How's This for Irony?

Anyone listening to the hourly broadcasts on all the radio zones about the Heat Emergency this weekend?
  • the standard declaration of "cooling centers are open" and "check on the elderly, stay hydrated" reminders, every hour on the hour.
And then the great advice from the minds at HQ:
  • wear loose fitting clothing and remember to take frequent breaks
Meanwhile, don't forget to cover those tattoos with long sleeves, and wear the required tie if you have the long sleeves, and by god, you better have the crown-hat-solar-heat-collector on your head if you appear in public.

Meanwhile, we're busy answering questions from the Watch Operations Lieutenant about why we're in the station every 90 minutes, trying to get a taste of air conditioning since our 123,000 mile jalopy hasn't cooled anything since 2012.

It's amazing that the Department doesn't follow the advice its giving out.

For you newbies, once hydraulic fluid leaches into the bare

Naw. Business as usual would be more like it. The powers that be broadcast their concern for the rank and file by telling them to wear loose fitting clothing and to take frequent breaks so they would have deniability when some blue shirt passes out behind the wheel of that 123,000 mile "jalopy" and takes out that corner filled with honor students who just stepped off the EL train looking to do good deeds for the day.

Looks like our gp is home again today
Just check this blog for all of my updates
She has been home from work 10 of he last 15 work days
Hey, anyone interested can check those A&A's = she's marked present for all of her days she's been home
And how do I know she's home = vehicle outside her house and she has left
I live close enough to know
If IAD wanted to do a Real investigation, just subpoena her security tapes. They will verify she's home!
Also, for all you suffering in the heat, she is the one responsible for that recommendation to the Sup for that Calea cert.
She's the one leading the R&D Calea team
While she sits home collecting a paycheck for zero work and you suffer in the heat and humidity in you broken down vehicles and long sleeved shirts

The Department- oh hell, the City as a whole only says what its supposed to say, not having any intention of doing any of it. What a lot of supervisors, and other POs complain about is like everything else, when the same coppers are in the station over and over on paper, on personals, for lunch, or on a follow up or any other host of excuses, and that probably all in one tour. The same people use every reason, then they go in, stay down and hang out, leaving everyone else to answer the jobs on their beat and do the paper on jobs they should have been answering. All that does is pass the work onto their co-workers, but that's their intention in the first place. So when it comes time for a copper to come in and cool off in the AC for 20-30 minutes, the bosses and even other POs are skeptical and already aggravated at the ones who are just hanging out. I would hope though that a little common sense would kick in and on the hot, humid heat advisory type days, the get them the hell out of here philosophy would be put on hold, or maybe just be more watchful of the ones who abuse it regularity. Ah, common sense, a strange conception to so many.

It's 2015. We have AC in just about most cars. We have vest carriers which helps quite a lot. Now we have the money box to check. So what is the point in bringing back the old days? You don't see us still driving cars from 30 years back. Things change usually for the better but with this order, we are going backwards. Common sense says that we should be improving conditions, not making it worst for cops to work.

Let the bosses right you up! it cost the city time and money to right up grievances. Or if you get heat exhaustion from working the medical will also rectify that problem.

The most common signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

Confusion.
Dark-colored urine (a sign of dehydration)
Dizziness.
Fainting.
Fatigue.
Headache.
Muscle or abdominal cramps.
Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

your doctor will give you a note for 3-5 days to rest and drink fluids he may even think it is a stroke??? figure out the cost per day...

New security plan in Venezuela targets gang violence, but opposition smells politics

July 20, 2015

"Last week Venezuelans received with a mix of surprise, relief and skepticism the news of an early morning police raid into one of the most violent neighborhoods of west Caracas, home to a slew of heavily armed gangs.

"The takeover of Cota 905 ended up with 15 gang members dead and 134 arrested, according to official reports, which described the operation as part of a new security plan called “Operación de Liberación y Protección del Pueblo” (Operation Liberation and Protection of the People) to be implemented in the areas of the country deemed the most unsafe.

"Even when Venezuela qualifies as the second most violent country in the world behind Honduras, political analysts from the opposition think that the government of Nicolas Maduro is focusing on the security issue only to recover its dwindling approval ratings -- now down to less than 30 percent across the nation.

"Oswaldo Ramírez, a local political consultant, told Fox News Latino the new plan will most likely focus on urban areas where Chavismo is losing track. Cota 905 is one of them, part of an electoral district where two of the 167 National Assembly representatives are up for election on December 6.

“Maduro is already on campaign mode,” Ramírez said.

"During Cota 905 raid, which lasted approximately nine hours, authorities recovered 20 stolen cars, 12 guns, 2 rifles and 2 grenades. More than 250 security officials from the National Guard and the police participated in the operation, officials said, noting that all the fatalities belonged to a gang called “El Coqui.”

Post about cycling in the hot -- no dig intended. I got to go out in shorts, white T, white hat, and was dripping to where you slip on the handlebars + brake levers. Nothing new...but you are dying in down-jacket quality ballistic vest in summer, longs, hot dark hat. Just criticizing city -- they put out this "check on the elderly" number and then run off to Grand Beach or wherever, like Daley did in '95. Almost 300 dead in ONE DAY.

Bothers me still more than I can even articulate -- I guess I did like a "one-man memorial ride" 'cause everyone either was busy working or -- the "non-workers" -- just don't care. That '95 deal was another Eastland for us in this city, but like some writers said, was forgotten as soon as the temp dipped.

One guy can do so much. Talking with an elderly lady, looking who came by, yeah, she had support from her across-the-street, on-the-corner neighbors. OK. It's the ones up in apts who have damned good reason to be scared of everything that you don't hear about 'til it's too late.

Pray for the dead.

...and enjoy every morning of this wonderful life.

God bless all here.

72hr rule went to 48. TRR's were added. CL's # were added. Car cameras, GPS, probation went from 12months to 18. I have to write my entire GOCR narrative instead of just PC on my arrest report. I sometimes have to add more lines about computer checks on my arrest report than the actual narrative! I get asked why I didn't write N/C clear when I arrest a guy for a warrant. I used to get Out of Grade pay for certain duties. We never inventoried prisoner property. I didn't have to enter contact cards into the computer. I used to be able to lock up bangers for weed. Lock-up was staffed by P.O's. and there were a lot more men working the desk and COS. There was a citywide unit that could be called to kick a$$ if someone shot at Police. We had a fully staffed crime lab. Heck, we were fully staffed all around! Cr#'s weren't published.

I was treated like an adult.

Hi people, Missy here. I don't have tattoos and don't like seeing them on a human body. You look like circus people and they scare me. I was on the board and voted NO Tattoos and new PPO' will be not hired if they have one. If you don't like a long sleeve shirt, get the tattoos - cartoons removed. I am sure you will feel more normal without them.
I was always afraid of clowns and the ones had these on their arms and legs.
I am still making sure you people get the contact cards right. Today I had to wear a wool pull over because it was so cold in headquarters. I don't evem use a a/c in my take home chevy, yes it has a few miles on it -4,999
Be good people and stay cool.

My first beat car was a 1984 Ford, beat 1433, windows with cranks to wind the windows up and down. And no A/C. Today that would merit it's own blog thread about how miserable and irresponsible it was of the city to expect us to drive around in some jalopy like that.

Dents all over the car, blue gumballs on top. Holes in the floor. Tire that had been flat since Ronald Reagan hosted Death Valley Days. One day we were going to a man with a gun call on Ashland near Division and I opened the driver door into a bus going by. So long door. I never saw that classic police car again. It was perfect in all respects, hot in the summer and cold in the winter and the floor leaked when it rained. I couldn't imagine who to complain to. Other cars were worse.

What district did he command , was he a fair boss , when acting ads how did he classify shootings ?
Did he have a few to many house cats in his office ?

He types really really slow, not much of a speller either.

I don't care for many of the new Sergeants, but sue the Sgt.? How is this the Sgt's fault? No one said that you have to wear your long sleeves, get an elastic sleeve and quit whining. The pain of getting the tattoo hurt more than wearing an elastic sleeve. I get it though, the supe decided to change the rules in the middle of the game. Maybe one of the lawsuits/ injunctions will stick.

Hey 1217 I call bs on your comment about the first five floors A/c because no bosses were above that. Seems to me the lst Dep and all the bosses in patrol were on 6. Youth Cmdr. on 8. IAD, v/c, narco and several other bosses above 5. So once again some guy talking out his butt hole.

Nothing changes. For years, only the first five floors of Police H.Q @ 1121 S. State St. were air conditioned. The reason? No bosses were located n the upper floors.

7/21/2015 12:17:00 AM
There were a few office air conditioners in upper floors, but the windows in most offices were former factory windows that did not allow for an air conditions. One thing that was done was on the 9th floor, Organized Crime Section, where the Deputy Chief had all of the telephones tapped and recorded. The scandal was covered up as he was forced to retire when he refused to take the urine test. The technician who bugged all of the phones retired and moved out west. The department, presumably, destroyed the box of tapes found.

Used to have some SQUADROLS. Like, enough. Remember one lovely afternoon -- just like today -- and news radio reporting that airliner was in trouble and circling out in the pattern to use up fuel until attempting a landing.

016, wagon went down and staged in the old Safco parking lot on NW Hwy, waiting to hear...

Turned out OK...but still puts my heart in my mouth.

Yes, you would think that things are better in these modern times. Yes, I am a retired " old timer" . But, when I came on none of our cars had air, we wore wool pants, but had summer mesh caps. Times are sure rough.

You also had free medical, middle class housing that was affordable, schools that were still worth attending, comraderie amongst your peers, no car camera, no body camera, no gps. So yeah, times are tough. At least let us wear short sleeves in exchange for losing everything else that was good on this job. Oh. Almost forgot about the attack on our pensions...

Well hey now!
All this cynicism up in heah!

The city has The Policeman's well being at heart.
...Until they don't. Which is usually... Well... Err... Uhmm...

Dammit! You know what we mean!
(^;

Y'all do y'all.
Fuck these fools out here.

Invest in an insulated lunch box...

Buy a bundle of microfiber shop towels and make your
own cooling wipes.

A big zip-lock bag.
Add some water, a little rubbing alcohol, a half squirt of liquid
hand soap and a couple of towels. (Wash the damn things first
and if you machine dry, don't use those dryer sheets)

Keep them in the insulated bag.
Use as needed for a refresh throughout the day.

Use high SPF sun block!

Invest in a mesh round crown.
Invest in bug repellent.

Outdoor lifestyle outfits do have long sleeve shirts (+50 SPF) for summer
wear... We have some. Reinforced elbows and in the proper
color, they wouldn't be so bad for field wear. Took a family member
to the FAR south suburbs for the IROCC shoot. Outdoors, "soupy"
conditions and it was tolerable. Wicking and fast drying. Again, don't
use those dryer sheets. Hello Uniform Committee?

Just some random survival thoughts.

Stay Cool Y'all.

Well I suggest being that I use to work on a farm 10 hours a day

Yall need large 10 inch brim straw hats with badge pinned up on the dome and large 3inch checkerboard ribbon around the base.

That would do the job and get you some press coverage.

And about the long sleeve crap, I would suggest blue mesh sport jersey material, large loose 3/4 sleeves with the words "good guys" written across the top of the back and lose the ties just go with a v-neck style.

OR you can get your legal representatives to call OSHA on the administration and file a general lawsuit.

I still want to know why we are the only city department required to cover up tattoos? I go on jobs and the firemen and paramedics are fully sleeved with a nice cotton tshirt..wtf...fgmac

7/20/2015 11:13:00 AM

Because no other City department is attempting to get certification from CALEA. That's why.

And whats so important about the CALEA certification. CPD has lived without it for over a century Its just a BS excuse to try and get rid of tatoos If the CPD is not certified by CALEA what will happen Nothing

You are an idiot. CALEA is no more that an online scam. Its like an online college. Getting a certification from them means nothing. It is totally useless. Just a way for the CPD to try and get rid of tatoo. Case should hinge on the fact that you were hired with them and they were allowed, you should be grandfathered in and no new or additional tatoos allowed. You cant change the rules in the middle of the game. Website below, we really dont need that CALEA certification If the CFD going after a new certification. Of course not, its not necessary

You are right here. Liquid fabric softeners are essentially a wax emulsion. Lubricates between the fibers to give that "soft" feeling, but makes the clothes hotter by blocking the pores of the fabric! Dryer sheets the same. Ironing (not too many people anymore) has the same effect; seals that fabric down.

See the pro landscapers, cemetery workers going on a hot day, they wear white hats with brim, white cloth tucked in hat to cover neck, old long-sleeve white shirt, big and loose.

Glad it's in the 70s today! "Good sleeping weather," so I got a little extra.

16 years on and so much has changed, for the worse;

I used to know what the ranks were, and we ALL knew at least two of the "high ranking" bosses. There was a Street Deputy, and he was like GOD. I've worked everywhere and I've never even heard of any of these current guys. There was at least one old time Sgt. on every watch, and you never bothered him, you would just listen.

We used to have watch parties, flower funds etc. There used to be these things called part 1 arrests and you were judged by quality not quantity (sometimes). You usually had to truly earn an Honorable Mention and they were always read at roll call. If you had two rows of ribbons it meant you were the real deal (usually). Roll call used to be fun. The job was fun and a real adventure!

You had access to a different world just because of a magical star! At the end of the day, you took that magical star off and went home to be Daddy or coach. I didn't constantly worry about being sued, or wondering if I was caught on film swearing at a bad guy that day. I didn't worry about the media, or all the other added stresses that are so much more prevalent in today's climate. I think we all do this now.

Nothing stays the same, but things have gotten really bad in the last 8 years.

Hi people, Missy here again - Wow, you people just want to break the rules. When I a P.O. Parking ticket GURU on Wabash av in o01 I wore my bluse in the summer to look sharp if the boses rode by or our beloved mayor Daley.
My uncle Tom Byrne, always a big worker told me that everyone should be in a blouse and tie in the summer. He said, People will love us more on the west side.
For that officer that asked if me or my sister were on extended medical. Answer is NO people !! I once had a little cold in sub zero weather writing parkers, I never hit the medical and sis Bonnie had to get a needed rest a 6 months and uncle Tom put here in a place that keeps people secure until they get rested. But uncle Tom said she did not have to go talk to those nurses in medical.

Got to go jog in bucktown trying to get done to 180 pounds, I gave up ice cream to help.

Love you all and get those tattoos cut out already. They don't look nice. If you want to feel cool, write a book of parkers for the city, it will make you feel swell with pride.
