Honest to god, where do they find these idiots?
- Alderman Brookins said on Chicago Tonight that he thinks our contract need to be changed because we make too much overtime in court when we're not always needed for the case.
Easy solution: If you don't want to pay me, don't notify me for court. Considering the department, I.E., the city, they will deviate me and attempt to punish me for failing to appear. I need to appear if told to do so.
So....we show up for free? This asshole does realize that we don't just show up because we figure it's an easy way to collect extra money? We have families, friends, events, side jobs, a dozen things we'd rather be doing most days, but because we signed an actual arrest report attesting to facts of an arrest, we're sort of obligated to attend court? In fact, the Department suspends us without pay if we miss court.
Here's a thought - talk to Anita. Figure out why she has to subpoena four, six, ten officers on a case that any first year law student could tell her is just going to end up as a status hearing? Or that when a defense attorney hears that all the necessary officers are present, he asks for a mutually agreed upon delay, thereby costing the city money? Charge those hours to Prickwrinkle's budget and we'll bet it drops in a hurry.
Or since it's going this way in any event, just declare all offenders innocent of wrongdoing, throw everything out of court, give the assholes a check on the way out the door in hopes of avoiding a lawsuit and pretty much stop policing. You're most of the way there already.

The best part about this one is this brain-trust is an attorney.
It could be just idiocy, but it could also be clever and evil. Most employers haven't been content with merely lowering real wages since the 1970s; they're also following the Walmart-style model of requiring employees to work off-the-clock in order to keep their jobs.
Teachers unions haven't had the strength to fight this off, so K-12 state employees are now regularly supervising bus routes and after-school events without pay. Private sector employees have been doing this kind of thing for decades, both on and off the books. Will police unions be able to resist, or will agencies start making court appearances part of a "ongoing justice education" requirement, in order to squeeze unpaid work out of cops, the way they do with physicians/attorneys/accountants?

Biggest waste of $ is traffic court.
Can't count the amount if times I've been there and never needed. They offer the drivers supervision if they plead guily. How about notify us when someone demands trial at their first appearance?
The other joke about traffic court is that, CPD, writes the tickets but barely reap any of the fines. Average hazardous moving violation costs about $130,
but Chicago collects about $20, the rest goes to the county. The City should give us the opportunity to write Parker's or ANOVs for those with valid licenses. This would give all the $ to the City.

Brookins is a tool, and a defense attorney. Most of his aldermanic inquiries into crimes occurring in his ward were strictly for the purposes of drumming up some legal fees for his practice. Anyone speaking to him from CPD assumes that the conversation is being memorialized on an overhear.
Brookins should be speaking with the ASA's. They subpoena 2, 5, 7, 9 . . . officers who have to show up, every couple of months while this case drags on and on. Then after showing up to court for 2 years straight, on the day of trial the defendant will plead.
It has been like this for all of my 29 years on this job.

I worked midnights at CCDOC back in the 90's with his father who was some sort of minister/preacher. Every sunday morning hew would leave 2 hours early so he could open up his store front church by 7am. Being the watch secretary I never once received a slip for 2 hours for this aldermans father to leave early. So essentially he stole 2 hours every sunday morning that he worked for how many years?
Cant wait until the feds arrest this dumb ass alderman.
I saw that episode a few nights ago where they had a small panel of aldermen interviewed by Phil Ponce. The only one who actually called out the fact that the TIF funds are still managed under some veil of secrecy and how much actually exists was alderman Waguespack. It was very apparent that the others kept quiet on the issue either by choice or by ignorance, with the exception of O'Connor, who adamantly insisted that there was transparency with regard to the funds which were already allocated for other projects. Brookins is just talking out of his ass because he happened to be at 26/Cal one day and saw officers sitting around waiting for their court call, which in his mind, meant that they are doing nothing and getting paid. Instead of doing his homework and finding out how the court section operates, he makes assumptions about overtime pay. Funny how they always want to cut services and pay for the working taxpayer but never cut the fat in administrative waste. Eliminating half of the council would save a ton money alone.
How much extra money did Brookins get beside the pay that he is steeling?

Off Topic: At the last Fop meeting our unit rep told us that Dean said they were mediating Mike Shields lawsuit. Why would we do that? If the Fop is going to give Mike Shields money then I want the Fop to give me my overtime for the first twelve months. Mike Shields should be sued by the Fop, not the fop paying Mike Shields. If not, can we sue the Fop for something. SCC this should be a topic.

Back in the 80's there was a Sgt. In Area 4 Youth who resented people getting paid OT for court and working late. He started throwing out subpoenas which resulted in several court deviations. He was told to knock it off and re-assigned to Youth H.Q. An informal recognition of his forward thinking supervisory skills.

Where does find the time to be an alderman? He is an attorney at Brookins & Wilson, his law firm. He is an embalmer & funeral director at his family funeral home. His wife is with the Cook Co. Board of Review property assessment. His Chief of Staff was charged with accepting a bribe in Feb 2014 in return for helping secure Brookins support for a liquor license. Brookins was not charged.

Hey Alderman Brookins, Why is it the days that I missed traffic court and it turned out that the defendant didn't show up anyhow I still took a day for not coming to court? Please respond.
OT but I need to vent. I have to say the biggest disappointment I have experienced is the recently promoted class of Detectives. The overwhelming theme is as follows:
-I know everything about investigations
-I'll watch you do the job because it is beneath me
-I shouldn't be assigned this job
-No I can't work overtime
-Why can't Patrol just handle this
-You should do it this way
-I can only work days
I've never seen a bigger bunch of whining bitches in my life. These people show up with their Detective star and don't want to do shit except drink Starbucks and play video games on the computers. It's sad that there are a lot of people on the job who would be excellent detectives who won't get the chance. This is what happens when you have a 10 year old list and promote the bottom of the barrel.

I'm an M/2 and I've worked in 022 for nearly 20 years, and yes there are a whole lot of decent residents in the 21st ward. They try to do the right thing by raising decent families, keeping up their property and looking out for each other. And are very supportive of the police.

Last time I checked, I get paid by the hour. I'm not a salaried manager. If I go to work during hours other than my shift because I'm told I have to or be subject to disciplinary action, I get paid. I go to court every chance I get and I still HATE it, and always have but I like the comp time I EARN. I understood when I got hired I'd have to go to court, I also understood that I'd get PAID for it.
