Good News of a Sort
Well, not really good, but it lessens the impact of some bad news:
- Police are asking for help in finding the driver of a dark-colored SUV that apparently struck a 60-year-old man and fled shortly before an unmarked police car hit the same pedestrian on an unlit South Chicago street early Wednesday.
The wanted SUV was traveling eastbound in the 2800 block of East 79th Street when it hit Kevin D. Garrett around 1:10 a.m., according to a Chicago police alert.
About five minutes later, an unmarked police car also struck Garrett. Police initially said that the man was hit only by the police car.
So the driver of the unmarked is almost certainly blameless in that no one expects a body to be lying in a darkened street during a major snowstorm.

Yeah...
Cuz you know the catered to constituents were going to start their shit if the inconvenient fact that he had been hi already hadn't come out.
You know...
The usual...
"Po-leece always in arra comunerty killin' up black mens fo no reason!"
Watch one of these sad, sorry-assed ambulance chasers to file a "give us money an' we'll go away" lawsuit on behalf of the estate of the deceased if:
A. They don't catch the driver of the initial striking vehicle.
B. They DO catch him/her/it and they DON'T have insurance.
This is STILL Chicago after all...
Right?
Hahaha. The driver of the squad is blameless you say?? Hasenpheffer I say!!! Never you mind about the man in the dark colored suv. The officer and his partner along with the city are the only two parties to blame here.. Signed, loevy and loevy
Some of the comments on the Trib's website were so ignorant that it was sickening. Hopefully, the p.o. driving that night is ok. It's a crappy situation.
Regardless, my prayers are with all the coppers involved who have to live with this tragedy the rest of their lives.
Bodies lie all over the street in the ghetto. Some are dead. Some are not.
Well, this is good news for the officer. At least he knows he wasn't really at fault.
But unless there's more info on that SUV I doubt they'll get the driver. The odds of the guy turning himself in are pretty slim, and unless one of his homies has a beef with him (or also knows the victim) no one in Da Hood will be dropping a dime on him.
Though there is always 'luck'. That some Body Shop will call the police if an SUV like that was brought in for front-end repairs. Repairs done 'on the QT', and in cash.
"I thought that was a speed bump".
The city will still be making out that Ghetto Lottery check to the victim's family. Doesn't matter how many civilian cars ran over this guy. The city car is the jackpot.
