If You Could Do it All Again...

  • The fourth annual Police officer job satisfaction survey results are in. This year the results are stunning. The majority of cops report they wish they had become firefighters.

[...] This year for the first time in nearly twenty years, the majority of officers when asked “if you had it to do over would you still seek a career in police work” said no. Nearly 66% of respondents indicated they wish they had not become cops.

A follow up question for persons saying they wish they sought a different career path was “if you had it to do over what other career path would you pick”. 80% of the respondents who answered this question indicated “Firefighter”.
Everyone is happy when the fire department shows up - they're usually there to save your stuff. When we show up, someone is likely going to jail. If not, we don't usually bring good news. Nationally, police procedures and policies are under attack and being second guessed like never before. People with zero understanding of how and why laws, rules and methods are in place expect miracles where miracles are seldom to be found.

In light of recent events, this can't be viewed as surprising by anyone with a brain.

Just an FYI to readers - Rule #7 still applies. We're allowed to bitch about the job.

I don't know what those 80% of coppers expected when they came on this job, but we're charged with a huge responsibility, we have the power to take someones freedom and life, with that kind of power everything we do is going to be scrutinized. Don't get me wrong, I've screwed over on this job just as much as the next guy, but at the end of day, I chose this job, no one twisted my arm. Those of you that say you would rather be a fireman, are really saying that you want to sit on your ass and watch TV all night and every once in a while spray water on the hot stuff.

Been on the job 13 years, been sued a few times, received my share of CRs, been f&€#ked out of a few good spots, but I have also worked with some of the finest men and women in the world. Come from a family with both police and fire, at family gatherings the firemen are always trying to prove their heroism, while us coppers just sit back and laugh. Even with all the bullshit involved with this job, at the end of the day, I know who I am and what I do, and I don't need anyone to pat me on the back and remind me. Greatest job in the world, wouldn't trade it for anything.

Garbage (in the literal sense) doesn't shoot at you, try to run you off the fucking road on your way home, throw bricks, bottles, bags of shit, overflowing diaper snatched off the baby's ass, etc...

That Morale Survey commissioned by J-Fled must be a real barn-burner because the powers that be put a brick on it so the true state of CPD wont be known by the public.

Id never become a firemen. Never wanted to even as a kid. If i can do it all over again i would be the police in a less corrupt and less liberal city. Thatd be my only change. The police are treated like shit in chicago. We get the worst equipment and are still expected to do more than most departments.

Police need to strike for one day across this country. Advertise the fact that this will happen, give a specific day and plenty of notice when this will strike will take place. Watch what will happen, one day of raping, murder and pillaging will be all it would take to get things right again with police perception and appreciation. Let the savage know that all the liberal pacifist pussy parts of the city will have zero police presence, pull down the skinny jeans and grab your ankles.

Way back when, I left the job and joined the fire department. One day on two days off and the daily's appealed to me. I was doing part time construction and working when I could at McCormick. McCormick was notorious for hiring fire department personnel to work the shows; big fucking money. Switched deferred to the fire department and worked there for three years. More than doubled my income during those three years. But, and I mean but, if you can adapt to the hose dragger culture, then make the switch. Fire department is a different world than the police department. I eventually came back to the PD because of the assuming type thinking that is so prevalent on the fire department. In my soul I was a crime fighter not a firefighter.

How true this is with the anti-police climate ever rising, the elected, media, bosses, throwing coppers to the lions den on a daily basis! Now they will be teaching public school kids about the Burge lie, about the falsehood about what he did, but yet not teach why Fahey and O'Brien were savagely murdered by the Wilson brothers! Disgusting pathetic only words to describe this stupidity!

Maybe the over one million cops out there should take a 2 week vacation at the end of which you can tell us what you think.... after the smoke clears a little. Bet you'd need a carrier pigeon to tell us

Cops really need to understand that leftist anti police-anti-decency philosophy is more prevalent than ever before. Grammar school children are now being indoctrinated with leftist ideology and such values are being reinforced in high school and in universities. Times are changing quickly. The new left has gained control of mass media, education, entertainment, and technology. A slow campaign of brainwashing is finally bearing fruit. Cops will remain public enemy number one for decades to come.

Guess I'll cross that bridge when it comes in the next few months.

True but think about fireman work 81 days a year same pay they work an extra shift (which many do) make $1,000 take home for 1 extra day of pillow fighting not flaming them but it is reality! Back in the day we had many fires now with smoke detectors, sprinklers, better materials, the fires are rare that are major! When fire arrives on scene like said many times they are welcomed open arms we arrive and we hear "what the F**K you want" even when the savage or animal calls!

We should be like Rosemont where you are a Police Officer for six months, then you are a Firefighter for six months.

Just like grammar school volleyball, they rotate.

You probably will lack a little something at each job after not doing it for six months, but probably a good stress reliever.

Also when someone approaches you off duty and wants to bend your ear about a ticket they got from a copper, or to tell you their handcuffs were too tight when they got arrested for punching out the Mrs,

You can tell them,

I'm a Fireman.

Been a cop for 40 years, not in Chicago thank heaven. It was bad when I came in, after Nam we were oinked at and called names and shit. But now it's worse, the people that should have our backs are the ones making sure the public hates us, all in the name of 'hope and change'. The real aim is 'Helter Skelter', anarchy where they can come in and pick up the pieces and the population will be so grateful that they'll readily give up any freedom for safety. If I had a son who could be a cop I'd lock him in a basement before I'd let him join. Myself, I hate heights so I couldn't have been a hose dragger, and with 40 years on a few different departments I guess I'm doing what I was supposed to. But damn if I can handle the attitudes people are bringing now, write a parking ticket to a black person and you're 'racist' and they stand there yelling at you. Had enough, coasting til I can go for good.

Looking back not really but should of joined state police or another department in a better state like Arizona or Florida if for no otter reason but to give my children a better life!
