Merrillville Officer Succumbs to Wounds

  • Merrillville Police Officer Nickolaus Schultz, 24, was taken off life support Sunday morning, less than two days after he was shot in the head while responding to a call.

Robert Byrd, spokesman for the Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force, said Schultz’s family “graciously made the decision to make him an organ donor.” He was pronounced dead at 9:47 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Byrd said Schultz was surrounded by family while he was on life support.

Schultz was shot by 33-year-old Michael Hrnciar about 10:45 p.m. Friday at Tempe Lake Condominiums, in the 8200 block of Lincoln Circle, where he and another officer were responding to a call about an unwanted individual in a vacant condo.
Just over a year on the job, 24-years-old. That is far too young to be taken from us in such a manner.

Godspeed Officer Schultz.

Prayers and sympathies for the Officer, his family and his Department only in this thread please.

This one was very sad. Saw their police chief an the news. He said if he had 100 candidates for the job, he'd want them all to be like Officer Schultz. He sounded like he was a real nice kid. What a shame.

To the Merriville Police Department and this young officers family: My heart bleeds for all of you, I survived this police job for over 30 years before retiring and now I have a young son out there doing this job, Your loved one was taken much to early by a senseless act delivered by a crazed person, I hope that all of you think of the good, kind person that Nick was and that his soul shines on forever. May GOD carry his life on always. Retired Chicago Police Sgt.

I often tell people their loved one is gone because he or she has accomplished what they were put on this earth to do, and now it's time for them to graduate and move on.
In this case, I just don't GET it. A genuinely good person, just taken. So terribly sad.

A knock on the door, but no one was there. A knock on the door, and the voice said "I'm here with you, don't feel alone, done feel lost, I came to find you and bring you home". Don't Worry About Your family, And Loved ones, They Will Join Us Soon enough, For IN My house, There Is A Place For Everyone Who Will Share It With me" It Was That I Realized That My Eyes Did Not Close But opened, And I Was finally, home, At peace". Be safe brother and guide us soon, say hello to my friend Flash, he knows his way around up there.

"Cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."....Not usually given to scripture...but there, but for the grace of God go I...or you...or any of us! Yes, I went to the door, far away, and I said that and I went and found someone and I brought them home as soon as I could...did not leave them there in the cold among strangers.

Had to find and make a new home almost overnight...but I went out alone and I got them here.

Don't whup yourself listening to people who tell you "It's over." Not in a month, not in a year...not ever.

...but we go on somehow.
