Uniform and Appearance Changes?

An e-mail from a reader:
  • SCC,

Word from a friend that the Department is about to change a whole bunch of uniform specs:

They already outlawed the shorts thank god. Now, no more knit hats in winter or baseball caps in summer. It's the saucer or the Rocky-the-squirrel hats at all times.

Also, all exposed tattoos will be covered while on-duty, just like New York. McCarthy had to cover his and everyone knows the NYPD is the only way.

Word is also that the FOP was told to shut up about this and not to raise a fuss. If that's true, why do we have a Uniform and Equipment Committee at FOP sucking up money if they aren't even going to have a voice for this?
Anyone hear about this?

Both true. The cap thing is coming down the pipe soon. But just so you guys know the city has to buy your old caps back since they forced you to buy them about three years ago when they became mandatory. As far as the tattoo thing you can all thank good ole Wayne Gulliford for that one. He hates tats. So everyone with sleeves and such will be wearing a fucking long sleeve in the summer. Thanks Wayne. 10-15 years ago when tattoos weren't as popular this could have gone down but now a ton of people have ink on their arms. It's fucking retarded. Anything inappropriate I get but the rest wtf. How about grandfathering people in. But I doubt that since it makes sense. Get ready for a hot summer baby!!!

That's a great start!!!!! Supt. McCarty Please please change the following:

1). No more gym shoes.
2). No more cargo pants.
3). Your bullet proof vest should be worn under your uniform shirt. The vest covers and embroidered stars look like shit with the uniform.

4) no more dickies or mock tutle necks. Wear a tie with a long sleeve shirt. And a white T Shirt with the short sleeve shirt. Look like a professional police officer. Not a security guard.

Old school.

Uniform standards are created and maintained by the department. It's not contractual this fop has zero say in this matter. City rules the day when it comes to appearance and uniform. Sorry sleeve tattoos, enjoy wearing long sleeve shirts even in cd for the next 20 or so years

I am so fuckin tired of hearing that’s how New York does it, FUCK NEW YORK !!!!! The crown cap suxs , you have to worry about loosing it and taking time for your lost shield. The baseball cap is the best. Now talk a\bout having to cover any tattoos you have that’s bullshit, when I got my ink 4 years ago there was nothing that said you can’t have any exposed ink, I am very proud of my ink. This job is getting more and more Fucked up!!

Yeah, unfortunately we've been hearing about this for the last few days. Whether you agree with the changes or not, only a fool would argue that this is good timing, right before the hot and heavy summer months.

Usually, the morons in charge come up with these changes when it is in the cold, winter season. I'm not convinced this is entirely on McJerseyJerk. It could very well be from some pathetic underling, looking to earn his or her grossly high paycheck. If that is the case, one would hope that that person is held accountable if the body count rises these coming months.

In typical moronic fashion, the department comes down with a daily standup inspection order. Most normal business owners would wait until after the changes are put forth, before going ahead with company policy. Not in this town. Now you got idiotic white shirts asking the blue shirts what they are allowed to wear because they themselves have no clue.

Get ready for the load of comments on this thread stating the ever intelligent, 'Duh, this is how we dressed when I got on the department....duh. We are going back to the old ways....duh.' Yeah okay. If you can go back to the old days of no in-car cameras, no cell phone cameras, no 24/7 anti-police media (like CNN), no T.R.R.s, and all the other perks from the era of thirty years ago, then I will staple that winter raccoon cap to my fucking head year round. Until that happens, shut the fuck up you delusional lemmings!

For the record, I think tattoos are unprofessional if visible. Also, the uniform situation has gotten out of control. However, to start pretending like everything is legit now, just shows how stupid the people in charge are. I guess they just want us looking are best for the next big police media scandal, which is bound to happen, in Chicago. At least I hope that is their way of thinking. Unless even they are so out of touch to actually believe that the mighty police crowns, will stop some shitbag from taking a shot at us.

While I'll probably get guff for this, oh well. Chicago uniforms probably look the worst in the state. There is no standard here. Everyone looks different, everyone does what they want. Some have outer carriers, some don't. Some are dark navy, others are blue. Some guys look like a SWAT unit with everything on molle. A lot of guys don't even wear their name tag, star, etc. Some guys, their uniform looks like they haven't put it under an iron in a decade. Many suburbs have standards and they look great. Look at ISP, those guys look fantastic. It looks horribly unprofessional when you see a CPD guy, looking like he crawled out of a garbage can, pulling onto a job. Have some respect. Look the part. It isn't difficult.

Tattoo covering I can agree with. No knit hats in the winter is simply stupid. Although the Elmer Fudd hat is warm, you're going to have to have your shield attached to it and that's a liability on the skreets and it also makes you look like Elmer Fudd.

Sorry, as an old timer, i think this is a great move and long overdue. the Department does not have to ask the FOP uniform committee about anything if the department is paying for first issue or taking uniform pieces away. You get a uniform allowance, the department technically paid for what you purchased, it didn't come out of your pocket. And the tattoos are ridiculous, military doesn't allow it. With the distressed hats, arm sleeves and stocking caps on 60 degree days, we look bad. No, hair cuts. Time to look like a unified team instead of a bunch of individuals.

1.) The tats look like shit. Cover them up. It wasn't that long ago you had to cover them here. Some of these young guys look like they belong in the yard of a Cuban prison.

2.) The baseball hat, where to begin? IIRC, the baseball hat was a Phat Phil ploy to make the kids on his little league team like him. I never bought one. I'm a policeman, not a third baseman. The baseball hat has made our roll calls look like a casting call for "Pump Boys and Dinettes".

3.) The knit hat is another nod towards thug life. Esp. the non authorized ones with skulls on them.

I never, ever thought I'd agree with this regime about anything but I have to on this.

I hope this will also address the haircut standards as well. No more long hair, dreads, beards, fluorescent colors and such. No exceptions to this rule should be allowed. Don't like the haircut standards, then quit. Wal-Mart and McDonald's is hiring.

I for one welcome the change back to the old way.
Short sleeve and crown cap for warm weather. Long sleeve, tie and crown cap for colder weather.

Good...

As a matter of fact, outlaw those silly "athletic shoes" and make hard bottom leather boondocker and trooper type boots required footwear... Yeah... They might actually require some polishing and buffing a couple times a week.

Hard bottom, high traction sole boondocker or trooper boots are the best for Police work anyway. Good for the random toe stomp and shin kick. (Follow up with an eye slap and you win! ;^)

Keep the cargo pants but in a tougher fabric with a little spandex and a reinforced crotch and zipper.

And for crying out loud, make it ok to blouse our pants during the winter season.

Oh wait... That would give The Police a non public servant "militaristic" appearance.

Sounds like the FOP is ball less and has their tails tuck between their legs in essence, being emasculated. Has the FOP been wussified? Perhaps silenced wussies? The FOP must keep it real and raise the awareness citing these heavy handed changes are being mandated without a bi-partisan agreement between the membership and the stuperintendent. These changes are sobering

As a Lt said to me at JJ's, "There's nothing uniform about our uniform." Take a look around the roll call room--he's absolutely right. The best advice I ever got came from an angry 1st watch Captain who said to me, "act like you know what you're doin, would ya?" I think you should also look like you know what you're doing--look professional and they'll believe anything you tell them.

The city won't have to buy shit back!
The baseball caps were not mandatory but we're an OPTION, as were the cargo pants and also the shorts. Did those who bought shorts get reimbursed? I didn't think so!
Grandfathering in tattoos??
How about grandfathering in those who came on and were promoted with a high school diploma but now can't test anymore because the city changed the rules in the middle of the game and don't have a four year degree?
Or those of us who had free health care when we came on?
As for the tattoos, I could care less. I have none, but to each his own.

seems like the uniform standards and appearance went to hell over the past few years....round cap?...useless; covering the tats?..other departments (NY, Las Vegas maybe?) have the same rule....proud of the ink? then get another job, or cover it....gym shoes? look ridiculous...the dept. should get a more professional look, and that goes for hair standards, fingernail polish, etc.

(OT) Just found this on a true patriots page Ted Nugent!

Toby Keith & I stood in the 116' Iraq sunfire upright & saluting as dozens & dozens of flag draped coffins were uploaded onto a C130 for the last flight of warriors. We stood at the bedside of Private 1st class Todd Bolding of Austin TX with an RPG stuck in the middle of his bloodsoaked bandaged chest when he died. I accompanied the remains of Lieutnetant Eric Macrea surrounded by a C130 loaded with flagdraped coffins of those who gave all. I have cried tears of blood knowing full well that freedom aint free, This is what drives me. Never forget. Godspeed US Warriors all. How dare we fail to perform our WE THE PEOPLE duties when so many gave all so that we can to do so. Do it for the hero warriors everyday. Happy Memorial Day everyday. Happy Veterans Day everyday. Happy Independence Day everyday. Happy D Day everyday. Happy V Day everyday. Remember the Alamo.

Something to think about! Chris Kyle Navy SEAL American Sniper saved how many soldiers lives? How many police officers gunned down? But yet the White House sends no representatives there, but yet sends so many to funerals for thugs who are shot after attacking police!

The changes are a very good thing regardless of the NYPD connection or not. They should add the vest issue as well. I carried less gear in Afghanistan then some carry on this job. Our appearance doesn't command respect, and if you think that that fact doesn't matter, then your ignorant. I recently was embarrassed to be in a South Loop restaurant where a "tact team" was eating. I have tattoos, wear the Molle vest cover with star patch so shitheads don't steal my star. I wear cargo pants because they give you 2 extra pockets, for you non working police out there. I wear the baseball cap. And I think I look pretty damn good, along with most of the rest of my district. I shave, cut my hair short, and do my job. Ok, let the department make all these changes, but let's make sure they are practical changes. Our uniforms need to evolved over time, just as the military gear/uniforms have evolved with technology and better fabrics. This is not the police dept of the 70's, sorry old timers, but need to move on from the way things used to be.

15yrs on CPD and 24yrs in military and the one thing I leaned is how to adapt with change, because change is inevitable.

I am all for uniformity, it does make us look more professional. If the dept wants us to wear a certain uniform, then it is about time the dept issues us our uniform just like CFD, ISP and suburbs so that way we are all the same.

By the way CFD gets uniforms issued and still gets uniform allowance.

This partially has to do with the potus speach the other day, he said police department uniforms should have softer more approachable look.
Secondly, we ruined it by wearing baseball hats backwards and no one said anything. Same with the knit winter hat. And the gym shoes: they give us specifications on that but no follows it and no supervisors enforce the uniform standard. So I'm sure that will be the next to go. The sleeve tattoos are going to look awesome on you when your 80 and look like a prune. The military is no longer allowing exposed tattoos, so the department is following suit. If everyone starts wearing the currently approved uniform correctly maybe we won't lose anything else. And for god sakes supervisors, start doing your fucking jobs. You wanted to be a supervisor! You don't have to write everyone
up but when you see a infraction say something, don't just ignore it.

The athletic shoes, outside vest covers and optional wearing a hat goes back around 20 years now. I have leather walking shoes and they are the most comfortable shoes I own. Of course, I remember the Saucony athletic shoes that were the only authorized option back then. The shoes I wear look similar to those. I could wear regular shoes, I'd miss the gym shoes, but oh well.

The outside vest cover looks like shit, but I get hot even with that. I don't know what the hell would happen with the vest under the shirt in summer.

Personally, I like the patch star. I don't have to worry about losing my star, it's in my wallet.

How the hell do you get all that gear on your belt? My hips are killing me as it is. I was at the chiropractor getting a deep tissue massage and the woman said that I must have x (she was very close) number of years on the job, I asked her if she read the rings on the tree trunk and she said no, I can tell by how out of whack everything is.

The department can change uniform rules and regulations any time they want without union's approval. The department gives us several uniform allowance checks each year to cover the cost of having to constantly purchase new uniforms so that you are in compliance with the rules that will always change throughout your 20+ year career.

It used to be that the uniform was impractical and uncomfortable, so the department made numerous changes to accommodate. Sadly, the members took these changes a bit too far and it got out of hand with many adding their own fashion twist.

The biggest problem is that no supervisors enforce the uniform rules and regulations. The problem is not that the officer is wearing a baseball cap and cargo pants and gym shoes. The real problem is that the baseball cap is dirty and on backwards, and the cargo pants are dirty, holes, too big or too tight, ripped dragging hem, and filthy smelly worn gym shoes.

Furthermore, supervisors should call officers out with the long nails, nail polish, earrings, jewelry, dread locks, beards, long hair, goofy childish sunglasses, and those with bad offensive hygiene.

To me, this is where the real problem lies. Too many officers are on the job just to get a free college education and not because they want nor respect being the police. And too many bosses are on the job because they are merit political hacks who have power egos.

Second, the look unprofessional in uniform. I'm in agreement about getting rid of the shorts. Get 1 uniform and hold guys to it.

They cant have 1 uniform you idiot. Different types and ranks of police call for different appearances. And most of us with forearm tattoos didn't think about CPD uniform standards when we got them in memory of the tours we sucked up in Iraq and Afghanistan while you were suckin down Al's Beef complaining about the last piddly little issue the dept had. What looks professional is a matter of opinion. USMC Devil Dog on a forearm looks pretty damn professional to me and gets my respect any day.

Old school.

Quit living in the past. This is a new kind of animal out there now. Do you wanna be running with a crown cap on or the fight of your life worrying about losing your shield? You're an idiot.

...........
You don't always have to wear your hat and if your chasing someone you shouldn't be wearing it. Get rid of some of that crap you have on your belt and that you shove into your vest pockets. I've been on this job over 25 years and its amazing how I'm still able to catch people. If you think this is a new animal you have a lot to learn. A rose by any other name still smells the same.

Couldn't have said it any better myself!!! Crown Caps are for idiots who don't do any police work. I work, run, and fight with idiots unlike the do nothings. I can understand the tattoo's for those in uniform. That was the rules when I started. I didn't know it ever changed. I thought it just wasn't enforced anymore. How about going after the real problems like painted long nails, dreads, and jewelry??????????? How about making officers in uniform where a uniform belt?????

1. I have no problem with Cargo Pants or Baseball Caps, or stocking caps. If your working like your supposed to be you don't want to worry about losing something and taking a day. I started when we only had crown caps. Its stayed in the trunk the entire tour where it belonged.
2. I have no problem with the dickie. Safter than a tie anyday of the week. Looks like your a worker not a social worker.
3. Shoes, this will never pass. U can get a note from your doctor saying you can't wear leather shoes as they are to hard. Make sure everybody has all black shoes!!!!!!! The keyword ALL BLACK!!!!
4. Vest Covers, Most officers have never worn their vest on the inside since the academy. The uniform stores would shit a brick on this one.

I heard one poster say this is about some accreditation the department is trying to get. I know for a fact CPD is spending a ton of money on something like this. Thanks no money for pensions but money for something we don't need!! Yeah that sounds just like a Shitcago!!!

By all means our department needs an overhaul. Unfortunately there is no way to actually correct the serious issues of morbidly obese officers or exceptionally small officers or smokers or lazy dog ass slobs that look and act like shit.

As for the uniforms, it is as simple as keeping things clean and serviceable. All you Garrison commandos that want to look pretty with clarino shoes or 80/20 pants can go pound sand. That stuff is for office use only. If you want to do police work out on the street than you need some function and it helps to have footwear that fits your needs be it boots or gym shoes. The uniform baseball hat is a poor design but it is still a much more functional and ideal hat for street duty use. The embroidered star/name tag items have been some of the best and most convenient uniform items added in a long time.
Yes the facial hair, earrings, excessive make-up, finger nails, pony tails, dreadlocks and all that bullshit need to be addressed.
Tattoos that have no offensive artwork should be left the fuck alone.

So all you guys new or old that are so worried about your looks, get over it. You should just look professional no matter what options you wear.

WASH YOUR UNIFORMS. Especially that damn outer vest carriers. Replace stuff that is worn or unsafe.

Those are the real concerns.

Good. Long overdue. CPD wears the most non-uniform uniforms in Law Enforcement around. Completely stupid looking. Dumb black vest covers worn on outside, pink cuffs dangling from Gunbelts, beards, tattoos, earrings, "Leave it to Beaver Ball Caps, etc. Look like a buncha rejects from a "Police Academy " Movie with Hightower and Tacklberry. Lose weight too, you puffballs. Try to look like uniformed, real Cops. It's not some movie, and it's not about you, or your urge for individualism. Don't like Uniform Standards? Boo-Hoo, go work elsewhere.

With furlo extensions included, no one is getting time. But that's why the contract was voted in so that changes can happen not set in stone and without a hitch. Aren't you glad you voted in that 10 hr day that's coming up in Jan.

An ancient Chicago Police Captain gave me this advice 35 years ago. Keep your pants creased, your shoes shined and always wear your hat. That way, even if you're an idiot, as long as you keep your mouth shut no one will know.

While we're add it can we remove the taxi checkered bands? Let's get rid of the carriers even though studies have proven that the full weight on our belts are bad for our backs but who cares. Why don't we go to wearing the shiny shoes as well??

Does this apply to bicycle patrol?
No shorts? Take off the helmet then what?

Fatigue uniform for some jobs like Marine Unit, Bomb Unit, Helicopter, Arson. Seriously a round crown cap.

What I'd like to get rid of is the white supervisors' shirts. But I'd rathr they put the money in the pensions.

Somehow the old school "idiots" managed to keep pisons and graveyards full, even with those antique revolvers. I recall two officers who both killed their share of bad people who carried a S&W .41 magnum and a S&W .44 magnum. Revolvers. When the hit hits the fan no one worries about hat shields, believe me.

Recall for a moment the reason for today being a holiday. Memorial Day. I am old enough to fondly recall when it was always on May 30, the hell with three day weekends. It is for our soldiers, sailors, Marines and Airmen who gave everything that we can burn chicken on a grill today.

Thanks Uncle Ed for marching across Europe with Gen Patton's army and for getting disabled by a German IED (called booby trap then) in Belgium and for spending over 2 years in an Army hospital.

And thanks to that tall gangly 20 year old kid I knew in high school who enlisted in the army in 1968 and never came home:

Specialist Four
B CO, 34TH ENG BN, 79TH ENG GROUP, 20TH ENG BDE,
USARV ENG CMD, USARV

Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam

Look like a policeman.

5/25/2015 10:43:00 AM

I have some time on the job and can tell you for certain that back in crown cap days working in a fast district coppers would lose an average of four stars a month.Coppers would jump fences or fight a shithead and guess what you back track and that shiny tin is gone.Lord knows how many old stars are floating around gotta say the patches cut those things down along with losing your shield if you jumped out of the squad in a foot chase in the projects. You old timers don't do much but I hope some shithead doesn't stop your family member with a stolen star.Everyone with 15+ has helped a copper look for a star after a foot chase don't deny it.Nowadays you hardly hear about that.

I agree with a previous poster who commented that there is a new animal out there. We are a terror target, increasing numbers of mass shootings, and increased hatred/violence against law enforcement. There should be more of an emphasis on officer safety and tactical training. Carrying extra magazines, pressure bandages, tourniquets, should be bigger priorities than dress pants and crown caps. Let your professionalism show when you speak to the public and how you conduct yourself as a person.

Correct. Also let's hold Dets to a dress code too. Shirt. Tie. Suit jacket with matching pants. Go to men's warehouse buy 3 suits - and an array of ties and shirts. Most of those guys are wearing cheap ass dockers and generic shirts. Dress w success. These guys look like crap too

OK if we are going to change to obtain CALEA certification, then are they going to change more than just the uniform standards??? How about getting rid of merit and stop promoting those solely based on sex, race, political affiliation, connection to an alderman, exempt or reverend. Also stop allowing "subject matter experts" from giving answers to their family and friends so it appears one is promoted by test score. And while we're talking about appearance...do something about the grossly overweight, out of shape fat asses too

Unless a new order regarding the hat's came recently take a look at the most recent order which was issued late last year in the department directives system. It clearly states that the baseball cap can still be worn with the proper field uniform and the only change regarding the crown cap is that it now can be worn with any of the uniforms. The order Also states that as of june 1st having a hat is required and that the summer exemption regarding hat use is no longer optional but is mandatory.
