- Her car damaged, her nerves shaken, the victim of an alleged group attack near the University of Chicago campus with her children in the back seat of her car talked exclusively with ABC7 Eyewitness News about the incident Friday night.
Police say two people were arrested and charged after the incident, but that woman says several dozen people were involved. Her two kids left covered in broken glass.
The encounter left several dents in the vehicle, the back window shattered and Susan Pedersen shaken.
"I'm very scared, very anxious, nervous. Just fearful," she said.
Friday night, broken glass still litters the pavement at 60th and King Drive across from Washington Park, where the attack took place around 9 p.m. Thursday night.
Pedersen says she had just dropped off a friend at the University of Chicago, with her daughter and son in the back seat. She said she stopped at a red light and found herself surrounded by several dozen young people.
"They were walking around both sides of the vehicle - in the front, in the back - and as they were walking across, they were hitting my car, using racial slurs and telling me that I didn't belong in their neighborhood because I was white," Pedersen said.
The group, all African-American, she says, kicked the vehicle and shook it violently, the kids in the back screaming.
Seriously? A pack of black teens pretty much destroying a car on a public highway because the occupants were white? What kind of world do we live in where a man dressed as a bat.... (sorry about that ....continuing).... where the media is allowed to report this sort of thing? Next thing you know they'll be telling everyone that something like 95% of black homicides are committed by another black person...and if word of that gets out....

One video was of a mother and daughter being jumped and beaten at a fast food restaurant by other teens. The other, was of a large woman, berating and swearing at a cashier at McDonalds while she was banging on the counter and whipping around anything she could get her hands on.
I think both videos exemplified the common behavior that people should see so they can understand what really goes on in the ghetto. (Oooops,I mean urban area)
Notice how I refrained from using any color when describing these "people". I tried to be as "politically correct" as I could - just like our great, local TV channels.
I would love to see and hear Goudie, Marin, Majers, and others describe it the way it should be described - these people were Chimping out, big time.

Never forget when felony review told me the victim has to be black and the offender white for hate crime charges.
No hate crime? Not according to our formal streaming video hate crime educational training! When a person is assaulted/attacked based solely on his/her racial, ethnic, religious, etc. identity, it is a hate crime. Victim even states they shouted racial slurs during the incident and said she didn't "belong in their neighborhood because she's white". Had this been a group of white kids doing this to a black driver, it would be national news. Same is true for the white guy who was beat to a bloody pulp by a group of blacks in Ohio. Only Hannity and Meagan Kelly have been covering the story, while the rest of the media covers the great SC flag controversy of 2015. What a joke.

I watched it last night and I could not believe they actually reported this. Just another bad report for the city.
Took a report awhile back for a woman who was battered on a cta train by a m/1 offender. Offender used racial slurs and made it very clear to victim this was being done because she was white. I made it a hate crime and sent to my m/1 Sgt who then kicked it back and told me to change the classification to simple battery. After changing it I sent it back but included the line...this report was initially classified as a hat crime but Sgt nameless #1234 asked for it to be changed. He wasnt too happy with it and wanted the added line removed. I refused. I am assuming it was eventually approced because I never heard anything more about it.

It's hard to understand how she could have just sat there, especially with her kids in the car. I wouldn't have hit the gas and gone in whatever direction was possible, regardless of which pos got in the way. If she had done that, would she have gotten in trouble? Surely that would have been self-defense...

"The" U.S. Supreme Court's leading case on "hate crimes" is Wisconsin v. Mitchell out of suburban Kenosha where Mitchell and his friends attacked a white kid because of his race and a unanimous Supreme Court upheld it.

Good point. Generally to charge a hate crime you need to have proof that the victim was selected because of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. Whether to charge it is the prosecutor's call. On the other hand, the police have the duty to gather sufficient evidence to support asking for one.

Several years ago, a group of teenage 1's beat up another group of younger 4's calling them racial names while beating them up. I made it a hate crime. My Sgt agreed. Dept of Human Services came out to the families of the 4's that sams night. No idea what happened after that. Probably got swept under the rug.
Look at the Democratics saying more gun control laws are needed after the South Carolina shooting. What are they saying after the San Francisco murder about the sanctuary city laws that let felons stay in this country with impunity? Nothing!

"I'm not a police officer" is obvious. Like the other poster said, if you were a police officer you would know about felony review. Police are free to charge anyone in Cook County with misdemeanors, but when it comes to felonies you have to call felony review and have some snot nose, "came in last in his law school class" States Attorney second guess you. They don't charge based on the facts of the crime, they charge based on the likelihood of winning.

We have a thing in Cook County called Felony Review. Most felonies have to be run by a Assistant States Attorney (ASA) This ASA usually cannot make a decision without calling a felony review supervisor. This supervisor, who is always a political hack, then makes the decision. The rest of the state outside of Cook County goes by Probable cause and does not have to jump through hoops to get felony charges. Cook county goes by whether they can win the case on a slam dunk and if it politically correct to do so. (See not charging Blacks with hate crimes for example Or always hitting the Police Officer with the highest charge even when the evidence does not support it.) The ASA does not follow the law and uses this thing they made up called Prosecutorial Discretion. The Judges, ASA's, defense Attorneys and Criminals do not have to follow the law in Cook County, only the Police have to.
I hope this answers your question. People seem to forget that the Police are only one part of the legal system. We are the most visible so thats why we get the blame when something goes wrong.

I used to call felony review and immediately ask for the denial #.
I have been retired for a wihile, so i may be wrong, but if felony review turns it down can' t you request the deputy to "overide" the decesion and make the charge a hate crime? I understand the deputy may not approve it but at least you have a name. If you get felony review's name and the CPD Deputy's name give it to the news. See what they do? Who knows, maybe, just maybe, someone will have to answer some questions. Just a thought.

In theory Felony Review is a good idea -- get the prosecutor involved in the case early. Done right, it helps weed out the garbage and also helps improve the cases that need attention and should be prosecuted aggressively. That's the theory.
In practice, however, senior prosecutors with experience -- those that ought to be giving the guidance -- are seldom doing Felony Review. Often experienced coppers know more than the still somewhat green lawyers who are.
I was in England and saw how their system works. The "Crown Prosecution Service" has prosecutors in the field similar to Felony Review. They don't charge every case but have to explain, in writing, their decisions and a copy goes to the constable. And if they need more to make a case they send back a checklist. They also have guidelines for charging (and not like if it's under or over so many grams, etc.) which basically say things like minor matters are minor and serious shit is serious shit but something that seems minor might be major to the people in the neighborhood and public policy might favor aggressive prosecution. Very impressive unlike Felony Review which is like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates: you never know what you're going to get.

Good point. Generally to charge a hate crime you need to have proof that the victim was selected because of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. Whether to charge it is the prosecutor's call. On the other hand, the police have the duty to gather sufficient evidence to support asking for one.
Not juveniles. That is on the Youth Dick…which takes away from all the anger towards the prosecutors. What do you call bottom 5% of the police academy? Officer.
How old were the teens? Were the Dets. called for CDTP over $500? I am probably guessing not. Typical 003.
Less than two miles from Obama residence , less than a mile from presidential library , where is the roof top reverend , Bobbie rush , rev. Jackson , father Flagler and all the alder creatures . No comments when criminals attack a helpless white lady and two young children .
This is considered normal behavior for teens in that area . Bet those kids are searching for their daddy , raised by grandma , baby mama on welfare . Another democratic success story .
Well, you know for damn sure if the media deigned to finally report something like this, it's probably happening enough that they can't possibly keep a lid on it anymore. It surprises me not one bit. I have been retired for a wihile, so i may be wrong, but if felony review turns it down can' t you request the deputy to "overide" the decesion and make the charge a hate crime? I understand the deputy may not approve it but at least you have a name. If you get felony review's name and the CPD Deputy's name give it to the news. See what they do? Who knows, maybe, just maybe, someone will have to answer some questions. Just a thought.

(b-5) Hate crime is a Class 3 felony for a first offense...if committed...
(4) in a public park... or
(6) on a public way within 1,000 feet of the real property comprising any location specified in clauses (1) through (4) of this subsection (b-5)."

Committed on the public way right next to a public park. Class 3 felony.
Misdemeanor of Felony, it doesn't matter if they were Juveniles. Juvenile court is a joke. The Judges there let kids out who have multiple warrants. You can arrest the same kid 2 to 3 times a week, he can get detained, and be let out the next day. But hey, Toni Prekwinkle thinks too many blacks are in jail. She seems to forget that over 90 percent of the time other blacks are the victims. And since the victim in this incident was white, well, I'm sure Toni thinks she deserves it because of her "White Privilege."
When the deputy overrides the SA the charge is downgraded in court.

You seem to have no idea how Cook County works - the police don't get to make that decision. It's made by Anita Alvarez and her people under the guise of "Felony Review."
