Free Garbage Pickup?

The media is already framing the debate so Rahm can ram this through the City Council:
  • Suburbanites have grown accustomed to paying a garbage-collection fee in addition to their property tax bill. It looks like Chicagoans will soon face a similar pain in the wallet.

One week after his budget team held closed-door meetings with aldermen, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is all but saying that a garbage-collection fee is coming to Chicago.

  • Chicago would almost certainly have to start smaller to get residents of 600,000 single-family homes, two-, three-flats and four-flats used to the idea of paying for a service they’ve grown accustomed to getting for free.
Free? Then why were we paying property taxes all these years? We figured that covered an entire swath of city services - lights, streets, cops, fire, etc. Now we find out it was free?

:::cough cough bullshit! cough cough:::

Any guesses as to how impassable the alleys become in certain neighborhoods where the residents already don't use garbage receptacles provided by the city? What about the exploding rodent populations? And that fire pit we weren't using much lately just got a new lease on life as a backyard incinerator. Hell, we might start fly dumping on the Ryan coming in to work.

Whoa, I thought once you got something it couldn't be taken away. If I have to pay for garbage then I DEMAND that those on the Government Tit take a reduction in benefits. I'm talking about those individuals with Bull Shit (I stress BS): Asthma, learning disabilities, over weight, etc. LINK card/SSI abusing shit. Give me $500 a month for food and a half dozen free cell phones cuz I also would like to drive a brand new SUV every other year

I also demand that these liquor stores that buy a half million in liquor from the wholesalers every month start proving they are selling and paying taxes on a half million dollars of sold booze. I bet the books show hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal converted LINK funds. The lost tax revenue right there is staggering.

Stop paying for relatives to baby sit their own flesh and blood.

Anyone smoking dope or using or selling drugs should immediately lose their benefits for life. I have to work 40% harder so some piece of shit can get high with my tax deductions?

Also stop paying these slum lords $1200 a month or more on a Section 8 where you collect nothing from your tenant in exchange for them not complaining about their shitty apartment you couldn't get $400.00 a month for.

Not a cop, but I read the blog to get the real fucking news. This is straight up bullshit. Everyone in Chicago pays some form of tax and this is out of control now. What is the purpose of Streets and San then if not to pick up nasty garbage? I never wanted to do that for a living but evidently there are well paying gigs with pension for this and it comes out of the main operating budget. Now we have to pay for pickup? There will be areas overflowing with rodents and this is all because the do nothing alderfools are chasing pennies. Again no one is looking at reducing the hundreds of no show gigs that pay hefty salary and pension. Zero movement on the massive CPS budget that clearly outlines theft and deception. Nothing about the theft of overtime at OEMC, yes I said it. No fucking way a human can work 60-70 hour weeks for years and not pay a price physically. Someone is cooking the time cards. But then again I can now make fuck you money and not put up with this, others cannot. Its a damn shame. In high school we had to read the book Boss by Mike Royko, evidently we are now living in the fucking sequel.

Hey Rahmulus-Does that mean that homeowners in quiet neighborhoods will not see garbage pickups since a former CPD boss/ now Commissioner will divert the Streets & San staff to Blighted Areas who will merely toss their trash out "da winnow?" You see that mentality with the diversion of police to blighted areas that do not want law enforcement - so Williams will apply this mismanagement skill to Streets & San.

Then Rahmulus can send out Inspectors who will cruise the quiet areas and write citations just like the Revenue clowns who will only venture to non-Amish areas to ticket the good citizens. And Rahmulus will get "Mo Money" - none of which will go to the pensions.

The city is gentrifying at an increasingly high rate. The people that are well to do don't mind paying a small garbage collection fee. The people who are just getting by are upset about it. In the long run, this is good for the city because it will run the poor people out and more rich people will then gentrify the poorer neighborhoods. More and more city neighborhoods are being gentrified and property values now have gone past the 2006 peak prices. Proving that the city is the place where people want to move to. People don't want to move to cookie cutter, boring and bland suburbia. They want to live in a modern city where dining, cultural and entertainment opportunities are plentiful. The garbage fee is a short term nuisance but a long term gain.

I do NOT need an alderman, a County rep, a state senator, a state representative, a US senator, a US rep, a mayor, a governor and a President all representing me. It won't matter to this regime whether you use your garbage cans or dump your trash in the middle of the nearest park, they are still going to bill you the full amount of the fee. It's not like they're going to skip your house and grab your neighbor's garbage because she paid, they're going to bill every property. The only thing we will be able to do is bring some kind of legal action against the City when they refuse to pick up that couch, refrigerator, building material or abandoned car we no longer want. Hey, if we're paying for them to pick up the trash, they can't refuse to pick up all of our trash!

I'm sure that the billing for the garbage collection will be outsourced to some connected firm.

Politicians are terrified of raising property taxes. What the hell does it matter what you call it if you're raising the same amount of money? At least with the property tax I can get a minor benefit of writing it off my state and federal income taxes. Can't do that with garbage fees, utility taxes, sales taxes etc.

Write offs let us shift a teeny part of the burden to other taxpayers outside Chicago.

Open up casinos TOMORROW. Downtown, airports and at McCormick Place.

Had to double check the districts. Yup...working 015 and 011 this week and going to be in 011 and 012 next week. I'd guess some areas of 015 and 011 qualify under "blighted" and maybe a 'few' areas in 012. Our beats are structured differently than you guys and gals police districts. Next week for example, the beat boundaries are Western to Pulaski and Madison to Chicago. This week, Pulaski to Austin, Chicago to Madison. Was in 015 this morning to use the can. Nice people at the desk (and No Sarcasm at all here.). Have had nothing but Positive interactions with the on duty PO's in 01, 015 and 012. Was in 018 last week. Figure about 6 weeks until I'm scheduled to be back in 016 (41st Ward).

Stay safe.

We pay for garbage pickup and have to "rent" the totes-one for garbage and one for recyclables (and a third for yard waste, if desired).
It's about $45.00 every 3 months.
You cannot use your own cans-have to use the totes.

That doesn't bother me so much like the taxes for schools and education. We weren't blessed with kids but we sure pay for them!

Isn't there a ban on posts from Rahm's office here?

The city council is not stupid. They know for a fact that they have Joe Taxpayer by the balls. Property taxes, water bills, garbage fees, etc. are higher in the suburbs. There is no escape. Unless if you move out of state and for most of us, that is not an option.

I can see it now idiots dumping trash in neighbors cart! Send the police

Instead of all those street and San bosses driving around the city acting like they are emergency vehicles put them to work. Start by writing ticket on those abandoned houses the banks own!

You Chicagoans kill me. OMG!!! Pay a garbage collection fee? The world is truly ending!!! Well welcome the hell to the rest of the world. And why not privatize it? Could anything be run worse than a city government entity? Why is Rahm in the garbage business anyway? .... oh wait....nevermind..

How about charging a small fee for police service? That fee could pay for a lot. Tax the people who use it (or abuse it).

It is only a few residents who do not use the receptacles in the
areas" you are talking about. We kept rats away from our homes by keeping the garbage cans as far from the house as possible, keeping the lids on tight and recycling as much as possible, then, a family moved next door and moved the garbage cans close to the banisters so they could come out and throw garbage into the can without having to walk down the stairs. A lot of times they missed the can and the garbage went all over the yard or into the basement and piled up two to three feet high before someone would sweep it up. This brought big rats and another creature that looked like something someone brought from the south and then released it in North Lawndale. This same family and their friends would drink alcohol on the front porch and eat fast food and throw it all and baby's pampers into the garbage cans on the curb, filling it up and some dropped onto the street also bringing rats. Maybe paying for garbage pick up will make the landlords more careful about who they rent to and what their tenants are doing.

Going to start putting chains....3-1-1 instructed me to put my garbage into others' cans because they did not have time to bring enough carts to hold the extra garbage because of my moving. I could have just dumped it like everyone else however, I decided I did not want to do that and I still recycle as much as possible. So don't make comments when you do not know the whole story.

@9:53 am- I can't believe wtf I just read. I'm guessing your some Northside yuppie or hipster. Ya see its like this, me and the rest of the paupers that are upset about this for the most part are so because the people running this town are crooked pieces of shit as the ones running OUR town always have been. Right now it's worse than ever and as our weasel mayor cries poor when it comes to many many important things that people risk life and limb earning for this city and also things Chicago TAXPAYERS deserve. His tears dry up though when it comes to helping out many connected people and companies with more money than you and your chums can fathom for unnecessary projects, programs, and disguised bullshit. The true middle/upper middle class taxpaying chicagoin get the most fucked out of them and don't qualify for the resources to ease the dick size. How about you tell us which block your on and I'll just leave my trash in your alley. I'll let ya pay, thanks mack

Before I took a job with the city, I lived in Country Club Hills back in the 80's. We had our pick between 3 different
disposal companies. Is the city going to do the same. Let us pick who we go with. If they do there will soon be quite
a few pink slips be handed out in Strrets & San

I am retired and a Snow Bird and spend almost the entire winter down south.

Will I be charged for garbage collection then? I have my neighbors watch my house and throw trash in my cans to make the place looked lived in.

I always had good relations with my city Garbage Collectors. Whenever possible I'd meet them and give the crew chilled bottles of water. When we had a regular ward based crew I would give them restaurant gift cards at Christmas. Never had a problem if I had to throw anything extra out. Like after a major clean-up or home improvement project. Just be careful not to over due it. Hate to see what Rham would do with this. I believe he once said, "If people think something is a good deal they're not paying enough."

This has been the rumor among streets and san. guys since the mid 90's. Problem was Ritchie knew half of bridgeport worked for the dept. and most were put there by the 11th ward office. He couldn't do it his own turf. The outfit did all they could to sweeten the deal too. So daley instead gave them the hired truck program to shut em up. But promises were rumored to have gone out when the truck program was on the front page of the times. The outfit that believe it or not is still around is pushing for this garbage shit. Street sweepers are next! Caruso..I mean Elgin sweepers is first in line. Like ants, as soon as ya think their gone....Their kids are back

Yeah, right.
And then the mutts will own my building because I discriminated against them for refusing to rent to them, because they MIGHT NOT throw their garbage out properly.

A lot of posts agreeing to the new tax. The Mayor's office must be monitoring the heck out of this site. I especially like the posts about how happy they are with the ban on plastic garbage bags and how it will bring food prices down. Are you hoping for the scratch behind the ears or do you believe that nonsense? I have two food stores by me. One has convenient plastic bags, the other does not. Which one do you think I go to?

I like the idea about not recycling. Tax me again and the blue can will never see another thing in it. I don't know who is making a buck on this, but I think that is the protest. Tell Rahm no.

We will all pay the tax. Look at your phone bill you pay for the city to give out free phones. Drink water lately from a bottle? Look at the corner of your windshield? Some of you even pay to park in front of your house with a credit card.

Has anyone ever thought that people who use the public schools should pay? Even the gimmee everything free crowd should have to pay a small portion.

Those bike lanes seem to take up space what up! NO taxes on bikes on roads?

How about another tax on BONDs for the jail birds we lock up day after day?

best bet is to privatize garbage collection entirely. people can pay whomever they want to come collect it or just bring it to work and drop it off there and save even more. :)

We do pay for garbage collection! It's included with our water bill. How about charging for having mor than two garbage carts. There are single family homes I have seen that have up to six.

Oops sorry my wife told me it's not on our water bill. However we are tired of being nickeled and dimed to death. I would like to know where all the revenue goes for our outrageous city vehicle tax stickers. Are they trying to force more middle class families out?

Why is it the recycling truck can do the same route as a city garbage truck, but do it with a crew of one? vs the city crew of 2 to 3 workers? and then they cover more ground in the same shift?

8/20/2015 01:25:00 AM

Because if the can is not prominently out in the alley on collection day they don't pick it up. If the can is covered in snow in the winter, they don't pick it up; just put a nice orange sticker on it saying 'sorry' you broke the rules! We'll try again in 2 weeks.

Recycling......the stores are now requiring your won bags or reusable bags which should cut costs for stores which should result in cheaper products for the consumer. So recycle, please.

Go to Walgreens. They have much thicker bags. The ordinance only covers bags of a particular gauge. I LOVE IT!
