Coppers Injured

  • An Illinois State Trooper conducting a traffic stop was critically injured and seven other people were hurt this afternoon on Interstate 294 near west suburban Berkeley when a driver hit the trooper and tried to flee, officials said.

The collision occurred about 2:46 p.m. on I-294 northbound, when a state trooper was hit by a passing vehicle during a traffic stop near St. Charles Road, Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said in an email. The state trooper, who is 28, was taken to an area hospital and remains in critical condition, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Best wishes to the trooper for a speedy recovery.

And an Indiana copper is fighting for his life:
  • A Merrillville police officer is in critical condition and a man is dead after officers and the man exchange gunfire Friday night in the Northwest Indiana community, according to police.

The incident, which started about 10:45 p.m. Friday when a resident of the townhomes just south of U.S. Route 30 and west of Broadway Avenue called 911 to report a man nearby who wasn't supposed to be there, police said.

In a release from the Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force, police were sent to the Temple Lake Condominiums, in the 8200 block of Lincoln Circle, after receiving an "unwanted party" call. A man had moved back into a condominium from which he had been evicted in July, and shots were fired as police conducted an investigation after arriving at the scene.

The 33-year-old man, who police said was wearing bullet-resistant body armor, and officers exchanged shots, according to the release, and the man was killed. He was identified by the Lake County coroner's office as Michael Hrnciar, of the 8200 block of Lincoln Circle. The coroner's office said Hrnciar committed suicide.

The officer was identified in the release as Nickolaus Schultz, a 24-year-old who had been with the Merrillville Police Department for one year. Schultz was transported in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a single gunshot wound to the head.
Prayers for the Officer, his family and his coworkers.

Prosecutors: Woman hit grandfather with branch, robbed him at knifepoint

"A West Woodlawn woman robbed her disabled grandfather, hitting him with a tree branch and putting a knife to his throat before stealing $150, his car keys and the deed to his house, prosecutors said today.

"Lateefah Williams, 37, is charged with armed robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle, armed home invasion and violating an order of protection in the incident Friday. Williams was ordered held in lieu of 500,000 bail in a hearing in Cook County Bond Court before Judge Laura Sullivan.

"Williams' 89-year-old grandfather recently suffered a stroke and has been staying in a rehabilitation facility, when he was dropped off at his house around 4 p.m. Friday to pick up clothes to take back to the facility, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Hain.

"Williams, who lives on the floor above her grandfather in the of the 6500 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, snuck into his apartment with her boyfriend, hit her grandfather with a tree branch and demanded money, prosecutors said. When he denied having money, she put a large pocket knife to his throat.

"Her grandfather then gave Williams the keys to a file cabinet, where she found $150, the deeds to his house and car, the keys to his car and his social security card, all of which she took, prosecutors said.

"Williams and her boyfriend then left through the front door and drove away in her grandfather's car...."

Only thing that surprises me is that she didn't drag Grandpa out back and leave him under a bush for the hyenas.

Now she put on her DOC blues and march out to slop-tray breakfast with the hos in CCJ, round about 5 AM...

Fried-up bologna picked out of the trash from yesterday. Coffee made with one teaspoonful instant per gallon of lukewarm water. No sugar -- it's all stolen to make hooch.

Enjoy yo repast.

OT: SCC, do you want to address this recent BS PAX 501 by McCarthy where he reiterates the news release by the US Attorneys Office that there is no pattern or practice investigation into the CPD by the Feds? It seems to me to be classic misdirection - our claim is that the Feds are looking at very specific shooting incidents. My take on all the protests by McCarthy and the Feds is that they indeed ARE looking at these shootings.

Fuck McCarthy, fuck the Feds, and don't ever, EVER talk to an FBI agent. Note to the district officers working with the FBI and ATF on gangs - the first time you even mention doing something a little off-center, you're screwed.

the woman who hit the trooper was arrested earlier this year for DUI and driving on a suspended license. She needs to go to prison asap.
See below:

Leslie W. Thurow, 59, of the 700 block of Hamlin, Park Ridge, was charged with DUI alcohol following a collision with a parked vehicle at Fairview and Park avenues at 10:39 a.m. May 28. Police noticed an odor of alcohol on Thurow's breath when questioned. She was also charged with driving while license suspended, illegal transportation of alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

He is young and has much more life ahead of him. I too have a young son who is a police officer and I look to God every day he leaves and goes to work!!!!!

Marked "OT," "off-topic" -- and when it gets late and we're tired we sometimes forget exactly what thread we're in. No disrespect intended.

"Rest in peace, Merrillville officer Nickolaus Shultz, age 24. May heaven open its arms to you."

Yes Sir, same sentiment here. Heard earlier that the officer did not survive his terrible wound. All over some lousy condo spat. Offender dead too, what did he get out of it. Senseless.

Prayers and best wishes to the officer's family, friends, and colleagues. So sorry.

God bless all here. Stay safe.

Merrillville officer dies after being shot by man who later committed suicide

"A Merrillville police officer who was shot Friday night by a man who later committed suicide has died...

"Nickolaus Schultz, 24, was taken off life-support and pronounced dead at 9:47 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn...

"Schultz, a Lowell, Ind., resident, had been transported in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a single gunshot wound to the head.

"The incident started about 10:45 p.m. Friday when a resident of the town homes just south of U.S. Route 30 and west of Broadway Avenue called 911 to report a man nearby who wasn't supposed to be there...

"...police were sent to the Temple Lake Condominiums, in the 8200 block of Lincoln Circle, after receiving an "unwanted party" call. The 33-year-old man was identified by the Lake County coroner's office as Michael Hrnciar, of the 8200 block of Lincoln Circle. The coroner's office said Hrnciar committed suicide.

"Schultz was an organ donor, Byrd said, adding that the Indiana State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police is working with the Merrillville Police Department to prepare for the funeral for Schultz, who had joined the department in July of 2013.

"Schultz studied criminal justice/sociology at Franklin College, a small liberal arts school about 20 miles south of Indianapolis and graduated two months earlier. While at Franklin, Schultz was a three-year starter on the college football team, said Franklin Head Football Coach Mike Leonard.

"While a senior he served as captain of the team and was also named to the Division III All-American team by d3football.com.

"He was a leader and he was definitely the leader by example," said Leonard, who is in his 12th year as coach. "He was unselfish, hard-working and didn't need recognition, that was Nick's personality."

"Schultz played left guard for three years on the offensive line and Leonard believes that Schultz knew early on that he wanted to be a police officer.

"The same qualities that made Schultz, who was known as "Nick" a star offensive line player also helped make him a good police officer. Leonard said he was not surprised to hear that Schultz was the first officer to respond to Friday's incident.

"Nick was on the front-line on the football field, he was in the trenches, doing the grunt work no one wants to do," said Leonard. "As a police officer I think that mentality fit perfectly. I knew Nick was on the front line when he was the first in the door."

"We will miss him greatly," said Leonard. "It's a tragedy but we believe something good is going to happen based on how he led his life."
