Got Some 'Splainin' To Do

Remember all those instances of CompStat falsifying crime numbers that Chicago Magazine uncovered? The City Council is going to have a hearing!
  • Back in late April, a few weeks after Chicago published the first article of our two-part investigation questioning the Chicago Police Department’s crime statistics, aldermen Scott Waguespack (32nd Ward) and Willie Cochran (20th Ward) introduced resolutions in the city council calling for hearings on the reliability of the department’s crime statistics. More than a third of the council’s 50 aldermen signed on to these resolutions.

So, what about that hearing? Interestingly, yesterday, with less than 48-hours notice, the council’s workforce development and audit committee and its public safety committee scheduled one for Friday morning.

We’ll be there. You can go, too; it’s open to the public. But don’t expect a real hearing.

It’ll be co-chaired by the mayor’s floor leader. It was scheduled at the 11th hour, for a Friday in August, when many aldermen aren’t around. And, according to the hearing notice, includes just one presenter: Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

In any case, here’s the info:
    Time: 10:00 a.m.
Place: City Council chambers, second floor of City Hall, 121 N LaSalle Street
Ah, one of THOSE hearings. Not one that gets to the bottom of anything. Just a "hearing" so that the City Council can say, "We looked into this, nothing to see here folks, move along!" That's so much easier than confronting Rahm about how his choice for supernintendo is lowering morale, lowering manpower, lowering city finances, lowering effectiveness across the board, lowering the perception that this is a safe big city, etc, etc

What a bunch of tools.

So, while Lollapalooza grabs all the headlines, this little 'hearing' will go nearly unreported. Shrewd. Very shrewd.

You might be surprised. At least one alderman sought input on questions from patrol officers. He does every time McTool has to take questions. Just doesn't make a big deal about it.

Anyone involved in the Glen Evans Witchhunt care to enlighten us SCC readers about the 'coincidence' of Rickey J. Williams being released from the joint tomorrow?

Rickey J. Williams, for those in the memory-challenged department, is the piece of shit that allegedly gave Evans' firearm a DNA sample.

Weird how this 'story' breaks right about the same time he's getting sprung from the pokey on unrelated charges.

What's also weird is how this incident coincides with the release of of the CR lists being published and the re telling of the SOS nonsense.

SCC - This July, at least 321 people caught lead (42 dead/279 wounded) vs last July's 256 (47 dead/209 wounded). Its' doubtful a 25% YoY jump in shootings will a mention. Instead, the talk will be about the 5 less homicides.

More lead, less dead.

Then, around 4:00pm today Tiny Dancer's office will release a statement that the City Council *investigated* the allegations made in Chicago Magazine and concluded they were, 'unfounded, and that Supt McClueless has 9.5's full support'.

CHICAGO (CBS) – Six aldermen want the City Council to encourage non-profits in Chicago to house and support migrant children who have fled violence in Central America and crossed the border into the U.S.

WBBM Newsradio’s John Cody reports Ald. Ariel Reboyras (30th) and Ald. Edward Burke (14th) introduced the resolution calling for Chicago charities to work with the Obama administration to find housing and support services for the migrant children.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel threw his support behind the plan, who said the city has the resources to provide shelter for 1,000 immigrant children, saying the city can’t ignore their plight.

“This speaks to who we are as a city in welcoming them,” he said.

Sony Biotechnology leaving University of Illinois
Posted: Aug 01, 2014 11:00 AM CST

CHAMPAIGN - A biotechnology-focused subsidiary of Sony Corporation is shutting down operations at the University of Illinois' Research Park and moving to California.

According to Sony spokeswoman Lisa Gephardt, Sony Biotechnology will close its campus office in September and will open a new headquarters in San Jose, California. Gephardt also said that employees were informed of the move on Wednesday, and that 12 of the 22 employees will have the chance to stay with the company. The other ten jobs will be eliminated.

Sony Biotechnology manufactures technology used in protein engineering and the counting and sorting of cells, and employed about 90 people at one point.

The company was founded as Cytometry Services Inc. in 1995, and moved to the University of Illinois in 2000. In 2010, the company was bought by Sony

A friend and I stopped at the McDonalds at Broadway and Granville tonight. We were eating at one of the outside tables when a black man approached the white guy at the next table and asked for 30 cents for some coffee. The white guy politely said no. Then he approached us and we politely said no. Then the black guy got nasty. He called the three of us WHITE TRASH and then yelled a few other threatening things. I was worried he was going to wait for us when we left McDonalds. Fortunately he did not.

So what am I supposed to do when a beggar says some racist threatening things to me and I feel endangered? Should I call the police? Would the police show up?

8 people killed over the July fourth weekend compared to 12 20 years ago? Try 16 dead in 2014, CBS. I'm also sure there weren't 82 people shot in that same time frame on the '94 weekend. Also Isn't chicagos population 2.5 mill? Didn't 200,000 lucky bastards flee the city, which made Toronto the 4th biggest city in North America? The most violent chicago neighborhoods today are also MORE violent than they were 20 years ago. The city overall is less violent, but the most violent neighborhoods from that era aren't. But Do they think people believe Or actually care what a stat says, when you can find 50 gang bangers from 20 years ago that will tell you " Chicago has gotten crazy"? It doesn't explain why residents in certain parts of the city hear a gunshot every night the same way they did 20 years ago. "Decent" residents in certain neighborhoods I mean. Not the ones who wreck havoc then jump on a " Chiraq" documentary and claim "we do dis cause we gots to".

I know (Call me crazy ) that it seems murders are way down (City didn't put up its usual July murder numbers, atleast between 50-65 is about normal) but shootings are indeed up. But what's up with the 3% increase in crime? Yet "people think crime is up 'cause the news is reporting it more". 'cause, well, ya know, crime in Chicago is a hot topic now and people want to know where the fuck they are gonna be robbed, shot, stabbed, when venturing off in to the city.

I stopped by one day and struck up a conversation with the developer. When I told him that I recently moved there from Illinois he asked me what was up with Illinois, why was everyone moving out of Illinois. I asked him what he was talking about. He then told me that the vast majority of people that purchased lots and signed a contract to build a home were from Illinois. Now as the homes are being built, all I see are cars with Illinois plates.

Anytime you endangered or threatened always call 911. Have your friend call 911. Keep calling even if the threat goes away. Demand a report from the officer, (assault simple) if we show up in a reasonable time. If you cannot wait, use callback or file online (I'm not sure how online works). If the assault continues do what they taught you in the CCW class. . ; -)

I have a question for the cops reading this.

You can call the police about the threatening panhandler.
But didn't ONE of you think to get up and walk into the store and tell the manager? Translation: if manager allows this to go on, customers will no longer spend their money here and business will suffer, so manager needs to address the problem.

Interesting report from Channel 2 TV news. Compares murders and aggravated battery/Assault 20 years ago to today. Might surprise some people. Even includes a trauma dr who states the trauma centers are getting less victims.

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/07/30/despite-media-coverage-chicago-violence-down-significantly-from-20-years-ago/"

Read the part where they talk about how the "news" treats these stories now vs. years ago. It's pretty clear that media sensationalism plays a big part in people's fears.

Exactly, 20 years ago the media wasn't on a campaign to play to peoples fears. The media wasnt out there to sensationalize all the crime. The 70's were alot more violent than now,it just wasn't reported the same or as quickly through more media outlets.

I retired and moved out of Chicago/Illinois a few months ago and one of the reps who came to give an estimate told me that they are so busy that they are closing off dates--unless you call way ahead, you will have trouble securing the moving date you want.

I asked him why they were so busy, and he said he has never seen so many people moving out of Illinois...he said he works Chicago and a 100 mile radius. He said nobody is moving INTO Illinois. I wonder what the stats show.

You are so full of B.S. If nobody is moving into Chicago than who the hell did you sell your house to. And a "REP" gave you an estimate?
Get the F off the blog.
Retirement becomes official in two weeks. House sold six weeks after putting it on the market. Estimate went smooth. Closing is on schedule .

Funny how some retirees try to make everything into the way they see it. The housing market in Chicago isnt flooded with for sale properties. I'm surprised he didnt say the roads werent wearing out with all the people fleeing Chicago.
Maybe the "rep" was trying to charge him more because there were no trucks available.

In 1970 we had about 3,369,359....in 2014 we have about
2,695,598…...about 675 thousand less people in Chicago. Sure murders are down......less people to kill and more survive because of better medical care.
Spin that! Can someone compare the numbers?

Sure can. Population down 20% murders almost double in the 70's
In 1974 970 murders. 1970 810 murders

Saw it and just kept wondering the whole time how they rigged the numbers.

My guess would be magic. The media really wants to downplay the murders in Chicago NOT Some people just don't or won't believe, if the facts don't suit their agenda. I'msure those reporters spent all that time trying to "rig the numbers"

I would not be so quick to call someone a liar if I were you. I recently retired and now live in a neighboring state. There is a brand new subdivision being built near my home.

That's 1,000 extra gangbangers. Thanks Rahm and Obama.

A city taxpayer

8/01/2014 07:26:00 PM<<<

Remember this was planned well in advance, contractors were recruited to transport these invaders the interior of our country long before we heard about it. These invaders were coached as to what to say when they got to the border to get refugee status.

But what I think will happen now is that Hispanic gangs here will take some of there narco-money and funnel through the local Rev-runds here to buy (recruit) these invaders. It will be almost like a slave market.

Remember this and VOTE.

Wow, Illinoians buying summer homes in Wisconsin, what a great idea.
Point is, if you sell your home, someone is buying it. So, you may be moving out, but someone is moving in.
Unlike businesses in Illinois. They are moving out without the jobs and tax base being replaced.
The city can survive vacant homes, but it cannot survive the loss of jobs and the taxes generated by manufacturing jobs.

The homes being bought in Wisconsin by former Illinois residents are NOT summer homes. These people like me, have given up on Chicago/Illinois are taking their families elsewhere for a better lifestyle. And believe me, it is a better lifestyle.
