Teacher Strike Coming?

Rahm might be the only big city mayor to preside over two separate teacher strikes in four years:
  • Chicago Public Schools officials will not offer teachers an additional year on their current contract, saying the district cannot afford a built-in 3 percent pay hike.

"We were optimistic that solutions to the Board's structural financial challenges would have been achieved by now and a well-deserved increase for CPS staff would have been possible," interim district chief Jesse Ruiz wrote in a letter to Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis on Thursday. "Regrettably that is not the case."

The district's decision means negotiations will continue to replace a deal that expires June 30.
$1.1 billion ion debt and no end in sight - Start making contingency plans now.

They got millions of $$$ for Principal Training contracts and cleaning contracts that are under federal investigation, but they cant pay the teachers. CPS is just a place to launder money.

Rahm is worried the teachers are gonna "stick it in his
ear" by striking...

So funny how Rahm first blew into town and picked very unnecessary fights with Police, Fire and Teachers, hoping to separate them from public goodwill.

What did cops and firemen get in their contracts? No where near that! I realize that teachers work hard and I (being a cop) wouldn't want to be a teacher and put up with all that they do but how can a teacher get a higher raise than a police officer or a fireman?
What the F is wrong with the FOP and Local 2?

Time to start making plans to show solidarity with the teachers.

Us and CFD should be walking the lines with them on our days off. Take turns, an hour or two per day.

It would look like shit on national TV for Emanuel. People would get the impression that we're on strike too, thus devastating what's left of Emanuel's national reputation.

The teachers are the boots on the ground in the WORST MAJOR SCHOOL DISTRICT IN AMERICA!!! Where the fuck do they get off demanding more money or threatening to strike??? They already make more to do less than any other teaching Union....if they strike I sincerely hope Rahm pulls a Reagan, deregulation kicks in, and he fires all their asses bringing them back at $15/hour and uses the Daley line of "there's 100,000 people who'd love your job! Don't like it? Go work somewhere else!" I'm frankly of their greed!

Think about it...teachers make more than CPD...much more. They're straight days. weekends, holidays, SUMMERS off. There's all the OT by way of tutoring, mentoring, coaching, etc they can handle. They're not shot at, spit on, or subjected to daily vilification by the media. When they teach in a way that, while proper, is against what the armchair qb lefty media thinks should be the way to teach they aren't faced with angry riots, protests, and assholes walking in with their hands up or shirts that say "I can't read"!!! And YOU want more money or you're going to strike??? FUCK YOU!!! Their greed makes me sick!

U my friend are a tool. Do some research before u play tough guy. The avg teacher makes about or a little less then we do.They get paid to tutor just like we get paid to do special, vri and court.THey have kids and parents motherfu@king them, spitting at them and even getting punched. We have weapons and the ability to squach the problem without being sued because we protected ourselves. The reason we have one of the worst school system is the same reasons every major Dem city does::minorities.They don t want to learn which brings the rest of the schools down. Most of the smart kids are in private or catholic schools, which makes the public schools look like they can t teach.
Why do most of the north side schools have some of the best scores.Look at the demographics and you will get ur answer. And just like us the CPS doesn t get social security so compare what they make to the suburban teachers. For all the shit they have to deal with , like us they are under paid.

Strike? What about the CTU not letting their members know about the real estate they own or used to own? Where's the transparency by the CTU, especially as they want it from others?

CTU sells building but where did the $50M go?

CHICAGO — It’s a building few know much about. The Chicago Teachers Union has owned a 30 story high-rise for five decades at 55 W. Chestnut. The residential building, in the heart of the Gold Coast, was built in 1966 as discounted housing for retired teachers.

Now almost 50 years later, only 7 teachers are living there. About six months ago CTU sold the building at just under $50 million.

WGN Investigates went looking for answers on how that money will be spent by the union.

CTU canceled an on-camera interview three hours before it was scheduled to happen. They answered some questions over the phone. CTU Vice President Jesse Sharkey says the money was used to purchase another building at Damen and Carroll for $8.5 million. As far as the remaining $40 million, they are not providing many answers. They said the money would be used for scholarships but they wouldn’t reveal which ones or how many.

CTU, with its 30,000 members, has been known for attacking the city for its lack of transparency. Under CTU’s by-laws only their Executive Board and Trustees really need to be made aware or vote on a major transaction linked to the building.

The Gold Coast high-rise was sold to Robert Buford, owner of Planned Property Management. That company owns 3,000 apartments in the city.

To: FUCK YOU!!! Their greed makes me sick!

While your language is less sophisticated, your thoughts and feelings towards teachers certainly matches those of CPS bureaucrats, CPS Board members, and charter operators.

Teachers haven't voted to strike yet. SCC was only reporting that the city has refused to extend our current contract, a distinction that you missed.

If teachers do strike, however, it will be out of frustration that the city allowed SUPES to steal $20 million in the infamous no-bid contract and wasted another $20 million on a mismanaged contract with Aramark, all the while claiming that our pensions cannot be funded.

As far as teachers earning more than CPD, you're pulling that claim out of your ass. Salary after 1 yr on CPD is 61.000. Salary after 1 yr at CPS is 59,000. Plus you need a Bachelor's degree to become a certified teacher. And of course we have 6 weeks off in the summer. Duh. School's out. We also don't get paid in the summer. CPD furloughs equal the same number of days off. I'm married to a CPD cop and we've done the math.

If you aren't a trolling CPS administrator, I suggest that you consider how much CPS and CPD have in common. We serve the same population.

Dude, calm down. First of all, no one is asking for more money. CPS had the option to extend the contract and pay a 3% raise, but chose not to due to a supposed lack of money. Most teachers weren't even interested in extending, as there are many more important issues to fight for.

I guess you don't know any teachers, because weekends are certainly not "off". We may not be standing in front of the kids, but we're doing all of the preparation that's necessary to teach them all week. And maybe we don't get shot at, but you don't think we get spit on, hit, verbally attacked, etc? Really??

Most teachers don't want more money. We just want to be able to do our jobs under reasonable conditions, and not have to teach 35 kids, the majority of whom are traumatized and unsupported at home, with very little support or resources.

I was raised in a union family. I am a proud union member. CTU, you already have a pretty sweet contract that other public unions envy. You have pretty good working conditions. No weekends, holidays, summers. You get a spring break and 2 weeks at Christmas. You dont risk serious bodily harm every shift. You have extra financial incentives to coach, tutor, supervise. You can earn more by furthering your education while the city pays for it. Many of you do not have to abide by residency rules. I get it, I know teaching is a hard job because I have done it, you have to prep and grade and do a lot of work outside of classroom time.
But beware of striking again in 2 years time. CTU, last time the families were with you, this time, maybe not so much, and all you will be doing is pushing people into 9.5s camp. He would love it if you strike, he wins, then we public unions are all fu$#ed. Your contract is already pretty sweet, messing with families, child care and vacations to make up lost days isnt. We do not have a union. We have a bargaining unit. The overwhelming majority of teachers do not work 3 months out of the year yet the average salary for a CPS teacher is $75k a year. That's absurd. There is no money left. In fact, Illinois is about $200B (yes, billion) in the hole with debt and unfunded liabilities. The question is not how much of a pay increase the question is how much of a pay and benefits cut is required. The debt is so high now, it is comical. Federal bankruptcy court is the only option. The sooner the better for all.

Let me clarify some things since my wife is a teacher
1. She does not get weekends off and brings work home because she has to grade and prepare
2. She is not paid for her winter break nor spring break and is not paid over the summer
3.The city does not pay for her education
4. No bodily harm, should I remind you of the number of fights that occur in schools and the increase of school shootings
5. Financial incentives for coaching? My wife coached and her salary come out to $10 an hour
6. Sweet contract? you consider working 60 hours a week and not get paid sweet

If they don't strike then every union in this country is done. You are lacking knowledge about unions and the conditions that existed in this country before unions. Your last sentence shows that it all about you. Unions were never about just me but about the collective. Happy May Day!

You are actually proving the original poster's point. If your numbers are correct, then a police officer makes just 3.4% more than a teacher after one year of service. But certainly the police officer works considerably more days for his/her salary.

Looking at the CPS 2014-2015 schedule, a CPS teacher works 195 days. That's based on 5-day work weeks running August 25 - June 24, minus 3 weeks off for winter and spring vacations minus 8 additional days off for other holidays.
http://cps.edu/SiteCollectionDocuments/SY14_15Calendar%28Update%29.pdf

How many days does the police officer work in that same time period? I'm willing to bet it's a lot more than 195 days. And if it's more than 202 days (3.4% more than 195), QED.

Teachers absolutely should make the same or more than police. The highly qualified and talented teachers are worth even more. In inner cities, where so many kids have no support at home, teachers are their only hope. If we do our jobs well, especially in the early years, we can completely change a kid's path in life. The more kids learn, the more options they have and the less likely they are to be a problem for the police. In other countries, teachers are valued way more than in the US. I realize that some teachers shouldn't be teaching, but that's an entirely different issue. The good ones deserve every penny they earn. You cannot even imagine the time and energy that's required to successfully teach in the inner city.

$1.1B in debt, and they want raises for what? Because the cost of living happened to go up?

So what? Why is that the tax payers problem? Why do we have to make anyone "whole"?

I'd take a fixed pool of money, and EVERYONE can be considered for a raise out of that pool. That means that some might get a raise, others won't. Some considered for and able to receive a raise might not if the pool runs dry - too bad. No additional priority next year either.

Raises based upon MERIT - actual, achievable, fair, non-manipulateable goals. Make or exceed your numbers, you get considered. You might or might not get a raise.

Welcome. To. The. Real. World.
