Again with the "Food Deserts"?

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday took another crack at launching a produce bus project that aims to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to parts of Chicago that lack them after a similar city-backed initiative failed two years ago.

Standing on the grounds of an old Bridgeport trucking depot that has been converted into an urban agriculture farm, Emanuel re-upped one of the aspects of his effort to decrease the city's so-called food deserts.

"That used to be a book mobile," said Emanuel, pointing his thumb toward the bus as an artist spray-painted trees on the bright vehicle. "Now that bus has been rehabbed to serve and make sure communities that do not presently have access to fresh fruits and vegetables at a store, doesn't mean they don't have access to fresh fruits and vegetables in their neighborhood, in their community."
Do we really have to explain to the mayor of Chicago why there are so-called "food deserts" in the city?

You see Rahm, there's this thing called "Capitalism." A company, left to its own devices will evaluate the "demand" for certain items and then determine if it can "supply" the items at a cost that produces a "profit" for the owners/shareholders. Then they build a "store" and conduct "business."

Now, government can attempt to "incentivize" businesses to locate in a "desert," but accountants and actuaries can pretty much figure out if it makes sense to rent or build a structure, hire and train staff, stock the shelves and conduct business. Unfortunately, for whatever reasons, food stores don't reap much of a profit from certain neighborhoods. Most operate on pretty thin margins already, and adding in the costs of security along with the propensity for "shrinkage," and the outside chance a riot might burn the store to the ground, well, you can imagine it becomes a net negative.

We don't suppose you realize this, since you were handed $11 million for having a degree in interpretive dance or something, but this is how the real world works.

There is no such thing as a "food desert" in an urban setting. If you want fresh produce you can get it.

The fifth paragraph fails to list "locating in a city bereft of leadership honest enough and intelligent enough to provide an adequate number of fairly compensated police and an effective court system bent on delivering justice to the victims and the community at large, and an economy robust to invite capitalist investments" on the negative side of the ledger.

SCC you are right about how the world once worked and in a few far flung places in this country may still work. But don't forget we are living in the transformed progressive world of Obama. We are living in an Obamanation, with a food czar named Moocheal. And Rahm is her disciple.

Now honestly, who in Chicago cannot get to someplace that sells fresh produce, if they really want fresh produce.

Going back to a previous post remember that most of these neighborhoods have FREE (taxpayer bought) school breakfasts and lunches. Why buy when the you can get all you want for the kids at schools. Maybe Rahm should have the schools issue TO-GO boxes and have the kids take the food home instead of trashing most of it.

There was a sign is U.S. Mess Halls during World War II. "Take all you want but eat all you take. General Dwight D. Eisenhower."

So much of the food is wasted in these programs because not only is there no there no discipline but the people involved make more money by wasting food.

In Minneapolis they feed the school children Breakfast, Lunch and an Early Dinner; then they send them home with a backpack full of food. During the Summer, they are sending a lunch wagon to their front doors.

I am waiting for them to open the food shelves right inside the schools. Maybe then the parents might become involved in their childrens school performance? Except how would they handle the EVIL Christian Food Banks being on school grounds?

A 'mobile' (produce) vehicle serving the high crime area.
Give credit where due, the idea is ingenious.
While 'serving' the community, when there's a drive-by, they drive-off.
They're considering calling it the Weis-wagon.

You've got to see the irony here. What was once a "book mobile", yeah remember those, will now bring produce to the food deserts. So now just because the lazy ass leeches won't buy fruit and vegetables for themselves, we (taxpayers) have to make sure they are eating right? if they wanted to eat fruit and vegetables, they'd buy them instead of junk food. I think this is racist, only focusing on the south side neighborhoods. maybe the kids on the north side want to eat junk food - why can't they have a junk food truck? Why is this entire god-damned country so concerned about what the south side neighborhood is doing and thinking and saying and yearning for? GET A FUCKING JOB AND SUPPORT YOURSELF. Most of the inhabitants of these food deserts wouldn't know what to do with fresh produce. Do they even teach such things as Home Economics in schools anymore. I grew up watching cooking shows and I just can't imagine some of our Desert Denizens watching them.

Cooking wasn't taught in school or TV it was such a part of family life growing up and it was taught parent to child. It was how to pick good produce from the supermarket shelves and how to look for seasonal bargains.

Hey SCC!

Stop continuously demonstrating to Rahm that he is nowhere
near the smart and politically savvy super middle-man/fixer/
financial/governmental insider and go-to guy he rather fancies
himself as being.

He's already beside himself because his national ambitions and
the ultimate financial lick he desires to hit, are screaming and
desperately yanking on the locked burglar gates while burning
to charred skeletons.

Amusing to watch the North Shore Shit-Ass running around with
his eyes wet and bulging out of their sockets with the first real
fear he's ever felt in his life.

Slapping his "propeller-head" minions upside their heads and
screeching: "IDEAS! I NEED MORE FUCKING IDEAS!
Fuck! I shoulda just said fuck the law and made those coppers,
firemen and teachers take a shitty haircut when I first got to this
cow town and told the papers I saved billions! Then I coulda blew
this joint and been back in D.C. before the smoke cleared and
anybody caught on!"

Minion #1: "Well, we can always dirty-up those greedy Coppers
who don't wanna let us use their pension money, right boss?"

Minion #2: "Hey! How about ANOTHER incarnation of the fruit & veggie bus?
Just re-purpose a book-bus, give the press a heads-up and we can ride the
spin into the week-end to deflect from all the killing going on."

Or some such...

So much "busyness" in order to be seen as doing "something"
while the flames started with his very own hands are now spreading
and igniting nearby structures.

And when the embers are cooling and Rahm sees the fused together, crispy skeletal remains
of "national ambitions and ultimate financial lick," it may just dawn on him that in all his
excitement, he had the keys to the burglar gates on a string around his neck.

Hmmmm...
Something about blowing into a cow town and picking very unnecessary
fights with the people who help make it go. However imperfectly at that...

Shit happens when you only have corporatist bean-counters as counsel.

Who comes off being smarter than whom now?

Just another old, tired Blueshirt with many years of courtesy seating
(Behind the wheel of a squad) at the shit-show that IS Chicago.

Motherfuckers ain't nothin' if they ain't funny but the true tragedy
is that so much of the current condition was so easily preventable.

Well... Maybe if any of the principals had a "True North" on their
moral compass and tried to adhere to it?

...Another Sunday rant.
Be safe, watch out for each other.

Police like you have no friends.

Do your time.
Survive.
Escape.
Collect.

Take pleasure in these because
you're seen somehow as a cheat
for your "success" and many will
begrudge you for the crust of
bread that you worked for.

I've worked in grocery stores all over the city, sent in to 'fix' underperforming stores. (Translate 'underperforming' to 'less profitable than our comparable stores'.)

If you think there isn't a HUGE shoplifting problem in bad neighborhoods, you have your head planted firmly in the sand. Underperforming stores get CLOSED because owners are in business to make MONEY.

Bullshit. Businesses exist to make a profit, not to give respect or not. If they made a good profit, they would be there. If they didn't get shoplifted to death they would be there. If the employees didn't rob them blind they would be there. If sis didn't under ring bags of groceries to mom they would be there.

It is simple math, profit brings more retail stores, grocery and otherwise. Nothing else. Profit. Lack of profit drives them away. Not lack of respect.

Oh, where to begin? Wouldn't a business that wants to turn a profit want to invest in an area where there would be little to no competition? Why, yes, a capitalist free market system such as the one we live in would certainly encourage such a profitable venture. Can we explore some of the reasons why, despite the obvious opportunity to make a buck, there are so few food establishments in these "underserved" food deserts? Well, I can speculate, but then, I would be accused of being racist. Feel free to discuss....

I can't speak on the grocery store issue, but I've worked with black coppers that I have personally seen cash their checks at the currency exchange. I'm not suggesting that they all do it, but maybe it's just enough for certain banks to avoid tutor neighborhoods. I wild my be interested in going away portions of my check to cash it at the currency exchange, but to each their own.

On average, grocery stores operate on a 3% profit margin. But when their insurance and security costs are higher to begin with.... and then you consider the "shrinkage" write-offs (theft and soiled goods) that happen with lots of businesses anyway, you're looking at a bad risk. And if it weren't that 20 Million dollar grant to Whole Foods, they wouldn't even dream of opening in Englewood. But I guess you have to start somewhere.... I hope this project works ?

A. You never walked anywhere in your life.

B. "Food Desert" North/Harlem. No elaborate city foodbus.

"Again, the lies and myths about black people storming the banks and stores with rampant theft are not true. Not even close."

Baltimore proves it. Nearly 400 businesses damaged. Not to mention East Rogers Park, both Jewel and the lovely natural food store next door shut down by unsustainable shoplifting, attacks on/robberies of customers in the parking lots, etc.

"Cook County feeds the prisoners better..."

Lets begin here. There was a Dominick's on the corner of 71st and Jeffrey. There was also one on the corner of 115th and Kedzie. I remember when a police officer had to shoot and kill an armed shoplifter at 71st and Jeffrey. How many times did that happen at 115th and Kedzie?

Thus endeth the lesson.

What happened to that grocery store an outfit wanted to build -- south side, I think -- and the project got a lot of threats, intimidation, and shakedown attempts? Did they finish the place, or just take their tools and go home and leave the vacant lot?

When the Jewel on Morse Avenue was driven out of business by the shoplifting inside and robberies and attacks on customers outside, the Dominick's over on Ridge began running a shuttle bus from the Morse location to their store.

Oh no.

The "elderly" didn't get much good out of it -- it was all people rushing out the door with their jackets bulging and s__t falling out, grinning like fools. Of course, the store personnel ignored it and instead followed a middle-aged white guy around, watching that he paid for that carton of smokes. "Don't look at me. You're busing your theft problem in."

After a while, the bus was very quietly discontinued.

Yeah, there was a "lack of respect" -- and it wasn't on the part of the stores.

"Again, the lies and myths about black people storming the banks and stores with rampant theft are not true. Not even close."

Yeah, that is why everything in ghetto stores is behind 2"-thick Plexiglas. Have to ask for the can of beans and put your money up front into this rotating thing. Then the beans come out, and not until.

...and that surveillance photo of the guy with the gun in his belt robbing the bank I'd just been to the day before was undoubtedly a phony.

...and all these scenes of people smashing stolen vans through the doors of fancy stores and grabbing everything they can carry are all made up, as are the flashmob assaults on shopping malls.

...and these photos of people looting 30 pharmacies and clinics in Baltimore are all a setup with paid actors.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/freddie-gray/bs-md-dea-suspect-photos-20150611-story.html

Aside from the huge street drug problem and gang turf wars this has triggered, pharmacy customers will now fall victim to identity theft from all of the stolen prescription information...

You're right. This is all made up.

"People live in South Shore working people, senior citizens, that Walgreens on 71st and Jeffrey is packed because of a lack of a real grocery store. WTF

7/12/2015 10:01:00 PM

"People live around North/Harlem, working people, senior citizens, and have to buy overpriced packaged food at CVS (back and forth across dangerous Harlem Avenue) because the Dominick's closed, and the new Walgreen's probably won't be ready for another year -- not that that is a grocery store either. We badly needed a nice fruit market on the corner, right where Blockbuster moved out when it died -- we got an expensive chain "health food" store filled with jars and bottles of expensive pills and organic f__ing dog food and "toilet paper made from recycled materials." It doesn't look like it's doing much business."

You get this situation in many parts of town.

71/Jeffrey was real nice 50 years ago. IC train, our doctor was there, used to go shopping, etc. Like you say, you've moved away now...it's sad.

God bless and stay safe, my friend.

Rule -- if you have access to an automobile, the "food desert" does not exist for you.

It's the genuinely poor and elderly who have the real problems. Where can you get to, and how many bags can you carry back while struggling over the snow and ice with a walker. Daley laughed at us about CTA cutbacks -- "No one has to walk more than four to eight blocks to find a bus..." You try it sometime on a good day, let alone when it's 0 or 100 out there.

...and why is it that, every Thanksgiving and Christmas, I see morbidly obese people on TV lined up outside their churches to grab another free Butterball? It's like north side collects and gives, south/west sides take. And take.

Most "charity" web sites have a "DONATE" button to click -- but no "I NEED HELP" button. Go figure.
