Officer in Trouble?

This appeared in the comment section yesterday. We've combined the separate comments into a single post from Densey Cole's mother:
  • SCC: [...] I am the proud mother of P.O. Densey J.Cole II who was responding to a call in the 022 Dist. on May27,2009 which resulted in him becoming a quadrapalegic. He owned his own home in Bevelry. In the 1st three years after his accident and living in an apartment, the city was having contractors look over his home in order to make it a home to accomadate his needs. During all that time he was making the monthly payment on the home. The city then tells him they won't put the money into the home, that he needs to sell it. As we all know the year that P.O.Cole bought his home the market was at an all time high. When it came time to sell it, the home got sold for exactly what was owned and real estate fee to the agent and broker. He also then had to put all of his furniture into storage where it still remains for nearly 3 years at the rate of $200.00 per month.

Never was the home being forclosed on nor was it a short sale. For as long as I live I will never forget Chairman Edward Burke coming to Christ Hospital the day of the accident. After discussing Densey's condition he told me that he built Jim Mullen's house and would do the same for Densey so I should not worry. The city takes care of their own. Well heres the bomb shell. My son is being evicted July 8th,2015 Wed because the city has not paid the utilities and the apt. complex has been fighting with them for the past 2 years. The city was signing 6 month leases, but apparently not reading them. Densey since this past May 20, 2015 has had 2 surgeries and now has 8 days to pack, find a place to live. I retired from this job with 22 years, his Dad retired with 29 years. My son went to work just like you guys and gals do, God forbid if it happens to you. I have contacted the FOP,

The Committee of Finance, The Police Memorial Foundation, Alderman Burke to no avail.I am begging each and every one of you for help for my son. He unfortunately will not be the only officer that this will happen to because of the type of job we did/do. He nor his family are not asking for anything more than what anyone should get in this situation and that is a right to live his life with dignity. The clock is ticking. I am asking you all to step forward and do the right thing and be a strong voice for my son and any future officers who may need this help. This is a disgrace that we cannot allow to happen, a 44 quadrapalegic CPD officer who had 17 years on the job. He woke up, got dressed, went to roll call, took a job and has never know a day of peace yet. My e-mail is weezee550@comcast.net. Respond to this call, blessings to all of you. Louise
Has anyone been in recent contact with Officer Cole? It certainly sounds like he's been getting the short end of the stick from the city. Dignity shouldn't have this high a price.

Maybe Phat Phil can forgo his salary this year and help him out. Or maybe not that six figure pension only goes so far.

I know that all news media is shit. But! If any of your readers has access to an ear within that shitshow, they can do a great deal of good by passing the news on - an officer who was crippled in the line of duty being evicted is the kind of news that crosses party lines.

Very slightly off-topic: holy shit is Chicago bleeding money...

It is appalling and disgusting the way this Officer has been treated. We have a City Council that is "honoring" the supposed victims of the Burge era as it comes to light with the efforts of Martin Prieb who has shown that Burge, et. al. were railroaded. The Council gave payments & free college tuition to the survivors. Then the same group won't help a true police hero? We can hear of a new Ferris wheel at Navy Pier costing several million $$ but no help for a paralyzed policeman?

SCC, you are acting as an ombundsman for several serious issues in the past few weeks - Thank You!

i only wish that our FOP, Mayor, City Council, and the Police Memorial Foundation would respond as diligently as you have.
We should ensure that the motto "Never Forget" is assiduously applied to this frightening scenario.

"There but for the grace of God go you and I."

But the city will pay millions to a non working ghetto dog who has a 20 page sheet.
This is totally shit. The city played this shit with the late Det. Joe Airhart after beingshot in the LOD and then suffered for years and the damage killed him.
Ald. Burke is the kind of guy who would not let this happen. Hillard was no help to the kin of our brother Joe Airhart.
If Rahm is aware, be sure it will be done right for out brother. He does not play that shit with copper' getting the shaft when it's LOD..
I hope this will be done soon. and the brother catches a break.

I had the privilege of supervising Densey and his dad when I worked CTA Special Employment. Both of these men were outstanding police officers, dedicated, professional, compassionate and realistic. Densey was tall and strong; to see him bound to a wheelchair and paralyzed was difficult to grasp, I cannot imagine what his parents have endured. And, unfortunately, we should not be surprised to see the treatment he is receiving from the City. The City and America have changed in recent years. The Pride and Integrity that once governed the way we conducted ourselves and our City is lost somewhere in the past. Today we are a Disposable Society, and we throw things away when they no longer suit us or work. Why fix them, if it is cheaper to just replace them? That applies to people, we just throw them away unless they have "Clout". Densey did not have "Clout". Everyone please take note, this injury was the result of an officer responding to a call. Densey was not shot, he was the victim of a vehicle crash. If you are hiding in an office at 35th St. with your "Operator's Beard", this will not happen to you. But any working cop could end up like Densey, and the City may not be around to help. Think about this, when you "speed" to that next in progress call. Officer Cole is alone, confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. YOU could be next. "G"

Take heed all you Officers, this is how the city and department REALLY cares for you! They don't give a shit about you. If something happens to you, you are on your own despite all the BS on how the "city takes care of its own". I have seen the city and the department do BS like this to other Officers before and, unfortunately, I will see it happen again.

Ironic that the current FOP President Dean Angelo is currently on DUTY DISABILITY STATUS and it appears under his helm all officers hurt in the line of duty are getting the short end of the stick.

The CPD has been forcing back numerous police officers back to light duty work (at call back) who have legitimately been deem DUTY DISABILITY, some of these officers have been off work a decade or more.

The Police Memorial Foundation can afford to pay the clouted 6 figure yearly salaries but will not financially help Officer Cole?

Folks, we are truly at end times... You smoke crack and have 10 kids, you get a house, monthly check, food stamps, free medical and much more....

Now they want to evict a quadriplegic officer injured in the line of duty? The FOP should be all over this, organize a march on city hall and bring the heat on that shyster of a mayor Ali Rhama and the 50 thieves. It's no surprise that Ed Burke can't be trusted to help this officer. Burke is a politician and speaks with forked tongue and only looks out for himself and his cronies. Maybe he could use some of the millions his law firm makes on city and state business or some of the millions in"Political Donations " he has stashed in HIS FUND to help this officer or maybe make some calls. It's a shame but not a surprise how our officers are treated. The big question is why does one officer get a house built with city assistance and another officer gets evicted. Maybe the royalty at city hallneeds $$$for a park.

Since Dean Angelo has been the president of the union, I, Densey Cole II, have spoken to him all of 3 times. Yesterday, I spoke with him for the first time in months. The conversation was casual and light hearted. According to him, he stated, "I wish there was something I could do for you." The only people that have ever negotiated on my behalf in regards to me being evicted are Phil Cline and Mara Georges. The union has never, I repeat has NEVER been my advocate in regards to my housing situation currently. To the best of my knowledge. The only time I spoke to anyone from the FOP in regards to my eviction was yesterday and that was Dean Angelo when he stated, "I wish there was something I could do for you". The only arrangements that have been made is my attorney, from the Chicago Police Memorial, Mara Georges, will be representing me in EVICTION COURT in DuPage County Courthouse Room 2003 at 1330 hrs on 8JULY. If anybody wants any REAL information, feel free to call me on my cell anytime, 773-610-3775.

A STATEMENT FROM THE COMMITTEE ON FINANCE

Officer Cole is living every day with a devastating injury that has forever changed his life. We have great respect and sympathy for him and we have consistently acted to remain very flexible in numerous instances given the circumstances of his case.
Since 2009, the Finance Committee has paid more than $5.8 million for his medical care resulting from this devastating injury and made sure that Officer Cole’s housing accommodations are completely handicapped accessible.

The Committee on Finance has routinely paid his rent six months in advance and remains current in those payments while he seeks a permanent home.

The non-paid bills in question relate solely to unpaid utility bills which the Committee has advised are his responsibility. Officer Cole has yet to act to request arbitration or mediation of this dispute which is his right under the police contract. We would welcome a decision on his part to avail himself of this process so that these questions may be resolved.

For more information contact Donal Quinlan, media liaison, at 312-744-6237.

While this tragedy goes on...the city seems to have the bucks to buy advertising time for "The 606 Trail" on radio stations.

Why does a three-mile-long nuisance with glaring lights, late-night noise, and no place to take a leak except over the railing onto people's cars need to be pumped up like this? People are already moving away from it. It's not like it does anything except cost money.

Don't know the Cole family and I'm assuming this is legit so let's do the right thing. If someone has the means to start the account do it and post. 10,000 officers active or retired contribute $20 and that's $200,000. That's a couple of drinks or ice cream for the kids once. That should pay the rent and some bills for a while. We all need to stick together now more then ever. It's still a good job and for most of us it's all we have. We need to make the most of it, for our sake and our families.

Moral is at an all time low. Leadership changes are truly in order. Hopefully OReilly takes on this story, and only then will the city budge. Like when a copper ran over that dead guy in the street who got hit by an unk car, the streets lights were turned on the next day, only after being out for months. Statement from the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation:

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation has worked with Densey Cole on an ongoing basis since his tragic accident to provide him and his family the support they need. This includes financial assistance, housing support and tuition for his daughters' education.

Additionally, the CPMF has provided Densey with an attorney to represent him in the eviction proceedings and in his dealings with the Committee on Finance.

The CPMF will continue to advocate for and provide assistance to Densey Cole and our other officers who are catastrophically injured during the performance of their duty to serve and protect the city and its residents.

Since 2007, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation has provided over $5.6 million dollars to the families of Chicago police officers killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty.

The story is not entirely true ... this is all over the fact that he has not paid his utilities which is his responsibility not the city's ... Channel 2 followed up on this and also found out that the Memorial foundation hired him a lawyer to help him rectify the situation ... don't be too quick to judge until you learn the whole story ...

Phil Cline. Everyone knows your pulling a quarter million or more bilking the Police memorial foundation and pulling down a similar pension with the city. They should help, but I cant donate to a fund that pays a politician like Phil Cline that much. I know there are many good hearted people that will help if the help goes directly to the afflicted officer. Where is the chaplains unit on this?
I my self can part with a hundred bucks and so can a lot of others. As soon as a fund is set up we can help one of our own. I worked with Densey some years before he was hurt. He really is a good guy.

Just to Clear the Air
The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation has worked with Densey Cole on an ongoing basis since his tragic accident to provide him and his family the support they need. This includes financial assistance, housing support and tuition for his daughters' education.
Additionally, the CPMF has provided Densey with an attorney to represent him in the eviction proceedings and in his dealings with the Committee on Finance.
The CPMF will continue to advocate for and provide assistance to Densey Cole and our other officers who are catastrophically injured during the performance of their duty to serve and protect the city and its residents.
Since 2007, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation has provided more than $5.6 million dollars to the families of Chicago police officers killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty.

Many years ago ( more then I care to remember), we used to pass the hat at roll call to help out a fellow officer who was having financial trouble either from on duty or off duty injury. And, back then, there were no retirement parties for those who finished their life tours. The retiree just turned his star and shield in at the desk on his last tour and maybe a few of the guys took him out for a few beers. I was hoping things have changed by now. Maybe not. I firmly believe that a police officer, a firefighter or a soldier who is injured so severely that they cannot continue working and their life activates are severely altered should be made whole financially and want for little during their lives. Burke likes to brag that he is one of us, but his financial committee has given many injured officers a hard time when it came to paying for medical treatment. I just don't trust him.

I'm reading a lot of comments on social media saying DC is responsible for the past due bills since they're utility bills. The city has paid millions for medical and rent bills. Hmm but the city has paid the utility bills in the past. And the city forced DC to sell his beverly house and move to the suburbs. DC was injured in the line of duty. The city should pay all of his bills including utilities

This is exactly how the city takes care you when you are injured and it is disgusting. Many are being forced back to light duty while those who were not IOD are being forced off light duty and on to ordinary disability or forced to retire. Basically, if you can talk and pee, they want you back no matter what and they don't care how much you suffer throughout the day. I hope something can be done to help him because this is totally disgusting!

To the person who asked about the scum stealing Densey's gun, wallet, etc: You are correct. The crash happened at 98th and Halsted. After Densey's vehicle was struck by the other driver, he was pinned in the car unable to move. Several local pieces of $h*t seized the opportunity. They ran up on him, pushing his body around (possibly causing the damage to his spine), they stole his gun, his wallet, and anything else they could get off him. They also threatened to kill him with his own weapon. Densey, unable to move, pleaded with them to spare his life telling them he had children, etc. The thugs then ran off with his property. The idiots were filmed by several witnesses cell phone cameras and I believe were eventually caught and charged. I am unaware of what happened with their court proceedings. This is Cook County though so I'm sure they're out there on the streets wreaking havoc as I type this.

You get notices about being delinquent on utilities and you just ignore and assume the city is "taking care of it?" We all know that officers have gone into collections from IOD injuries, so this is truly not that different.

If the city had been paying for utilities and stopped, then that's wrong.

But is DC ever going to get a house that he can use or is this gonna go on for the rest of his life??

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is a joke. So how much money did you give out? Give us the fucking numbers? My wife and I donated generously to you until 2010. That is when we found out that Phil Cline makes a huge salary. That is when my brother who is a CPA told me that they have to fill out some income tax returns and make it available for the public. So why won't you publish those tax forms on your own website? You guys are leeches. You have co-opted the whole St. Jude event/march with your run to remember and the license plates. Giving yourself an air of credibility. You have no credibility. From now on, when one of us is injured or killed, we can raise our own money via Go Fund Me. While you the Memorial Foundation can go fuck yourself. Greed knows no bounds. But there has to be a certain line. You are no better than those Christian charities that supposedly gave money to poor kids in third world countries. If you have nothing to hide then open up your books.

Thanks much, you describe it just as I remembered, just couldn't recall the ofc. name.

I wonder if the sons-of-bitches had the traffic lights cocked to cause an accident, and were there waiting. Like you say, in this county it's catch-and-release fishing for vicious offenders.

This kind of thing is why I say that "half of the city is unusable." Get a flat tire in some areas, you're lunch meat. One driver lost control of his car, ran up and damaged a porch, and was instantly beaten to death.

"Choose Chicago!"

Morning folks, just a note to clear the air in regards to the utilities. 1st I've never signed nor have I been involved with the lease signing or negotiations . When I came home from Colorado in late October 2009 the city put me in an apartment next to the Hyatt on Wacker. The city took care of everything from furnishings to ALL utilities including cable and phone. I showered in a closet. I moved from there to oak brook terrace in March or 2010. I have a copy of the lease from here signed by COF that clearly states the utilizes are INCLUDED. The next lease, 6 months later, shows the same.

Let's also remember I was current and paying for a house the city swore they'd take care of making it handicapped equipped. I have the proposal from the company the city consulted with. After a back and forth thing Marla Kaiden stated to me while in my attorneys office in the presence of my mom and sister, mark coughIin esq. Dan Pasquale esq. That it's not "fiduciary responsible to put the $350k into the home in light of the housing market". She told me to sell it and the committee would build me or convert an existing home. So that's how that went. Incidentally at this meeting I was basically under a contempt order if I didn't sign over the auto ins from the vehicle that struck me. It was $250k from farmers. The city subrogated the funds in court. Hmmmm

So ask ur self should I have had to pay 2 sets of utilities?? All my personal effects have been in storage, at my cost, since I short sold the home in July of 2012 I think. I can't remember the exact date. I had to hire and PAY for the movers. I showered in a public bathroom in the lobby of my building next to the pool for get this, 3, THREE, TRÉS years. Just short of having to demean my self anymore with extreme begging, Marc Couighlin esq the city's attorney "approved"the spending in March of 2013. I had to get naked sit in a wheelchair nude and covered with the towels get on the public elevator go down 4 stories past the front door in the MEN'S restroom to do my toilette there and repeat the steps backward in my apartment. I could tell you all the crazyness but I can't type for shit. Just call me. 773-610-3775

Thnx for all the support in this matter. Thnx for GoFundMe donations.
Let's keep it real here the Police Memorial has tried their best. Dawn Dolan totally hooked me up with help in 2012!! And Phil is trying but let's not hang the guy if the city won't negotiate. Tnx Phil.

So who wants to talk about utilities!!!!!

There should be a full investigation into the Finance Director and the handling of Densey Cole's situation. Like Densey, many times before Finance has failed members of the police department and it has gotten swept under the rug. The finance personnel do not always identify themselves or do not wear name tags to pin point who gave the wrong information either. Things need to change and stop their sneakiness. The failure of finance is critical as when wrong information is given by finance, costs our police families insurance coverage which it's a critical need for newborns. Also, the Finance director is very clear and they do not hide that they hate the police. So, why if they hate the police they are allowed to run a critical part that affects the police? For years this has been going on. Hospitals in the past have donated medical care to police families when Finance fails. That's awful that outside agencies have had to step in to help our police families. Please put a stop to this poor treatment and delivery of service to the police. And the only reason this happens it's because the powers to be, when the scandals happen they just sweep it under the rug. It's time to replace that police hater. Yesterday it has been defenseless newborns of police families, today is Densey Cole and tomorrow it could be your family affected.

My Father was handicapped and I was able to retrofit his home in Norridge for 50k. That includes a ramp, bathrooms& kitchen. Kiwanis provided a wheel chair elevator at no cost.
You are a member of FOP 7 they still have a responsibility to intervene on your behalf, contact the State & National Lodges regarding Angelos outright refusal to assist you a member in good standing. You are living the nightmare we all dread, and this is another example of how the City treats Officers catastrophically injured on Duty.

7/03/2015 12:25:00 PM

The problem is that the city has the right to take any settlement and any money you receive because they are paying the medical bills, etc. In this case, they are paying his living expenses and he is receiving a standard duty disability pension. I have to believe that any money collected would only go back to the city which is probably why the GoFundMe has been shut down. I am also amazed that family, especially family who are retired police officers would allow the situation to reach the point where he is facing eviction for not paying the utilities. Pay the utilities and hen follow the proper procedure to get the situation rectified rather than face eviction. Anyone who has dealt with a injury and disability is well aware of the hard fought battles to get anything , including your pension hearing. Many of us have dealt with a "no pay status" , unpaid medical bills by the city, lack of tests. etc. It is a frustrating nightmare and you expect to be taken care of when you are injured but that is not the case. You are left behind both financially as well as by the people your worked with.

Yes, Good question. Anything over $10,000 is reported to IRS. $400,000 is a lot of money to pay back utilities and since he is not a 501(c) organization, he will pay taxes on at as additional income even while he is on duty disability.

Don't get me wrong, Densey needs help and we want to help, him but there is always a BUT! Don't be surprised if he is audited on where the money is going. I will donate when I'm convinced only Densey will be using the money for himself.
