- The Siberian Express that’s imported northern Russia’s weather into North America is leading to a second year of fast-growing ice cover on the Great Lakes, setting up the Chicago area for the possibility of another cool spring.
By Wednesday, the Great Lakes were 85.4 percent ice-covered, just above the 85.2 percent on Feb. 18 last year, according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. With below-average temperatures predicted for at least the next week, the lakes could approach last year’s levels of 92.5 percent ice cover, the second-highest level since records began in the early 1970s.
It’s far from the only factor in spring weather, but a heavy and late ice season can lead to a cooler spring—and even a cooler summer, forecasters say.
Cooler Spring and cooler Summer? Count us in. This global warming shit ain't half bad.

It not global warming. Its called climate change and its real.
The permafrost in Northern Canada is melting at an alarming rate. That permafrost used to block much of the arctic air from coming into the US.
With that permafrost continuing to melt, expect more extreme cold arctic blasts.
Dont believe me? Look this stuff up for yourself. Its amazing how many people have their head in the sand when it comes to image change.
Today Anchorage, Alaska was 36 degrees.. And what was the temperature in Chicago???? I rest my case.
Please give me a wake-up call when I can safely hike across the ice to Berrien County, Michigan while avoiding the State of Indiana.
global warming is just a term. It's really climate change. If you laugh off climate change then you should just bury your head in the sand and wait for the world to crumble. In chicago today it was -8 degrees. In southwest Alaska it was 46 degrees and has been in the 40s since Sunday. Fairbanks was 36 today and in the mid 30s above freezing all week. The average temperature for everyday in February historically in Fairbanks Alaska is about -1 degrees. The rest of the week looks to remain in the 30s. Just because it's cold here doesn't mean there is no "global warming". The earths temperature is getting warmer which is causing climate change. It's February and Alaskan ice is melting... Just because we all tend to be conservative here doesn't mean we have to side with republicans with everything. They ignore climate change because of oil and energy interests. I'm a republican and conservative but they are dead wrong on the environment. We are killing this earth and it is drastically changing... Don't ignore it... We don't have oil and energy companies lobbying us to ignore climate change, that's the politicians job to get you to ignore it and to get you to believe it's a democrat tactic and your a "paranoid tree hugging hippy" if u think climate change exists.... I'm far far from it. I'm right leaning former marine from Vietnam... But I am fair with our environment And you should too. Do your own research and don't rely on cnn, fox or msnbc blue or red website news pages or any of that crap with a political agenda. Do Good research
Hopefully some new wolves cross onto that island I forgot the name of it right now, to freshen up the gene pool. The moose population is exploding and everything is starting to inbreed. Especially thre Wolves. I think there are only 50 or so left. All they need is 1 to make the trek and strengthen the gene pool. Last year, I read 1 wolf actually left the island.
Looks like expected El Nino quit playing and went in the house...something like 35 degrees below average temps. for this time of year...

This all happened 30-35 yrs ago... There's a cycle that happens - this isn't unusual or unexpected.
It's just that as humans, we don't live long enough to really notice it, and the records from back when are a little F'd up because the measuring devices of that era weren't so accurate either.
How is this for crazy thinking? I had the following conversation with a progressive friend of mine:
ME: There seems to be plenty of conflicting scientific data concerning global warming, now referred to as "global climate" change.
THEM: What's confusing about it?
ME: Well, currently 85% of the country is experiencing far below normal temperatures for this winter and last winter saw a similar pattern of far colder than normal temperatures.
THEM: Yes, that is true, but 15% of the country IS warmer and demonstrates that the country is suffering from the effects of global warming.
ME: Huh? 85% colder, right? 15% warmer, right? Therefore the overall picture of the country is that it is warmer?
THEM: Yep, you got it.
ME: What the hell are you talking about? Because the rest of the country has been colder than usual these last couple of years, this is a sign that the country is experiencing the effects of global warming?
THEM: What is there not to get? The country is colder due to the effects of global warming.
ME: That doesn't make a lick of sense: We are colder because the country is warmer. That's like me saying you're intelligent because you're moron.
THEM: You know you're an asshole when it come to these things.
ME: That's probably due to the company I keep.

I wouldn't mind if it wasn't for these winters being absolute hell. This winter, however, I can't complain about too much.
Burn more coal or this planet and all humanity are done for. It's the only way to be sure.
Didn't you get the memo? It's "climate change" now. That is, for the next 4-5 hundred years, until our ancestors laugh at us by suggesting the obvious. That's what climate does. Change. The idea that we could affect this change so dramatically was specious at best. And we're responsible for the fate of those poor dinosaurs.
We live in bizarro world.

This climate change must be real. The climate changes from winter to spring, it gets warmer. The climate changes from spring to summer, it gets hotter. The climate changes from summer to fall, it gets cooler. The climate changes from fall to winter, it gets colder. The climate will even change from the morning to the afternoon, it will snow.LOL
12.32am, don't be so quick to cite today's temperature in Anchorage as an indicator of global warming. The Kuroshio current flows alongside the Aleutians and the southern coast of Alasks. This alone makes the winters bearable there. When I was stationed at NAS Adak, most winter days it was warmer there than it was "at home"
Man made climate change is a lefty plot to control lives.
you want to make a real difference? Go after the real polluters in China, India, Russia, etc. The west is cleaner than any other time since the start of the industrial Revolution
You know that big, yellow thing that the Earth revolves around? That gigantic star that is prone to sun spots, solar flares, and magnetic field changes? Yeah. That thing.
You see, it has a lot of influence on our tiny little planet. It causes changes in climate. The Earth is no match for that big monster. Heck, even the scientists at CERN said so, until they were shut up by the politics and money of it all.
It is thought that our poles shift as well. I'm sure you can imagine the craziness THAT could cause. And let's not forget about the geo-thermal heat escaping from the bottom of the ocean. Oh, and volcanoes. Oh Lordy, the volcanoes.
So, yes. The climate changes. It has been for a billion or so years. But, naturally, arrogant man thinks he is so damn awesome, that he can effect everything.
Listen, when the Earth tires of us, we won't meet our demise via the climate. It will be due to some superbug that mutates and outsmarts man's intellect. Unless, of course, an big-ass asteroid hits us first.

And in Anchorage on 2/20/1947, the high temperature was 40 degrees, and Chicago's high that day was 22 degrees.
I wouldn't rest your case so fast.
The amount of global warming brainwashing is alarming. Mostly smart, down to earth, skeptics like police officers have quite a few global warming freaks in their ranks. Scary.

The asteroid of which you speak is due in 2041. Read up on what they are saying and deduce what they aren't. I forgot the name of it, but they know it's coming. Ever wonder why the big interest in studying asteroids? We may be able to stop it, big emphasis on MAY. It's a planet killer.
It's not global warming. It's not climate change. It's called "weather." It happens. I remember when it was in the mid-70s one Christmas day during the 1980s. The next year, we had sub-zero temperatures and snow up the ying-yang. The winters of 1977 - 1979 were the coldest recorded in the midwest, with 1978 also taking the record as the wettest (remember the blizzard?)
