Squad Accident
- A man was struck and killed by an unmarked Chicago police squad car in the city's South Chicago neighborhood overnight.
The man was walking east in the 2800-block of East 79 th Street around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday when he was struck by the car. He was pinned underneath and had to be extricated by emergency crews. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"He was wearing black clothing. And he was looking out for the bus trying to see if the bus was coming. And that's the point when the car came out and hit him, as soon as he was looking out for the bus," Tareon Hardin, who saw the incident from his window, said.
Witnesses also said the street lights in the area have been out for several days.
No manpower to fix the lights. Plows driving around "blades up." Sporadic shoveling of the ghetto sidewalks. A copper who's going to be having nightmares for the rest of their life. And of course, the dead guy who was just looking for a bus.

we've been assigned to that area for 3 weeks for the robbery problems they've been having. Those lights on 79th have been out for the entire time. It was just a matter of time until someone got hit.
I guarantee no one gives a shit on that piece of garbage Street. Dopers from exchange to Yates and the vri and foot patrol just allow them to deal right under there noses.
I love it when these morons stand in the middle of the street looking for the bus. Like it's gonna come faster. Hey dummy you how you tell when the bus is there? When it pulls in front of you and the damn doors open. The ghetto is the only place I have ever seen people do this. Natural selection at its finest.

The same theory applies when you are waiting for an elevator. The more you push the button, the faster it comes.
Is it illegal to look if the bus is coming?
I understand the street lights were out and he was out looking for the bus but since when don't you pay attention to the road. If the weather conditions are as bad as they have been in chicago then shouldn't drivers travel at a speed at which they can safely navigate their vehicle? Everyone is quick to call the pedestrian a POS
Let's blame the guy that can't drive because rahms cameras gave them illegal tickets and now they have to take the bus.
The suburbs have longer yellow lights than the city! Why give the suburbs a chance to slow down with proper notice and NOT Chicago residents.

To the City, was the "victim's" blood alcohol and drug screening performed? Was he intoxicated or high and jumped in front of the car like they do in Russia! And please give cooper's better tires (no bald tires) and vehicle's. Clear the streets (remove those stupid speed bumps) and make sure the street lights are working for our seniors and FOR THE CHILDREN! U KNOW THE ONES THAT THM RED LIGHT CAMERAS ARE PROCTECTING FROM 6AM - 1100 PM 7 DAYS A WEEK!

There is no more Bureau Of Electricity, right? I think this got "outsourced" in another Daley side deal to a company called "City Lights." Great big very dark blue trucks. Even looks furtive. Saw them putting in some new lights somewhere once, and have not seen another one of those trucks for YEARS. Ever.
...and give a kick to the base of those fancy black "antique" "cast iron"-looking street lights sometime. The base is actually two thin pot metal die castings, held on there with a few plastic zip ties.
A lot of the time, people have to walk in the street because it's been plowed, while the sidewalks are just impassable, like Mt. Everest or something. So many businesses that don't care, and so many "FOR SALE - FOR LEASE" vacant buildings and the real estate firm or bank holding them will never, ever clear those walks.
...but you're supposed to come running on a "possible open door."
It appears that the person was already lying in the street before the police even made contact with him.

I wish I was a personal injury attorney. This case looks like a slam dunk, and the city is going to have to pay BIG!!!! Maybe the city should have spent a few bucks to repair the street lights.
Well, looks like another 6 figure settlement to the family we're on the hook for as taxpayers...

Actually the person was already ran over by at least two vehicles prior to the CPD vehicle hitting him. The victim was laying in the roadway presumably dead from being struck by the other vehicles.

Police have a video of the victim being struck by a car before the police car came upon the scene. So it appears that the police car did not hit him.

I feel bad for the guy killed and his family. Don't forget the officers either. Nobody ever wants to go to work and have to kill somebody on purpose during an armed confrontation And especially somebody not deserving in a car accident like this. A truly tragic event for all involved. I'm sure they can't be feelin too good right now. There will be a lawsuit and it might make the officers nervous or have anxiety.. Please don't. Just tell yourself the truth.. It was an accident. Don't feel you have to lie. Tell your attorney that yes you hit him and it was a terribly tragic accident that you couldn't avoid and you feel awful about it. It's the truth and its 100 percent more believable than any lie or cover story that could ever be told.. Not that it's happening in this case I'm just saying. Be honest, be truthful. You will see that it takes all your stress away and will give you nothing to worry sbout. They will get paid because no lights on the street and the case will eventually go away. Don't stress and just try to heal your heart and mind from this. U will be much happier going into this by keeping yourself honest.

Pulaski south of 111th is notorious for people who look a little"off" to walk into traffic while waiting for a bus. I blasted my horn at one the other day as I swerved to avoid him. Maybe they're waiting for the kenwood Liquor express or going to Christ Hospital, but you can tell they're not right.
