NFL Fun

  • With the NFL Draft in town, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is playing municipal host this week and hoping to throw such a great lakefront party, his guests will have no choice but to do it again next year.

On Wednesday, Emanuel put on a Bears warm-up shirt and joined NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at a flag football clinic in Grant Park where current and former players and coaches and NFL prospects taught local kids.
You gotta keep the kids interested though:
  • During the announcement, some of the kids sat on the ground in front of the mayor and commissioner and started pulling grass out of the makeshift mini-football field.

Twice, an index finger-waving Emanuel tried in vain to get them to stop.
Wait a minute - shouldn't these props....we mean....shouldn't these kids have been in school?

But hey, that wasn't the most interesting part of it all.Rahm spends who-knows-how-much to get the NFL GM's here, coaching staffs, sports reporters, networks, players (active and retired), and a boatload of first round picks and then this pops up:
  • Just two days before he was expected to be a first-round pick in the NFL Draft, the LSU offensive tackle was rocked by news that police in Baton Rouge, La., want to talk to him about the murder of a former girlfriend.

According to multiple outlets, police said Collins isn’t considered a suspect in the shooting death last Friday of Brittany Mills, 29, who was pregnant and delivered a boy who lived.

Police told the NFL Network they want to establish if Collins — who the network said hadn’t had contact with Mills since September — is the father of the child, while ESPN reported investigators want to see if Collins “can provide them with information.”
Only in Chiraq, run by the Murder Mayor and his trusty McCompStat Boy Wonder, could an out-of-state homicide overshadow such a carefully crafted script. It's like a jinx or something.

Are the Redmoon Theater nuts in their kayaks going to show up again, towing smoldering houses on rafts?

Do we get the promised "French clowns on fifty-foot stilts" now, in Rahm I.'s second term?

Ya gotta love it.

And let's not forget that the NFL is a non-for profit (although they're going to give it up, supposedly) in which the CEO made $44 million. And that millions upon millions of our tax dollars went to the renovation of Soldier Field. FYI, 28 out of 31 NFL stadiums were built with tax money (to varying percentages.)

So we as a city probably cut a deal in competition with other cities with the NFL in order to attract millionaire "welfare" recipients. I'd wager that hosting the NFL draft costs the city somewhere in the neighborhood of six figures.

While I am an NFL fan, watching the draft is about as exciting as wathcing paint dry.

Don't follow the college players close enough to know about them. Teams draw it out too long. First 10 teams should have 5 minutes.

An app on my smartphone tells me when my team has drafted.

And there is a lot of talent in the 3-7th rounds.

O.T. To the men and women of the Baltimore Police Department. The reports of your heartache and disgust over the evaporation of mayoral, city council, and presidential support are surfacing. Whip-sawed by the media, and having every word or action twisted into an obscenity, you could rail against that injustice. But, I see a department showing true discipline and heart. Take pride in your service to a city that needs you now more than ever. You are showing L.E. nationwide that, in spite of all the turbulent, volatile, social currents, the police can keep the peace with justice and humanity. Bless you all. Stay safe.

So Rahm's upset about some little kids pulling out grass but thousands of drunken louts turning the park into a mudpit is fine. Maybe the kids could pool their allowances and give his brother a cut and it would be OK.

It'll never be anywhere but NYC, LA or here since those cities are the ones with theaters capable of holding the event.

How smoothly the Draft Town runs will determine whether or not the NFL returns for 2016. Chicago had to commit to two years just to land 2015, so it's Goodell's call. Let's see how many gate-crashers show up to the (free) Grant Park activities.

I'm boycotting the NFL! They are anti-gun. Last year they would not allow the company Daniel Defense air a commercial during Super Bowl! I saw the commercial on line. No gun was ever displayed, fired, pointed. It was a simple statement. A returning veteran has the right to protect his home and family. He wants the best. That is all! No nipples popping out! None of that other nonsense. Besides that I want nothing to do with anything Ramster has his hand in.

Breads and Circuses avec les fifty foot clowns...

Rahm isn't a mayor.
He's a conniving chiseler disguised as a crooked middleman pretending to be a party planner extraordinaire plying part-time trade as a carnival pick-pocket.

Hello SCC,
Slightly off topic but concerning city tax money.
Has anyone seen the "mosque deco" crap on the pavement at Elston and Pulaski and Montrose and Pulaski? REALLY?? We need this why? Who has the contract? Maintainence should be fun and costly. Just like that faux red brick crosswalks they put at intersections that last a year or so at a cost of what I heard 5K per intersection? Heard they are doing this same crap on Devon with a big "D" in the pavement at all of the signalized intersections. no pension, no man power but we have $$ to spend on this crapola?
Thanks for letting me vent.

A merit ET? Now there's a job where you should actually have to pass and know what you're doing. You may have to collect evidence that puts someone very bad away for a long time. Then again, merit bosses running things into the ground, so I shouldn't be surprised. I will slap myself.

Nope you didn't miss anything you weren't special is all. For these positions it's not really "merit" but department can use management up to 20% so can do what they want, pick whoever they want basically. Like being in a specialized unit..but one you had to take a test for ??? Makes no sense, more department BS

At the NFL Draft tonight with my kids. Unfortunately, we were so far away from the action we couldn't see anything. We were about to wrap it up and go home when I ran into a det. from AreaCentral.

The detective was working a side job for the NFL & Without me even asking him, he asked my boys if they wanted to meet some NFL draft picks. In ten minutes we were in a private function and he walked my boys around and introduced them to a dozen players. Apparently, The NFL has "handlers" (the police) that shuffle these college kids around when they're in town for the draft. Anyway, When we left, my boys we're on top of the world and each had a Bears jersey.

Thanks Tom, you gave my kids an experience they'll never forget.

I bought something at a local business there and asked the owner if they were repairing a gas line, or something. He went on a rant I won't repeat. No parking because of the construction people, no business because of the traffic detour, no peace because of the deconstruction of the newly paved street.
Traffic's been tied up for TWO WEEKS on that mess. First, they shredded the pavement, then removed it, then poured fresh pavement, but inserted those stupid designs. They rattle your teeth when you drive over them and the snowplows are gonna pull them right out of the street if freeze/thaw doesn't do it first.

I said the same thing to my passenger that you just posted. No money to fix potholes, but tens of thousands wasted for this silly shit.

Brick paving really became obsolete a century ago; lots of work to lay, heaves up with frost, etc. I know some stretches, like out in Hinsdale on a quiet residential street, where they kept it in because it was in good shape and is "historic," but that was about it.

Now it's come back like crazy. River Grove has put in blocks of brick-center sidewalks all down Grand Avenue (past empty businesses) and Elmwood Park has even laid some fancy alleys.

Here's the reason --

http://wonderfulengineering.com/tiger-stone-paving-machine-makes-brick-roads-like-laying-carpet/

This thing lays 'em down like crazy.

Only thing is...anyone who has every tried to shovel snow off a brick sidewalk prays for nice smooth low-maintenance concrete. Every few inches...clank! Hit the joint. Again. Clank! Again...

Your tax dollars at work.

I drove through there today and it's awful. They're doing Pulaski and Montrose, too, not just Pulaski and Elston. When the sun hits that mosaic design, it's brutal on the eyes and now there are NO lane lines or marked turn lanes in the intersections.
