Detectives Made

One hundred detectives made last night.

That's the first class in what? Six years?

Congratulations to those who made it. It's been a long time coming and the D-unit could use the help.

Post it if you got it.

UPDATE: Second class in six years or so - we forgot the one they threw together last year.

What a shame it takes so long to be promoted after a test.

When I took the test for detective, I believe it was in the spring or early summer, we got our grades before leaving Wells H.S.

The list was posted in the newspaper and I was in detective's school in October and I was not even in the first class.

Congratulations to all promoted it's the best job on the Police Department, at least it used to be.

We're hearing all kinds of horror stories about how they are bouncing white applicants off the candidate list. There are stories about miscounting sit-ups and flat out lying about the run times. They won't count the sit-ups out loud but after the 2 min is up they will say "sorry, that was only (one less then passing) because the rest didn't count, you unlaced your fingers...."
One candidate was told he missed the run by 3 seconds. He had his own Fitbit stopwatch showing he made it by 25 seconds. The proctor said "MY stopwatch is the one that counts" and said "thanks for coming, better luck next time"

Try walking one block from your home under the Orange line tracks and towards Curie H.S YOU CAN'T!!

Try walking on the other side of the street south from the Orange line to Jewel foods pass the "Super Mercardo Giganta (the 5200 block S Pulaski) YOU CAN'T

YOU CAN'T BECAUSE YOUR GLORIOUS BUSINESS OWNERS HAVEN'T TOUCHED THE SIDEWALKS SINCE THE SNOW BEGAN TO FALL.

Get off your ass and park your motorcade and bring Rahm with you.

Walk the street a-holes.

I used this language as it's what the mayor is accustom to and if he can dish it out it shouldn't be offensive to you all and you certainly can take it.

After all it's your leader setting the "Broken Windows" like standard of what's acceptable behavior. A fine example FOR THE CHILDREN

Meanwhile, when is all this crap from peoples garages used as dib holders going to be hauled away.!?

We got buckets and lawn chairs and boards and various other items in the streets. It's a safety hazard.

Law to Let Multiemployer Pensions Cut Benefits Signed
Measure addresses withdrawal liability; clarifies ERISA Section 4062(e) rules
By Stephen Miller, CEBS 12/15/2014
Permissions

updated 12/18/2014

Severely distressed multiemployer pensions will be able to reduce benefits paid to retirees under an amendment to the Continuing Resolution/omnibus spending bill (dubbed "cromnibus") that was signed into law by President Barack Obama on Dec. 16, 2014. H.R. 83, the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2015, had been approved by the U.S. Senate on Dec. 13, two days after House passage.

The pension measure included in the omnibus legislation, the Multiemployer Pension Reform Act of 2014, was negotiated by a bipartisan group of congressional leaders but opposed by some retiree advocates and their congressional allies. It is intended to let deeply underfunded multiemployer plans avoid bankruptcy and termination, and by doing so to keep solvent the multiemployer pension insurance fund overseen by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. (PBGC), the federal pension insurance program.

The provisions apply only to multiemployer pensions and not to single-sponsor corporate pensions, which are subject to a different set of regulations and higher funding-level requirements. The PBGC maintains a separate insurance fund for single-sponsor pensions. Multiemployer, or "Taft-Hartley," pension plans commonly are administered by labor unions on behalf of their members and funded by multiple employers in a given industry, subject to collective bargaining contracts with the union.

As SHRM Online recently reported (see Multiemployer Pension Funding Crisis Looms), in November 2014 the PBGC issued a report indicating its multiemployer insurance program was almost certain to become insolvent in 10 years. Of the 1,400 multiemployer plans nationwide, 200 plans covering a total of 1 million participants are at risk of termination.

Cutback Provisions

The measure will allow trustees of financially troubled multiemployer pensions to cut retiree benefits to prevent plan insolvency. Financially troubled plans are those that are expected to not have enough money to pay 100 percent of benefits in 10 to 20 years. In some cases, the cuts could exceed 60 percent of a participant’s benefits.

Under the measure:

• Retirees who are age 80 or over, or are receiving a disability pension, are not subject to benefit cuts. Retirees ages 75-79 are subject to smaller cuts than retirees under age 75.

• Plan trustees have discretion in deciding how to allocate the cuts. For example, they can cut retirees’ benefits more than those of active workers, and decide whether to reduce survivors’ benefits.

• Plan trustees are exempt from fiduciary responsibility in making cuts.

• Trustees’ decisions to cut benefits can be reversed only by the Department of Treasury, and then only if the Treasury determines that the trustees’ decision to cut benefits or the extent of the benefit cuts is “clearly erroneous.”

• There is no provision for automatic restoration of lost benefits if a plan’s funding status improves.

• Plans with 10,000 or more participants must allow all participants to vote on cuts before they are implemented. A majority of all workers and retirees in a plan—not just a majority of the ones who vote—is required to block cuts. Ballots can be distributed by e-mail.

• Even if a majority of participants vote against cuts, the Treasury Department can override the vote and uphold the trustees’ decision to make cuts, if it concludes that a plan poses a “systemic” risk to the PBGC.

• The insurance premiums that multiemployer plans pay to the PBGC are increased from $13 to $26 per participant per year. (In contrast, premiums paid to the single-employer plan program are between $57 and $475 per participant per year.)

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

If history is an indicator you are dead wrong. A test hasn't even been announced yet. Every test and every promotion always has a class after the test has been given before the results show up. This test will be no different. No test even in the works yet so no way they can hold off for another 2+ years without hiring. A ton of dics from the 85,86, and 87 mass hiring classes will be retiring this year. Nice try. Don't have sour grapes because you're too far on the list to make it. Try try again

A comment from someone who does not have a clue on what detectives have to face to solve crimes today. Thanks to numerous law suits their hands are tied. And, as I understand, the clearance rate is no better in other major cities.

Best job in the dept! Lolol. You're crazy if you believe that. Most responsibility in this god forsaken dept. Liberal lawmakers making this job next to impossible. Try to get into homicide if you can. 10 to maybe 12 cases a year per dic and that may be stretching it. RBT? 200 to 300 a year per dic at least in a busy district with tons of arrests/processings. Welcome to a demotion with a raise. Only perks! No radio and lunch wherever you want.

There's too much misinformation on this thread.

There's been two classes made since December 2012. One was about 75 and the other about 40-50.

The test was given in December of 2004 making the list slightly over 10 years old and the lowest seniority anywhere in the detective division is 13 years.

That being said, congratulations to all of you that had 3 bars on your sleeve in patrol and thought you were hot shit. You're now back in the bottom 4th in seniority.

Tell me if this sounds reasonable:

I have been rattling my brains trying to come up with a logical reason why Superintendent McCarthy was brought in to Chicago. He was soundly dismissed in his last try because of his personality and spouted of like a child when he wasn't considered.

Years later, he is put in as Superintendent and acts like the megalomaniac he truly is. He keeps spouting off about fundamentally changing the Department and has made some very bizarre decisions, takes no input from his Chiefs and keeps the Department in the dark as to what he is trying to do with the Department organization.

McCarthy harps on the murder rate like it is the only thing that matters. In his world it is the only thing.

I submit the McCarthy is the smokescreen that will hide the glaring fact that concealed carry will reduce the crime rate in Chicago. McCarthy has declared, to anyone that will listen, that COMPSTAT has reduced homicides and crime in Chicago when any copper knows they were heading that way anyway. I believe any competent supervisor around when McCarthy was hired would have ushered in a better reduction in crime and officers would be more engaged and more satisfied. Happy employees are productive employees.

Chicago's reduction in crime will be heralded as a COMPSTAT success when the real reason will be concealed carry. Slick move by the progressives that didn't want you to have guns.

Look over here!!! Quiet a magic act.

And if you did get it meritorious but are a hard worker and knowledgeable copper then what? Love all the merit haters. Im still a blue shirt but I know many dics, sgts etc who made it merit who are phenomenal guys, supervisors and detectives. Obviously, then you have the merit HACKS, which is a whole other catagory in itself. Not all merit picks are bad. Ive found that its so unpopular because somebody else made it and they didnt. Listen, if you did terrible on the test and you DONT work and NEVER have worked then sorry, you dont deserve merit. Unfortunatly, the merit process is supposed to be to award hard workers who didnt do good. But this is the chicago police department. Where merit is used to get in that secretary, or the aldermans guy etc. Not all are merit hacks by any means but yes I will never deny that the merit hacks dont exist.. we all know they are plentiful.. even a few on this list I can see. But if you did bad on the test, are a worker and good guy and would be a good detective or supervisor then good for you. Those are the people we want for merit. Do we really want all 25 percent of the merit picks to be hacks??? No, if we can squeeze a few good one in there then thats fine with me. Too many people out there hating the players instead of the game.

For those saying "too bad" for those that are still waiting, get over it. That list should have been replaced 5-6 years ago at the most, but they drag this all out. 10 damn years. Great for those that made it, can't take anything away, but this needs to move on and people need some fresh opportunities for some kind of movement or advancement.

The Det Div lost over 25 Dets to Sgt promotion including a couple of people who were in Det school who made Sgt before they finished Det school; making the last class of Dets equal about 10 and I think that it was actually lower than that.

2/10/2015 09:05:00 AM

Counting the responses for the first "make more ETs" comment". The ETs brought it on themselves. Never have I seen such an assemblage of dogs and prima donnas in one unit. Granted, a lot of them have since gone, but you reap what you sow. Do more with less and handle the jobs. Better still, privatize like a lot of other depts. nationwide.

2/10/2015 06:42:00 AM

Privatizing saves no money. Taxpayers still pay for the services. It's a fallacy that privatization is the answer. Just look at all the money private prisons, parking meters and DOA removal services make, just to name a few. City and State still pay for the services, and enforcement etc but can't employ anyone. Off subject but very important. President Obama Signs the Multiemployer Pension Reform Act H R 83 of 2014. The law enables your pension officers to reduce or suspend your pension if they can show it is critically underfunded. WTF did anyone know about this. This could be Rahm's ace in the hole. Does anyone know about this? Is this still America?

2/10/2015 07:44:00 AM

It refers to "Multiempoyler"

Multiemployer, or "Taft-Hartley," pension plans commonly are administered by labor unions on behalf of their members and funded by multiple employers in a given industry, subject to collective bargaining contracts with the union. - See more at: http://www.shrm.org/hrdisciplines/benefits/articles/pages/multiemployer-pension-payouts.aspx#sthash.8hLaGeA8.dpuf

http://www.shrm.org/hrdisciplines/benefits/articles/pages/multiemployer-pension-payouts.aspx

2/10/2015 10:05:00 AM

Refers to private not public:

The MPRA also provides additional authority to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), the government insurer of private defined benefit pension plans, to take certain actions to assist critical status multiemployer pension plans.

Mayberry RFD is not that far off the mark.

There are many very small rural village, town and county sheriff departments where there is only one full time law enforcement officer with maybe a few part time deputies. I used to travel cross country on my motorcycle and in such place the police station is a door on the side of the town hall and nobody’s there. In the pre-cell phone days there would be a list of local phone numbers to call if you needed help. There may be two state cops in a big county they can call for help, one working days and one nights.

A "sworn officer" is trained and sworn to an oath of office to uphold the law and has the powers of arrest versus an employee or volunteer who might handle phones, radio or paperwork.

Stay Safe. Never put down the backwoods or backwater cops because people can get just as stupid and hit just as hard as they do here and their backup may be a long way off.

Welcome to long hours, tons of overtime, constant court, no sleep, typing until your eyes bleed and your fingers go numb, and a family that doesn't know who you are anymore. Congratulations! Best job in the department my ass.

-----//

Ha! That's funny (and so not true) with the ex workin about being the best spot in the dept- that's totally true!

Listen son, the OT is there if you want it, most guys don't but I made over $150k last year and I also made every family function, I was home a lot and I work days! Yes, some days you get hammered, but this job is nothing like private industry!

Here's my suggestion to new Dets:
1. Take the first 20hrs on the books no matter what!
2. Make a lot of $$$ each period (60-80 hrs)
3. Start a Roth IRA
4. Start a Fidelity account
5. Remember to take a day off once in awhile ( if you're not a jagoff you will get taken care of) and hang wit the people that love you
6. Don't let this job run your life, make it work for you
7. Don't forget about steps 1,3, and 4.

Lts & Sgts to be made soon. Sgts possibly off of old list.

2/10/2015 06:47:00 PM
-------------------------------------------

The old Sgt. list is just that old, if they make Sgt. It will be off the new list. That's why they gave a new test, to get a new list.

2/11/2015 08:21:00 AM

&&&&&&&&. Will you guys stop commenting on this guys nonsense. In sure he just missed the last class from the old list.. He's bitter and wants to make people on the new list nervous because if he can't make Sgt nobody should. Listen, the old list is gone! It's never coming back. If there is a new class from here on out it will be from the new list... Even wonderboy posting about the old list can't change that.

There should not even be merit for dicks. I can understand sgt. but not detectives. Congrats to all the new dicks either way.

$$&&&&&&&

See, you're wrong about this. Dog asses don't want to be detectives.. They want to be sgts. Detectives have a lot of work to do and a ton of court. It's my experience that the majority of merit dics have usually been hard workers and have turned out to be great detectives. Merit dics and merit supervisors is a whole different game.

I'm not white and 20 years ago if you unlaced your fingers it didn't count and yes the only clock that counts is the proctors. I saw white black and brown fail.

2/11/2015 12:32:00 AM
Here's the problem, the proctor counts in his head not out loud. After the 2 minutes he spits out a number and that's it. If he at least counted out loud you would know that it wasn't counted and you might "adjust" your fingers or go further back but to not tell you so you can adjust is wrong. The same with the magic stopwatch. How can it be that far off from your personal stopwatch. A few seconds maybe I can see. A half a minute. I don't think so.

There are a lot of worthy meritorious Officers out there. Officers that have maybe done that one thing, or maybe has been a hard worker their whole career and they re a shitty test taker. There are many reasons. Yes, there are merit hacks, What about the officer shot or seriously injured in the line of duty? What about the officers that came up with the info who helped catch a Cop killer? There are many reasons.

So don't worry people go out and do your job because when its time to take care of you McGoofy has your back..LMAO

I read this and had to respond....Del Pearson is the man I believe you are referring to. He did not have the time to take the last Detective Test or Sergeant Test. He did take this last Sergeant test but for some reason the Department made 149 Sergeant's off the "old list" which he is not on. Somehow some other people were far more "meritoriously deserving." Why promote 149 people off a test or list that is almost 10 years old when the new test results were about to be released? Clout of course is the answer, not merit. Yeah the department really takes care of you.

I think that SCC was right in stating first class in 6 years. The last class in April 2014 can out at a -7 total when you counted the number of 40 in that class. The two Sgt. classes that were in the academy at the same time the Det class was there totaled 47 Detectives who made Sgt. Even before they hit the streets, they were down Sgt.

Hmmm... let me break it down for you in simple mathematical terms. I was in the class that entered the academy in December of 2012. It is now 2015. 2015-2012= WAIT FOR IT.... 3. There has been another class since mine. So that's 2 classes within the last 3 years and this current one will make the third. So you can think SCC is right but he wasn't. SCC is right about a lot of things and I love his blog, but he made a small mistake about the time frame which may even have been a typo. Judging by your writing skills though, I can understand how you failed 1st grade math.

Hey SCC - A bit off-topic here:

Just saw a factoid on PBS NewsHour which claimed "Over half of all police departments in the U.S. contain less than 10 sworn officers". That smells like b.s. to me.

Can anyone explain the difference between a "sworn officer" and the rest of the department ?

(I know nobody can explain the difference between journalism and PBS)

2/10/2015 06:46:00 PM

Ahhh, never been OUTSIDE Crook County huh? Dumbass......

2/11/2015 12:04:00 PM

Why call this guy a dumbass, that was probably written by some kid and may not even have a driver license yet and been outside of Cook County much.

The reasonable reply: There are about 40,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States. The largest municipal department is the New York City with about 40,000 sworn officers for a population of almost eight million.

There are also many towns and villages with populations of 500, 1,000, or 10,000 who have a police department that may only have ten full-time officers or less. Be careful driving through small towns, some of those towns support themselves by speed traps.

Want to check on SPEED TRAPS:

http://www.speedtrap.org/speedtraps/stetlist.asp

Also a sworn officer has taken an oath and has certified police powers such as arrest. Other employees may be non-sworn clerks, dispatchers and lock-up keepers.

JOURNALISM is the documentation, reporting and publishing of news and human interest stories to the public by whatever means used, newspapers, magazines, TV or radio.

PBS is PUBLIC BROADCASTIN SYSTEM is television and radio programing that is supported by viewers and philanthropic organizations.

Pretty crappy answer to a reasonable question. Police Officers are those that have taken an oath and are sworn to uphold the laws of their jurisdiction, simple answer. Everyone else in a police department are non-sworn employees. They don't carry guns and have no more arrest powers than citizens. They may have authority to issue tickets, such as parking enforcement, but not arrest powers. There are many small communities that have only one or two sworn officers and rely on the county sheriff for the bulk of their support. I'm not surprised by the number given.
