unconsciousness/death another adjoining tank could be opened and hungry sharks could be let in.
I'm fairly sure it would be difficult to "botch" that execution.

I just don't see why the state does not reach into its evidence locker and pull out a few bags of heroin, especially if they have some laced with fentanyl. At least the guy would die with a smile on his face. And the state would not have to pay for the drugs. Its a win win.
